Earning a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) online can unlock doors to new career paths and leadership positions, increase earning potential, and lower unemployment . However, paying for a doctoral degree program after earning, in most cases, a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree may be a barrier for some students.

Because online Ph.D. programs focus on educating leaders and innovators within a given field, many financial support options exist to help students afford doctoral degrees. This article highlights some of the most financially supportive Ph.D. programs in the U.S., including those that may offer students a path to earning a doctorate degree for free.

It also includes expert guidance from Blanca Villagomez, a program coordinator and counselor at UC-Irvine, on choosing the Ph.D. program that’s right for you.

What You Should Know About Free Ph.D. Programs

Attending a Ph.D. program for free typically means that a student receives enough financial support from the institution and other sources to fully cover the cost of their doctoral degree, not that the school doesn’t charge tuition and fees for attendance. Students should carefully research any colleges that claim to offer online doctoral programs without charging tuition, as this is not common among legitimate post-secondary institutions.

The most common types of funding for online Ph.D. programs include fellowships, assistantships, grants, and scholarships.

Find a fully-funded Ph.D. program

As you research Ph.D. programs, you may encounter the phrase “fully funded.” This is how schools typically advertise free doctoral programs, as it means that students receive funding that completely covers their cost of attendance.

In fully-funded doctoral programs, students often receive assistantships or fellowships. Students who receive an assistantship are employed by their university, often as teaching assistants (TAs) for undergraduate classes or research assistants (RAs) to faculty or researchers. Arrangements vary by school and program, and students may either receive payment that they can use to pay for tuition and other expenses or have their tuition waived in exchange for their employment. In addition to maintaining academic standards, students must fulfill their work obligations to keep their assistantship.

Meanwhile, fellowships are awards given to students in doctoral programs to continue pursuing an academic focus or interest. Schools and outside organizations can offer fellowships, which are similar to research grants. Fellowships operate more like research grants in that students are expected to use this financial support to help them further their research goals, but there aren’t specific work expectations like there are for assistantships.

In both cases, students may also receive benefits like health insurance, a stipend for living expenses, and tuition waivers. However, it’s important to note that fully-funded Ph.D. programs tend to be highly competitive with limited availability. Students should inquire early about the eligibility criteria for available fellowships and assistantships to ensure they submit a strong application.

Seek out scholarships and grants

Scholarships and grants can also help students cover the cost of online doctoral programs. These types of funding are considered gift aid because they don’t have to be repaid and often don’t have requirements like assistantships or fellowships. Scholarships and grants are often awarded based on financial need, although some may be awarded to students based on academic or professional merit.

Students can obtain scholarships and grants for doctoral degree programs through their institution or outside sources, such as professional organizations, private non-profits and endowments, federal and state governments, and community and religious groups.

In order to obtain need-based aid, students must typically submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Students should consult with their school’s financial aid office to learn more about available scholarship and grant opportunities.

Here are a couple examples to give you an idea of exactly how these awards work for online doctoral programs:

CAPCSD Ph.D. Scholarships Every year, the Council of Academic Programs in Communication Sciences and Disorders awards $20,000 to students enrolled in a Ph.D. program for communication sciences and disorders. Applicants must submit a curriculum vitae, a summary of their research dissertation plan, and a letter of support from their research advisor signed by the program director. Russell Sage Foundation Dissertation Research Grants This award of up to $10,000 is for students in doctoral programs who are researching topics related to the Russell Sage Foundation’s mission of improving social and living conditions in the United States. These funds must be used specifically for dissertation research expenses, such as study participant incentives, laboratory costs, and travel.

Avoid non-accredited degree mills

When prioritizing free or low-cost Ph.D. programs, it’s important to also be mindful of the quality and legitimacy of the institutions you’re considering.

Make sure that any private college you’re considering is a nonprofit organization. Many private for-profit organizations that offer online doctoral programs, especially those claiming “free” doctoral degree programs, are actually degree mills. This means they operate like a postsecondary institution even though they don’t have the proper accreditation to award legitimate doctoral degrees .

Degree mills focus more on generating revenue than providing high-quality education. They often attract users by advertising free tuition, only to charge an assortment of other fees (exam fees, graduation fees, etc.). They also often lack qualified faculty, effective curriculums, and sufficient support staff.

Says Villagomez, “Attending a non-accredited college or degree mill can negatively impact a student’s post-graduate opportunities, including employment and professional licensure, as many employers don’t recognize degrees from these types of schools.”

