Your resume skills and work experience

Many who are studying English are at key transitions in their life. Therefore, having the right skills to help is essential for ESL teachers.

Here are some of the most popular ESL teacher skills in 2024.

9 most popular ESL teacher skills

  • Bilingual or Multilingual
  • Learning Plans
  • Adult Instruction
  • Grammar & Composition
  • Differentiated Learning
  • Microsoft Office
  • Linguistics
  • Essay Grading

Sample ESL teacher work experience bullet points

An effective teacher knows how to put key skills to use in the classroom environment. Let’s look at how you can show your prior experiences have equipped you to succeed as a language instructor.

Organizations and your students will be concerned about the results you can give them. Examples that include metrics for grades, the number of students who have seen success from your lessons, or information retention will all go a long way in showing your abilities.

Hiring managers want to pick up on your core competencies as an instructor, so remembering to keep examples short and simple is key here.

Here are a few samples:

  • Prepared after-school assistance for 15 students who needed additional study time, improving grades by 37%.
  • Used PowerPoint and OBS Studio screen capture to create audio and visual resources that students could study at home for 57% better information retention.
  • Provided clear and friendly instruction while helping with any student struggles to achieve 98% positive feedback on post-course surveys.
  • Taught students common words and phrases that would be used on job sites to help lessons translate into real-world experience 75% more effectively.

Top 5 Tips for Your ESL Teacher Resume

  • As an English instructor, your use of the language will be paramount to your student’s success. Therefore, hiring managers will want to ensure you submit an accurate resume free of grammatical errors.
  • Think about how you would organize instructional information for your students. It would likely have clear headers, bullet points, and an easy-to-read font. Your resume template should be formatted similarly to clearly showcase your linguistics teaching skills to hiring managers.
  • You know from your time instructing that short sentences are clear and easier to understand. The same can be said for your resume. One sentence about how you use differentiated learning for 86% more positive outcomes on final exams can go a long way.
  • Effective teachers have high levels of knowledge and can relate well to their students. Your examples should showcase both, such as how you take feedback about information students are struggling to grasp and implement new lesson plans to improve essay scores by 67%.
  • ESL instruction is always evolving with new technology that can be used to facilitate learning and linguistics requirements for citizenships. Listing your most recent experiences first will be the most relevant to your ability to instruct over Zoom and help students pass current citizenship exams.

A resume summary is beneficial for instructors with ten or more years of experience. You could write a couple of sentences about how you’ve helped 545 ESL students pass citizenship exams and land jobs after taking lessons from you over your 12-year career.

Aim for a one-page resume with highly relevant information about your ESL instruction skills. Focusing on what the organization is looking for can help you decide what to include. For instance, if you’ll be working with primarily Spanish-speaking students, your bilingual skills in Spanish would be ideal to list.

A bachelor’s degree in education, English, or other related subjects is required for the job, so you should list it. Your education provides a well-rounded overview of your abilities to provide effective instruction to students.

ESL Teacher Resume Sample

This English teacher resume sample a.k.a. CV curriculum vitae highlights the academic expertise and English language teaching skills that Mona can bring to the school community.

This CV example includes a teaching skills section, which immediately shows the reader this candidate is qualified, and encourages further review. Breaking up the page into left and right sections bring more interest to the page, as well as highlights more areas. For instance, not only do you see the professional profile and skills section right away, but you also see the education section right off the bat.

Teachers Resume Writing Process

The quote on the left-hand side really adds to the resume, and solidifies what Mona can bring to a school. Having a quote from a current or past supervisor or principal really helps to solidify your skills and talents as an educator. It's a very powerful tool that goes a long way with a potential school.

In addition, the words "patient," "trustworthy," and "compassionate" are listed right at the top of the resume, effectively demonstrating her soft skills. These are soft skills that are very important for an ESL educator too, which is what you want to highlight.

You may notice several relevant focused keywords included in this ESL resume sample, such as literacy circle, learning centers, and interactive games. By listing a bunch of them in a section entitled "Areas of Expertise", she is letting the reader know easily what her strengths are as an educator, as well as what methods she likes to use in her classroom.

Since she has numerous teaching achievements, listing these really sells the reader on picking up the phone to call Mona and offer her a job interview. Instead of a traditional, chronological style resume format, Mona has opted for a combination style resume.

This type of resume really highlights her accomplishments. As an ESL educator, it's important to showcase your ability to improve students' language skills and really make a difference in their learning. This is exactly what Mona's resume does.

