Anita is an engineering student who is fearless against the seniors and raging. She doesn’t care about what people think about her and lives a carefree life. But, she is a girl fighting against cancer. To everyone’s shock, she is sexually assaulted and murdered. The story takes a turn when a lawyer appears to make the criminals get their due punishment. Were they punished? What happened to the lawyer who faced several threats from the political side? The rest of the story deals with it.

Star Performance

Losliya seems to be a bit over-acting. Harbhajan Singh’s lip-synch doesn’t match the dialogues. Sathish gets a regular hero’s friend role. Arjun has gained a strong character, and he is good at executing.

As the film marks the debut of Harbhajan Singh as a Tamil hero, people expect something different; in the story and performances. But, they see a typical college story with a set of students playing, raging, roaming, and enjoying their college days. The added thing is the assault and murder of the girl, and it is related to a recent incident that happened in Tamilnadu that went on to silent mode. A cricket match is forcedly inserted for Harbhajan. Those scenes are not executed properly. Similarly, the hero should have been given some acting and lip-syncing workshop before the shooting started. Arjun’s role is good, but when he delivers dialogues about women’s safety, we can hear people murmuring about the complaint against him from the film industry.

If the story had been different and well-executed, the film might have given a good name for Bhajji in Kollywood. However, it is different to see Harbhajan Singh as a hero. Friendship – Not so close to the heart!

Friendship is a Tamil-language action-comedy movie directed by John Paul Raj and Sham Surya. Featuring Indian cricketer-turned-actor Harbhajan Singh in his debut leading role along with Arjun Sarja and Losliya Mariyanesan, the movie was released in theaters in September 2021. The story revolves around a group of friends who are passionate about cricket and have big dreams of playing for the Indian cricket team. Harbhajan Singh plays the role of Jeeva, a middle-class boy from a small village in Tamil Nadu who is a talented cricketer. He idolizes his hero, Sachin Tendulkar, and dreams of playing for India one day.

Jeeva and his childhood friend, Karthi (played by Arjun Sarja), move to Chennai to pursue their dreams of becoming professional cricketers. There, they meet Jenny (played by Losliya Mariyanesan), a Sri Lankan Tamil girl who is also passionate about cricket. The three of them become close friends and set out to achieve their goals.

However, things take a turn when Jeeva is falsely implicated in a drugs case and is sent to jail. Karthi and Jenny try their best to clear Jeeva's name and prove his innocence so that he can continue pursuing his dreams. They receive help from an unexpected source - a retired cricket coach, played by Sathish, who decides to mentor the trio and help them achieve their goals.

The movie is a perfect blend of cricket, action, and comedy. The cricket matches are shot beautifully, and the action scenes are well choreographed. The movie also has several humorous moments, which lighten the mood of the film.

Harbhajan Singh delivers an impressive performance in his debut role. He brings his own personal experiences to the character of Jeeva and portrays the emotions of the character convincingly. Arjun Sarja, as always, delivers a solid performance. Losliya Mariyanesan also impresses with her acting skills and brings a much-needed freshness to the screen.

