Class Central , a Tripadvisor for online education, has helped 60 million learners find their next course. We’ve been combing through online education for more than a decade to aggregate a catalog of over 150,000 online courses and 200,000 reviews written by our users. And we’re online learners ourselves: combined, the Class Central team has completed over 400 online courses, including online degrees.
I’ve (Archisha) been using Microsoft PowerPoint since my school days, not just for work but for fun as well!
I (Archisha) have taken over 50 online courses in various subjects. My experience as an online learner and teacher has given me some perspective on what to look for in an online course. I used my experience to evaluate each course in this list. Fabio also has experience as an online learner and as a tutor who revised the research and the latest version of this article.
Trying to find “the best” can be daunting, even for those of us who live and breathe online courses. Here’s how we approached this task.
First, we combed through Class Central’s Catalog and the internet to find a variety of free and paid open courses, some with certificates.
We extracted information from course syllabi and reviews, and compiled their ratings, leveraging the Class Central database with over 200 Microsoft PowerPoint courses and its thousands of course ratings and reviews written by our users as well as available course provider ratings. We watched some course videos to sample courses we hadn’t already taken.
Then, we defined the scope for these recommendations. A PowerPoint course can cover various topics, so we chose top courses from a range of sub-fields.
Ultimately, we used a combination of data and our own judgment to make these picks. We’re confident these recommendations will be a reliable way to learn PowerPoint’s main features.

The Importance of Presentation Skills
Persuasive presentations, instructional presentations, informative presentations, inspirational presentations, basic presentation skills, what are the main difficulties when giving a presentation, recommendations to improve your presentation skills, closing statement.
Effective communication is the answer to reaching business and academic goals. The scenarios in which we can be required to deliver a presentation are as diverse as one can imagine. Still, some core concepts apply to all presentations.
We define presentation skills as a compendium of soft skills that directly affect your presentation performance and contribute to creating a great presentation. These are not qualities acquired by birth but skills you ought to train and master to delve into professional environments.
You may ask: is it really that evident when a presenter is not prepared? Here are some common signs people can experience during presentations:
- Evasive body language: Not making eye contact with the audience, arms closed tightly to the body, hands in pockets all the time.
- Lack of interest in the presenter’s voice: dull tone, not putting an effort to articulate the topics.
- Doubting when asked to answer a question
- Irksome mood
The list can go on about common presenter mistakes , and most certainly, it will affect the performance of any presented data if the lack of interest by the presenter is blatantly obvious. Another element to consider is anxiety, and according to research by the National Institute of Mental Health, 73% of the population in the USA is affected by glossophobia , which is the fear of public speaking, judgment, or negative evaluation by other people.
Therefore, presentation skills training is essential for any business professional who wants to achieve effective communication . It will remove the anxiety from presentation performance and help users effectively deliver their message and connect with the audience.
Archetypes of presentations
Persuasive presentations aim to convince the audience – often in short periods – to acquire a product or service, adhere to a cause, or invest in a company. For business entrepreneurs or politicians, persuasive presentations are their tool for the trade.
Unless you aim to be perceived as an imposter, a proper persuasive presentation has the elements of facts, empathy, and logic, balanced under a well-crafted narrative. The central pillar of these presentations is to identify the single factor that gathered your audience: it could be a market need, a social cause, or a revolutionary concept for today’s society. It has to be something with enough power to gather critiques – both good and bad.
That single factor has to be backed up by facts. Research that builds your hypothesis on how to solve that problem. A deep understanding of the target audience’s needs , concerns, and social position regarding the solution your means can offer. When those elements are in place, building a pitch becomes an easy task.
Graphics can help you introduce information in a compelling format, lowering the need for lengthy presentations. Good presentation skills for persuasive presentations go by the hand of filtering relevant data and creating the visual cues that resonate with what your audience demands.
One powerful example of a persuasive presentation is the technique known as the elevator pitch . You must introduce your idea or product convincingly to the audience in a timeframe between 30 seconds and less than 2 minutes. You have to expose:
- What do you do
- What’s the problem to solve
- Why is your solution different from others
- Why should the audience care about your expertise
![presentation making course presentation skills an elevator pitch slide](https://cdn.slidemodel.com/wp-content/uploads/01-presenting-an-elevator-pitch.png)
For that very purpose, using engaging graphics with contrasting colors elevates the potential power of your message. It speaks professionalism, care for details, and out-of-the-box thinking. Knowing how to end a presentation is also critical, as your CTAs should be placed with care.