There are a few ways to determine whether a doctoral program is legitimate. Look up the doctoral program online for information about accreditation and non-profit or for-profit status. You can independently verify this information using the U.S. Department of Education’s Database of Accredited Postsecondary Institutions and Programs (DAPIP). Look for the names of regional accrediting organizations . Colleges approved by one of these organizations are held to strict standards for academic quality, ensuring that students will be prepared to enter their chosen field upon graduation.

An additional clue is the URL of the school’s website. Ensure that the school’s domain name ends in “.edu,” as this signifies it is a recognized educational institution. Other suffixes, such as “.org” or “.com,” indicate that the school is likely for-profit and may lack accreditation.

“When deciding whether to pursue an online or on-campus Ph.D. program, there are several factors to consider,” Villagomez says. “Due to the rigorous nature of a doctorate program, an online program can offer students the flexibility to manage multiple responsibilities while studying and attending classes. However, an on-campus program may be more suitable for those who prefer direct contact with faculty, peers, and resources.”

Support for research and dissertation preparation is another consideration. “Since a Ph.D. degree consists of extensive research, be sure to screen available programs based on what your research opportunities look like,” Villagomez says. “Conducting research requires many hours of independent study and discipline, so choosing between an online or on-campus program can impact your research trajectory. Ensuring that you have the best team by your side for your dissertation is also imperative. You want to evaluate the strength of a department’s faculty and assess how you will stay connected with them depending on the program setting.”

How much does an online Ph.D. degree program cost?

There are several factors that determine how much an online Ph.D. degree can cost, including the type of school a student attends and how much financial support they receive.

According to the Education Data Initiative , as of 2023, the average cost of a Ph.D. at a public university was $72,990, while students at private institutions paid an average of $101,810 for their doctoral degrees.

As noted above, there are many options students can explore to lower the cost of their Ph.D. degrees. Earning an online degree can also save students money, as it allows students to live in an area with a lower cost of living, eliminates transportation costs like gas and parking, and provides more flexibility so students can continue to work while earning their degree.

For the most accurate information on the cost of a Ph.D. program, consult with a financial aid counselor at your school.

How long does it take to earn an online Ph.D. degree?

The duration of Ph.D. programs varies widely, as they often include flexible timeframes for completing all course and dissertation requirements. According to the National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics (NCSES), as of 2020, the average completion time for a doctorate degree was about eight years. Doctorate degrees in physical and earth sciences took the least amount of time to complete, with an average of 6.3 years. Meanwhile, doctorate degrees in education took, on average, 12 years to complete.

Students should consult with an admissions counselor or program representative from potential programs to get more specific information on the length of time they can expect to be in their Ph.D. program.

Is an online Ph.D. degree worth it?

“Earning an online Ph.D. can provide students with opportunities to advance their careers, develop expertise in their chosen fields, and produce scholarly research,” Villagomez says. “However, determining its worth depends on a student’s personal needs, educational goals, and potential career outcomes. I recommend students evaluate those variables seriously to make an informed decision before pursuing this degree.

Villagomez also points out that, even if students are attending a Ph.D. program for free, earning a doctorate still requires a significant time investment. “These types of programs often require a minimum commitment of five years, although they can often extend beyond that. But longer graduate programs may not always equate to a higher return on investment.” Students should research the earning potential for the career or job they plan to pursue and compare that to the financial and time investment required for a Ph.D. program to help them determine if a program is worth it.

How Do You Apply for a Tuition-Free University in the USA?

Americans can apply for tuition-free universities if they’ve met certain criteria or requirements. Usually, these universities have eligibility requirements like the financial conditions of your family, academic performance, and others. 1. university of illinois urbana-champaign.

Founded in the year 1867, the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign is the flagship school of the University of Illinois system. It is a public land-grant institution and is considered a “Public Ivy” – meaning it provides Ivy League-level education at a cheap (and for some, free) price.

The university offers 150 undergraduate and 100 graduate programs through its 15 academic departments. These are the schools of Agriculture, Fine & Applied Arts, Engineering, Medicine, Information Science, Health Science, Law, Education, Liberal Arts & Science, Business, Media, Social Work, Aviation, Labor & Employment Relations, Veterinary Medicine, and Medicine.

Through the Illinois commitment, the university offers free tuition for four years for in-state students and enrollees from families with an income of $67,100 and below. The caveat here though is the strict admission process, as the university often requires a high GPA and SAT/ACT, especially in the College of Engineering.

