Options for Ongoing Learning

At the Graduate School of Social Work, learning doesn’t stop at graduation. We provide a wide range of continuing education (CE) offerings for alumni and the wider community. Due to COVID-19, all continuing education opportunities are now 100% online, but we hope to also gather safely in person in the future. 

With diversity, equity and inclusion as our guiding principles, we cover topics that will help you enhance your professional skills, examine your own identities and how they interact with your work, and advocate for social justice in the spaces you occupy.

All workshops include CE credits approved for clinical social work licensure in the State of Colorado. CE credits are equivalent to contact hours and they do not include accredited CEUs; check your local regulations if you are licensed in another state or for another profession.

Types of GSSW Continuing Education

Practitioners Series

We offer regular workshops on a variety of topics ranging from clinical practice to organizational leadership. These virtual trainings are typically 1-4 hours in length and meet the requirements for clinical social work licensure in the State of Colorado. 

Civic Series

These workshops are a series of continuing education workshops designed to prepare you with the knowledge and skills to create social change. These lower cost workshops allow individuals to grow in their understanding of relevant issues, regardless of their discipline or level of experience. Join fellow changemakers to explore the issues that matter most. 

Post-Master's Certificates

Our post-master's certificates offer the opportunity for professionals to develop new expertise or expand their skill set in an area of specialty. Although workshops are designed with a foundation of social work values, they are open to professionals in all disciplines. You'll earn a certificate of completion from the Graduate School of Social Work.

Envision:You Training Opportunity

Lgbtq+ behavioral health provider training program.

Envision:You  Level 1: Introductory Training is a 75-minute on demand, online training allowing for ease of completion on each participants’ own time.

Envision:You is grateful to announce the receipt of funding from the Colorado Office of Health Equity to support our LGBTQ+ Behavioral Health Provider Training Program. This funding allows the opportunity to offer 25 seats in Level 1: Introductory Training for DU affiliates working in the behavioral health field at no cost.

If you are interested in receiving training at no-cost, fill out the interest form.

Colorado Social Workers

As a Jointly Accredited Organization, NetCE is approved to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Organizations, not individual courses, are approved under this program. Regulatory boards are the final authority on courses accepted for continuing education credit.

The Colorado State Board of Social Work Examiners accepts NetCE's courses as long as directly related to the licensee's professional practice.

Continuing Education Requirement

The Colorado State Board of Social Work Examiners accepts NetCE courses.

LCSW, LISW, LSW, and RSW are required 40 hours every two years, all of which may be completed in the category of coursework.*

* NetCE courses are considered coursework when the participant reads a course, completes the required test, submits payment, and receives a certificate of completion. Participants may obtain all of their required PDH hours through coursework.

Colorado Social Work Continuing Education

Welcome colorado social workers.

Free State Social Work is approved as a continuing education provider by the  Association of Social Work Boards Approved Continuing Education Program  (provider #1235) and the  National Board for Certified Counselors  (provider #6605).  We are also approved by the  Kansas Behavioral Sciences Regulatory Board  (provider 10-001) and the  Florida Board of Clinical Social Work, Marriage and Family Therapy and Mental Health Counseling  (CE Provider # 50-13565).

Does the Colorado Continued Professional Development (CPD) program accept courses from ASWB-approved continuing education providers?

Yes.  The Board does not pre-approve specific courses or providers.  Professional Development Activities must be relevant to the social work field and pertinent to your Learning Plan and goals.

How many hours can I earn with on-line CE courses?

All 40 Professional Development Hours may be earned in the Coursework PDA category.

Please remember that we have done our best to research your state’s licensing guidelines. Licensing regulations can change frequently including guidelines about how many CEUs you can earn on-line. Most jurisdictions require a certain number of hours in ethics and other areas of practice. The final authority for approving any continuing education activity rests with your state board. Even those states that accept ASWB and NBCC approved programs may have exceptions in terms of the courses that they will accept. It is ultimately your responsibility to understand the licensing regulations in your state.

Does Free State Social Work offer Colorado Social Work CEUs?  Trainings?  Contact Hours?  Credit Hours?

