The first step to apply to Starbucks is to create a profile on its Careers page, but it’s strongly recommended that you also include a resume (known as a CV in many countries). It should be one page only, consisting of five components:

  • Header with contact info
  • Summary/profile
  • Employment history

The header is the space at the top of the page where you list your name, occupation, address, phone number, email and perhaps your LinkedIn profile. We’ll discuss the others below, but here is some advice that comes directly from Starbucks : 

  • The summary should focus on “the key skills you bring to the new role.”
  • Employment history should include “relevant experience from the last 10 years, starting with most recent.”
  • You need to “showcase your professional accomplishments” and “highlight how you’ve added value in your previous roles.”
  • You need to review the job listing closely and “ensure your experience reflects the themes and requirements of the role.”

Resume format involves questions of structure, design and layout. Your resume needs to read right, but it also needs to look good. You want to use a professional font, adequate margins , a balanced layout and an appropriate amount of white space.  

Per Starbucks’ instructions above, use the reverse chronological format for your job history, listing your last employer first and first employer last. 

Summary resume example

The resume summary, also known as a profile, personal statement or objective, is your opportunity to describe your qualifications for the job you’re seeking in your own words. 

Make this as compelling as possible, focusing on your strengths, whether that’s your experience, education, training, skills or passions.

Be mindful of Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS), which are software programs that employers use to search resumes for critical keywords they should contain. It’s important that your resume contain the actual words describing the qualifications that employers mention in their job listings. 

If your resume contains none of the keywords that the Starbucks ATS system is looking for, your resume may be rejected automatically. This is why it’s important to read the listings for open positions closely and try to make your resume reflect the requirements as much as possible.

Starbucks employs people as young as 16, so you don’t necessarily need even a high school diploma to work there. But your education still needs to be mentioned on your resume.
