Shadow Master (2022)

SHADOW MASTER (2022) - KUNG FU KINGDOM

Action-horror is a genre combo that’s both enthralling and underutilised, with “Shadow Master” arriving to add another standout entry to that surprisingly infrequent hybrid.

With writer-director pearry teo giving “shadow master” a foreboding, menacing mood, leading man d.y. sao and veterans of youtube’s martial club orchestrate outstanding fight scenes that wrap the action styles of numerous territories into one, not the least of which being hong kong-inspired and absolutely amazing in the delivery “shadow master” makes of it.

D.Y. Sao portrays the movie’s reluctant hero An Voaen, with Layton Matthews playing police detective Russells, who interrogates him in the film’s wrap-around narrative.

Craig Ng plays An Voaen’s ally Boon-Nam, with Anna Harr in the role of Dewitt and Luciana Faulhaber playing Janett.

Eric Gay Jr. portrays Janett’s son Benison, while writer-director Pearry Teo also portrays the deity Hanuman, with Daniel Mah and Brian Le of YouTube’s Martial Club respectively appearing in the roles of Gabriel and Samael.

An Voaen plots his strategy

An Voaen plots his strategy

Former gang member An Voaen wants to leave violence and fighting behind, taking a job as a night watchman at an old hospital that now serves as a homeless shelter. An Voaen’s efforts to avoid fighting don’t last long…

When he hears reports of children being abducted from the hospital, An Voaen fights the arriving gang one dark night and is near-fatally stabbed.

He then finds himself in the ethereal presence of the deity Hanuman, who offers to save his life in exchange for An Voaen becoming his vessel on Earth.

Both An Voaen’s fighting skills and the supernatural power of Hanuman are things he will need on his side for the unfolding battle, in which the Hanuman-powered An Voaen must stop Mephisto and the Four Horsemen from bringing about the end of the world.

Shadow Master is Dark and Loopy

The moody, non-linear story of “Shadow Master” makes the movie’s November release date feel almost like a missed opportunity to capitalize on the Halloween season window.

The vibe of Kevin Tancheron’s 2010’s short “ Mortal Kombat: Rebirth ” permeates “Shadow Master”, right down to the color scheme, police interrogation framing device, and horror movie atmosphere. 2022’s ideal, martial arts-based Halloween flick might have missed the window by a week, but “Shadow Master” still does a fine job of keeping viewers on their toes with the tension of Pearry’s deft direction.

A taste of the shadow masters elbows

A Blend of Action Styles

October tardiness or not, “Shadow Master” is a fun concoction of different styles of action with its Hong Kong, Thai, and Indonesian influences in its many fight scenes.

As An Voaen, D.Y. Sao is a hurricane of kicks and elbows to the 11 th power. Owing to the movie’s dark tone and shuffled flashbacks, many of the fight scenes have an almost slasher-movie like build-up and power, An Voaen himself is all but an involuntary Michael Myers with fists of fury once Hanuman co-opts him into his mission. And speaking of which…

D.Y. Sao Wows with Cambodian Martial Arts!

Martial arts lovers know the joy and thrill of seeing a seldom cinematically-recognized discipline brought to life on screen! Well, D.Y. Sao’s expertise in the Cambodian combat art of Bokator amps up the incredible action scenes of “Shadow Master” to the max.

The horror-esque tone of the movie admittedly makes the action as non-traditional as it is amazing, given the primal survival instinct that takes over onscreen for both An Voaen and his enemies. Still, the battles in the hallways and corridors of “Shadow Master” are some of the best of the year, and there’s no doubt which one takes the crown here.

Martial Club Drop in for the Fun!

In Sao overseeing the fight choreography of “Shadow Master” with the Martial Club luminaries, Martial Club veteran Brian Le is the villainous show-stopper as the henchman Samael.

With the overt action-horror overtones of the movie and the preceding action scenes, An Voaen’s smackdown with Samael is the centerpiece of “Shadow Master” by a long shot.