ஹர்பஜன் சிங், சதீஷ் உள்ளிட்ட நண்பர்கள் கோவையில் உள்ள இஞ்சினியரிங் கல்லூரியில் மெக்கானிக்கல் இஞ்சினியரிங் முதலாமாண்டு படிக்கிறார்கள். பெண்களே சேராத அந்த குரூப்பில் லாஸ்லியா வந்து சேர்கிறார். அவரிடம் யாருமே பேசக் கூடாது என ஹர்பஜன் அன்ட் கோ சொல்கிறது. ஆனால், போகப் போக லாஸ்லியான குறும்பையும், நல்ல குணத்தையும் பார்த்து அனைவரும் அவருடன் நட்பாகப் பழக ஆரம்பிக்கிறார்கள். இந்நிலையில் லாஸ்லியா பற்றிய ஒரு அதிர்ச்சியான தகவல் அவர்களுக்குத் தெரிய வருகிறது. அதன்பின் என்ன நடக்கிறது என்பதுதான் படத்தின் மீதிக் கதை. மேலே சொன்னது போல அதன்பிறகு திரைக்கதை நகராமல் எங்கெங்கோ சுற்றி, எதையெதையோ சொல்லி ஒரு வழியாக முடிகிறது. எதையோ சொல்ல வந்து தடம் மாறிவிட்டார்கள். ஹர்பஜன் சிங் கோபக்கார கல்லூரி இளைஞராக நடித்திருக்கிறார். ஓரளவிற்கு நடிக்க முயற்சித்திருக்கிறார். எப்போதும் நண்பர்கள் படை சூழ அவர் இருப்பதால் படத்தின் கதாநாயகன் அவர் தானா என்ற சந்தேகம் வருகிறது. அவர் கூடவே சதீஷ், இன்னும் சிலர் இருப்பதால் ஒவ்வொருவருக்கும் முக்கியத்துவம் தர வேண்டி, வசனங்களையும் பிரித்துப் பிரித்து கொடுத்துள்ளார்கள். அதனால், ஹர்பஜன் தனி கதாநாயகனாகத் தெரியாமல் அவரது முக்கியத்துவம் குறைந்திருக்கிறது. ஹர்பஜனின் நட்பு வட்டாரத்தில் தெரிந்த முகங்களாக சதீஷ், வெட்டுக்கிளி பாலா ஆகிய இருவர் மட்டுமே இருக்கிறார்கள். சதீஷ் வழக்கம் போல காமெடி என நினைத்து பேசி சிரிக்க வைக்கிறார். பாலா திடீரென வருகிறார், போகிறார். மற்ற நண்பர்கள் ஒவ்வொரு காட்சியிலும் ஆளுக்கொரு காட்சியில் வசனம் பேசுகிறார்கள். மெக்கானிக் இஞ்சினியரிங் சேர வேண்டுமென்ற ஆசையில் தேடி வந்து சேர்கிறார் லாஸ்லியா. குறும்புக்காரப் பெண் கதாபாத்திரம் என்கிறார்கள். ஆனால், எப்போதும் சிரித்துக் கொண்டே மட்டும் இருக்கிறார். இவருக்கு மேக்கப் போட்டதை கண்ணாடியிலும், காமிராவிலும் ஒழுங்காகப் பார்த்தார்களா இல்லையா என்று தெரியவில்லை. குளோசப் காட்சிகளில் மேக்கப் நிலைமை பரிதாபமாக இருக்கிறது. சிறப்புத் தோற்றத்தில் நடிகர் அர்ஜுன். படத்தின் டைட்டில் காட்சியில் அதிரடி சண்டைக் காட்சியில் வருகிறார். அதன்பிறகு கிளைமாக்சில் நீதிமன்றக் காட்சிகளில் வந்து அதிரடியான கேள்விகளை எழுப்புகிறார். ஹர்பஜன் நடிக்கிறார் என்பதற்காக இடைவேளைக்குப் பிறகு தேவையில்லாத ஒரு கிரிக்கெட் மேட்ச்சைத் திணித்து நேரத்தைக் கடத்துகிறார்கள். அதையும் நிஜ விளையாட்டு மைதானத்தில் எடுக்காமல் கிரீன்மேட்டில் மோசமாக எடுத்திருக்கிறார்கள். நாட்டுக்காக பல சாதனைகளை படைத்த ஒரு கிரிக்கெட் வீரர் நடித்த படத்தில் இப்படியா கிரிக்கெட் காட்சிகளை படமாக்குவது ?. பெண்கள் இரவு நேரங்களில் வெளியில் வருவது சரியா என்ற கேள்விக்கு, பெண்கள் இந்த நேரங்களில் மட்டும்தான் வெளியில் போக வேண்டும், மற்ற நேரங்களில் அவர்களுக்குப் பாதுகாப்பு இல்லை என எந்த சட்டமாவது உள்ளதாக என்று எழுப்பும் கேள்விக்கு தியேட்டர்களில் கைதட்டல் கிடைக்கிறது. நடுஇரவிலும் பெண்கள் பயமின்றி செல்லும் போதுதான் இந்த நாட்டிற்கு முழு சுதந்திரம் என்று காந்தி கண்ட கனவு இத்தனை ஆண்டுகளுக்குப் பிறகும் நிறைவேறவில்லையே என்று யோசிக்க வைக்கிறது. அதற்காக நாம் என்ன செய்துள்ளோம் என்ற முக்கிய கேள்வியை எழுப்புகிறது இந்தப் படம். கிளைமாக்சில் வைத்துள்ள அழுத்தத்தை படத்தின் ஆரம்பத்தில் இருந்து வைத்திருந்தால் இந்த பிரண்ட்ஷிப்பில் நாமும் சேர்ந்திருக்கலாம். பிரண்ட்ஷிப் - நெருக்கமில்லை...

Moondru Mudichu (1976): The movie revolves around three people, a college-going girl (Sridevi) and two men who fall in love with her (Kamal Hassan and Rajinikanth). A remake of the Telugu film O Seeta Katha, it's co-written and directed by K Balachander.

Ilamai Oonjal Aadukirathu (1978): Best friends fall in love with the same woman. The film directed by CV Sridhar is headlined by Kamal Haasan, Sri Priya, Rajinikanth and Jayachitra. It ran for 175 days in theatres and won the Tamil Nadu State Film Award.

Vattathukkul Chadhuram (1978): This is yet another excellent Tamil film to watch. The plot revolves around Anu, who falls in love with Karthik, the brother of her best friend Malathy. The film, directed by SP Muthuraman, depicts how two friends love and sacrifice things in their lives for each other.

Nizhalgal (1980): The travails of three unemployed young men trying to make ends meet and chasing their aspirations. The film is co-written and directed by Bharathiraja.

Sattam (1983): Directed by K Vijayan, the film highlights the bond between inspector Raja (Kamal Haasan) and lawyer Ravi (Sarath Babu). The film, also featuring Madhavi, Manorama, Silk Smitha, and YG Mahendra, is a remake of Dostana (1980).

Thalapathi (1991): The plot is based on the friendship of Karna and Duryodhana from the Mahabharata. Mani Ratnam was able to bring a similar bond to the big screen with this film, which starred Rajinikanth and Mammootty. Surya (Rajinikanth), an orphan raised in a slum, befriends and works for a good crime boss named Devaraj (Mammootty). When a new honest district collector arrives, their existence is threatened, and they must stand up for each other as friends.