Therefore, let’s resume the requirements of persuasive presentations in terms of good presentation skills:
- Identifying problems and needs
- Elaborating “the hook” (the element that grabs the audience’s attention)
- Knowing how to “tie” your audience (introducing a piece of information related to the hook that causes an emotional impact)
- Broad knowledge of body language and hand gestures to quickly convey your message
- Being prepared to argue a defense of your point of view
- Handling rejection
- Having a proactive attitude to convert opportunities into new projects
- Using humor, surprise, or personal anecdotes as elements to sympathize with the audience
- Having confidence
- Be able to summarize facts and information in visually appealing ways

In the case of instructional presentations, we ought to differentiate two distinctive types:
- Lecture Presentations : Presentations being held at universities or any other educative institution. Those presentations cover, topic by topic, and the contents of a syllabus and are created by the team of teachers in charge of the course.
- Training Presentations : These presentations take place during in-company training sessions and usually comprise a good amount of content that is resumed into easy-to-take solutions. They are aimed to coach employees over certain topics relevant to their work performance. The 70-20-10 Model is frequently used to address these training situations.
Lecture presentations appeal to the gradual introduction of complex concepts, following a structure set in the course’s syllabus. These presentations often have a similar aesthetic as a group of professors or researchers created to share their knowledge about a topic. Personal experience does tell that course presentations often rely on factual data, adequately documented, and on the theoretical side.
An example of a presentation that lies under this concept is a Syllabus Presentation, used by the teaching team to introduce the subject to new students, evaluation methods, concepts to be learned, and expectations to pass the course.
![presentation making course using a course syllabus presentation to boost your instructional presentation skills](https://cdn.slidemodel.com/wp-content/uploads/02-course-syllabus-presentation-template.png)
On the other hand, training presentations are slide decks designed to meet an organization’s specific needs in the formal education of their personnel. Commonly known as “continuous education,” plenty of companies invest resources in coaching their employees to achieve higher performance results. These presentations have the trademark of being concise since their idea is to introduce the concepts that shall be applied in practice sessions.
Ideally, the training presentations are introduced with little text and easy-to-recognize visual cues. Since the idea is to summarize as much as possible, these are visually appealing for the audience. They must be dynamic enough to allow the presenter to convey the message.
![presentation making course presentation skills example of a training presentation](https://cdn2.slidemodel.com/wp-content/uploads/03-training-course-resume-template.png)
Those key takeaways remind employees when they revisit their learning resources and allow them to ruminate on questions that fellow workers raise.
To sum up this point, building presentation skills for instructional presentations requires:
- Ability to put complex concepts into simpler words
- Patience and a constant learning mindset
- Voice training to deliver lengthy speeches without being too dense
- Ability to summarize points and note the key takeaways
- Empathizing with the audience to understand their challenges in the learning process
![presentation making course skill requirements for instructional presentations](https://cdn.slidemodel.com/wp-content/uploads/08-infographics-instructional-presentations-skills-resume.png)
The informative presentations take place in business situations, such as when to present project reports from different departments to the management. Another potential usage of these presentations is in SCRUM or other Agile methodologies, when a sprint is completed, to discuss the advance of the project with the Product Owner.
As they are presentations heavily dependent on data insights, it’s common to see the usage of infographics and charts to express usually dense data in simpler terms and easy to remember.
![presentation making course a SCRUM process being shown in an informative slide](https://cdn.slidemodel.com/wp-content/uploads/04-scrum-process-explanation.png)
Informative presentations don’t just fall into the business category. Ph.D. Dissertation and Thesis presentations are topics that belong to the informative presentations category as they condense countless research hours into manageable reports for the academic jury.
