The 188-page book, What Matters? and What More?, gains its title from the two iconic essay prompts at Harvard and Stanford.

THOUGHTFUL CRITIQUES OF THE ESSAYS

Stanford can easily boast having the most difficult question posed to MBA applicants in any given year: In 650 words or less, candidates must tell the school what matters most to them and why. Harvard gives applicants ample room to hang themselves, providing no word limit at all, “What more would you like us to know as we consider your candidacy?”

One makes this unusual collection of essays powerful are the thoughtful critiques by the founders of two MBA admissions consulting firms, Jeremy Shinewald of mbaMission and Liza Weale of Gatehouse Admissions. They write overviews of each essay in the book and then tear apart portions by paragraphs to either underline a point or address a weakness. The book became available to download for $60 a pop.

APPLICANTS OPEN UP WITH INTIMATE STORIES THAT SHOW VULNERABILITY

One successful applicant to Harvard Business School begins his essay by conveying a deeply personal story: The time his father was told that he had three months to live, with his only hope being a double lung transplant. had to undergo a lung transplant. His opening line: “Despite all we had been through in recent years, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect when I asked my mother one summer evening in Singapore, ‘What role did I play during those tough times?’”

For this candidate to Stanford Graduate School of Business, the essay provided a chance to creatively engage admission readers about what matters most to him–equality-by cleverly using zip codes as a hook.

These zip codes are just one digit apart, but the difference that digit makes in someone’s life is unfathomable. I realized this on my first day as a high school senior. Leafing through my out-of- date, stained, calculus textbook, I kept picturing the new books that my friend from a neighboring (more affluent) district had. As college acceptances came in, I saw educational inequality’s more lasting effects—my friends from affluent districts that better funded education were headed to prestigious universities, while most of my classmates were only accepted by the local junior college. I was unsettled that this divergence wasn’t the students’ doing, but rather institutionalized by the state’s education system. Since this experience, I realized that the fight for education equality will be won through equal opportunity. Overcoming inequality, to ensure that everyone has a fair shake at success, is what matters most to me.

HOW AN APPLICANT TO BOTH SCHOOLS ALTERED HIS ESSAYS

Yet another candidate, who applied to both Harvard and Stanford, writes about being at but not fully present at his friend’s wedding.

The morning after serving as my friend’s best man, I was waiting for my Uber to the airport and—as usual—scrolling through my phone,” he wrote. “I had taken seemingly hundreds of photos of the event, posting in real time to social media, but had not really looked through them. With growing unease, I noticed people and things that had not registered with me the night before and realized I had been so preoccupied with capturing the occasion on my phone that I had essentially missed the whole thing. I never learned the name of the woman beside me at the reception. I could not recall the wedding cake flavor. I never introduced myself to my friend’s grandfather from Edmonton. I was so mortified that before checking into my flight, I turned my phone off and stuffed it into my carry-on.

The Stanford version of his essay is more compact. In truth, it’s more succinctly written and more satisfying because it is to the point. By stripping away all but the most critical pieces of his narrative, the candidate focuses his essay entirely on his central point: the battle of man versus technology.

Even if you’re not applying to business school, the essays are entertaining and fun to read. Sure, precious few are New Yorker worthy. In fact, many are fairly straightforward tales, simply told. What the successful essays clearly show is that there is no cookie-cutter formula or paint-by-the-numbers approach. Some start bluntly and straightforwardly, without a compelling or even interesting opening. Some meander through different themes. Some betray real personality and passion. Others are frankly boring. If a pattern of any kind could be discerned, it is how genuine the essays read.

The greatest benefit of reading them? For obsessive applicants to two of the very best business schools, they’ll take a lot of pressure off of you because they are quite imperfect.

Outlining is an important skill that will both save you time and improve the quality of your essay. Take time before you write to lay out your paper from beginning to end. Start with your thesis statement and carefully lay out the body paragraphs with a topic sentence, supporting details (including research, quotes, and citations ), and a closing paragraph . Plan your transitions to link paragraphs together. Any amount of outlining can be helpful, but the more effort that you put into outlining at this stage, the easier it will be to write your paper, and the less likely it will be that you get stuck in a tangent that goes nowhere or meander into a point that requires you to change your thesis and revise you whole essay.

