Solo movie review: Four Dulquer Salmaans and some thoughtful storytelling overshadow a needless contrivance

Solo movie review: Four Dulquer Salmaans and some thoughtful storytelling overshadow a needless contrivance

(Note: This is a review of the Malayalam version of Solo. The film has been simultaneously made in Tamil.)

Dulquer Salmaan is as hot as I imagine the planet Mercury must be. Now imagine someone bringing Mercury down to earth, cloning it to generate four blazing balls of fire and packing them into a single film. That is what writer-director Bejoy Nambiar has done in his new release Solo , an anthology of short stories written jointly by Nambiar and Dhanya Suresh, with DQ — as he is popularly known — playing the protagonist in each.

Too hot to handle? Jokes (meaning, that hormonally charged first paragraph) aside, actually not. Nambiar handles the central artiste in his cast as any director should treat a gifted performer: with respect but not reverence. Too many filmmakers ruin potentially good projects by behaving like fanboys rather than helmsmen. In Nambiar’s hands though, Solo is not star-struck, not designed simply to show off a young superstar’s beauty and talent, not painfully conscious of his presence or overwhelmed by it. Salmaan does not overshadow all else here. He is what he is and ought to be: an actor playing a part… well, four parts.

First, he is Shekhar, a musician with a speech impairment and an interfering family, in love with a dancer who is blind. Next, he is Dr Trilok Menon who rescues an accident victim on a lonely road. Then comes Shiva, a violent gangster who is protective towards his little brother and roughs up the mother of his child. And Lieutenant Rudra Ramachandran of the finale is determined to marry the woman he loves despite opposition from her family, including her brigadier father who could destroy his career as revenge.

Each short is presented as a representation of one of the elements — Water, Wind, Fire, Earth; each character as a representation of that element as manifest in Lord Shiva, and bearing one of the beloved deity’s many names.

As standalone shorts, they work well. Each segment is well-rounded for the most part. There is a surprise in each one, but no twist feels contrived. When the realisation settles in, by the third short a viewer is waiting for an unexpected turn of events, but the expectation is not a distraction and does not eclipse everything else that is going on, nor is any revelation predictable.

DQ is excellent throughout, pulling off sensitivity, innocence, cruelty and heartbreak without the effort being apparent. Each of his characters is styled distinctively (Shekhar, for instance, has long hair), but they are distinguishable from each other even without that because of the actor’s subtly changing body language.

The supporting players are just as good, and include stars in their own right. Veterans Suhasini Maniratnam and Nassar who play Rudra’s parents live up to their reputations. Of the young lot, Sai Dhansika stands out for her performance as Shekhar’s lover Radhika and because she too is a Mercury-level knockout. Anson Paul delivers a neatly nuanced performance as Justin, a man wracked with guilt at a choice he once made against the dictates of his conscience, as does Sruthi Hariharan who displays her substantial range in travelling from nagger to victim to sexual being to conflicted woman hopelessly in love within the span of the few minutes available to her.

The only artiste constrained by this film’s grandeur is Arthi Venkatesh playing an accident victim called Ayesha in Trilok and Justin’s short. The camerawork in this portion is painfully overt in its effort to present her as a cute darling sort, as if that was necessary to convince us that her death would be a huge loss to those who loved her. There is also something slightly discomfiting about the focus on her body, her bare skin and her curves, before and after a tragedy befalls her. If the portrayal of Ayesha is one of the film’s lacunae, the fault lies not with Venkatesh but with the cinematography and direction in the few seconds that she is on screen.

This is the only place where Solo becomes self-conscious right in the middle of a narrative. Sadly, it detracts from the natural flow of this section.

The other moments of self-consciousness come in the unconvincing effort to connect Lord Shiva and the elements to Shekhar, Trilok, Shiva and Rudra, and to weave the figure four into the fabric of their lives.

The religio-mythological referencing in Solo is strained and ineffective. It is also, if you think about it, unnecessary. Even without the great Destroyer of the Hindu Holy Trinity, there are common threads running through Solo ’s segments: aloneness (which is perhaps why the film is titled thus), loss and betrayal — the physical loss of a loved one, the emotional loss that comes with betrayal by a loved one. These are thoughtful stories in which the audience must grapple with the questions thrown our way without answers being obviously spoonfed to us.