2. University of Houston

The University of Houston (UH) is a public research institution that serves as the flagship campus of the UH system. Founded in 1927, it is the third-largest school in the state of Texas.

UH’s academic programs are offered through the Colleges of Architecture, Arts, Business, Education, Engineering, Hotel & Restaurant Management, Law, Liberal Arts & Social Science, Natural Science & Mathematics, Nursing, Optometry, Pharmacy, Social Work, Technology, and Medicine.

UH offers free tuition to select students through the Cougar Promise. Those eligible are Texas residents who are first-time, full-time students of the university.

Through this, the free university in the USA aims to grant financial assistance to applicants who come from families with an annual income of less than $65,000. Certain discounts are also given to applicants from families earning $65,001 to $125,000 annually.

3. Virginia State University

Virginia State University, also known as Virginia or VSU, is a public land-grant institution situated in Ettrick, Virginia. It opened in the year 1882 as Virginia Normal and Collegiate Institution, which is the first state-supported school for black Americans.

VSU’s degrees are organized according to the Colleges of Agriculture, Business, Engineering & Technology, Natural Science, Education, Humanities & Social Science, and Graduate Studies. To date, more than 4,700 students are majoring in such programs.

Just recently, VSU launched a free tuition program for eligible students who live near the campus. This is made possible by the Virginia College Affordability Network, which aims to fulfill the needs of students regarding access and completion. Priority is given to graduates of the Colonial Heights, Petersburg, and Matoaca High Schools, although eligible applicants from other institutions will also be considered.

4. Washington State University

Washington State University – known colloquially as WSU or Wazzu – is a public land-grant and research institution situated in Pullman, Washington. Established in 1890, it is one of the first land-grant schools in the American West.

The university, which also has campuses in Spokane, Tri-cities, Everett, and Vancouver Canada, is organized into the Colleges of Agricultural & Natural Resource, Arts & Science, Business, Communication, Education, Engineering & Architecture, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, and Veterinary Medicine.

These colleges have helped launch WSU into one of the best public universities in the US. To date, it is internationally renowned for its Engineering and Veterinary Medicine programs.

As per the Cougar Commitment, WSU offers free tuition to students coming from low to middle-income families. This free university in the USA will pay off the tuition balance and other fees not covered by the Washington College or Pell Grants. The offer may be renewed for 3 more years or a total of 8 continuous semesters.

5. University of Nebraska System

The University of Nebraska system is a public university consortium that started in the year 1869. From having a lone campus in Lincoln, the system now has 3 universities (Lincoln, Omaha, and Kearney) as well as a 2-year technical college.

Applicants at the 3 campuses are eligible for free tuition under the Nebraska Promise. To qualify, the student must be a full-time undergraduate student and a resident of Nebraska. His/her family income should be $60,000 or less.

After meeting these requirements, the student can apply at the campus of his/her choice. He/she then needs to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid form to have his/her family income and eligibility assessed.

To maintain the free tuition status, the student should maintain a GPA of 2.5 or higher.

6. East Tennessee State University

The East Tennessee State University or ETSU is a research-centric institution based in Johnson City, Tennessee. Founded in 1911 as the East Tennessee State Normal School, it has evolved into one of the state’s largest universities.

ETSU offers undergraduate and graduate programs in the fields of Arts & Science, Business & Technology, Clinical & Rehabilitative Science, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, and Public Health.

The university also offers unique degrees, such as that in Bluegrass, Old Time & Country Music, as well as Appalachian Studies. It also offers a Master’s in Storytelling, which is the only program of its kind in the US.

ETSU offers free tuition for first-time, full-time freshmen students who are recipients of either the Tennessee Student Assistance or Tennessee Hope Lottery Scholarship Award. This will cover tuition and program service fees but will exclude the costs of on-campus housing. The scholarship is also limited to in-state students.

7. Middle Tennessee State University

The Middle Tennessee State University or MTSU is a public university that first opened its doors in 1911. Formerly a normal school, the Murfreesboro-based university now offers more than 300 programs through its 35 departments. These are organized under the Colleges of Basic & Applied Science, Behavioral & Health Science, Education, Liberal Arts, Media & Entertainment, and Business.

MTSU also offers unique programs, such as Recording Industry Management, Concrete Industry Management, and Flight Dispatch, to name a few.

Like ETSU, MTSU offers free tuition to first-time, full-time, in-state students who have received either the Pell Grant or the HOPE Lottery Scholarship.