Remember to revise and proofread

You should always set aside time to read your work back and to make revisions to make it clearer. The World Bank recently released its Ease of Doing Business Report, 2020.  The indicator measures the performance of countries across 10 different dimensions in the 12-month period ending May 1, 2019.

• According to the report, New Zealand retained its  1 st  position whereas Somalia was ranked at 190 th  spot.
• India’s score improved from 67.23 in the previous year to 71.0 this year.
• India for the third consecutive year was present in the list of 10 economies where the business climate has improved the most.
• Starting a Business- India made starting a business easier by fully integrating multiple application forms into a general incorporation form,
• Dealing with Construction Permits- For example, building a warehouse cost around 4% of the warehouse value as compared to 5.7% in the previous year,
• Trading across Borders - with a single electronic platform- improved electronic submission methods for documents and upgrades to port infrastructure, import and export process became easier, and
• Resolving Insolvency- Recovery rate under resolving insolvency has improved significantly from 26.5% to 71.6%. Also, the time taken for resolving insolvency has also come down significantly from 4.3 years to 1.6 years.
• India continues to maintain its first position among South Asian countries. It was 6 th (in 2014).
• The World Bank will now include Kolkata and Bengaluru , besides Delhi and Mumbai, for preparing ease of doing business report, in order to provide a holistic picture of the business environment of the country.

Ease of Doing Business Report

• The report was introduced in 2003 to provide an assessment of objective measures of business regulations and their enforcement across 190 economies on ten parameters affecting a business through its life cycle.

• It ranks countries on the basis of Distance to Frontier (DTF) score that highlights the gap of an economy with respect to the global best practice. For example, a score of 75 means an economy was 25 percentage points away from the frontier constructed from the best performances across all economies and across time.

Before you start writing, you should make sure you have a clear idea of what you want to say and how you’re going to say it. There are a few key steps you can follow to make sure you’re prepared:

• Understand your assignment: What is the goal of this essay? What is the length and deadline of the assignment? Is there anything you need to clarify with your teacher or professor?
• Define a topic: If you’re allowed to choose your own topic , try to pick something that you already know a bit about and that will hold your interest.
• Do your research: Read  primary and secondary sources and take notes to help you work out your position and angle on the topic. You’ll use these as evidence for your points.
• Come up with a thesis:  The thesis is the central point or argument that you want to make. A clear thesis is essential for a focused essay—you should keep referring back to it as you write.

Once you’ve got a clear idea of what you want to discuss, in what order, and what evidence you’ll use, you’re ready to start writing.

The introduction sets the tone for your essay. It should grab the reader’s interest and inform them of what to expect. The introduction generally comprises 10–20% of the text.

1. Hook your reader

The first sentence of the introduction should pique your reader’s interest and curiosity. This sentence is sometimes called the hook. It might be an intriguing question, a surprising fact, or a bold statement emphasizing the relevance of the topic.

Let’s say we’re writing an essay about the development of Braille (the raised-dot reading and writing system used by visually impaired people). Our hook can make a strong statement about the topic:

The invention of Braille was a major turning point in the history of disability.

2. Provide background on your topic

Next, it’s important to give context that will help your reader understand your argument. This might involve providing background information, giving an overview of important academic work or debates on the topic, and explaining difficult terms. Don’t provide too much detail in the introduction—you can elaborate in the body of your essay.

3. Present the thesis statement

Next, you should formulate your thesis statement— the central argument you’re going to make. The thesis statement provides focus and signals your position on the topic. It is usually one or two sentences long. The thesis statement for our essay on Braille could look like this:

As the first writing system designed for blind people’s needs, Braille was a groundbreaking new accessibility tool. It not only provided practical benefits, but also helped change the cultural status of blindness.

4. Map the structure

In longer essays, you can end the introduction by briefly describing what will be covered in each part of the essay. This guides the reader through your structure and gives a preview of how your argument will develop.

The invention of Braille marked a major turning point in the history of disability. Subsequently, it explores the wide-ranging effects of this invention on blind people’s social and cultural lives.