What, for instance, is the definition of human goodness? If a man hesitated over a monumentally heartless action and repented for it all his life, is he evil? Who is the better person: the gun-toting, trigger-happy hooligan camouflaging the great pain he endured in his childhood, or the seemingly polished fellow with a genuine grievance, calmly and systematically executing a plan of revenge? A character describes another as “a good man…not good enough”. Where does human frailty end and “good enough” begin?

These questions, ironically, were “good enough” to make Solo a wholesome film without the intellectual pretensions that rob it of some of its warmth.

While I do not have any favourite in this quartet, I do have a least favourite one, which I cannot reveal because it would involve a spoiler. When you see Solo you will figure out which part I am referring to here. When a man cheats on his wife, and his son asks, “Could you not find any other woman (to have an affair with)?” the Dad has the audacity to say, “I could ask you the same thing.” Actually, he would not be justified in doing so (when you know the particulars, you might agree), and while I can certainly believe that there could be such traitorous fathers out there who might ask their sons such questions, it is hard to buy this particular son’s silence in response to his father’s impertinence, considering the overall writing of his character.

Also defying credulity elsewhere is Rudra’s army boss (Dino Morea) actively prodding him to indulge in silly, typical-Indian-commercial-film-climax-type behaviour.

Solo has a smattering of dialogues in Hindi and Tamil. While for the most part, it is okay not to subtitle them since it can be argued that we are hearing them from the standpoint of characters who don’t understand these languages, this reasoning does not apply to Shiva’s story where some of the Tamil lines are pivotal to the understanding of the main antagonist’s motivations. It would have made sense to embed Malayalam subs here for the benefit of Solo ’s primary audience unless it is being assumed that every Malayali knows Tamil.

Like all Nambiar’s films so far, this one too is a visual treat featuring well-used music. Striking illustrations introduce each section. The cinematography is luscious, never more so than in the way it captures those heavily wooded country roads in Trilok’s saga. The greenery in those scenes is so delicious that you could make a meal of it. Each segment too gets a well-defined look without being too literal in the representation of jalam , vaayu , agni and bhoomi .

In each of Nambiar’s features so far, his penchant for stylised storytelling has been his strength and his Achilles heel. I still get goosebumps remembering the splendid overlaying of the song ‘ Khoya Khoya Chand’ over two parallel tracks of extreme chaos in Shaitan (2011). Nambiar always has an interesting point to make, but too often in his works, style has subtracted from soul. Solo has style and soul. The reason why the film pulls through as a whole despite the needless contrivance used to link its individual parts is because the Shiva reference precedes each one, after which the stories themselves are immersive enough and the cast engaging enough for the artifice to be forgotten till it rolls around once again before the next one. This amounts to liking the film not for what the maker meant it to be, but in spite of his intentions. So be it. Solo is not a great film, but it is “good enough”.

Solo Movie Review

(Note: This is the Tamil review of Solo)

First things first, just how underrated is Bejoy Nambiar? He made his debut with Shaitan. Followed by David and Wazir that were meant for a certain kind of audience. But Bejoy Nambiar has always tried to transcend the boundaries with his writing. Which is all the more reason to like Solo, an anthology that encompasses elements of water, wind, fire and earth.

For every story in Solo, the colour patterns that are used are symbolic, add the necessary thematic effect. Bejoy Nambiar's screenplay eschews mainstream storytelling. In the sense that each story has its own timeframe with very little inventiveness.

Solo is modelled on Lord Shiva's four different avatars -- Shekhar, Trilok, Shiva and Rudra. It begins with Shekhar's story, a college rogue, with a stutter, who falls for Radhika (Sai Dhansika). We later discover that Radhika is blind. The reason they fall in love is simple. But what if two physically challenged people decide to have a baby? What if their fears about the baby come true? How would Shekhar react if he finds out that the baby has a stutter as well? Or what if the baby inherits Radhika's disability? Shekhar's story is probably the weakest among others. Given that Shekhar's story is about the 'guilt' of a man, Nambiar had enough potential to explore more. But he didn't. And it's hard to empathise with either of the two.