8. Clark University

Clark University is a private research institution located in Worcester, Massachusetts. It opened in 1887 thanks to the endowment given by businessman Jonas Gilman Clark. Formerly a graduate school, it eventually accepted undergraduate students in the year 1902.

The university, which is nestled in the Main South Neighborhood, oversees Clark College, an undergraduate liberal arts college that offers 32 programs. It also has a Graduate School of Management, Graduate School of Geography, School of Professional Studies, School of Psychology, and School of Chemistry & Biochemistry.

Despite being a private school, Clark University offers free tuition to eligible Worcester residents who have lived in the University Park neighborhood in the last five years. The coverage, which spans four years, is given to applicants who meet the guidelines for federal and state scholarship programs.

9. The University of Maine at Augusta

The University of Maine at Augusta (UMA) is a regional state institution based in Central Maine. As a member of the UM system since 1965, it was developed to offer 31 degrees and 37 certificates to residents of the area.

UMA is currently divided into two academic schools, namely that of Arts & Sciences and Professional Studies.

Despite being a small institution, the university is renowned for offering online undergraduate programs in the fields of Information & Library Science.

At UMA, students can study for free through the Pine Tree State Pledge. Those who are eligible can either be new or transfer students who were given the Federal Pell Grant.

10. University of the Virgin Islands

The University of Virgin Islands (UVI) is a land-grant university located in the picturesque isles of St. Croix, St. Thomas, and St. John. Founded in 1962 as the College of the Virgin Islands, it is one of the 101 historically black colleges and universities in the United States.

UVI follows a liberal arts curriculum for its business, Education, Humanities & Social Science, Nursing, and Science & mathematics programs. It also shares instruction with other American universities, such as Engineering (together with the University of Florida , Washington University – St. Louis, and the University of South Carolina ) and Medicine (with Boston University ).

UVI’s free tuition is offered to Virgin Islands residents regardless of age, family income, or date of graduation. To maintain this eligibility, the student needs to maintain a 2.50 GPA. After graduation, he/she should then work in the island chain for a specified time.

Hello for Master’s, there’s not many scholarships available for international students. 95%+ of the Master’s funding is in the form of Graduate Assistantships and like you have experienced, they are hard to get. Majority of Master’s students in US are full pay, while some do graduate assistantships. There are some competitive Master’s scholarships like Fulbright and Knight-Hennessy that you can take a look at.

Universities in the United States can be divided into two types: public universities and private universities.

Public universities are financed by the state in which they are based. Because of this, public universities charge less for students from within the state and more for students from outside the state, including international students.

Private universities are not financed by their state, but by private donors, research funds and tuition fees. For this reason, private universities generally charge higher tuition fees than public universities and require all students to pay the same amount, regardless of whether they come from out-of-state or abroad.

Method of Study

The main difference between a PhD in the US and a PhD in Europe lies in the program structure. Whereas a European PhD essentially consists of a single phase lasting three to four years , an American PhD consists of three different phases, each with its own time frame.

• Phase One – The first phase lasts approximately two years and focuses on building a basic foundation for the doctoral student. This phase consists largely of taught components such as lectures, tutorials and laboratory sessions, in which the student learns more about theoretical concepts and research methods within their discipline.
• Phase Two – The second phase can be considered an assessment phase, which runs both periodically alongside and at the end of the first phase. Here, students complete coursework and take exams on the basis of the material they have covered of which they must pass in order to proceed to the third phase.
• Phase Three – The third phase lasts approximately three years and resembles the European PhD structure. During this period, the student undertakes an independent research project, including forming a research design, conducting experiments, writing a thesis (more commonly referred to in the USA as a dissertation) and sitting a viva exam.

Teaching Requirements

Besides structure, a key difference between a PhD program in the US and in Europe is the focus on teaching requirements. In the US, doctoral students are expected to lecture, lead tutorials, host laboratory sessions, mark coursework and provide office hours for undergraduate students. Although students studying in European will likely contribute to these at some point during their study, this would normally be on a voluntary basis and involve less time commitment.

Another difference is project flexibility. In Europe, students typically apply to a PhD project predetermined by a supervisor, and although there may be some scope to adapt the project, depending on the funding provider , it will usually be limited to how the project is carried out rather than what it is about. In the US, however, a student applies to become a doctoral candidate within a department rather than applying for a particular research project. This is because students are expected to decide on their thesis topic (also commonly referred to as a dissertation research topic) near the end of their first phase after they have developed a better understanding of their subject and know where their interests lie. Therefore, research students in the US generally have more flexibility and influence in the direction of their research than students in the United Kingdom or Europe.

