My parents would look on with a sigh while I hotly defended Captain Kirk over Spock, or championed Oreos as superior to Chips Ahoy (my brother’s favorite). I was proud of my ability to drum up counterattacks and rebuttals to my family’s arguments. My interest only grew after I joined the debate club and started getting into politics during the recent presidential election. My love for debate morphed into a passion for logic, wordplay, and spin tactics.

As a debate and politics aficionado, I naturally gravitated towards Montclair State’s political science major because of its multifaceted approach to the subject. I can see myself engaging with the works of Aristotle and Plato in Essentials of Political Thought , and then launching myself into the future in classes like Politics of Science Fiction .

Outside of the classroom, I hope to join The Political Science Club, which will allow me to promote political awareness and involvement on campus. I’m especially interested in helping host debates and talks by those in the field on important issues such as gun control and climate change.

The former response is vague, and the resource mentioned can be found at almost any school. This latter response, written after doing research on the school website, abounds with detail and crafts a compelling narrative. This response gives specific information about the applicant’s personal interests and the school’s unique opportunities, while creating imagery that makes the essay more engaging.

Often, when students are faced with the “Why School” prompt, they forget to mention potential extracurriculars and the social aspect of college. College isn’t only about academics, but also your activities outside of the classroom. Look into extracurriculars or clubs that you would like to join, using your current interests as a reference. Doing this will illustrate genuine interest in Montclair’s extracurricular offerings.

For instance, you could say something along the lines of:

“Ever since I remember, I have loved to dance – growing up, I loved making my siblings laugh with zany new moves set to our favorite Justin Bieber songs. In high school, I started an initiative called Shake it Up Seniors, where my peers and I would volunteer to teach dance classes at the senior center. I look forward to joining Complexions at MSU because I love making people smile and spreading the love of dance everywhere I go. I can’t wait to perform at halftime during football games to jazz up my fellow Hawks!”

This response integrates the student’s personal past experience with potential future opportunities at Montclair State. While many schools have a dance team, this one is specific to MSU.

This prompt also asks you to provide examples of situations that may have had an impact, either positively or negatively, on your academic record. You should use this space to describe any circumstances that may have impacted your education. If you feel that the parameters apply to you, you can explain any topic that was not addressed in the other parts of your application. Since this part of the essay will likely have a more serious tone, it might be better to be straight and to the point in this part, rather than painting a picture with vivid imagery as you would in other parts of this essay or application.

A potential response might sound something like this: “In my first year of high school, my sister was diagnosed with leukemia, and it profoundly affected me both emotionally and academically. My main focus was helping her get better in any way I could, and I often prioritized her treatment over my studies. For that reason, there is a significant decline in my grades in the second trimester of that year.” 

Another response might sound like this: “Because my family owns a small gift shop, I am often called on to help by translating for my parents as they do not speak English very well. I also clean up around the shop and take care of my siblings when both of my parents are working. I was unable to join as many extracurriculars as my peers, as a significant portion of my time went towards helping ensure the family shop was running smoothly.”

I'm applying to Montclair State as a transfer student (Comp Sci), and I need help with the personal statement. The prompt is "Please provide a brief description of your educational goals. Be sure to explain any discrepancies that may be reflected on your transcript.". What am I supposed to write? what format should it be written in (i.e. essay format? article? )? How long should it be? The reason I'm asking is b/c I'm from a unusual background, and I've never really written a personal statement before.

I guess what I'm really asking is: what is MSU looking for in a personal statement? Surely they already know alot about you, and your grades..

I am currently seeking admission to the history program at Montclair State University. As a prospective student, I believe Montclair to be the perfect fit for my educational goals. Earlier this year, I attended an open house at the university; to say I was impressed would be an understatement. At first glance, the campus seemed to be the perfect mix of traditional and unique. Throughout my visit I found myself fascinated with the campus's mix of old Spanish Mission style and modern conveniences. Aesthetics aside, what really drew me in was the enthusiasm that radiated from the students I encountered. On my tour I had the opportunity to speak with several members of the faculty, and each one definitely made a positive impact on me. One experience that really struck home for me came when the Dean of Students and President of the Student Government Association happened to cross our tour's path and made a point of coming over and introducing themselves to us. Their spirited introductions made it obvious that they put their hearts into their work. That experience made me feel like Montclair State was a community I wanted to be a part of.

