Entering the Paris Olympics, there were plenty of stories covering the medals that would be issued and the small piece of the Eiffel Tower that each medal contains. 

But during the Games, the biggest question about the medal ceremonies is all about the additional mysterious gift that is presented to every medal winner. 

What's in the box?

The other reward is a long, skinny box that contains the official poster for the event, which was designed by Ugo Gattoni . 

The poster was first unveiled in March. Illustrator Gattoni spent almost 2,000 hours and four months creating the colorful poster that is full of symbolism and intricate details.

The entire poster was done by hand, which is why each character in the crowd is unique.

If athletes look closely, they will find that eight mascots are hiding within the posters. 

In additions to the poster, winners receive one additional gift (though not on the podium). Athletes are given a gold, silver or bronze medal-winning mascot . The medal emblem is sewn onto the front of the Phryge to serve as another reminder of their incredible accomplishment.

Why do Olympic medal winners get a cardboard box – and what’s in it?

The 2024 Paris Olympics is well underway as the world’s athletes continue to compete for gold in sports ranging from swimming to skateboarding. Some events have already wrapped up, with Team GB securing a few medals in the early days .

But this year, the Paris Olympic organisers have thrown in a bonus prize for medal winners too: a mysterious cardboard box.

Some viewers have been confused to see these Olympians handed a long, thin cardboard box as they have the medals hung around their neck. The box is yellow, and a roll of paper can be seen through its window.

This is a Paris-themed poster, specially made for this year’s Olympics. Designed by French artist Ugo Gattoni, the limited-edition illustration is being given as a special thanks to winning competitors.

The poster show a cartoon version of Paris, complete with a bright-red Eiffel Tower and the Seine. Sporting events are taking place all over the city centre as spectators watch on, seated in a giant stadium.

On the front of the Eiffel Tower, you will see the words ‘XXXIII Olympiade,’ as this year’s Olympics mark the 33rd edition of the games.

It also has the words XXXIII Olympiade referencing the fact that Paris 2024 is the 33rd edition of the Games.

The intricately-detailed piece of work reportedly took Mr Gattoni 6 months of full-time work, and a night-time edition of the art can be viewed on the artist’s social media accounts.

“It’s a new, key moment in the Paris 2024 story,” said Paris 2024 president Tony Estanguet at the unveiling of the poster in March.

“We’ve tried to be different and imagine posters that look like us, posters that go beyond a mere logo.”

With close to 1,000 medals up for grabs at the games, there’s a lot of posters to go around. Expect to see athletes share their awards online and tell fans their plans for their posters.

In Paris, when athletes make it onto the podium after finishing in the top three in an Olympic event, they aren't just given gold, silver, or bronze medals—presenters are giving the medalists a mysterious box. Naturally, we were very curious: What's inside the box?

Paris 2024 Olympics Poster

The poster shows a vivid vision of Paris, featuring iconic landmarks such as Pont Alexandre III, the Eiffel Tower, and the Arc de Triomphe. "I wanted to tell the story of Paris 2024 so that there would be an overview of the entire project, to take sport out of the sporting arenas," Joachim Roncin, director of design for Paris 2024, said. "I wanted the poster to tell countless things, to be full of symbols. There are many small details, they’re stories within the stories."

In addition to receiving their medal and the official poster, medalists are given a plush version of the Paris Olympic mascot after the ceremony.

Medalists get a box while on the podium — but what’s in it?

As athletes stand on the podium to accept their medals, they are also handed a slender, gold box. But what's inside?

Olympians are gifted the official poster for the 2024 Paris Olympics, which is tucked inside the 40-centimeter box, according to the Olympics official website .

Australian canoeist Jessica Fox, who already won two gold medals at this year's Summer Games, gave a close-up look at the unique memorabilia in a TikTok video on July 31.

"A lot of people have been asking, 'What's in the box that we get given on the podium when we receive our medals in Paris," Fox said in the clip.

"Usually we get the mascot or we get flowers, but this time, it's a little bit more unique, and I think it's actually a really cool concept," she continued.

