Seven Essay Competitions for Undergraduates

essay competition for nigerian students

One may tend to agree that students’ participation in debates ranks higher than in writing contests.

From a personal perspective, essay-writing enthusiasts have dipped over time. Perhaps as a result of its rigorous scrutiny – for both the organizers and writer – unlike the one-off/on-the-spot assessment trads in debates. Or maybe recent advanced checks for AI-generated content.

Essay competitions can be challenging for an average writer. And when you’re left in the blank without a positive response after several trials, you can become discouraged from participating in subsequent ones.

However, with several attempts and opportunities to write on your niches, you can edge to the front row and add to your wins.  Some of these trials can include national or international essays for undergraduates.

Who knows, today may be the perfect day to put on your writing hat and start your entry for the seven essays outlined below.

World Hypertension Day Essay Writing Competition 2024

Like most other important days are commemorated with essay competitions, the upcoming World Hypertension Day is no different and will feature a writing contest. Essay Topic: “Social Media As a Double-Edged Sword”

Essay Prompt:

In an era defined by hashtags, likes, and viral trends, youths find themselves at the crossroads of opportunity and adversity in the digital realm of social media. As a senior secondary school student navigating this dynamic landscape, reflect on the following questions in your essay:

  • How does social media influence the construction of your identity and the expression of your individuality? Explore how social media platforms shape your perceptions of self, aspirations, and sense of belonging within Nigerian society.
  • How do social media platforms impact your relationships with peers, family, and loved ones in a world where friendships are forged through screens and love stories? Reflect on the strengths and limitations of digital connections in fostering meaningful interpersonal bonds.
  • Amid the curated perfection of Instagram feeds and the relentless scroll of TikTok videos, how do you navigate the pressures and pitfalls of social media on your mental health? Share your experiences with comparison culture, cyberbullying, and the quest for validation in the digital age.
  • As agents of change in Nigeria’s evolving socio-political landscape, how does social media empower you to amplify your voice, advocate for social justice, and mobilize your peers for collective action? Consider the role of digital activism in driving positive social change and challenging entrenched power structures.
  • What ethical considerations and digital literacy skills are essential for responsible social media use? Discuss strategies for fostering critical thinking, empathy, and online civility amidst the proliferation of misinformation and online toxicity.

In your essay, draw upon personal anecdotes, scholarly research, and cultural insights to deepen your understanding of the topic. Embrace your unique perspective, challenge prevailing narratives, and envision a future where social media catalyzes positive transformation in Nigerian society.

The purpose of this essay is to raise awareness about the positive and negative impacts of Social Media on Nigerian youths. We want you as you write this essay, to take time to deeply reflect on your points, internalize the material, and be prepared to share your findings with peers. If your essay is selected for an award, you may be invited to the award ceremony where you will present and discuss it.

Participants are encouraged to discuss how fostering inclusive growth can act as a catalyst for driving both competitiveness and stability within economies. Essays should highlight the pivotal role that business dynamism plays in fostering economic development, illustrating how agile and adaptive business practices can lead to sustained growth. Additionally, the importance of building a secure society should be emphasized, considering how societal security underpins economic stability and development.

Moreover, the essays should examine how innovation and digital transformation can be ignited to drive progress. This includes exploring the potential of new technologies and innovative practices to revolutionize industries and contribute to economic resilience. Participants should also underscore the necessity of collaboration among various stakeholders—such as governments, businesses, and civil society—in achieving sustainable and equitable progress. The goal is to illustrate that only through cooperative efforts can long-term growth, competitiveness, and stability be realized in a manner that benefits all segments of society.

This competition offers a platform for participants to present well-rounded perspectives on these critical issues, encouraging them to think critically and propose actionable solutions that promote holistic and inclusive development. Our 2024-25 Student Contest Calendar

Ten challenges that invite teenagers to engage, experiment, reflect and create — via writing, photography, audio, video and more.

Six photos including of a boy wearing an animal headdress, two football players, two boys doing planks, a group of girls dancing with their arms around one another, a girl drinking out of a tumbler, a group of children skipping rocks.

By The Learning Network

Our annual Contest Calendar is probably the single most powerful thing we publish all year. Teachers tell us they plan their classes around our challenges, and tens of thousands of teenagers around the globe participate by creating narratives, reviews, videos, opinion pieces, podcasts, illustrations, photo essays and more.

For us, these contests are an honor and a joy to host. We love learning from young people — about what moves them and makes them mad, what intrigues and confuses and delights and defines them.

This year, we are bringing back some recent and longtime favorites, as well as introducing a few new challenges.

To begin, we have two options this fall in response to the U.S. election, though students around the globe are welcome. In September, we open with a series of special forums that invite teenagers to have thoughtful conversations about their civic and political identities, values and beliefs. Then, if they choose, they can work alone or with others to make something in response — whether in writing, video, audio or visual art. (Students can participate in one or both challenges, and we have a related invitation for educators .)

In the spring, we’re offering “My List,” a twist on our long-running review contest. This time, students can choose any collection of three to five works of art or culture to group in some way and then tell us why we should — or shouldn’t — check them out.

We’ll be posting the full rules and guidelines for each contest here when it opens. but for now you can look at the related resources we’ve provided, as well as last year’s rules, which will largely remain the same for our returning contests.