An Voaen strikes his enemy from above

Sao and Le are allowed far more of an extended timeframe to really face-off in a satisfying showdown, and naturally, Le’s Martial Club roots bring the Hong Kong influences of “Shadow Master” to the fore.

When people talk about individual fight scenes that are worth the entire movie by themselves, Sao and Le’s final battle in “Shadow Master” is one specimen that should be spearheading that conversation.

“Shadow Master” is an action-horror fan’s paradise, and a martial art fanatic’s dream come true with the onscreen ambassador for Cambodian martial arts D.Y. Sao embodies.

The story admittedly takes a minute to get the table set, but “Shadow Master” thrills as an eerie, supernatural horror movie, and a Hong Kong action movie made in the states.

With 2022 now three for three on that very gimmick with the added entries of “ Everything Everywhere All At Once ” and “ Accident Man: Hitman’s Holiday ”, “Shadow Master” demands that trend continue into the foreseeable future!

SHADOW MASTER – Review

shadow master movie review

When you’re making an urban post-apocalyptic, supernatural martial arts movie a lot can go wrong, and most of it does in SHADOW MASTER. The plot is mostly drivel about The Four Horsemen (without horses) of the Apocalypse snatching children from a rundown multi-story warehouse that is shelter for a bedraggled group of survivors of whatever the unspecified disaster was that left the world all gray and smoky, inside and out. The evil quartet is doing this for a world-conquering ritual, opposed by some sort of Death God, who recruits our hero (D.Y. Sao) to take on his powers at the cost of his soul to protect the folks he’s only just met when the thing starts.

Actually, the opening scene has Sao, face obscured by long hair like the creepy gal from THE RING, killing a bunch of cops, then surrendering to the rest and explaining to their boss how he got to that point for the rest of the movie.

Writer/director Pearry Reginald Teo serves up a set of characters whose powers defy logic with their ebbs and flows. Sao is killed once, or more than once – hard to keep track – only to come back stronger… except when he’s weaker. He has to kill all four Horsemen to save the day, since killing a few of them several times has no lasting effect. Visually, almost every shot occurs in the dark labyrinthian building that also houses some radioactive waste for reasons never made clear. Or relevant. The sound track does no favors to Teo’s dialog, with much almost unintelligible for a variety of reasons, including the fact that several important characters speak in gravelly voices through full-face masks. Even worse, the ending dangles prospects for a friggin’ sequel!

So why bother? If you don’t already know who D.Y. Sao is (I didn’t), tune in for his fight scenes. The Cambodian-born, U.S.-raised dude has all the real martial skills and dazzling acrobatic gifts of Tony Jaa, without his resting angry face. Sao has almost as many stunt credits (16) as acting (21), with many of the former, including this one, as coordinator or choreographer. English being his primary language gives him a leg up for acting gigs over Jaa and the bevy of budding action stars from Korea, Malaysia, Thailand and other countries who are cranking out first-rate martial arts flicks for international markets. He’s also got the looks and presence for leading roles in better films. Sao is a solid candidate for becoming Hollywood’s next Jet Li.

For those who find the plot as confusing as I did, the film can still be worth watching by fast-forwarding through everything between the fights. Great moves abound. Without wires. Cool.

SHADOW MASTER opens in select theaters on Friday, Nov. 4 and available on-demand and on digital platforms from Saban Films starting Nov. 8.

RATING: 1.5 out of 4 stars

Film Review: Shadow Master (2022) by Pearry Reginald Tao

shadow master movie review

As a child I was fascinated by “Manimal” an old TV series where a man could transform into various creatures. Also, by “Braveheart” a cartoon sheriff with the powers of hawk, wolf, puma, and bear (currently singing that as I write this). So, the concept of a guy revived with martial animal powers caught my attention. With one of the executive producers ( Prachya Pinkaew ) being the man who brought us Tony Jaa it looked like there could be some potential here. I mean what martial arts movie fan doesn’t mind a bit of Tiger or Monkey Style? Can’t be too bad right???