PhD admission into US universities can be highly competitive, both because of the limited number of positions and the large number of annual applicants.

The eligibility requirements for a doctoral program in the USA can generally be divided into four sections:

• Grade Point Average ( GPA ) – in the US, a scoring system known as Grade Point Average is used to measure academic ability. A student’s GPA is calculated as a weighted score of the subjects they study during their undergraduate degree; an equivalent score is calculated by universities for international applicants. Although universities rarely set minimum GPA requirements for doctoral study, it’s worth being aware that a GPA of 3.0 is equivalent to a UK second class honours (2:1); the typical entry requirement for UK universities.
• Graduate Records Exam (GRE) – most universities will require you to take a series of examinations known as Graduate Records Exams, which are used to determine your suitability for graduate study. GREs will assess your analytical, reasoning and critical thinking skills as well as your depth of your subject.
• Student aptitude – in addition to academic ability, US universities also look for characteristics of a strong researcher. These include traits such as engaging in the subject in your own time, e.g. by attending talks and conferences, demonstrating a high degree of independence and enthusiasm, and a general passion for your subject.
• English Language Proficiency – international students whose first language is not English must sit language exams such as IELTS or TOELF to demonstrate their English language proficiency.

International students will also require a F1 student visa in order to study in the US, however, you would typically apply for this after you have secured a place into a doctorate program.

When applying for a PhD position at a graduate school, the application process will differ between universities, however, they will all typically ask for the following:

• Academic CV – a short document summarising your educational background and current level of experience .
• Personal statement – a document which outlines why you believe you are suitable for PhD study and your passion for the subject.
• Academic transcripts – a complete breakdown of the modules and their respective marks you have taken as part of your previous/current degree.
• GRE scores – a transcript of your Graduate Records Exam results.

The program offers all admitted doctoral students, who remain in good standing, 4 years of tuition remission and a stipend for each academic year. The goal of the program is to prepare students for careers in research and teaching and to provide students with the scientific background and clinical skills necessary to engage in clinical practice. The program challenges students to integrate their scientific research with clinical work and to study areas in clinical psychology, including Child and Adolescent, Clinical Neuropsychology, Forensic, and Health specialties.

3. Harvard University

(Cambridge, MA): The Harvard University Department of Psychology offers a fully funded PhD in Clinical Psychology. All admitted doctoral students receive fellowship packages with up to 6 years of tuition, 3 years of 10-month support, 4 summers of research fellowships, and the guarantee of a Teaching Fellowship for the 3rd and 4th years. The Clinical Psychology Program trains clinical psychologists to conduct research using evidence-based methods of assessment and clinical intervention to advance scientific knowledge of psychopathology and its treatment, especially in severe psychopathology.

4. Louisiana State University

(Baton Rouge, LA): The Lousiana State University (LSU) Department of Psychology’s Clinical Psychology Training Program (CPTP) offers a fully funded PhD in Clinical Psychology. All admitted doctoral students receive a full-tuition waiver, a stipend of approximately $15,050 per year, and a graduate assistantship. The CPTP program is didactic and experiential. Students complete coursework, attend practicum supervision meetings, shadow senior graduate student therapists, and gain direct supervised clinical experience through their practica. After students complete a minimum of 24 credit hours practicum, they are required to complete a formal, one-year, full-time pre-doctoral internship at an APA-accredited internship program.

5. Northwestern University, Feinberg School of Medicine

(Chicago, IL): The Northwestern University Department of Psychology and Behavioral Sciences at the Feinberg School of Medicine offers a fully funded PhD in Clinical Psychology. All admitted doctoral students receive a Research Assistant Scholarship, or equivalent award, that provides full-tuition remission, health insurance, and a monthly stipend. The goal of the program is to educate and train students for clinical and research positions in academic medical centers and related healthcare settings. Students receive intensive research training, and in addition to coursework, students complete research apprenticeships within their primary mentor’s lab.

6. Rutgers University

(New Brunswick, NJ): The Rutgers University Department of Psychology offers a fully funded PhD in Clinical Psychology. All admitted doctoral students are guaranteed 5 years of funding, provided they remain in good standing, which includes full-tuition, a 10-month stipend or salary, and health benefits. Additional funding summer funding is also available. The Clinical Psychology program is designed for students who want to conduct clinical research and become a practicing health service psychologist. Upon completion of the required coursework, research, and clinical training, PhD students complete their clinical requirements with a one-year psychological residency.