Application Review

Selecting a first and second choice program.

We strongly recommend that students select first and second choice academic programs that are in different colleges. For example, Criminology and Communication are both in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. Programs within the same college often have similar admissions criteria. If we determine you’re not competitive for your first choice, you’ll be reviewed for your second choice. View a full list of academic programs by college here .

Math Preparation for First-Year Applicants

The vast majority of our STEM and business majors require students to complete at least one semester of calculus. When reviewing applicants for those programs, we are expecting students to have taken math through precalculus as a minimum in high school.   

Test Score Policy for 2025 Applicants

First-year students applying for fall 2025 with a weighted GPA of 2.8 or above (a B- average) are not required to submit SAT or ACT scores. You will have the option to indicate on your Common App or Coalition on Scoir application if you would like your scores used in our review process. In these cases, test scores will only be used to enhance your application. Not submitting scores will not adversely affect your application in any way. 

First-year students applying with a weighted GPA below 2.8 will be required to submit an SAT or ACT score. Learn more about test score consideration here .

Change to Minimum Course Requirements

The UNC System updated minimum course requirements for students applying for admission starting in the fall of 2024.  High school students are no longer required to have completed two years of a world language. While taking a world language is no longer an admissions requirement, we strongly encourage students to continue to take two years of a world language in high school. For many students, completing two years of a world language in high school will help them meet foreign language proficiency .

Academic offerings and updates for 2025 applicants.

  • Music Technology ( First-Year Students Only ) – The new undergraduate major in Music Technology is an interdisciplinary program that provides a foundation of theoretical and practical skills in music and electrical and computer engineering to prepare students to design, develop and implement advanced music technologies. In addition to a variety of supporting courses, it has three primary components: a musicianship core;  an engineering core; and a music technology core (18 credit hours). All students will complete a two-semester senior design project. Applicants will be required to submit no more than five samples of work and an essay by the application deadline – November 1 for Early Action applicants or January 15 for those applying regular decision.
  • First Year Program Updates – First-year programs provide incoming students with interests in broad multi-disciplinary areas, like engineering, the environment and life sciences, with academic support and interdisciplinary opportunities. For majors including Biological Sciences, Biology, Zoology, Genetics and Microbiology, incoming students can choose one of two first-year programs based on their interests. The Life Sciences First Year (LSFY) program provides a common curriculum for students to explore life science majors before committing to one discipline. The Environmental First Year (ENVFY) program provides a broad introduction to interdisciplinary problem-solving related to grand challenges in the environment and sustainability. Consider your interests (e.g. if you are interested in animals and saving the environment, you might consider ENVFY) and the best “fit” for you (e.g. if you are interested in lab research and studying organisms to learn more about life, you might consider LSFY) when deciding between the two programs.

Optional Community Disruption Short Answer Question

Community disruptions such as COVID-19 and natural disasters can have deep and long-lasting impacts. If you need it, there is space on the application to describe those impacts. We care about the effects on your health and well-being, safety, family circumstances, future plans and education, including access to reliable technology and quiet study spaces.

School Counselors will also be given the opportunity to indicate how the school environment was impacted by disruptions such as COVID-19 and to explain any changes to the school grading scale or other ways students may have been impacted.

University Honors Program Consideration

As you apply to NC State, you are invited to apply to the University Honors Program (UHP). The program enriches the educational experience of a group of academically motivated and intellectually curious students from all communities, providing them with a platform for achieving their unique potential.   • First-Year Applicants: As a part of the consideration process, the essay you submit through the Common App or Coalition on Scoir will be reviewed. You will also be asked to respond to the prompt below in no more than 600 words. As you write your response, you are encouraged to include any settings that have been part of your high school or secondary school journey – school, community, work, family, etc. Tell us about an event, realization, or project where your curiosity inspired you to take action. What initially sparked your interest, how did you pursue further understanding, and what specific actions did you take as a result?