Annamalai (1992): A class-divided friendship between Rajinikanth and Sarath Babu goes through highs and lows over several decades.

Thiruda Thiruda (1993): An Inspector is assigned to track down a large sum of stolen money. His investigations lead him to a couple of small-time crooks, a village belle, a murderer, an absconding suspect, and an international drug dealer.

Sathi Leelavathi (1995): Arun (Ramesh Arvind), bored of his wife's (Leelavathi) looks and weighty appearance, meets Priya and develops an affair with her. But his wife has other plans. The friendship between Kamal Haasan and Ramesh Arvind is the primary highlight of this Balu Mahendra directorial.

Kalloori Vaasal (1996): Sathya and Vasanth are two best pals since their childhood. An employee of Sathya's mother wants his daughter to get married to Sathya. He has selfish motives behind this desire.

Kadhal Desam (1996): Two boys from rival colleges, one rich and the other poor, become good friends after an incident. A new girl in college makes both their hearts melt but neither realises that they love the same girl.

Maanbumigu Maanavan (1996): Shiva, a happy-go-lucky guy, helps two of his best friends get married, much to the dismay of their parents. When the girl gets raped by Madan, Shiva and his friends seek to bring him to justice.

Kalki (1996): Chellama (Geetha) is a wounded woman, a singer who was hurt by her ex-husband and longs for a child. Her sort of companion is cook Kokila (Fathima Babu), who smiles and spouts philosophy although her husband is in prison. The two share a quiet companionship of equals in Kalki, directed by K Balachander, and their economic disparity never gets in the way of their shared bond.

Iruvar (1997): A struggling actor and a writer-politician become friends as young men and rise to great heights in cinema and politics respectively. But when both become contenders for the top political post in the state, a rift develops between them.

Natpukkaga (1998): Sarath Kumar portrayed both the father (Chinnaiya) and the son (Muthaiya). The plot revolves around the friendship of faithful servant Sarathkumar (Chinaiya) and wealthy man Vijayakumar. Chinnaiya went to jail to save Vijayakumar's daughter's life, but Vijayakumar's daughter mistook Chinnaiya for her mother's murder and despises both Chinnaiya and Muthaiya.

Snegithiye (2000): This is yet another film about female friendship. The plot revolves around Vasu and Radhika, who try to avoid Radhika's arranged marriage by pretending to love Ramesh, a fictional man. Priyadarshan directed the film.

Friends (2001): Three friends, who value friendship over everything else, begin to fall apart when one of them learns about a shocking incident that happened in their past.

Pandavar Bhoomi (2001): Dhanasekar hires an engineer to rebuild his ancestral house. When he falls in love with Dhanasekar's niece, Dhanasekar narrates his family's past, which changes his mind to sacrifice his love. The film is known for its songs, in particular... Thozha Thozha, was a hit.

Poovellam Un Vaasam (2001): Two families who have known each other for over 40 years stay in identical bungalows next to each other. Their children, Chinna and Chella (Ajith and Jyotika), who were childhood friends, end up falling in love with each other. Soon after, a misunderstanding causes a rift between them and their families.

Five Star (2002): Prabhu (Prasanna), Ilango (Krishna), Sundar (Karthik), Priya, and Indra are college best friends who swear they will never lose touch later in life. They both get jobs in the same company, but Ilango is kidnapped to his village by his dictatorial father (Vijayan) and forced to marry Eeswari (Kanika). He then flees, leaving his friends to believe he is in Bombay with his new wife. After a few years, the remaining four are still friends, work in the same company, and even live in the same house. Prabhu meets Eeswari on the train and falls in love with her even though she is Ilango's wife. When the truth is revealed, she becomes close to the gang. What happens eventually forms the climax!

April Maadhathil (2002): A story about the friendship between eight girls and boys. Kathir is a bright young man who grew up in a poor family and aspires to be a good student. He meets a girl named Shwetha in college and they become friends over time. For their vacation, a group of friends decides to visit each other's homes. Kathir and Shwetha love each other but are unable to express their feelings for one another. How did they end up together?

Panchatanthiram (2002): Ram (Kamal Hassan), a pilot by profession, falls in love with and marries Mythili (Simran). Ram's friends wanted to surprise him for his birthday. They take him to a hotel, where Ram meets Maggy (Ramya Krishna), a high-class call girl. However, it is discovered that Maggy is no longer alive. The terrified five friends throw her body into the river. The rest of the story is about Mythili returning to Ram after discovering the truth.

Mounam Pesiyadhe (2002): A Misogynist's attitude towards women and love starts to change after he develops feelings for a woman.

Boys (2003) : Munna is in love with Harini, and they marry against their parent's wishes. So, they kick them out of their home. Friends support this young couple. They all work together to make ends meet. They discover their hidden talents and strengths, eventually. They form the band 'Boys', sign a contract with Sony Music and win MTV awards.

Priyamaana Thozhi (2003): The film is about the strong friendship between Madhavan and Sridevi and how society perceives it. Nobody around them sees their relationship as platonic. Their friendship beautifully depicts their unconditional and self-sacrificing love for one another. This film is without a doubt the greatest stereotype buster of all time.