Write your essay introduction

The body of your essay is where you make arguments supporting your thesis, provide evidence, and develop your ideas. Its purpose is to present, interpret, and analyze the information and sources you have gathered to support your argument.

Length of the body text

The length of the body depends on the type of essay. On average, the body comprises 60–80% of your essay. For a high school essay, this could be just three paragraphs, but for a graduate school essay of 6,000 words, the body could take up 8–10 pages.

Paragraph structure

To give your essay a clear structure , it is important to organize it into paragraphs . Each paragraph should be centered around one main point or idea.

That idea is introduced in a  topic sentence . The topic sentence should generally lead on from the previous paragraph and introduce the point to be made in this paragraph. Transition words can be used to create clear connections between sentences.

After the topic sentence, present evidence such as data, examples, or quotes from relevant sources. Be sure to interpret and explain the evidence, and show how it helps develop your overall argument.

Lack of access to reading and writing put blind people at a serious disadvantage in nineteenth-century society. Text was one of the primary methods through which people engaged with culture, communicated with others, and accessed information; without a well-developed reading system that did not rely on sight, blind people were excluded from social participation (Weygand, 2009). While disabled people in general suffered from discrimination, blindness was widely viewed as the worst disability, and it was commonly believed that blind people were incapable of pursuing a profession or improving themselves through culture (Weygand, 2009). This demonstrates the importance of reading and writing to social status at the time: without access to text, it was considered impossible to fully participate in society. Blind people were excluded from the sighted world, but also entirely dependent on sighted people for information and education.

What not to include in a conclusion

• Using concluding phrases like “To sum up…” or “In conclusion…”

Braille paved the way for dramatic cultural changes in the way blind people were treated and the opportunities available to them. In this sense, Braille helped drive broader social changes in the status of blindness. New accessibility tools provide practical advantages to those who need them, but they can also change the perspectives and attitudes of those who do not.

At my current company, C1, we talk a lot about elevating connected human experiences, and for me, developing and using technology is all about creating better human experiences. But what do we mean by human experiences, and how can we improve them? And how does doing so deliver business value?

Going Beyond EX And CX

The industry has long been focused on employee experience (EX) and customer experience (CX). Improving EX—from access to tools and information to better working environments—enables employees to deliver better CX and generate loyalty. This is all true. However, we need to go a step further and a level deeper.

1. Consider the entire human experience value chain.

Every organization is part of a broader, increasingly complex value chain that extends beyond direct customers to include suppliers, partners and the communities we serve. Recognizing your organization’s role in this value chain enables you to develop a more holistic, end-to-end view of how to better serve your customers.

Consider the impact your organization has on real human beings—from how your components are sourced and data is secured to how you impact the lives of individual customers: a teacher providing parents with the right resources to help a struggling student, a doctor accessing lifesaving information faster or a runner able to buy shoes that offer better support for ankles and knees.

That’s the human experience value statement: ensuring that our thinking about business value, whether in solution development or team building, is focused on the impact on real people—that it accounts for the human spirit.

2. Use human-based CX and EX to add new levels of business value.

Understanding the real human experience of customers is the key to creating products and services that are better suited to their purpose, easier to use and more loved by customers. Solution designers can be more creative and innovate faster because they know what customers are looking for and can see the customer challenges that haven’t been addressed yet. Because designers—and contact center agents—really know what bothers customers, they can focus on reducing friction to ensure their solutions appeal to more people, create a competitive advantage, encourage brand loyalty and generate more revenue.

Many companies, however, still approach innovation from a product-centric perspective, focusing on what features they can add instead of considering the human problems they could be solving. This needs to change, especially in technology companies. The goal isn’t to evolve technology. It’s to solve human problems in a way that's more purposeful, conscientious and thoughtful.

On the employee side, when contact center agents are trained to focus on the human needs of callers, for example, they show more empathy and can better guide even frustrated callers to a better outcome. Better customer outcomes mean agents are far happier in their jobs and more likely to stay in their role for a longer time—saving the company money and creating real business value.