Trilok's story starts on a rather confusing note. That of a woman battling for life. It's a low-key setup in a remote place in Kodaikanal, where a couple is celebrating their honeymoon after two years. Even here, we see a man's guilt. Compared to the earlier story, Trilok's arc is oddly satisfying. On the other hand, Shiva gets a blast of an entry scene. It also makes you wonder how pompous the song Manguyile from Karagattakaran is. Consider Vincent Pepe's Illamai Itho entry from Angamaly Diaries and you'd understand it better.

Shiva, a gangster, is seeking blood. In Nambiar's language, the fire keeps burning inside him. He has two women in his life; Rukku (Sruthi Hariharan) and her baby girl. Dulquer is fantastic when he meets his mother.

One of the fascinating scenes in Solo is when Shiva's brother seeks comfort in a stranger. It tears us apart. That's how a repressed boy would react. It gets better later, when we get a Udaan-styled ending. In Solo, the World of Shiva is perhaps the best of the lot. The story has a heart and lot of unexplored subtexts that could well be developed as a separate film. Which also brings us to the final story of Rudra, an aspiring army officer.

Rudra's premise is after earth. As you know, it symbolises bruteness. In one scene, a man calls Rudra an "animal". That's exactly how he is. For what seemed like the story of an armyman, turns out to be a light-hearted comedy with a shocking yet delightful climax. Just watch out for Suhasini's revelation in the end. To keep with Trilok, these aren't good enough.

Is there an actor like Dulquer Salmaan among the younger generation, who could internalise a dark, gutsy character like Shiva and as well play a romantic Rudra? We doubt.

If not anything, Solo is a gorgeous-looking film. It has its definitive colour and some cosy moments. That said, Bejoy Nambiar is a hardcore Tamil cinema fan. It's very obvious since Solo has traces of Kamal Haasan, Mani Ratnam and K Balachander's works. Take the disability portions from Uyarnthavargal and you get Shekhar's story. Remove the revenge angle from Trilok's story, you have Manmadhan Ambu. Consider Inba Sekaran from Aayutha Ezhuthu, you have Shiva. Nambiar's light-hearted climax for Rudra's story that left the theatre in splits; is from Apoorva Raagangal. Yes, these stories aren't great and it's definitely not Island City.

Maybe the problem is not with Solo but Bejoy Nambiar. Maybe the film should have been simpler in terms of its screenplay. Maybe it has to do with Tamil dialogues that are a big let down. Maybe there's something lost in the emotional quotient. Maybe Solo has a lot of unexplored 'grey' areas. For instance, a gangster repeatedly asks the henchman to sing an MGR song, but why? How terrific would Solo have been, had Nambiar addressed all these maybes?

Solo Movie Review

Language: Malayalam/Tamil

Director: Bejoy Nambiar

Cast: Dulquer Salmaan, Dhansika, Ann Augustine, Prakash Belawadi, Qaushiq Mukherjee, Manoj K Jayan, Sai Tamhankar, Sruthi Hariharan, Neha Sharma

Bejoy Nambiar's Solo is an anthology of four shorts, anchored by Dulquer Salmaan in four flavours (had the actor been a newcomer, this would have been a heck of a showreel). There are other commonalities. Each segment spans four years. Each one features Dulquer as a character named after Shiva. Each one opens with a shot of the elements (rain in the first episode, wind ruffling a cyclist's top in the second, etc.). Each one is capped by twist, and despite the tragedies in the narratives, each segment ends with a happy image. Each story features an accident (sometimes literal, sometimes an accidentally revealed relationship), and each one is deepened by children, either unborn or, well, accidentally born. These are Nambiar's building blocks.

His constructions are wobbly. The first episode is the most underwhelming. Dulquer plays Shekhar, a man with a "manufacturing defect" – he stammers. He gets to know that Radhika (Dhansika), who's blind, likes him. We hardly feel the depth of this relationship, because the story keeps cutting back and forth in time (another constant across the four segments) – we never stay long enough in a moment to savour it, to understand how it colours the overall picture. Except once – when Radhika's story about her father echoes the segment's final image. But even here, we don't feel the wallop. This, then, is the recurring factor that binds all segments: the stories are hugely emotional, but we remain distant, less involved than we should be.