List questions

For the list question that follows, there is a 100 word maximum. please refer to the below guidance when answering this question:, your response should be a list of items separated by commas or semicolons., items do not have to be numbered or in any specific order., it is not necessary to italicize or underline titles of books or other publications., no author names, subtitles or explanatory remarks are needed., list a selection of texts, resources and outlets that have contributed to your intellectual development outside of academic courses, including but not limited to books, journals, websites, podcasts, essays, plays, presentations, videos, museums and other content that you enjoy.  (100 words or fewer).

How do you pursue intellectual development outside of the classroom? You’ll need to be careful to avoid self-aggrandizing or pandering choices. Don’t top your list with 1984 unless you genuinely picked it up of your own accord, read it from start to finish, and meditated on Orwell’s intentions (while staring out the window, jaw agape). Think of not just the most recent media you’ve consumed, but also the old classics you can’t help revisiting (anything by Jenny Han, the podcast you binged in two weeks, the film you saw in theaters three times). Play with the sequencing here: how would you set these up in your library? Chronologically? Alphabetically? Thematically? Maybe you can make an entertaining leap from the sublime to the ridiculous by placing a heart-wrenching play alongside a goofy satire. Have fun with it! After all, this list is, at its core, about what you consume for the pleasure of it.

Short answer questions

For the four short answer questions, please respond in 150 words or fewer., a hallmark of the columbia experience is being able to learn and thrive in an equitable and inclusive community with a wide range of perspectives. tell us about an aspect of your own perspective, viewpoint or lived experience that is important to you, and describe how it has shaped the way you would learn from and contribute to columbia’s diverse and collaborative community. (150 words or fewer).

Ah, the infamous “community” essay. Many schools ask students about their communities because they want to know how you relate to the people around you, forge connections, and commune with your peers. In this particular instance, the question emphasizes equity, inclusivity, diversity, and collaboration. What do these words mean to you and how do they relate to your perspective or lived experience? Maybe you’re very involved in a progressive church youth group that celebrates its members differences, including trans and nonbinary members. Perhaps the friends you made at the skatepark have introduced you to a new culture and mindset of “try and try again” that you love. Maybe there are different languages spoken by the volunteers in your community garden, and now you know how to say “basil” in four different dialects (BTW in Italian it’s “ basilico ,” #funfact). How do you see equity, inclusivity, diversity, and collaboration play out in your community? And, looking forward, how would you keep those values alive at Columbia next fall?

In college/university, students are often challenged in ways that they could not predict or anticipate. It is important to us, therefore, to understand an applicant’s ability to navigate through adversity. Please describe a barrier or obstacle you have faced and discuss the personal qualities, skills or insights you have developed as a result. (150 words or fewer)

This prompt is incredibly similar to the Common App’s Prompt #2, which asks applicants to recount a time when they faced a challenge, setback, or failure. Our advice is similar: isolate an incident of trial in your life and illustrate how you learned from it. Writing about a difficult time in your life requires both vulnerability and perspective. Instead of focusing on the barrier or obstacle you were up against, spend most of the words at your disposal on how you rose to the occasion to overcome the challenge at hand. This is your opportunity to show admissions that you are a developing, maturing young adult with resilience and work ethic. As you zero in on a key moment, ask yourself the following questions: What healthy coping mechanisms or communication skills did you develop? Who, if applicable, did you choose to lean on and why? What did you learn about yourself? How will you approach difficult situations moving forward? Be honest and open, and we’re sure admissions will be impressed.

This brief assignment is Columbia’s version of the classic Why Essay , and the key to every good Why Essay is solid, specific research. Spend some quality time with the Columbia website or, if you can, on a campus tour. Ask questions, take notes, and dig to find specific people, organizations, and experiences that excite you. Don’t dig too deep into majors or classes just yet; you’ll have an opportunity to write about your academic interest in a little bit, so for now, focus on the Columbia experience as a whole. Once you have some notes on the page, try to weave together a story that pairs your interests with Columbia’s offerings. Reveal new information about yourself while also showing that you’ve done your homework.