7. University of Liverpool

(Liverpool, UK): Available to EU citizens only, the Doctorate in Clinical Psychology is a 3-year full-time programme fully funded by the National Health Service (NHS). Trainees are registered postgraduate students in the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences and employed within Mersey Care NHS Trust.

8. University of Maryland

(College Park, MD): The University of Maryland Department of Psychology offers a fully funded PhD in Clinical Psychology. All admitted doctoral students are provided tuition remission of up to 10 credits per semester and financial aid in the form of a fellowship or graduate assistantship for the first 5 years. The Clinical Psychology Doctoral Program seeks to understand human behavior across the lifespan and provides clinical training in both child and adult assessment and intervention. The program uses a mentorship model to provide rigorous research training that emphasizes the use of research findings to further understand clinical phenomena and develop clinical interventions.

9. University of Michigan

(Ann Arbor, MI):  The University of Michigan Department of Psychology offers a fully funded PhD in Clinical Psychology. All admitted doctoral students receive a financial aid package that combines Research Fellowships and Graduate Student Instructor (GSI) positions for a total of 5 years of full-tuition support. The Clinical Psychology Doctoral Program aims to advance scientific research in all aspects of clinical psychology. Research areas currently include cognitive and affective neuroscience, behavioral endocrinology, developmental psychopathology, risk and resilience, violence and trauma, and cross-cultural investigations of clinical problems and these approaches span traditional diagnoses including addictive, affective, psychotic, anxiety, traumatic, and disruptive behavior.

10. University of Minnesota

( Minneapolis ,  MN):  The University of Minnesota Department of Psychology offers a fully funded PhD in Clinical Psychology. All admitted doctoral students, who remain in good standing, are guaranteed 5 years of financial support, including full-tuition, subsidized health insurance, and a 9-month stipend. The Clinical Science and Psychopathology Research (CSPR) program trains students to become academic clinical psychologists or research scientists. The program combines rigorous research training in psychopathology and clinical assessment and intervention. CSPR consists of an “adult” track and a “developmental” track.

11. University of Southern Mississippi

(Hattiesburg, MS): The University of Southern Mississippi Department of Psychology offers a fully funded PhD in Clinical Psychology. Students receive a graduate assistantship that provides a full-tuition scholarship and a 9-12 month stipend, and include teaching and research assistantships, and paid clinical externship positions. The program trains evidence-based approaches to the assessment and therapy of clinical problems, through small cohorts that allow for individualized training, with an emphasis on cognitive and behavioral orientations.

12. University of Vermont

(Burlington, VT): The University of Vermont Department of Psychological Science offers a fully funded PhD in Clinical Psychology. The Clinical Training PhD Program provides funding for every PhD student, each year that he or she is in the program and on campus. The program seeks to produce clinical psychologists who are trained to generate research, work with patients, and teach psychological material from a scientist-practitioner perspective. It is a mentor-based training model that stresses early and ongoing placement on a clinical practicum team, simultaneous research training relevant to clinical problems, rigorous course work, and selected teaching experiences.

13. Vanderbilt University

(Nashville, TN):  The Clinical Science Program in Psychological Sciences at Vanderbilt University offers a fully funded PhD in Clinical Psychology. All admitted PhD students receive funding for up to 5 years of study, including full-tuition, a competitive monthly stipend, and health insurance. The goal of the program is to train clinical scientists. It enables students to concentrate their training and develop specialized expertise in areas such as psychopathology, developmental psychopathology, adult psychopathology. In addition, a select group of qualified students is nominated for additional honor scholarships and fellowships awarded by both the college and the graduate school.

14. Yale University

(New Haven, CT): The Yale Graduate Program in Clinical Psychology offers a fully funded PhD in Clinical Psychology. The program provides all admitted graduate students, who remain in good standing, full-tuition and a stipend (including summer funding) for up to 5 years. The program is primarily research-based. Students are expected to develop independent research under the supervision of faculty. This program is ideal for students who desire to begin an independent, structured program of clinical science research and are likely to emerge as leaders in the study of psychopathology and its treatment. The program is not a fit for students primarily interested in clinical practice.

We offer six types of doctoral degrees in over eighty fields of study. Most of our doctoral degrees are PhDs; we also offer a Doctor of Education, Doctor of Environmental Science and Engineering, Doctor of Public Health, Doctor of Musical Arts, and Doctor of Nursing Practice.