3. Every day, think about what it takes for your company to be truly loved by your customers.

This exercise creates a necessary level of humility. Consider all the companies that you’re a customer of. Do you love them? If so, why? If not, why not? Then, put yourself in the role of a customer of your company. Would you love the experience?

By reshaping your organization into one that's loved by your customers, you’ll generate tremendous passion and energy among your teams. The mission becomes about more than sales quotas, launch dates or paychecks. It’s about making a difference in people’s lives. This creates a virtuous circle of loyalty: Passionate employees deliver exceptional customer experiences, which in turn fuels even greater employee passion.

In a bygone era, N.B.A. teams enforced an unofficial quota on Black players, apparently fearing that a “too Black” team might alienate its white audience. Today, this same league is celebrated as one of the world’s most progressive sports organizations.

Indeed, N.B.A. and W.N.B.A. players have consistently demonstrated over the years that athletes can be drivers of change, helping to create a more just and equal society. The N.B.A., after struggling with racism and injustice, is now a leading advocate of diversity and positions social justice as a core mission . The league has aligned itself with movements like Black Lives Matter, proclaimed the value of freedom of expression and established initiatives such as the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Social Justice Champion Award, honoring players who make significant strides in the fight for social justice.

However, the N.B.A.’s commitment to these values starkly contrasts with its recent partnership with Abu Dhabi, one of the seven emirates that constitute the United Arab Emirates — a nation accused of human rights violations. On Oct. 4 and 6, the Boston Celtics and the Denver Nuggets will play preseason games in Abu Dhabi as part of a broad multiyear deal between the N.B.A. and the emirate dating to 2022, when the first preseason dates there took place. This raises a critical question: Can the N.B.A. maintain its standing as a beacon of its professed ideals while being a partner with such a regime?

Over the past few decades, the N.B.A. has expanded globally , promoting basketball and its brand while cultivating new markets around the world. And while its partnerships with repressive regimes are not limited to the United Arab Emirates — its ties with countries including China and Rwanda have also warranted scrutiny — the upcoming Abu Dhabi games underscore the persistent conflict between the league’s professed values and its engagement with an authoritarian regime.

The United Arab Emirates’ suppression of free speech and political dissent and its harsh treatment of critics have been well documented, although new laws in recent years have provided more protection for women and migrant workers on paper. Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch frequently report on the United Arab Emirates’ lack of judicial transparency, limiting of women’s rights , criminalization of L.G.B.T.Q.+ individuals and exploitation of migrant workers .

Regarding civil liberties and political rights, the United Arab Emirates ranks among the lowest countries globally, with a Freedom House Index score of just 18 out of 100, classifying it as “not free.” Comparatively, Qatar — which came under heavy scrutiny in the lead-up to the 2022 FIFA World Cup for its human rights violations, including exploitation of migrant workers , a lack of L.G.B.T.Q.+ rights and restrictions on women’s rights — scores slightly higher, at 25. Yet while Qatar’s human rights issues sparked significant and justified global criticism , the United Arab Emirates’ equally troubling record has largely flown under the radar, particularly in the context of high-profile sports.

Former President Donald Trump hyped Russia's military record in a rally speech on Tuesday, where he argued again for ending US involvement in the war in Ukraine.

Speaking in Savannah, Georgia, Trump referenced the Soviet Union's role in defeating the Nazis in World War II, as well as how Russia stood up to Napoleon Bonaparte in the 19th Century.

"That's what they do, they fight. And it's not pleasant," he said.

Trump also bemoaned US expenditure on supporting Ukraine, while criticizing President Joe Biden's stance: "Biden says 'we will not leave until we win' — what happens if they win?"

Trump said that the US would be "stuck" in the Ukraine war "unless I'm president," adding: "I'll get it done. I'll get it negotiated, I'll get out. We've gotta get out."

Russia continues to put pressure on a weary Ukraine, and is set to have the second-largest army in the world, with active troops numbering 1.5 million, thanks to a recent decree from President Vladimir Putin.

But analysts have cast doubt on Russia's ability to sustain the same pace of operations in Ukraine beyond 2025, and have long noted that the 2022 full-scale invasion exposed many weaknesses in Russia's military institutions.

