Yankees’ Cole has third bullpen session. Domínguez is ready to start a minor league rehab assignment

ST. PETERSBURG Fla. (AP) — New York Yankees ace Gerrit Cole threw 29 pitches including breaking balls on Saturday in his third bullpen session since injuring his elbow in spring training.

Cole said he threw 13 curveballs and his fastball reached 89 mph in the workout before the Yankees played at Tampa Bay.

“Fastball profiles were good,” Cole said. “Location was good. Velocity was where we wanted. A lot of strikes.”

The right-hander is not sure how many more mound sessions he will have before facing hitters, but he said the plan is to simulate two innings in the next couple of outings.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone said outfielder Jasson Domínguez will be the designated hitter for the first of two weeks starting Tuesday or Wednesday for Single-A Tampa. The 21-year-old had four homers and seven RBIs in seven games last September before hurting his right elbow, which required Tommy John surgery.

Infielder DJ LeMahieu, out with a right foot injury, took live batting practice off injured right-hander JT Brubaker at the Yankees’ complex in Tampa.

Boone said LeMahieu will face pitching again on Tuesday and is nearing a rehab assignment.

Brubaker, acquired from Pittsburgh on March 30, sat out last season following Tommy John surgery. He was the Pirates’ opening day starter in 2022.

Reliever Tommy Kahnle, on the injured list with a hurt right shoulder, struck out one during a perfect inning in his second outing with Single-A Tampa. The righty is set to join Double-A Somerset on Tuesday.

Cole will remain in Tampa after the Yankees conclude their three-game series with the Rays on Sunday. His next mound session could be Tuesday.

The reigning AL Cy Young Award winner has been on the 60-day IL with right elbow inflammation. He is not expected to make his season debut until at least June.

The 33-year-old right-hander was shut down in mid-March due to nerve inflammation and edema in his pitching elbow. He had trouble bouncing back between starts.

“We’re making good process (there),” Cole said Saturday.

Cole is entering the fifth season of a $324 million, nine-year contract that pays $36 million annually. He has the right to opt out after the season and become a free agent, but if he opts out the Yankees can void the optout by adding a guaranteed $36 million salary for 2029.

Last season, Cole became the first Yankees player to win the Cy Young since Roger Clemens in 2001. He was 15-4 with an AL-best 2.63 ERA and finished with 222 strikeouts.

Could Byron Buxton return to the lineup Tuesday?

Twins athletic trainer Frank Paparesta told the Star Tribune that the Twins are "cautiously optimistic" Buxton can return to the lineup Tuesday night vs. the Yankees.

Tuesday is the first day Buxton is eligible to return to the lineup. He reportedly ran the bases Saturday at Target Field and he's expected to do the same Tuesday before the game.

The 30-year-old outfielder has been on the injured list since May 3, with what the team called "knee soreness," after pulling up lame while attempting to steal a base vs. the White Sox.

He was hitting .250 on the season with one home run and 11 RBI. A return to the lineup would help the Twins' depth in the outfield as they've been the hottest team in baseball over the last 20 games.

Byron buxton could rejoin twins by the weekend; justin topa out for six weeks.

Byron Buxton , who ran the bases twice during the Twins ' road trip, took batting practice and chased fly balls before Tuesday's game at Target Field.

His next game, however, will be in St. Paul. Buxton is scheduled to play two games on a rehab assignment with the Class AAA Saints on Wednesday and Thursday, ruling him out from playing in the Twins' three-game series against the New York Yankees.

"We're just going to give him a few more days to settle into some high-speed activity and then I think we can activate him," manager Rocco Baldelli said.

Buxton, sidelined because of right knee inflammation, was eligible to return from the 10-day injured list Sunday. He's now lined up to join the Twins in Cleveland this weekend.

"With Byron's knee, we have to be a little bit cognizant of the fact that he hasn't really had a short IL stint with that," Twins head trainer Nick Paparesta said. "It's always been a long-term type of situation. For him to get out there and do those things, he just has to gain a little bit more of that confidence and trust in that thing, and I think that's kind of where we are now."