She has really emphasized her ability to support new English language learners, with bullet points such as this: "Provided supplemental in-class and cooperative ESL support to ELL students, developing and implementing diverse curriculum to effectively meet the needs of each student's learning style and ability."

The formatting for this English teacher resume sample is quite creative. While the use of columns on page one draws the eye to Mona's qualifications, the professional border and coloring make the entire document stand out above the competition. Key sections and information are highlighted in an incredible blue, which can be adapted and used for any academic subject.

The second page of this resume example continues on with the professional achievements section. You will notice that it has been properly headlined with her name at the top of the page along with the page number, followed by a heading detailing the continuation of the accomplishments section.

The professional achievements highlighted in the second page continue to be strong accomplishments, including: "Enriched and extended literacy levels among students by coordinating student group performances of Reader's Workshop student plays".

You can find additional information about writing an ESL teacher resume in this article.

Following the professional achievements section is Mona's teaching experience. In addition to detailing the job candidate's teaching experience, the sample ESL teacher resume provides information on the types of schools she has taught at, as well as the student population. This is important, as the type of student population will let the reader know how many ESL students she had and what type of support they have.

Mona's everyday duties are also detailed under her current teaching position. In this paragraph, the subjects she teaches are highlighted, testing preparation, as well as school involvement.

Because Mona has been teaching for a very long time, it's not important to highlight every teaching position, so in Mona's resume, her older teaching experiences are listed underneath in an italics paragraph that does not list the years employed since they were so long ago. This way, the experiences are listed, while also not specifically highlighting how old she is. If a school fears she may retire soon, she may be overlooked for a teaching position.

Mona's community involvement and recognition as Teacher of the Month are also very prevalent, and prompt the reader to think of her as an exceptional teacher candidate. Lastly, this section is followed by her technical proficiencies which highlight her ability to excel in a 21st century learning environment.

The resume is completed with a call to request references if desired. References should always be placed on a separate sheet of paper from your resume. As your references are a powerful document in your application process, only provide them when asked for, otherwise provide them at the job interview.

Here is an example of the same English teacher resume in text format. This would be the version of the resume that you would submit online to job postings that ask for a text format.

A resume objective is a brief statement at the beginning of your resume that summarizes the skills and experience you bring to a position. It should be tailored to the job you are applying for and highlight why you are the best person for the job. When writing a resume objective for an ESL teacher position, it is important to include your teaching experience, any certifications or special qualifications, and your ability to effectively communicate with students from diverse backgrounds. For example, "Experienced ESL teacher with 3+ years in language instruction looking to leverage certification in TESOL to provide engaging and effective lessons to students from diverse cultural backgrounds." This statement conveys your qualifications as an ESL teacher while focusing on your ability to connect with students from different cultures. Another example could be "Highly motivated ESL educator with 5+ years of classroom experience seeking a role as a lead English language instructor dedicated to helping international students excel in their studies." This statement highlights both your enthusiasm for teaching ESL and your commitment to helping international students achieve their goals.

Common Mistakes When Writing an ESL Teacher Resume Objective

An ESL teacher resume objective is an important part of a job application as it provides a potential employer with insight into the candidate’s skills, experience and qualifications. As such, it’s important that this section of the resume is written accurately and effectively. Unfortunately, there are several common mistakes made when writing an ESL teacher resume objective that can hinder a candidate’s chances of success.

The first mistake to avoid is writing an overly generic objective. A generic statement such as “seeking an ESL teaching position in which I can utilize my skills and experience” is too vague and does not differentiate the applicant from other candidates. Instead, it should focus on the specific value that the candidate can bring to the role, such as “Utilizing my extensive experience in teaching English as a Second Language to help students develop their language skills and confidence in communication.”

Another mistake to avoid is including irrelevant information in the objective statement. This could include personal goals or aspirations that have nothing to do with teaching ESL. While these may be important goals, they are not relevant to the job at hand and should be left out of this section of the resume.

Finally, many candidates make the mistake of using jargon or technical language without explaining what it means or how it relates to their job prospects. For example, using terms like “multi-lingual proficiency” without explaining how this could benefit students or employers will not be effective for most positions. Instead, use clear language that shows your understanding of how your qualifications can help you succeed in an ESL teaching role.

Overall, when writing an ESL teacher resume objective it is important to avoid making any of these common mistakes so that your application stands out from other candidates and presents you in a positive light to potential employers. By focusing on specific skills and experiences while avoiding jargon or irrelevant information, you can create an effective objective statement that will increase your chances of success when applying for ESL teaching positions.