In his speech, Trump didn't specify how or what exactly he would negotiate, but his running mate, JD Vance, recently sketched out a plan that would involve significant concessions to Putin.

Vance, who has said in the past that he doesn't "really care" what happens to Ukraine, said the plan would involve freezing the conflict and creating a "demilitarized zone" along the current front line, as well as barring Ukraine from joining NATO.

Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy criticized the plan in an interview with the New Yorker , saying: "That approach would broadcast to the world the following implicit rule: I came, I conquered, now this is mine."

On Tuesday, Trump also made several false claims about US military funding to Ukraine, saying, "We've given them close to $300 billion."

As of early September, the US has given Ukraine just under $56 billion in direct military assistance, according to the State Department . Total assistance to Ukraine and US activities related to the war was $175 billion as of May, according to the Council on Foreign Relations .

Trump also said that Europe had only given Ukraine a "very small fraction" of that. As of September, Europe as a whole has made available around $126 billion in military and other assistance to Ukraine.

Trump also claimed that there was no war in Ukraine while he was in office, saying: "Russia was never going into Ukraine."

He added: "For four years they didn't. When I left, they just went in."

The remarks ignore the fact that Russia's annexation of Crimea and proxy war activity in eastern Ukraine have been going on since 2014, including while Trump was in office.

Communication in business is a highly important aspect (if not the most important one). I agree that different concerns can arise with regard to business communication, for example, language issues or misunderstandings based on culture. I would like to add technology as a possible mediator of communication. As Ivanovski and Gruevski (2014) point out, mediators that allow synchronous communication (chatting, video or audio communication) are more likely to enrich and facilitate the process of negotiations than tools that support asynchronous communication (e-mails, for example). As business communication can be dependent on language barriers, it is preferable to choose such tools that will help both sides overcome these barriers.

Another important aspect of communication is the ability to understand others and to present oneself accordingly. Addams and Allred (2015) point out that business students need to know not only how to present themselves to senior managers or other executives but also how to use one’s language to do it successfully. Thus, I agree that it is essential to research background information about the company or executives, both when communicating with domestic and international stakeholders or colleagues.

As businesses grow, so does the network that includes various business clusters around the world. The influence of culture is unavoidable in this case. Communication with representatives of different cultures can help us understand others and move beyond our perspective on a particular culture. It is suggested to involve students in international communication more often to help them understand how “to cope within the intricate context of international communication” (Goby, 2007, p. 435). Corporations also need to ensure that multicultural components are used in their training to make such communication more effective in real-life situations and challenges.

News Release FHFA Re-Proposes Rule on Suspended Counterparty Program

Washington, D.C. - The Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) today announced that it has revised the Agency’s proposal to amend the Suspended Counterparty Program (SCP).

The SCP regulation requires a regulated entity to report to FHFA if an individual or institution that it does business with has committed certain types of misconduct within the prior three years. It also authorizes FHFA to order its regulated entities to cease doing business or refrain from entering into new business with certain counterparties. Final suspension orders are published on FHFA’s website.

FHFA is publishing this re-proposal after considering issues that commenters had raised about the original proposed rule, issued in July 2023. This includes distinguishing between misconduct that poses material risk to the safety and soundness of the regulated entities from behavior with de minimis impact.

"Amending the Suspended Counterparty Program will help strengthen FHFA’s ability to protect its regulated entities from risks presented by other businesses that engage in misconduct," said Director Sandra L. Thompson. "FHFA has carefully reviewed the feedback from stakeholders in developing this re-proposal, which will better ensure the regulated entities’ safety and soundness so they continue to serve as a reliable and stable source of liquidity for the U.S. housing finance system."

Specifically, the re-proposal would:

• Authorize the suspension of business between a regulated entity and a counterparty whose misconduct resulted in a federal prohibition order or a civil money penalty above a specific threshold; and
• Authorize the suspension of business between a regulated entity and a counterparty that has committed criminal or civil misconduct related to the management or ownership of real property.

FHFA invites comments on the re-proposed rule within 60 days of its publication in the Federal Register.