Runnin' Royce

Royce Lewis , out since Opening Day because of a partly torn quad in his right leg, is expected to take another step forward at the end of this week. He'll move from running in a straight line to doing change-of-direction drills.

"This is a big week for him in regards to volume," Paparesta said.

Lewis' return is not imminent, though he is taking ground balls and swinging in the batting cage. Once he's running well while changing directions, his next hurdle will be running the bases for several days before he's cleared to begin a rehab assignment.

"Similar to Nick Gordon last year, it'll be a little bit lengthier progression of the bases due to the length of time he's been down," Paparesta said. "Then we'll get him into some rehab games from that point forward. Once he gets onto the bases, we'll have a pretty good idea of when that rehab progression will start."

Topa out until July

Twins reliever Justin Topa made four appearances on a rehab assignment before he was shut down with more soreness in his knee. He was diagnosed with a 25% tear of his left patellar tendon and he will be shut down for six weeks.

It's a disappointing setback for Topa, who was walking around the clubhouse with crutches Tuesday with his left leg immobilized in a brace.

"To have this, what I thought was a small little thing, snowball into a bigger, longer rehab type thing, it's extremely frustrating," Topa said. "Especially coming over to a new organization."

Topa, likely out through mid-July, declined knee surgery to try to salvage his 2024 season. He underwent platelet-rich plasma and stem cell injections after he received a second opinion from Dr. Tim Kremchek in Cincinnati.

"The injection was the best option to get back as fast as possible," said Topa, who had a 2.61 ERA over 69 innings for Seattle last year. "My goal from day one is to get this done and over with, pitch this year and make an impact this year. Unfortunately, there's a sense of, maybe, it was a waste of six weeks after the first go-round. This time we're on the right track."

When Topa, 33, initially felt knee pain in spring training, he said it was diagnosed as a "tendonitis type situation." He underwent a follow-up magnetic resonance imaging exam last week, receiving a second opinion when surgery was presented as an option.

"The goal here right now is to get it as best as possible, get into a spot that doesn't bother me throwing and circle back at the end of the season or maybe down the road" about surgery, Topa said.

* Twins reliever Brock Stewart underwent a platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injection in his right shoulder joint Monday. He hoped to begin throwing last weekend, but "we have to get his arm strength where it needs to be," Paparesta said.

* Michael Helman hit a three-run homer in the eighth inning while Diego A. Castillo produced four hits and three runs in the St. Paul Saints' 13-7 victory over the first-place Omaha Storm Chasers on Tuesday at CHS Field.

MINNEAPOLIS — Injured New York Yankees players DJ LeMahieu and Gerrit Cole are headed back to New York after spending time rehabbing at the team’s complex in Tampa, Florida, with LeMahieu likely to start a rehab assignment later this week.

LeMahieu took live at-bats and worked defensively before making the trip to New York while the Yankees begin a three-game series in Minnesota. Manager Aaron Boone said LeMahieu, who has been out all season after a non-displaced fracture of his right foot during spring training, would likely start a minor league rehab assignment on Thursday or Friday.

“Definitely want him to play games and get some volume under his belt,” Boone said pregame Monday, adding he was unsure of how many rehab games LeMahieu might play before being activated.

Meanwhile, Cole threw “30-some, 36 pitches or so” in his latest throwing session as he recovers from right elbow inflammation.

“Gerrit, everything went well,” Boone said. “Gerrit, just onward and upward.”

The Yankees also announced that outfielder Jasson Domínguez (Tommy John surgery recovery) and infielder Jorbit Vivas (left orbital fracture) are starting rehab assignments with Single-A Tampa. They faced former Yankee Domingo Germán, who made his first start with the Pirates’ Single-A affiliate Tuesday. Right-hander Tommy Kahnle (right shoulder inflammation) had his rehab assignment transferred to Double-A Somerset.