COMPLETE COURSEWORK AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS

Doctoral programs vary widely in the number of required courses as well as additional requirements. Most programs use the first year to prepare students for their chosen field. Some programs conduct an end-of-the-year exam for each first-year cohort, while others evaluate student by courses, papers, and projects completed in that first year. In addition to being assigned a Student Affairs Officer (SAO) by your program, you’ll also mutually choose your Faculty Advisor. Generally this is a natural process where a student’s and a faculty member’s interests and areas of specialization align. This relationship is an important one, which lasts well beyond a student’s tenure at UCLA. In your first year, you’ll take courses with a wide variety of faculty and make lasting friendships with your cohort.

KNOW YOUR PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS

To keep on track, a Doctoral student must meet specific requirements for a student’s program.

Your Program Requirements cover most things a current student needs to know in order to graduate on time.  Our FAQs  answers a few common questions about program requirements. Any outstanding questions can be answered by your program through their website or from your Student Affairs Officer (SAO).

If your program offers a Master’s Degree along the path toward a Doctorate, you’ll be required to initiate a specialized process and meet criteria specific to your program.

NOMINATE YOUR DOCTORAL COMMITTEE

During your second or third year, you’ll begin assembling (nominating) your Doctoral Committee. Your committee is comprised of 4 or more faculty members (3 or more faculty members for professional (non-Ph.D.) doctoral committees) who are experts in your field who can guide you in your research. Some committee members will be on-campus while a few may be located at another academic institution. All committee members will be responsible for reviewing your work periodically, advising you on your direction and independent research, assessing your university oral qualifying exam, and approving your dissertation.

On occasion, your committee will fall out of compliance, in which case you’ll be required to  reconstitute your Doctoral committee . Common reasons include when one of your committee members leaves her or his post at UCLA or when you or a current committee member decides that you’ll benefit more by working with a different faculty member.

ADVANCEMENT TO CANDIDACY

Becoming a doctoral degree candidate is not a given. The first phase of your doctoral program is supervised by a faculty advisor or guidance committee. Your program will administer the written, and in some cases the program’s oral qualifying, exam after you complete courses and other preparatory work recommended or required by your program

Your doctoral committee may also require additional written exams. Only upon satisfactory completion of the written and oral qualifying requirements may you advance to candidacy. A student must also have met language requirements for advancement. This accomplishment generally happens between your second and fourth year.

CONTINUE PROGRESS TOWARD YOUR DOCTORAL DEGREE

With the guidance of your Doctoral Committee, you’ll conduct fieldwork, research, writing, and independent study all the way up through your dissertation.

While you’re completing your degree, keep an eye on your future. Be sure to participate in the great career and professional development events and resources at UCLA.

DEFENDING YOUR DISSERTATION

Some programs require you to present your dissertation to your doctoral committee in a time-honored event called the final oral examination (or final defense). To find out if your program has this requirement, consult your program requirements for the year you were admitted (see KNOW YOUR PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS above).

FILE YOUR DISSERTATION

You will complete an approved doctoral dissertation that demonstrates your ability to perform original, independent research and constitutes a distinct contribution to knowledge in your principal field of study.

CELEBRATE YOUR GRADUATION

Doctoral Degrees are awarded four times a year, and are integrated into a single commencement—called the Doctoral Hooding Ceremony—held once each year at the beginning of June.  UCLA Graduate Commencement for Doctoral Students  is where you’ll find info about tickets, locations, schedule, parking, and dress code (including caps and gowns). For information on commencement ceremonies hosted by various graduate departments and programs, search for your program on this year’s schedule .

Application requirements for all doctoral programs (phd).

All of our doctoral programs are designed to develop outstanding educational researchers who have a deep understanding of the scientific, practical and policy issues they study. All require full-time study, and we promise five years of full-time financial support for every student we admit. Our doctoral programs are small, typically ranging from about 25 to 35 new students a year. The small size of our doctoral cohorts creates big educational advantages for students: the classes are almost always small, students receive individualized attention from their advisors, and they have many opportunities to develop close collegial relationships with fellow students.

It is extremely important to demonstrate in your statement of purpose that your interests converge closely with the current research of faculty who work in the program to which you are applying. Other doctoral applicants will certainly do this, and if you don't, you will forfeit an important competitive advantage to them.

The application fee is $125 , is non-refundable, and must be received by the application deadline.