![presentation making course an example of a thesis dissertation template](https://cdn2.slidemodel.com/wp-content/uploads/05-phd-dissertation-example-template.png)
Since these informational presentations can be perceived as lengthy and data-filled, it is important to learn the following professional presentation skills:
- Attention to detail
- Be able to explain complex information in simpler terms
- Creative thinking
- Powerful diction
- Working on pauses and transitions
- Pacing the presentation, so not too much information is divulged per slide
![presentation making course skill requirements for informational presentations](https://cdn2.slidemodel.com/wp-content/uploads/09-infographics-informational-presentations-skills-resume.png)
The leading inspirational platform, TEDx, comes to mind when talking about inspirational presentations. This presentation format has the peculiarity of maximizing the engagement with the audience to divulge a message, and due to that, it has specific requirements any presenter must meet.
This presentation format usually involves a speaker on a stage, either sitting or better standing, in which the presenter engages with the audience with a storytelling format about a life experience, a job done that provided a remarkable improvement for society, etc.
![presentation making course using a quote slide to boost inspirational presentation skills](https://cdn.slidemodel.com/wp-content/uploads/06-inspirational-quote-slide.png)
Empathizing with the audience is the key ingredient for these inspirational presentations. Still, creativity is what shapes the outcome of your performance as people are constantly looking for different experiences – not the same recipe rephrased with personal touches. The human factor is what matters here, way above data and research. What has your experience to offer to others? How can it motivate another human being to pursue a similar path or discover their true calling?
To achieve success in terms of communication skills presentation, these inspirational presentations have the following requirements:
- Focus on the audience (engage, consider their interests, and make them a part of your story)
- Putting ego aside
- Creative communication skills
- Storytelling skills
- Body language knowledge to apply the correct gestures to accompany your story
- Voice training
- Using powerful words

After discussing the different kinds of presentations we can come across at any stage of our lives, a group of presentation skills is standard in any type of presentation. See below what makes a good presentation and which skills you must count on to succeed as a presenter.
Punctuality
Punctuality is a crucial aspect of giving an effective presentation. Nothing says more about respect for your audience and the organization you represent than delivering the presentation on time . Arriving last minute puts pressure on the tech team behind audiovisuals, as they don’t have enough preparation to test microphones, stage lights, and projector settings, which can lead to a less powerful presentation Even when discussing presentations hosted in small rooms for a reduced audience, testing the equipment becomes essential for an effective presentation.
A solution for this is to arrive at least 30 minutes early. Ideally, one hour is a sweet spot since the AV crew has time to check the gear and requirements for your presentation. Another benefit of this, for example, in inspirational presentations, is measuring the previous presenter’s impact on the audience. This gives insights about how to resonate with the public, and their interest, and how to accommodate your presentation for maximum impact.
Body Language
Our bodies can make emotions transparent for others, even when we are unaware of such a fact. Proper training for body language skills reduces performance anxiety, giving the audience a sense of expertise about the presented topic.
Give your presentation and the audience the respect they deserve by watching over these potential mistakes:
- Turning your back to the audience for extended periods : It’s okay to do so when introducing an important piece of information or explaining a graph, but it is considered rude to give your back to the audience constantly.
- Fidgeting : We are all nervous in the presence of strangers, even more, if we are the center of attention for that moment. Instead of playing with your hair or making weird hand gestures, take a deep breath to center yourself before the presentation and remember that everything you could do to prepare is already done. Trust your instincts and give your best.
- Intense eye contact : Have you watched a video where the presenter stared at the camera the entire time? That’s the feeling you transmit to spectators through intense eye contact. It’s a practice often used by politicians to persuade.
- Swearing : This is a no-brainer. Even when you see influencers swearing on camera or in podcasts or live presentations, it is considered an informal and lousy practice for business and academic situations. If you have a habit to break when it comes to this point, find the humor in these situations and replace your swear words with funny alternatives (if the presentation allows for it).
Voice Tone plays a crucial role in delivering effective presentations and knowing how to give a good presentation. Your voice is a powerful tool for exposing your ideas and feelings . Your voice can articulate the message you are telling, briefing the audience if you feel excited about what you are sharing or, in contrast, if you feel the presentation is a burden you ought to complete.
Remember, passion is a primary ingredient in convincing people. Therefore, transmitting such passion with a vibrant voice may help gather potential business partners’ interest.
