AN EMPIRICAL STUDY ON THE EFFECTIVENESS OF ROLE-PLAY ON LEARNING OUTCOMES AMONG UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS

Profile image of Dr Muralidhar L B

In a traditional classroom, the majority of the time is spent listening to and watching the professors lecture. Assignments are completed by each student alone, and collaboration is discouraged. With learner-centered teaching strategies, the students become the centre of attention rather than the teacher. The traditional teacher-centered approach to instruction has repeatedly been shown to be inferior to learner-centered methods. This conclusion holds true regardless of whether the assessed outcome is short-term mastery, long-term retention, or depth of understanding of course material, acquisition of critical thinking or creative problem-solving skills, development of positive attitudes towards the subject being taught, or degree of knowledge and skill self-confidence. Role-playing is a learnercentered method that enables students to investigate real-world scenarios by managing interactions with others to gain experiences and test out various tactics in a safe setting. Undergraduate students are being used in the current study to examine their perspectives of how role-playing affects learning outcomes. The study was done with the 155 respondents by collecting the primary and secondary data. Primary data collected to understand the study of objectives like the influence on the personality development of the students and the influence of the inbuilt feature of role-play towards the learning process. Regression, Regression Coefficient and Anova used to analyze the research objective. The research objective analysis revealed that role play influences the personality development process of the students. It was understood that sometimes role-play is stressful, complex, controversial, short, and spontaneous and would lead to negative learning experiences.

One tertiary institution sought to research the perceptions that tertiary students have of role-plays as a means of learning. Role-plays were used across a range of disciplines at that institution including: teacher training, business and chemistry. Each of these disciplines used a role-play in their classes and then collected opinions from the students on the usefulness of the activity. It was discovered that students value role-plays as a means to challenge preconceived ideas, encourage creative thinking, assist students in applying theory to practice, make lessons fun and provide active learning experiences that increase student learning and engagement.

There has been significant discussion on the use of role-play activities. Proponents of role-play believe that the activity provides learners with opportunities to communicate freely and spontaneously in different situations. However, researchers have also identified issues that may jeopardize the effectiveness of role-plays. Despite the debate, few studies have focused on the students' point of view. The current qualitative study investigated ESL students' perceptions of role-play activities drawing on observations, questionnaires, and interviews. The results showed that the participants recognized several benefits (e.g., improving oral proficiency, acquiring vocabulary, and rehearsing for real-life communication) while also acknowledging some limitations such as artificiality and lack of vocabulary and ideas.

MUMBAI: said, “Traveling has always been my escape from the hustle and bustle of life. Recently, I took a short trip to Lonavala with my friends to celebrate my birthday, and it was just the perfect getaway. The serene hills, misty mornings, and the cool breeze made me feel so refreshed. Whether it's a big vacation or a small weekend trip, I believe every journey has its own charm. Lonavala’s beauty reminded me of how important it is to pause, step away from our busy schedules, and soak in the wonders of nature. Traveling allows us to rediscover ourselves and create memories that stay with us forever. On World Tourism Day, I encourage everyone to take that much-needed break and explore new places, because each trip is a celebration of life itself.”