Pithamagan (2003): Chithan (Vikram), a young orphan, grows up in a cemetery and has no human feelings; however, when he leaves the place and meets people, he experiences emotions for the first time. Sakthi (Suriya) encounters Chithan in jail, takes pity on him, and befriends him. Sakthi's affection softens Chithan's hard heart. Sakthi later gets into trouble with an influential narcotics dealer, and the story gradually builds to a gory and fitting conclusion.

Enaku 20 Unaku 18 (2003): This is Shriya Saran's first Tamil film, in which she plays a football coach and Tarun's friend. The bond they share demonstrates that a man and a woman can be friends. She is the one who brings out the best in him and sometimes acts as emotional support.

Anbe Sivam (2003) : Two men, one young and arrogant, the other damaged; physically but not spiritually, by life, are thrown together by circumstances, and find that they are in some ways bound together by fate.

Autograph (2004): The film, starring Cheran and Sneha, is about a male-female friendship. Cheran meets his trusted friend Sneha on his journey, who instils confidence in him and explains the life lesson that one must learn to progress, as well as assists him in improving his work profile. The ups and downs of friends sharing their lives and problems are also depicted well.

Azhagiya Theeye (2004): Circumstances force a struggling filmmaker and a rich girl to marry and live in a flat.

Vasoolraja MBBS (2004): Rajaraman, a goon, has lied to his parents that he is a doctor. Once, on their visit, the truth comes out and they are heartbroken. That's when he decides to become a real doctor by hook or by crook.

Ullam Ketkume (2005): This flashback is set many years after campus life and weaves in the emotions of one-sided love, friendship, and heartbreak. The realistic storytelling depicts a happy college life and a happier afterlife.

Vallavan (2006): Simbu and Sandhya are classmates, and she is his critic and cheerleader. The film depicts typical male-female friends who frequently assist one another in winning the heart of their love interest. Sandhya is a wonderful friend who is always there for Simbu through his ups and downs.

Kalloori (2007): A group of nine childhood friends join an arts college together in a small town. Soon, Shobana becomes a part of their group, joining in the fun and games. Muthu eventually falls in love with her.

Rameswaram (2007): Vasanthi, part of a well-off family, meets Jeevan, a Sri Lankan refugee yearning to return home. Their friendship soon transforms into love.

Chennai 28 (2007): Friendship, love, and rivalry spice up the game of street cricket in the suburb of Chennai whose zip code gives this movie its name.

Anjathe (2008): If Anjathe only reminds you of the thrilling plot, we say you've missed out on a lot of what the film was actually about. It was about human emotions and relationships that go through various upheavals, especially between two friends whose fates separate them. You have to give it to Mysskin to imagine two friends pitted against each other in a ruthless narration of crime, cheating, and violence. If not for celebration, the friendship depicted in the film could teach us a lot about why it's important to maintain close relationships with our friends.

Kuselan (2008): Story related to old friends after one is a popular actor and the other is a barber and managing family. It is directed by P Vasu and is produced by K Balachander's Kavithalaya Films and Seven Arts together. Music for this Rajinikanth film has been scored by GV Prakash.

Saroja (2008): Four friends, Jaga, Ganesh, Ajay and Vishwas are motoring to a cricket game. An accident leads them to divert to a side road, where they encounter a criminal gang that has kidnapped a young girl and shot a policeman in front of them.

Subramaniapuram (2008): Azhagar and his friend Paraman kill the person who humiliated Kanugu's brother and surrender themselves to the police. However, they soon learn that Kanugu has betrayed them.

Pattalam (2009): It is a solid school-based drama that explores the complexities of student life, friendship, love, and jealousy. Also, the film depicts the notoriousness of teenagers and their immaturity. The film, set during the time of Boys and Chennai28, delivers exactly what you expect.

Ninaithale Inikkum (2009): The word means "sweet memories" in Tamil. It is about a college reunion and narrates the characters' college lives through a series of flashbacks. On the surface, it is an exploration of friendship and love during college days, and the song Nanbanai Partha takes you on a nostalgic trip.

Naadodigal (2009): Three friends decide to do whatever it takes to unite one of their old friends with the girl he is in love with, which gradually takes a turn for the worst, but strengthens their bond with each other nonetheless.

Goa (2010): Samikannu (Premgi Amaran), Vinayakam (Jai), and Ramarajan (Vaibhav) escape their overly strict families and travel to Goa with the sole purpose of falling in love with a white woman. However, before fleeing, they take the deity's ornaments from their village temple in the hope that they will be useful in the event of a crisis. It is a romantic comedy and has got a lot of emotional touches.

Boss Engira Bhaskaran (2010): Bhaskaran, a college dropout, starts a coaching class for students with his friend Nallathambi to win the love of a young professor, Chandrika.

Inidhu Inidhu (2010): A group of freshers quickly become friends and fall in love. How the four couples grow closer over years, punctuated by jealousy, separation, and reconciliation before parting ways upon graduation, forms the storyline. It's a celebration of youth and promises to take us back to our college days.