Next up, the story of a vet named Trilok – this works better because the rug-pulling works better. Like the other episodes, this, too, made me wonder what it might have been as a standalone film (the procedural bits wouldn't have appeared so hastily pulled together) – but there's something satisfyingly nasty about divine retribution being wreaked by a man who's lost his faith in God. Ann Augustine has a great moment where she finds out something about her husband and decides she cannot stick around with him to face the consequences. It's these little shades of character that stick, like when Radhika reveals she likes Shekhar because he doesn't let his stutter stop him from completing what he wants to say (except at one devastating moment, when he's struck speechless).

Dulquer is wonderful as a stoic, near-silent gangster – just watch how he keeps it together as he comes across footage of the murder of a family member

Then we enter the world of Shiva, filled with big names (Prakash Belawadi, Qaushiq Mukherjee aka Q, Manoj K Jayan) but lacking a sense of place. When Sruthi Hariharan, who plays Shiva's woman, screams out in frustration and uses the word " mavane " (son of a…), or when the Manoj K Jayan character goads a friend to sing MGR songs (the friend keeps belting out Sivaji Ganesan hits instead), we sense an affectedness – these touches are meant to "root" these characters but end up highlighting how alien they look in this environment. But Dulquer is wonderful as a stoic, near-silent gangster – just watch how he keeps it together as he comes across footage of the murder of a family member. The eyes brim with tears, but the face stays frozen.

The twist really works in this episode. It's not just clever, but also emotionally resonant, looping back to the beginning. The relationship between Shiva and Rukku is a cliché (a violent man; a woman who's chosen to stay with him; hoping against hope), but the bond between Shiva and his younger brother rings true. (Perhaps we fill in the gaps more easily in this relationship.) Sai Tamhankar gets the film's best scene when – despite herself, and almost by instinct – she comforts Shiva's brother, becoming a mother substitute in a story that begins and ends with another mother. This segment also gives us the film's coolest shot, staying by a man inside a hospital and yet glancing at a boy running on the road beyond. The image is breathtaking in its simplicity.

ALSO READ: BARADWAJ RANGAN'S REVIEW OF KARUPPAN

Finally, we get to Rudra, an officer in training. He gets into trouble when he prevents his girlfriend, Bhama (Neha Sharma; would you believe her as a Bhama), from getting engaged to another man. This is the trickiest story, the latest addition to the small canon of Indian films about inappropriate relationships ( Aboorva Raagangal , Bambai Ka Babu , Zameer ) – but the first few scenes are too "cute" (in a style that strives for the early Mani Ratnam feel, but in a very rushed manner) and by the time we get to the meat, it's hard to take anything seriously. Dulquer's star status means we get a song, but the time could have been spent getting to know these people better, so that their big reveals make us empathise with their human failings instead of bursting out laughing.

But amidst the unintended hilarity, there is genuine amusement in the line " Nee enakku sondhamaanava. " (You belong to me.) It's part of the twist and it made me smile when I got it. That's the thing with Solo . There's always something – either conceptually (you've never seen a "betrayed by a best friend" situation like the one here), or in the eclectic soundtrack, or the reason the cyclist in the second episode was smiling at the beginning – that shows things were thought through, that the failures aren't those of intent but of execution. Primarily, the film is another casualty of making a bilingual. The supporting cast looks off. The tone is all over the place. And the stories look like they belong neither here nor there. By time you get to Dino Morea spouting Tamil, you'll see what I mean.

As the songs and trailers of the movie have already made an overwhelming impact on the social media, it’s expected that the film will be a visual treat for DQ fans. The film has 21 songs in total if we put together both Tamil and Malayalam versions.

Solo Movie Review

Director Bejoy Nambiar is a maverick and his scripts are always different from mainstream cinema. Solo, without any questions is on a completely new level because Indian cinema is yet to adopt the concept of an Anthology and bring it out to theaters. However, you don’t get the feeling of seeing an actual movie which is very disappointing.

If the director and the bunch of musicians who composed for Solo should be praised immensely, there’s Dulquer Salmaan who has broken every milestone by agreeing to act in such a movie. Right from the start, the filmmakers have revealed one teaser after the other to give movie goers a brief idea.