Told in flashback to Detective Russells ( Layton Matthews ), An Voaen ( D.Y. Sao ) takes a watchman job at a mental institute. Here Mephisto and the Four Horsemen are abducting children for a sacrificial ritual to bring about the end of times, aka “The Judgement Day.” An succumbs during his first confrontation with the Horsemen but is later resurrected with enormous strength after trading his soul with the Death God. Now possessed with exceptional martial arts skills, he battles to defend the residents and safe the abducted children.

Low budget cinema has often made a virtue of making the most out of its restrictions. Here, sadly, some of the worst elements are at play. The camera filters are overdone. Lots of scenes have a sickly green hue that looks like Slimer from “Ghostbusters” has gone amok in the projection booth. The restriction in setting is not in itself an issue, but it becomes evident the more and more it tries to distract you from it. The villains all appear to have emerged from a cosplay convention too. We have “Shaolin Monk” guy, someone who has apparently raided Grace Jones’s wardrobe and a Cenobite wannabee with what looks suspiciously like tin foil wrapped around their facial outfit. Throw in another character resembling Harlequin and another channeling General Kael from “Willow” and it’s all reminiscent of things you have seen before.

This is a theme that applies to the whole feature sadly. The dystopian setting was a frequent one for low budget action cinema in the straight to video era. The excessive violence could easily have come from “Fist of the North Star” or any of its Anime\Live action ilk. The use of the different animal styles is a clever concept but not really executed that well, apart from the admittedly entertaining action choreography. There is a fluidity to these sequences and are what sporadically bring this feature to life. Just when you are starting to drift off it will suddenly have a burst of gory action to wake you up, only to be sent to sleep again due to the meandering narrative. Almost forgot the cute kids. Yes, that cliché is here again. Ever since “Mad Max 2” you need a bundle of cute, abandoned\orphaned children to melt the heart of a relentless killing machine and add some emotion\sentiment. Here they are needed as part of a plot to bring around the apocalypse….as you do. There is even an allusion to the Monkey King story with An Voaen gradually being taken over by his spirit. It’s too many disparate elements though for the short running time to factor into a cohesive whole.

D.Y. Sao, the Cambodian, lead has the physical attributes but not the acting chops to bring his part to life. Incidentally, no male lead should have better hair than his female counterpart, just looks wrong! The result is we never really engage with his character and his circumstances. It leaves the whole picture feeling rather flat. As a choreographer, he has potential though. The use of animal styles is well worked into the aggressive movements and the action is well framed and clear. It has some exceptionally violent moments so perhaps not one for the squeamish!

This is the classic definition of what would have been an old fashioned direct to video release. One that you would simply fast forward through the talking bits to get to the action. The action is worth catching, sadly the stuff that wraps around it is nothing you’ll not have seen before and apart from what appears to be a desperate costume designers cry for help.

Fight choreography excellent, story not very good.
Some really good fights but the story was bull. As the guy Mitch says they were like power rangers. Whoever was in charge of the fighting gets big thumbs up from me although some fights at the start could have been longer. If there is another Shadow Master then leave the weird demon things out.
If you love your martial arts movies then you should really enjoy Shadow Master. It starts of mysteriously with our new hero being investigated for being in a building with 18+ dead bodies and no clue as to why there are dead. We go back in the past to discover he was a nights watchman for what is supposed to be a tough period, with kids going missing, possibly because of ghosts. The fight scenes that we quickly get to watch are fantastic, there's a whole host of different fighting techniques, some you will recognise, others you might have to study. On top of the great choreography in Shadow Master we see plenty of bone breaking moves and a good selection of bad guys, all with their unique martial art styles. The acting is fine and any flaws I have simply swept aside for Shadow Master given it's a full on action movie so it's not worth dwelling on. The story gets easier to hold onto the further in we go, and yes, we do witness a little PTSD from our protagonist. With the police authorities not seeming to care about the kids going missing nor the distress of the parents, the nights watchman decides to investigate himself. We do keep skipping back to his police interview from the beginning which slows it down a bit but only a touch. He soon discovers the reason for the missing children and more fighting ensues and he takes quite a kicking from someone I assume is wearing on of those masks used in the days of the plague. Our Shadow Master awakes with super special skills given to him by what could be the four horseman but could be mistaken for some of the bad guys from Power Rangers. Once he has these new skills though, he goes on a spree to rid the city of as much evil as he can. The flashback fighting scenes do have blurry edges for effect but I thought that took away from the quality, we also have to watch all fight scenes in the dark which is understandable but a shame. Anyway, as previously mentioned, if you like martial arts movies then Shadow Master will need to feature high up on your watchlist over the next few days and weeks.