Goripalayam (2010): Set in the suburbs of Madurai, the film revolves around four youngsters — unkempt, unfocused and wayward. Alienated from their families (the director makes a futile attempt to evoke sympathy with a flashback of their deprived childhood), the drifters find themselves drawn into a vicious circle of violence and bloodshed.

Maathiyosi (2010) : Four best friends, Pandi, Mangaa, Kona and Maari, live for each other and are vagabonds. They decide to go to Chennai after they are forced to leave their village for killing their headman's son.

Oh My Friend Sridhar (2011): There have been many films that celebrate friendship, and Sridhar is one of them that does so in a very endearing way. The film depicts the beautiful relationship that exists between childhood friends Siddharth and Shruti Haasan, and how it is difficult for them to stay on the same level, as well as their pangs of having to choose one over the other.

Neethaane En Ponvasantham (2012): The film, directed by Gautham Vasudev Menon, tells the story of Varun and Nithya, who are in love but are separated due to their different career choices. Nithya and Jenny, best friends, have a strong bond in the film.

Naduvula Konjam Pakkatha Kaanom (2012) : Prem Kumar (Vijay Sethupathi) loses his memory after collapsing while playing cricket with his friends. The problem is that Prem forgets his last year of memories and thus forgets his wedding, which is in two days. The rest of the story is about how his friends get him married without anyone knowing about his temporary memory loss.

Sundarapandian (2012): Sundarapandian (Sasikumar), who has finished college and hangs out in his village with friend Murugesan (Soori), decides to help Arivazhagan (Inigo Prabhakaran) woo Archana (Lakshmi Menon). However, she rejects Arivazhagan as well as another suitor, Bhuvaneshwaran (Appukutty). When she says she has been in love with Sundarapandian for a long time, complications arise.

Nanban (2012): 10 years after leaving college, two best friends and their rival go on a search for their third friend, while finding out some truths along the way. This one is a remake of the Hindi film, 3 Idiots.

Kanna Laddu Thinna Aasaiya (2013): Three close friends attempt to win the heart of a beautiful girl, a neighbour. The story is whether one of the three wins her or someone else does.

Arrambam (2013): A mysterious man along with a young computer hacker tries to unveil a major government conspiracy which resulted in several bloody deaths.

Endrendrum Punnagai (2013): Three best friends, Gautham, Baby and Sri, decide to stay single all their lives. But Baby and Sri get married and Gautham is left alone until Priya comes into his life.

Anjaan (2014): Krishna comes to Mumbai in search of his brother Raju Bhai, an underworld don. Through Raju Bhai's gangster friends, his past life is revealed. What happened to Raju Bhai? Will Krishna find him?

Madras (2014): A depiction of the lives of the people who live in North Madras. A wall causes discord between two factions of a political party. Kaali (Karthi) and his political rival Anbu (Kaliyarasan) become embroiled in this brutal political rivalry.

Urumeen (2015): Several unexpected events link two men to each other, with one of them finding out about their two births' old relationship through a magical book. Urumeen is a fascinating watch; thanks to an intriguing screenplay, a refreshing narrative style, and some excellent performances. There are some flaws, but they aren't serious enough to detract from the film's entertainment value.

Vasuvum Saravananum Onna Padichavanga (2015): Vasu (Santhanam) and Saravanan(Arya) are close buddies who run a mobile shop. But when two girls Seema (Banu) and Aishwarya (Tamannaah) enter their life, life changes. How do Vasu and Saravanan struggle to keep their friendship going?

Thakka Thakka (2015): The film is an emotional action thriller which is based on a friendship between two boys who work in a wine shop. Directed by Sanjeev, this one stars Vikranth, Abhinaya, Aravinnd Singh, Rahul Venkat and others in key roles. It was dubbed into Hindi as Phir Se Mafiaraaj.

Bangalore Naatkal (2016): Arya, Bobby Simha, and Sri Divya have had a special bond since childhood and have a dream of enjoying life in Bangalore, which they eventually achieve. The trio goes through a difficult time in their personal lives, but they manage to be each other's support system.

Pazhaya Vannarapettai (2016): A political crime thriller which deals with political murders and duplicate liquors and has a strong friendship base throughout the movie.

Uriyadi (2016): Four friends studying in an engineering college unintentionally end up becoming a part of caste politics led by corrupt politicians.

Thozha (2016): Impressed by his carefree attitude, quadriplegic multi-billionaire Vikram hires a convict out on parole as his caretaker. What follows is a string of life lessons they learn from each other.

Brindavanam (2017): A hearing and speech impaired barber in Ooty meets his idol, actor Vivekh. A poignant friendship develops between the two.

Magalir Mattum (2017): Prabhavati (Jyothika), an independent documentary filmmaker moves in with her future mother-in-law Goms (Urvashi). Prabha discovers that Goms misses her former classmates Subbulakshmi (Saranya) and Rani (Bhanupriya), with whom she has lost touch over the years. Prabha brings them together and takes them on a road trip to rekindle old memories and provide a liberating experience using Facebook.

Rangoon (2017): A story about three friends dealing with illegal gold trafficking in India when they think everything is going smoothly their life takes a u-turn when a business deal goes wrong in Rangoon.