When it comes to story, it’s next to impossible to reveal it in Solo because it’s a collection of four different movies put together into a single package. The only connection between these stories is Dulquer Salmaan even though he totally shifts from one look to another, one character to another like Shekar, Rudra and others.

There are commercial films, there are art films but this flick falls into a completely different category and definitely not meant for everyone. Some may feel the narration is very slow while those who love technical aspects like excellent cinematography and non-stop music would enjoy the journey.

Cinematographer Girish Gangadharan has brought the heart and soul of what the director imagined to life with his gorgeous lighting, camera angles and presentation. When it comes to music, it’s tough to credit just one because background score is by Prashant Pillai while songs are composed by Agam, Sez on the Beat and Abhinav Bansal.

Dulquer Salmaan stands tall with an immensely mature performance and it’s a demanding story in which he portrays four different characters with ample variety. Dhansika, John Vijay seamlessly blend with the scenes and so does the rest of the cast who are not familiar faces in Tamil cinema.

Solo’s four movies may not instantly appeal to everyone because the entire setup keeps changing when you finally get ready to invest in the characters and the environment. But, in the future, this could be the film that could be split and enjoyed for multiple viewing because of the eye catchy visuals, brilliant songs and for Dulquer.

·         Dulquer Salmaan amazes with his level of maturity and the ease with which he handles four different roles

·         Sai Dhansika, Sheelu, Anupama and Nithya Sri are all portrayed in standout roles that are sure to earn them recognition

·         Music the soul of solo

Thumbs Down

·         Definitely not the kind of movie most people would enjoy as it’s an anthology, a collection of short films

·         Very slow narrative in all four films

·         Out of the four short films, two are really boring and doesn’t grab your attention at all

Verdict – Solo is not a single movie but a collection of short films which are really slow, bit repetitive and not interesting to watch.

Verdict: Lack of connectivity and slow narration makes Solo below average

An experimental film that rides on Dulquer's shoulders and high technical values

Solo is a progressive film and what helped the director to present his thoughts would be his extremely talented technical team. Solo's soundtrack has about 22 songs composed by 12 music directors. The music is probably the soul of the film. Girish Gangadharans cinematography is another major boost ... (more)

Dulquer Salmaan and Bejoy Nambiar's film is terrific in parts

Maybe the film should have been simpler in terms of its screenplay. Maybe it has to do with Tamil dialogues that are a big let down. Maybe there's something lost in the emotional quotient. Maybe Solo has a lot of unexplored 'grey' areas. For instance, a gangster repeatedly asks the henchman to sing ... (more)

Dulquer Salmaan's movie is a great concept gone awry

Solo, undoubtedly, is an ambitious attempt but it's a great concept gone awry. Two of its best stories could be knitted together and made into a standalone film. The result might have been even more interesting and exciting. (more)

Written by: Bejoy Nambiar, Malayalam: Dhanya Suresh, Tamil: Karthik R. Iyer Directed by  : Bejoy Nambiar Producer  : Abraham Mathew, Anil Jain, Bejoy Nambiar Cast  : Dulquer Salmaan, Neha Sharma, Sai Dhanshika, Sruthi Hariharan, Arthi Venkatesh Music  : Prashant Pillai Cinematography  : Girish Gangadharan, Madhu Neelakandan, Sejal Shah Edited: A. Sreekar Prasad Production   company  : Getaway Films, Malayalam: Abaam Movies, Tamil: Refex Entertainment Running   Time  : 152 mins

When I was walking out of the theatres, I could find a bunch of college going teens, who watched movie along with me saying, “What’s the purpose of this film?” Wait! I was so much bounded to couple of tales (the ones that comes by the second hour involving Shiva and Rudra). Maybe, the final chapter evokes a huge laughter in the theatres for an unconventional twist, somewhere reminiscent of late director K Balachandar movies. But end of the day, PAIN is a PAIN. But someone’s pain and lamentations could turn out to be a humour indeed, which is seen very much by the end. In fact, all the four chapters have a melancholic end that pierces with tragedy in different dimensions. A tint of revenge, relationships and what not, the inevitable separations paint this anthology called ‘Solo’.