Different jurisdictions have different definitions.  For some jurisdictions, the term CEU consists of ten credit hours.  At Free State Social Work, we offer continuing education credit hours and we estimate that each credit hour will require one hour of reading.

Continuing Education (CE) for Colorado Social Workers

Attention : Several states and disciplines have relaxed requirements regarding live / in person Continuing Education due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Please check with your board to see the most current requirements.

CE requirements for CO social workers (LCSW, LSW):

• 40 PDH (professional development hours) every 2 years
• No more than 20 PDH in a single PDA (or category)

Professional development hours (PDH) must be directly relevant to competence in the social work field. Activities should provide new knowledge, skills, or attitudes and sharpen or expand existing skills in professional practice, communication and critical thinking, ethics, cultural competence, professional relationships, professional identity, and professional knowledge.

Professional development activities (PDA)  include: Volunteer Service, Consultation, Supervision, Presenting, Coursework, Publication, Independent Learning. No more than 20 PDH can be credited in a single PDA category during a 2-year renewal cycle. For example, a professional can earn 20 hours in coursework and 20 hours in independent learning to fulfill the requirement.

CE Approvals

At Health, LLC, Provider #1707, is approved to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Organizations, not individual courses, are approved as ACE providers. State and provincial regulatory boards have the final authority to determine whether an individual course may be accepted for continuing education credit. At Health, LLC, maintains responsibility for this course. ACE provider approval period: 5/3/2023-5/3/2026.

At Health, LLC has been approved by NBCC as an Approved Continuing Education Provider, ACEP No. 6949. Programs that do not qualify for NBCC credit are clearly identified. At Health, LLC is solely responsible for all aspects of the programs.

ACE approval demonstrates that a provider or course has been rigorously reviewed and found to offer quality continuing education according to best practices.

ASWB’s Approved Continuing Education program has been designed to review and approve high-quality CE providers and courses, whether they are delivered in person or via distance learning. This approval means that social work continuing education programs are generally acceptable to social work regulatory boards across the United States and Canada.

Academic Standing

Academic standing is a measure of a student’s academic success at CU Boulder based on CU GPA. Academic standing is processed in fall and spring terms, and considers all CU Boulder coursework, including both main campus and Continuing Education courses.

Non-degree Students

Non-degree students are subject to the Continuing Education academic standing policies. Students who fail to maintain a cumulative 2.000 GPA after completion of any semester will receive one semester of Academic Warning. During this semester the student may take Evening Credit, Online Credit, Applied Music, ACCESS, or Summer Session courses in an effort to reach a 2.000 cumulative GPA. If the student fails to receive a 2.000 cumulative GPA after the Academic Warning semester, the student will be placed on Academic Suspension. Students on Academic Suspension may only take Evening Credit, Online Credit, Applied Music, or Summer Session courses and must maintain a 2.500 term GPA or reach an overall cumulative of 2.000 in order to avoid Academic Dismissal. Students on Academic Dismissal are ineligible to enroll in any CU Boulder fall or spring coursework.

Continuing Education does not run academic standing at the end of the summer, and academic standing does not impact a student’s eligibility to enroll in summer coursework. Students who achieve a cumulative GPA of 2.000 at the end of the summer may return to taking courses during the fall and spring semesters.

Degree-Seeking Students

Degree-seeking students are subject to the academic standing policy outlined in the CU Boulder Undergraduate Catalog . Please see the Registrar’s Office website for more information, or schedule an appointment with an academic advisor to explore your options.

Consecutive Semester Withdrawal

Non-degree students in Continuing Education who withdraw from or drop two regular semesters in a row may have a dean’s stop placed on their registration. Summer Session is not counted as a regular semester. These students will not be permitted to enroll at CU Boulder before one full academic year has elapsed (not including their semester of withdrawal).

Petitioning for Exception to Deadlines and Policies

The petition process is designed to provide non-degree students who experience unavoidable, extenuating circumstances, the opportunity to waive a University policy that, if enforced, would result in unsatisfactory academic progress or financial consequences.