Fox unraveled her colorful poster with a gold detail on it, which she explained can be either gold, silver or bronze, depending on the athlete's medal.

The poster was created by renowned illustrator Ugo Gattoni, who invested close to four months and 2,000 hours into its design and production, the artist said in a March interview on Olympics.com.

Joachim Roncin, the director of design for the 2024 Paris Olympics, told Olympics.com that he "wanted the poster to tell countless things, to be full of symbols."

"There are many small details, they're stories within the stories," he added.

Gattoni's design features a "fantasy city" that doubles as a grand stadium with Parisian landmarks , like the Eiffel Tower, River Seine and Arc de Triomphe. It also includes symbols of the Games, such as the Olympic rings , the Agitos and Olympic medals, plus depictions of several sports like diving, breaking and swimming.

In a historic first for the Summer Games, both the Olympic and Paralympic posters were designed together, according to the Olympics website. Though each poster can stand alone, when combined, Gattoni's design becomes a singular, united image.

Gattoni produced the poster by hand and is "very happy with it," per his March interview on the Olympics website. He said at the time that he looked forward to seeing "how much people appreciate it."

Posters have been created for the Olympic Games since the early 20th century, according to the Olympic Museum's official website .

In addition to the poster, medalists will also receive a mascot plush toy, inspired by Phrygian caps , with their medal's color and the word "Bravo" in French, per the Olympics website.

While the Olympic medals are a customary gift for winning athletes, this year's awards also have a special touch to them: Each gold, silver and bronze medal has an 18-gram hexagonal piece of iron from the Eiffel Tower embedded in its design.

It is not just medals that our Australian champions have been receiving on the podium during the Paris Olympics.

In lieu of things such as flowers or wreaths, athletes are being handed long cardboard boxes with no markings on them.

So what is in them? A very thin bottle of French champagne? Maybe a freshly baked baguette?

Of course not. It's the work of this guy …

Inside the box is the official Olympic poster of Paris 2024, designed by Ugo Gattoni, showing a cartoon version of Paris with a picture of a big red Eiffel Tower and the Seine, surrounded by sports taking place.

It also has the words XXXIII Olympiade, referencing the fact that Paris 2024 is the 33rd edition of the Games.

Athletes also get this summer Games' mascot as a cuddly toy — and of course their medals, which all include a part of the Eiffel Tower in them .

The Paris Olympics are finally here. More than 10,000 athletes have descended on the French capital for more than two weeks of competition, patriotism and potential drama. NPR’s own Olympics team will bring you recaps, coverage and color — including on the ground in Paris — online and on air over the next few weeks.

The first trove of medals were awarded this weekend at the Paris Olympics but medals weren't the only prize handed to the athletes.

At the medal ceremony for the Rugby Sevens on Saturday, players from the winning teams — France, Fiji and South Africa — were handed a slim cardboard box.

Team USA wins its first medal of the Paris Summer Olympics

According to the Olympics , the mysterious gift is an official poster for the Games. This summer, medal-winning athletes will be presented with a poster alongside a bronze, silver or gold medal.

The posters were designed by Parisian illustrator Ugo Gattoni. In an interview with the Olympics back in March, Gattoni said the illustrations took him four months and 2,000 hours to create.

The colorful posters — all done by hand — are packed with details and symbolism, paying homage to both the world's biggest sporting event and the city of love. Some of the details include a gold medal , the Paris Olympic mascot , the boats featured at the opening ceremony , breakdancing as well as iconic French monuments like the Eiffel Tower and the Seine River. Speaking of mascots, medal-winning athletes are also gifted with a plush version of this summer's mascot — the red bonnet, known as the Phrygian cap , famously worn by Marianne, the artistic personification of the free French republic.

The stuffed toy, which is awarded after the medal ceremony, include a gold, silver or bronze medal emblem on the mascot's belly and the word "Bravo" in French on the back of the plushie, according to the Olympics.

Medalists for the Paralympic Games will also receive a plushie with the word "Bravo" written in Braille.