Filmmaker Bejoy Nambiar, if he is going to read this entire review, instead of just glimpsing upon the verdict and ratings much alike many might not get what I personally perceived from this film.

But he deserves ‘Best Daring Award’, if any ceremonies are planning to add up to their pre-existing categories in coming years.

His versatility of breakthrough in narrative structures is really appreciable

His versatility of breakthrough in narrative structures is really appreciable. Shaitan, David, Wazir and Solo are the blatant exemplifications. Specifically, David was supposedly a renaissance in screenwriting, which didn’t turn up well. The reason was very well revealed by Bejoy in some of his recent interviews.

So now getting back to the first line of these teens putting forth a question, “What’s the purpose of this film?”

The characterisations of Dulquer signify four avatars of Lord Shiva, four elements of nature.

Bejoy had incessantly kept us enlightened prior to release. The characterisations of Dulquer signify four avatars of Lord Shiva, four elements of nature. But hadn’t this cohort pulling out an unexpected question by the end go through these references. So if I hadn’t gone through Bejoy Nambiar’s enlightening interviews, I could have been one among them joining the league?

Let us not pull out the hypothetical contexts now. But I would even refer this question as a strong element that audiences happened to experience something here into four different worlds, but end of the show didn’t grasp its essence.

In my case, what I personally felt is that all the four tales are really emotional with a mix of lamentations, tragedies and bittersweet memories. Moreover, a person’s grief could be followed by sweetness, revenge, pain and more than all, an unimaginable sorrow that could turn out to be hilarious for people. All these four stories make such an impact.

But by the time, you get settled into a world, you’re commuted to the other one and this keeps happening. Again, it lets me think if this could have prompted those people to question “What’s the purpose of this film?”

Now, I do feel what if Bejoy Nambiar had followed the similar narrative style of ‘David’, where 2-3 parallel tales are alternatively shown with a climax that conjoins them. Here it is not possible though, by placing all the segments on parallel tracks would have given mixed emotions.

By doing so, this question would have been eclipsed and in fact, all the tales would have retained its world in us till end.

So finally, I wind up this review bringing again the context of those people, “What’s the purpose of this film?”But again, if Bejoy Nambiar had attempted to showcase a similar narration, then there would have been a verdict – “Bejoy Nambiar beats the same bush as in narration”. Yes, when comparing on David and Solo , there could be a single factor that might not connect well with people – Tamil version and a contradictory backdrops or locations in few places, but not a big flaw though.

solo movie review in tamil

The anthology film has four stories among which two are the romantic scripts and two are filled with rage. Dulquer plays Shiva, Rudra, Shekar and Trilok. Shiva is a gangster; Rudra is an army officer; Trilok is a mysterious guy and Shekar is a college student. Each segment has different stories and they are not interconnected. Watch the film in the theaters to get good experience!

Star Performance

Dulquer’s way of expressing the emotions is simply superb. His minute expressions in the romantic part make the fans fall for him. Dulquer has not just acted but lived in all the four characters in a unique way. Senior stars like Renji Panicker, Nassar and Suhasini had done their best. Sruthi Hariharan attracts the audiences by her expressive performance. Arthi, Ann and Sheelu have done their jobs as directed.

Bejoy Nambiar, who worked in Bollywood, made his debut in Tamil and Malayalam with Solo. His cast selection is exciting and his narration too. Bejoy has the capability of making the audiences glued to their seats while watching the film. We could notice minute detailing for each and every character in Solo. Good attempt by Bejoy and Dulquer!

What’s There?

  • Performance of the stars is superb
  • Music has given a soul to Solo
  • Star selection is done ideally
  • Visuals are really a treat to the eyes
  • Narration by Bejoy is good

What’s Not There?

  • Not all people love to watch the anthology movies
  • Second half doesn’t impress as the first half did

Solo is definitely a treat to Dulquer fans. All the four characters done by Dulquer are unique and soulful. The film will not disappoint you for sure. Solo gets a place in Dulquer’s most liked films.

Kalki Review: 5

Review Kalki

Review Kalki

Review Kalki

Review Kalki