Pariyerum Perumal (2018): A law student from a lower caste begins a friendship with his classmate, a girl who belongs to a higher caste, and the men in her family start giving him trouble over this.

Bakrid (2019): A man develops a friendship with a camel, and has to embark on a journey with the animal. The film, directed by Sigai-fame Jagadeesan Subu, stars Vikranth and Vasundhara of Peranmai fame in lead roles.

Natpe Thunai (2019): An international hockey player who has chosen to leave the sport picks it up again to save the ground of a local team.

Oh, My Kadavule (2020): Arjun (Ashok Selvan), Mani (Sha Ra) and Anu Paulraj (Ritika Singh) are childhood friends. Arjun marries Anu despite having no romantic feelings for her, only to end up in a divorce proceeding. What if he was given another chance to work things out?

Kalathil Santhipom (2021): The story of two friends, Anand and Ashok, the story revolving around their love, sports, and family bondings. The film, directed by Rajasekar, stars Jiiva, Arulnithi, and Manjima Mohan.

Friendship (2021): Set in college, Friendship is an emotional saga where two friends go out of their way to help a girl get justice, who is sexually abused and killed by goons. Will they succeed? After all, justice delayed is justice denied.

Anbulla Ghilli (2022): The film traces the life of Ramu and Ghilli, the dog, who are close friends. Ramu finds himself caught in a love triangle. Ghilli helps Ramu find true love. Their life is stirred up by Sundar, a ruthless poacher disguised as a forest ranger.

Mudhal Nee Mudivum Nee (2022): In the 1990s, a group of high school students in a strict Catholic school navigate their way through everyday teen pressures.

My Dear Bootham (2022): The film shows Prabhudheva as a genie. Directed by N Ragavan, the story of My Dear Bootham delves into the relationship between a genie and a kid. An out-and-out fantasy entertainer, the film has Ramya Nambeesan in a prominent role, with Aswanth, Param Guhanesh, Saathvik, Sakthi and Kaesitha playing substantial roles.

‘The Greatest of All Time’ movie review: Vijay, Venkat Prabhu’s ‘GOAT’ chooses theatrical fan service over a compelling story

Venkat prabhu’s ‘goat’ might let you down if you’re expecting a globe-trotting espionage thriller or a genre-specific entertainer, but it is definitely a celebration of everything fans have ever loved about vijay.

Director Venkat Prabhu sets the tone of his Vijay-starrer GOAT (The Greatest of All Time) right from the very first scene. It’s a recovery mission for a covert team of agents led by Gandhi (Vijay) against the villain Rajiv Menon (Mohan). Gandhi, as someone the film hints about in its title, brings down the house with an action sequence laced with his unique style, but before taking the final shot at Rajiv, he is stopped by his friend, owing to the circumstances. This sequence, in a way, is a synopsis of the overall plot, and such slivers of excellence from Venkat and his team stand apart in this template film enhanced with impeccable fan service.

In GOAT , Gandhi and his Special Anti-Terrorism Squad consisting of Sunil ( Prashanth ), Ajay (Ajmal), Kalyan (Prabhu Deva), and their chief Nazeer (Jayaram) are seasoned agents/friends. Without their rationales milked in the name of patriotism, we see them as regular office-goers with the usual workroom banter and why Gandhi’s wife Anu (Sneha) isn’t impressed when work spills into their personal space. Unless GOAT is your very first action thriller, you know for sure that all can certainly not be good, and this is just the calm before the storm. So when tragedy finally strikes, and the film moves from 2008 to the present, the pedal hits the metal, and GOAT turns into a Chupacabra.

Inarguably, the best aspect of GOAT is its strong casting. While some might feel like glorified cameos, the dream team feels like the closest we have ever gotten to an Expendables . Not only does the familiarity help us invest in the camaraderie and friendship the team shares, but the veterans bring their A-game to the party.

Despite the ensemble cast, it’s Vijay who shoulders the film in dual roles as Gandhi and his son Jeevan. And Venkat, knowing his assignment well, gives ample space for both characters to have their moments. They both care for their ménage and have their fair share of losses and a mission to complete. Then comes the dichotomy, and that’s where both the filmmaker and his hero shine. As Gandhi, Vijay aces the role of a man with a lot of responsibilities that turn into a burden and end up as grief — the actor Vijay takes centre-stage in a scene where his character faces a major loss. But it’s arguably Jeevan who steals the show (and probably hence the name), and it’s a blast to see Vijay as a young adult, complete with antics we have long loved. Without entering the spoiler zone, it’s safe to say that Vijay has pulled off a role he rarely succeeded in with his past attempts.

GOAT/ The Greatest Of All Time (Tamil)

It’s brilliant when a filmmaker takes feedback and reworks their product to deliver a better end-product. That’s how we got the Zack Snyder cut of Justice League and a more recognisable titular star in Sonic the Hedgehog . Similarly, after the de-ageing VFX criticism that GOAT’s promotional content got , it’s apparent that the makers returned to the drawing board to give us a far better and more credible rendition of a younger Vijay. Given that it plays a major component in the grand scheme of things, the makers took a precarious call that has worked wonders.