But what if you feel sick prior to the presentation? If, by chance, your throat is sore minutes before setting foot on the stage, try this: when introducing yourself, mention that you are feeling a bit under the weather. This resonates with the audience to pay more attention to your efforts. In case you don’t feel comfortable about that, ask the organizers for a cup of tea, as it will settle your throat and relax your nerves.
Tech Skills
Believe it or not, people still feel challenged by technology these days. Maybe that’s the reason why presentation giants like Tony Robbins opt not to use PowerPoint presentations . The reality is that there are plenty of elements involved in a presentation that can go wrong from the tech side:
- A PDF not opening
- Saving your presentation in a too-recent PowerPoint version
- A computer not booting up
- Mac laptops and their never-ending compatibility nightmare
- Not knowing how to change between slides
- Not knowing how to use a laser pointer
- Internet not working
- Audio not working
We can come up with a pretty long list of potential tech pitfalls, and yet more than half of them fall in presenters not being knowledgeable about technology.
If computers aren’t your thing, let the organization know about this beforehand. There is always a crew member available to help presenters switch between slides or configure the presentation for streaming. This takes the pressure off your shoulders, allowing you to concentrate on the content to present. Remember, even Bill Gates can get a BSOD during a presentation .
Presentations, while valuable for conveying information and ideas, can be daunting for many individuals. Here are some common difficulties people encounter when giving presentations:
![](http://ortec.site/777/templates/cheerup1/res/banner1.gif)
Public Speaking Anxiety
Glossophobia, the fear of public speaking, affects a significant portion of the population. This anxiety can lead to nervousness, trembling, and forgetfulness during a presentation.
Lack of Confidence
Many presenters struggle with self-doubt, fearing that they may not be knowledgeable or skilled enough to engage their audience effectively.
Content Organization
Organizing information in a coherent and engaging manner can be challenging. Presenters often grapple with how to structure their content to make it easily digestible for the audience. Artificial Intelligence can help us significantly reduce the content arrangement time when you work with tools like our AI Presentation Maker (made for presenters by experts in presentation design).
Audience Engagement
Keeping the audience’s attention and interest throughout the presentation can be difficult. Distractions, disengaged attendees, or lack of interaction can pose challenges.
Technical Issues
Technology glitches, such as malfunctioning equipment, incompatible file formats, or poor internet connectivity, can disrupt presentations and increase stress.
Time Management
Striking the right balance between providing enough information and staying within time limits is a common challenge. Going over or under the allotted time can affect the effectiveness of the presentation.
Handling Questions and Challenges
Responding to unexpected questions, criticism, or challenges from the audience can be difficult, especially when presenters are unprepared or lack confidence in their subject matter.
Visual Aids and Technology
Creating and effectively using visual aids like slides or multimedia can be a struggle for some presenters. Technical competence is essential in this aspect.
Language and Articulation
Poor language skills or unclear articulation can hinder effective communication. Presenters may worry about stumbling over words or failing to convey their message clearly.
Maintaining appropriate and confident body language can be challenging. Avoiding nervous habits, maintaining eye contact, and using gestures effectively requires practice.
Overcoming Impersonal Delivery
In virtual presentations, maintaining a personal connection with the audience can be difficult. The absence of face-to-face interaction can make it challenging to engage and read the audience.
Cultural and Diversity Awareness
Presenting to diverse audiences requires sensitivity to cultural differences and varying levels of familiarity with the topic.
In this section, we gathered some tips on how to improve presentation skills that can certainly make an impact if applied to your presentation skills. We believe these skills can be cultivated to transform into habits for your work routine.
Tip #1: Build a narrative
One memorable way to guarantee presentation success is by writing a story of all the points you desire to cover. This statement is based on the logic behind storytelling and its power to connect with people .
Don’t waste time memorizing slides or reading your presentation to the audience. It feels unnatural, and any question that diverts from the topic in discussion certainly puts you in jeopardy or, worse, exposes you as a fraud in the eyes of the audience. And before you ask, it is really evident when a presenter has a memorized speech.