‘Shadow Master’ Review

Stars: Layton Matthews, D.Y. Sao, Anna Harr, Dominique Swain, Craig Ng | Written and Directed by Pearry Reginald Teo

Set in what appears to be a dystopian, and possibly post-apocalyptic America, Shadow Master opens with a SWAT team walking in on a martial arts battle in what looks like a hospital turned into a slaughterhouse complete with hooks and chains.

They arrest the only person still alive. Back at the station Detective Russells (Layton Matthews; Fast Vengeance, Necromentia ) begins interrogating the suspect. He claims to be John Doe, although we’ll later find out his mane is actually An Voaen (D.Y. Sao; Everything Everywhere All at Once, War Machine ), the hospital’s night watchman. A job that paid him with food and a place to live.

The hospital is actually abandoned, and judging by its occupants such as the Harley Quinn wannabe Dewitt (Anna Harr; Hot Seat , The Curse of Sleeping Beauty ) and her mother (Dominique Swain; 4 Horsemen: Apocalypse , Minutes to Midnight ) might have been an asylum. The group’s leader Boon-Nam (Craig Ng; Exorcism at 60,000 Feet , Big Trouble in Little China ) tells him that there have been issues with children disappearing in the night, apparently taken by ghosts.

Don’t be fooled by the mention of Prachya Pinkaew, director of Ong Bak, Chocolate, and The Protector among others in the film’s publicity. He was just one of Shadow Master ’s several producers. The film was actually written and directed by Pearry Reginald Teo ( The Gene Generation, The Assent ).

He opens the film with a first act that has its moments but is extremely jumbled, cutting back and forth between the hospital, the police station, and flashbacks to An’s own criminal past. Similarly, the plot itself draws in Mephisto, The Four Horsemen, The Monkey King, and Hungry Ghost Month, and, after An is killed and revived, The Crow.

None of this makes any real sense though it does have a sort of internal logic, it’s the logic of the nightmares you get when you’re sick and running a fever. So An making a deal with the Death God Hanuman, played by Teo, doesn’t seem overly strange by the time it happens. The same with the Four Horsemen who look more like very low-budget Cenobites or extras from a GWAR concert than anything from the bible or from pro wrestling. They just sort of fit into the look of Shadow Master ’s world.

The main reason to watch Shadow Master is the fight scenes and we do get plenty of them. Sao is a talented fighter and stuntman who puts on quite a show with moves pulled from various styles including bokator from his native Cambodia. They’re presented in a style that fans of Tomy Jaa’s early films will recognize, even if they lack Pinkaew’s mastery. The brawls get progressively more bloody as the film goes on, which should help satisfy horror fans.

Unfortunately, even by low-budget action standards, he’s not much of an actor. Sao delivers his lines in a monotone that’s supposed to sound world-weary but actually makes him sound like he’s bored. Actually, much of the cast underplay their roles, and it’s fun when one cuts loose, screaming at An, “You dare to accuse me based on smell?”.

If you’re looking for a horror film, Shadow Master will probably disappoint you. The film’s various supernatural elements aren’t really frightening and they don’t amount to much. It’s treated as a novelty and an excuse to throw in some extra effects and costumes. You could change the Four Horsemen and their ritual to human traffickers without too much effort.

While it could have been a lot better, Shadow Master is a lot more entertaining than I expected. If you avoid paying too much attention to the details and enjoy the fights, it’s an OK way to kill ninety minutes.

Saban Films released Shadow Master on VOD and Digital platforms on November 8th. ______