But similar to how the film uses technology to mask a 50-year-old and show a young adult, it also tries to conceal its shallow, simple, and painfully predictable plot with its star cast. If Vijay’s Leo reminded you of multiple films, GOAT will do the same; the Vijayakanth-led Rajadurai, helmed by Vijay’s father S. A. Chandrasekhar (in which the younger character is named Vijay, I kid you not), is a film that instantly comes to mind. GOAT , at its core, is a basic revenge story, and when made to look past the glitz — which you ought to at one point or the other — you are bound to see the paint chipping away from its grand facade. The action sequences are not exciting, the songs and background scores are disappointing, and probably the biggest pain in the neck is the antagonist played by Mohan. The character is bitterly underwritten, and the veteran cannot do much to salvage it. Not to mention how all the prominent female characters are always damsels in distress.

What works for GOAT majorly is how it keeps its stakes to a bare minimum and relies upon playing to the gallery. And boy, when the film gets into fan service mode, there’s no stopping it. Right from hat-tips to Vijay’s previous hit films, dance moves, and even mannerisms and references to his peers and political innuendoes, GOAT is undoubtedly a pop-culture treasure trove complete with its share of exciting cameos and a wonderful homage to a late legend .

GOAT might let you down if you’re expecting a globe-trotting espionage thriller, or just a genre-specific entertainer along the lines of Venkat’s Maanaadu . But if you want to catch the celebration of one of our most popular stars doing everything we love in his penultimate outing — including transforming from a GOAT to a Beast — then The Greatest of All Time is worth the entry fee; even with all its drawbacks, isn’t a lion always a lion?

E.T.'s presence brings out Elliott's nurturing and caring side, while Elliott's care helps E.T. feel saved. The emotional farewell between the two shows the impact of their friendship on them, even if it was a short-term friendship.

4 'life of pi' (2012), directed by ang lee.

Life of Pi follows Pi Patel ( Suraj Sharma ), an Indian boy who grew up in a zoo owned by his family in Pondicherry, India. Since a very young age, Pi seeks a deeper understanding of God and explores three different religions; Hinduism, Christianity, and Islam. When Pi is a teenager, his family decides to migrate to Canada, taking all their zoo animals with them on a cargo ship. The ship is caught up in a severe storm and eventually sinks into the Mariana Trench. Pi is the only human survivor, and he is surprised to find a tiger, named Richard Parker, alongside him on his lifeboat.

At first, Pi and Richard Parker are natural enemies. Richard Parker is a predator stranded in the middle of the ocean. Pi acknowledges this, and at first, he is terrified of the tiger. However, Pi quickly realizes that his survival relies on Richard Parker's survival. Pi starts training Richard Parker to see him as a provider of food rather than prey, as he starts fishing to feed him. Richard Parker's existence pushes Pi to stay mentally and physically strong for 227 days until they reach land. The depth and impact of their bond on Pi is seen in their farewell as Pi becomes saddened that the tiger went straight to the jungle without even looking at him.

3 'The Shawshank Redemption' (1994)

Directed by frank darabont.

The Shawshank Redemption is Stephen King 's favorite adaptation of his work . The movie starts with Andy Dufresne ( Tim Robbins ) arriving at Shawshank State Prison to serve two consecutive life sentences for murdering his wife and her love, a crime Andy denies. At first, he struggles to adjust to the harsh prison environment. Andy befriends Red ( Morgan Freeman ), a contraband smuggler who is serving a life sentence. Andy uses his banking and financial skills to help the guards and the warden in return for better treatment. Eventually, Andy's efforts led to the establishment of a prison library and educational classes. Throughout all of this, Andy still holds hope to prove his innocence.

The friendship between Andy and Red is a central theme of The Shawshank Redemption . Andy is an educated banker who is wrongfully convicted, while Red is a long-term inmate who admits his crime. However, the difference between the two men is not a barrier to their friendship. Andy's presence gives Red hope and transforms him to want a life outside Shawshank, while Red helps Andy realize the freedom he seeks, even if unknowingly.

2 'up' (2009), directed by pete docter.

Up is undeniably one of Pixar's best movies . Up starts with showing Carl’s (voiced by Ed Asner ) life from childhood to old age, particularly focusing on his relationship with Ellie. Carl and Ellie dreamed of going to Paradise Falls in South America, but they didn't make it due to spending their money on other necessities. Carl, now in his 70s and lost Ellie, still lives in the house they shared. When he is threatened with eviction due to surrounding urban developments, he decides to set off to Paradise Falls by attaching thousands of helium-filled balloons to his house. Russell (voiced by Jordan Nagai ), a young scout looking to gain a medal for helping the elderly, is accidentally stowed away in Carl’s flying house.

Carl and Russell are complete opposites; Carl is grumpy, gruff, and grieving the loss of his wife, while Russell is an optimistic, clumsy child. At first, Carl views Russell as an obstacle to his trip. However, he quickly warms up to him as they face many challenges together. Russell's innocence and determination teach Carl to live in the moment and to care for others. Eventually, Carl takes the role of a surrogate grandfather in Russell's life and the two develop an unbreakable bond.

1 'The Holdovers' (2023)

Directed by alexander payne.