Build and rehearse the presentation as if telling a story to a group of interested people. Lower the language barrier by avoiding complex terms that maybe even you aren’t fully aware of their meaning. Consider the ramifications of that story, what it could lead to, and which are the opportunities to explore. Then, visualize yourself giving the presentation in a natural way.
Applying this technique makes the presentation feel like second nature to you. It broadens the spectrum in which you can show expertise over a topic or even build the basis for new interesting points of view about the project.
Tip #2: Don’t talk for more than 3 minutes per slide
It is a common practice of presenters to bombard the audience with facts and information whilst retaining the same slide on the screen. Why can this happen? It could be because the presenter condensed the talk into very few slides and preferred to talk. The reality is that your spectators won’t retain the information you are giving unless you give visual cues to help that process.
Opt to prepare more slides and pace your speech to match the topics shown on each slide. Don’t spend more than 3 minutes per slide unless you have to introduce a complex piece of data. Use visual cues to direct the spectators about what you talk about, and summarize the principal concepts discussed at the end of each section.
Tip #3: Practice meditation daily
Anxiety is the number one enemy of professional presenters. It slowly builds without you being aware of your doubts and can hinder your performance in multiple ways: making you feel paralyzed, fidgeting, making you forget language skills or concepts, affecting your health, etc.
Meditation is an ancient practice taken from Buddhist teachings that train your mind to be here in the present. We often see the concepts of meditation and mindfulness as synonyms, whereas you should be aware that meditation is a practice that sets the blocks to reach a state of mindfulness. For presenters, being in the here and now is essential to retain focus, but meditation techniques also teach us to control our breathing and be in touch with our body signals when stress builds up.
The customary practice of meditation has an impact on imagination and creativity but also helps to build patience – a skill much needed for connecting with your audience in instructional presentations.
Having the proper set of presentation skills can be quite subjective. It goes beyond presentation tips and deepens into how flexible we can be in our ability to communicate ideas.
Different presentations and different audiences shape the outcome of our efforts. Therefore, having a basic understanding of how to connect, raise awareness, and empathize with people can be key ingredients for your career as a presenter. A word of advice: success doesn’t happen overnight. It takes dedication and patience to build communication skills . Don’t condition your work to believe you will be ready “someday”; it’s best to practice and experience failure as part of the learning process.

What It Takes to Give a Great Presentation

Five tips to set yourself apart.
Never underestimate the power of great communication. It can help you land the job of your dreams, attract investors to back your idea, or elevate your stature within your organization. But while there are plenty of good speakers in the world, you can set yourself apart out by being the person who can deliver something great over and over. Here are a few tips for business professionals who want to move from being good speakers to great ones: be concise (the fewer words, the better); never use bullet points (photos and images paired together are more memorable); don’t underestimate the power of your voice (raise and lower it for emphasis); give your audience something extra (unexpected moments will grab their attention); rehearse (the best speakers are the best because they practice — a lot).
I was sitting across the table from a Silicon Valley CEO who had pioneered a technology that touches many of our lives — the flash memory that stores data on smartphones, digital cameras, and computers. He was a frequent guest on CNBC and had been delivering business presentations for at least 20 years before we met. And yet, the CEO wanted to sharpen his public speaking skills.

How to make your presentation sound more like a conversation.
The main difference between strong, confident speakers and speakers who seem nervous in front of the room is in how relaxed and conversational they appear. Here are some basic pointers that will help you create a conversational tone when speaking, regardless of the size of your audience.
1. Avoid using the word, “presentation.” Every time you say, “I’m here to give you a presentation on X,” or, “In this presentation, you’ll see…,” you are emphasizing the formal, structured, sometimes artificial nature of the interaction. No one wants to be “presented” to. Instead, use language that emphasizes a natural, conversational exchange. “We’re here today to talk about X,” or “Today I’ll be sharing some ideas regarding Y.” You can even go so far as to say, “I’m glad we have time together today to discuss Z.” Even if your talk is not going to truly be a dialogue, you can use language that suggests engagement with the audience.