Application Fee Waivers

Stanford offers three types of application fee waivers for which GSE applicants may apply and be considered:

• School-Based Waiver

Statement of Purpose

A Statement of Purpose is required. Your statement should be typed, single-spaced and should be between one to two pages . Describe succinctly your reasons for applying to the proposed program, your preparation for this field of study, and why our program is a good fit for you, your future career plans, and other aspects of your background as well as interests which may aid the admissions committee in evaluating your aptitude and motivation for graduate study. You may indicate potential faculty mentors as part of your study and research interests. Be sure to keep a copy for your records. What's a Good Statement of Purpose?

A resume or CV  is required of all applicants, depending on which document is most appropriate for your background. There is no page limit for resumes or CVs, though we typically see resumes of one page in length. Please upload your resume or CV in the online application.

Three (3) Letters of Recommendation

Applicants are required to submit three letters of recommendation . In the online application, you will be asked to identify your recommenders and their email addresses. Please notify your recommenders that they will receive an email prompt to submit their recommendation online. You can submit your request for letters of recommendation through the system without submitting the entire online application.  Stanford GSE only accepts online recommendations through the application system ; Stanford GSE cannot accept mailed, emailed or faxed recommendations.

Recommendations should be written by people who have supervised you in an academic, employment, or community service setting. We very strongly recommend that at least one of these letters be from a university professor familiar with your academic work. Your recommendations should directly address your suitability for admission to a graduate program at Stanford GSE.

It is the applicant's responsibility to ensure that all three letters of recommendation are submitted through the system by the application deadline , so please work closely with your recommenders to remind them of the deadline.

College and University Transcripts

Transcripts are required from every college and university you have attended for at least one academic year as a full-time student. When submitting your online application, transcripts should be uploaded to the application as a scanned copy or PDF ; this is sufficient for the application review process. Please refrain from sending a secured PDF/transcript with a digital signature as our system cannot upload these properly. The best way to ensure we receive an upload-able document is for you to print out the secured transcript, scan it, and upload the scanned copy (not to exceed 10MB) as a PDF. 

If you earned a degree at the institution from which you are submitting a transcript, please ensure that the degree conferral date and the degree conferred is clearly visible on the document. If you are currently enrolled in a degree program and will not have earned the respective degree by the time of submitting your GSE application, you should submit your most recent in-progress transcript from your institution.

Only if admitted will we contact you with instructions on sending two copies of your official transcripts to our office. We cannot accept mailed, emailed or faxed copies of your transcripts during the application process. Please note: the instructions for sending transcripts on the online application and on the general Stanford Graduate Admissions Office website differ from this Stanford GSE requirement.

Concerning course work completed in a study abroad program

If the coursework and grades are reflected on the transcript of your home institution, you do not need to submit original transcripts from the study abroad institution.

Concerning foreign institutions

If your institution provides a transcript in a language other than English, we require that you submit a translation of the transcript that is either provided by the institution or a certified translator. Translations must be literal and complete versions of the original records.

If your transcript does not include your degree conferral date and the degree conferred , please submit a scanned copy of your diploma, a conferral statement, or a conferral document in addition to your transcript . If you are currently enrolled in a degree program and will not have earned the respective degree by the time of submitting your GSE application, you should submit your most recent in-progress transcript from your institution.

Stanford University requires the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) from all applicants whose native language is not English. The GSE requires a minimum TOEFL score of 250 for the computer-based test, 600 for the paper-based test or 100 for the internet-based test in order to be considered for admission. The Test of Written English (TWE) portion of the TOEFL is not required. Applicants who have completed a four-year bachelor's degree or a two-year master's program (or its equivalent) in the U.S. or at an institution where English is the main language of instruction are not required to take the TOEFL. For more information on TOEFL requirements, please refer to the Required Exams  page on the main Stanford Graduate Admissions website. You may register for the TOEFL test directly at the ETS website .

TOEFL Dates and Deadlines

PhD applicants who are required to take the TOEFL should plan to take the internet-based TOEFL test and have official TOEFL scores sent electronically to Stanford at institution code 4704 (department code does not matter) no later than November 1 . This will give your official TOEFL scores time to be sent from ETS and be received by our system in time for the December 1 deadline. PhD applicants to Knight-Hennessy Scholars should plan to take the internet-based TOEFL test no later than October 16 so your scores can be received by our system in time for the November 16 KHS GSE deadline. Please note that the TOEFL may be taken no earlier than 18 months prior to the application deadline.

Does Stanford accept tests other than TOEFL?

No. We accept only TOEFL scores; we do not accept IELTS or other test scores.