The Holdovers was one of the biggest movies in 2023, and it introduced Dominic Sessa to the world . The Holdovers finds an unlikely trio, strict classics teacher Paul ( Paul Giamatti ), rebellious student Angus (Sessa), and the grieving cafeteria manager Mary ( Da'Vine Joy Randolph ), spending Christmas break together in a boarding school. As the trio spends more time together, they warm to each other with Paul turning into a mentor for Angus and Mary being a comforting and warm presence for Angus and Paul.

The connection between the trio develops because of their shared feeling of being "left behind". Angus feels left behind by his mother, who chose to go on honeymoon with her new husband instead of the planned family trip to Saint Kitts. Mary feels left behind as she grieves the death of her son after he was drafted in the Vietnam War. Paul feels left behind by the career he never had and being forced to stay at school over the break. Mary's caring nature is the glue that brings and holds the trio together. Paul and Angus' relationship starts rocky, but it develops into one of mutual respect and care as they begin to understand each other better.

Filmmakers Scott McGehee and David Siegel ('Montana Story') adapt Sigrid Nunez's beloved novel about a writer mourning her late pal while dealing with the enormous dog he left behind.

McGehee and Siegel build The Friend around Iris’ voiceover, including her memories and remarks to Walter, while he appears sparingly in flashbacks. Watts’ terrifically natural performance finds just the right tone: sad but not somber, questioning why Walter committed suicide and why he left her the dog. The thin plot follows her progress as she first resists taking Apollo, if only because her building doesn’t allow dogs. Walter’s widow, Barbara (Noma Dumezweni) — also known by Iris and her friends as Wife Number Three — says it was because she lives alone and loves animals. But no one thinks that a real explanation.

Murray’s casting is crucial in making The Friend work so well. His familiar, rumpled presence is so endearing that we like Walter instantly and understand Iris’ grief — much more than we might have if we’d only heard about him. We don’t actually know much about Walter, but then, the movie isn’t about him.

Some of what we do know comes through the dialogue. Carla Gugino , as Iris’ old friend and Walter’s former student — also Wife Number One — carries off a lot of the backstory easily. Constance Wu adds the most humor as Wife Number Two, who is stylish, annoying and too eager to write a memoir about her ex-husband. Felix Solis, so menacing as a crime lord in Netflix’s Ozark , is much warmer here as the super in Iris’ building who keeps warning her that management will evict her because of the dog. Tom McCarthy plays a therapist in a scene that allows Iris to fully express her grief and maybe find a solution to the dog problem.

One question answered at the end of of this model of adaptation is whether Iris will keep Apollo. By then it is clear, maybe even clearer than in the novel, that Walter left her exactly what she needed in order to go on without him.

It all opens with a dinner party where we meet Walter and his group of wives, lovers and longtime friend Iris as they converse in one of those very New York brownstones, a group of intelligentsia at a seemingly normal gathering. But shockingly it is followed closely by the same group and others at the funeral for Walter, who we learn committed suicide leaving behind his group of loved ones and admirers to wonder why he left them this way, and one loyal grieving dog wondering the same thing.

First wife Elaine ( Carla Gugino ), second wife Tuesday ( Constance Wu ), daughter Val (Sarah Pidgeon) who most didn’t know he even had, neighbor Marjorie ( Ann Dowd ) and publisher Jerry (Josh Pais) weave in and out of Iris’ situation with Apollo and her impending eviction if she doesn’t get rid of him. We learn much about their lives and the effect this man had on them, and especially the unique friendship Iris had with Walter. There is also a slow bonding with this depressed canine that, despite her best efforts to move on from this moment, makes it nearly impossible to do so humanely. But no, this is defiantly not a dog movie, but one where this animal, not up to any cutesy tricks, feels every bit a character like any of the humans here. It is also very much about grief and all the questions posed when a friend takes their life, senselessly it seems. How do you deal with what is left behind?

And yes, what happens to the dog?

McGehee and Siegel ( The Deep End, What Maisie Knew ) have crafted a wonderfully human, quintessential New York movie that makes you realize Hollywood so rarely does this kind of thing anymore — so when you see it, you know it, and you treasure the fact these are recognizable human beings we can relate to. That goes especially for Iris, a flustered woman but a good person trying to make the best of this situation, for both her and Apollo. Watts is consistently fine in just about everything but here has one of the best roles of her career, never going over the top but subtly perfect in every way as she also has to deal with her own loss. She also narrates the story and at one point muses about other dog movies like Old Yeller where the four-legged star dies, and she asks why that has to be the case. She probably has the best screen leading male she has ever worked with in Apollo, a remarkable and heartfelt performance that ranks with the great screen dog portrayals of all time. Bing, a non-pro who turned up in a casting search, plays him, and his own morose heartbreak will also break yours . Big shout-out to trainer/owner Bev Kingensmith and trainer Bill Berloni. Give this dog an Oscar.

The supporting cast is excellent, and of course Murray is right on the money making his few scenes sparkle. New York City has also never looked better, so shout out as well to cinematographer Giles Nuttgens.

The film is having its world premiere at the Telluride Film Festival and will also be playing Toronto and New York fests as well. It is looking for distribution and hopefully finds one that will give it all the treats it deserves. The Friend is a gem.