What attracts you to your preferred areas of study at Columbia College or Columbia Engineering? (150 words or fewer)

This prompt gives you a chance to geek out about your intended area(s) of study. Whether you’re hoping to study at Columbia College or Columbia Engineering, the assignment is the same: offer admissions insight into your academic interests and pursuits. Whether your goals are intellectual, professional, or somewhere in between, your reasoning should be grounded in what Columbia has to offer. 150 words isn’t a lot of space, but that doesn’t mean you can’t provide a detailed response. Get ambitious and aim to answer these two key questions: What intrigues or excites you about your intended major? And why is Columbia the ideal place for you to study it? Hannah Kendall Writes Music With a Vocabulary of Her Own

This composer’s latest work, for Lincoln Center, is in conversation with Robert Schumann’s music and mental health struggles.

“Violent congestion, inexpressible terror, failure of breath, momentary unconsciousness — these overtake me in quick succession, though I am better than I was,” the composer Robert Schumann wrote in a letter to his mother in 1833. He was 23, and the recent deaths of his older brother and sister-in-law surely cast a pall on his state of mind. “If you had any notion of the lethargy into which melancholia has brought me,” he continued, “you would forgive my not writing.”

Hannah Kendall, a prominent young British composer based in New York, was struck by that passage a little more than a year ago, while reading Schumann’s letters , which provide glimpses of a decades-long struggle with mental illness, diagnosed during his life as exhaustion, and posthumously as schizophrenia or bipolar disorder .

“It felt as though there was a very direct, personal connection to his state at the time, which I found particularly fascinating as a composer,” Kendall, 40, said in a recent interview at Lincoln Center — where her new work, “He stretches out the north over the void and hangs the earth on nothing,” will premiere on Aug. 9. The Festival Orchestra of Lincoln Center will play Kendall’s piece on a program that also includes Schumann’s Second Symphony.

What it takes to be an artist today, Kendall explained, is a regular topic of discussion among her circle of friends and peers. “Our well-being, mental and physical, is something that crops up on a daily basis,” she said. Some composers, like Julia Adolphe , Nico Muhly and Aaron Helgeson , have begun to air mental-health concerns and struggles in public, in blog posts and on podcasts.

Kendall was urged to read Schumann’s letters by a longtime friend, the conductor Jonathon Heyward , the music director of the Festival Orchestra, who admittedly had an ulterior motive. For his first summer with the ensemble, he had her commissioned to write a piece for a concert that would also feature Schumann. He envisioned Kendall responding to not only Schumann’s music, but also issues of mental health and this moment when performing arts organizations are still struggling to lure back audiences lost during the pandemic.

The coming program, which also includes two works by Bach, is surrounded by contextual offerings. “ Ghost Variations ,” an augmented-reality installation piece in the lobby at David Geffen Hall, explores how Schumann found solace in Bach’s music. And a preconcert discussion will address the question “ Can music express mental health? ”

Fixed Route Shuttle Operations

Our Fixed Route Shuttles operate Monday – Friday, 6 a.m.- 1 a.m., with buses running every 8-15 minutes on average. On weekends, Fixed Route service is available from 8 a.m. – 1 a.m. Additionally, we offer special routes like the Wednesday ShopRite of Little Falls Shuttle and the Saturday Shopper Shuttle to Clifton Commons.

On Demand Shuttle Operations

We are excited to announce the launch of a new transportation initiative, the “Night Hawk” On-Demand bus service, which will be available to you starting at the beginning of the Fall 2024 semester. This service represents the latest step in our efforts to harness technology to enhance transportation at Montclair State University. Operating Tuesday – Saturday, 10 p.m. – 2 a.m. Night Hawk offers a convenient transportation option during late hours. It covers all the Montclair campus bus stops. Students can request a ride via the TripShot app , either scheduling in advance or on-demand, with real-time bus tracking to ensure minimal wait times. This service is free for all students with a montclair.edu email address, providing a flexible and accessible transportation option during the evening hours.