2. If you are using PowerPoint, avoid using the word “slide.” Instead of talking about the medium, talk about the concepts. Swap out, “This slide shows you…,” for, “Here we see….” Instead of saying, “On that slide I showed you a moment ago,” say, “A moment ago we were discussing X. Here’s how that issue will impact Y and Z.” Casual conversations don’t usually involve slide decks. Just because your complicated presentation on tax exposure, supply chain issues, or new health care regulations requires you to use slides, doesn’t mean you have to draw attention to that fact that the setting is formal and structured.
3. For many large-group events, speakers are provided with what’s called a “confidence monitor,” a computer screen that sits on the floor at the speaker’s feet showing the slide that appears on the large screen above the speaker’s head. Avoid using confidence monitors. Our natural inclination when using a confidence monitor is to gesture at the bullet point we’re discussing at the moment. However, we are pointing to a bullet point on the screen at our feet, which the audience can’t see, so it creates a disconnect between us and the audience. Instead, stand to the side of the large screen and gesture at the bullet point you’re talking about so that the audience knows which point you are discussing at the moment.
4. Don’t tell your audience, “I want this to be interactive.” It’s your job to make it interactive. If you are delivering the type of presentation where your audience size allows you to create true engagement with your listeners, create that connecting in stages to “warm up” the audience. Stage One engagement is to ask the audience a question relevant to your topic that you know most of the audience members can respond to affirmatively. “Who here has ever bought a new car?” or, “How many of you have ever waited more than 5 minutes on hold on a customer service line?” Raise your hand as you ask the question to indicate to the audience how to respond. Whoever has raised their hand has now participated in the discussion. They have indicated a willingness to engage. Stage Two engagement is calling on one of the people who raised their hand and asking a specific, perfunctory question. Again, it needs to be a question they can answer easily. If your first questions is, “Who here has bought a new car?” you can then call on someone and ask, “How long ago,” or “What kind of car did you buy most recently?” If your first question was, “Have you ever waited on hold for more than 5 minutes,” you can’t ask, “What company were you calling at the time?” The people who raised their hands weren’t thinking of a specific instance; they were just thinking broadly about that type of experience. You could, however, call on someone and ask, “Do you prefer when they play music or ads for the company’s products?” Anyone can answer that question. At that point, you are in an actual dialogue with that person. Stage Three engagement is asking them a question where they need to reveal something more personal. “How does that make you feel when you hear those ads?” You’ve warmed up your audience and drawn them in with baby steps. Now you have actual, meaningful audience participation.

5. Use gestures. When we’re speaking in an informal setting, we all use hand gestures; some people use more than others, but we all use them. When we try to rein in our gestures, two things happen that diminish our speaking style. First, we look stiff and unnatural. We look like we are presenting a guarded or cautious version of ourselves; we look less genuine. Second, hand gestures burn up the nervous energy we all have when speaking in front of a large group. That’s good. When we try to minimize our hand gestures, we tie up that nervous energy and it starts to leak out on odd ways, where we start to tap our foot, fidget with our notes or microphone, or tilt our head side to side to emphasize key points. Just let the gestures fly. It’s unlikely they will be too large or distracting. I have coached people on their presentation skills for 26 years. In that time, I have met three people who gestured too much. Everyone else would benefit from using their gestures more freely.
The impact we have as communicators is based on the cumulative effect of many different elements of our delivery. These suggestions alone won’t make you a terrific presenter. They will, however, add to the overall package your present of yourself when speaking to large audiences.

MSU Extension Master Gardener Program
Master gardener conference.
August 23, 2024 - August 24, 2024
Registration Deadline: August 1, 2024 - 12:00AM
Interlochen Center for the Arts, 4000 J. Maddy Pkwy, Interlochen, MI 49643
Michigan State University Extension Master Gardeners will hold their biannual conference August 23-24 at Interlochen Center for the Arts. Open to all gardening enthusiasts, it was formerly known as the “Master Gardener College”. The name has been newly changed to the “ Master Gardener Conference ” to avoid confusion with the Master Gardener training course. The title and theme of this year’s conference is “Creating a Greener Michigan” and will focus on climate change and sustainability. Keynote speakers c will address topics of climate change, creating urban and suburban meadows, and making gardens essential life centers. Sessions will range from understanding the impact of climate change on insect populations and forests, growing native plants and pollinator protection to seed saving and composting. The goal of this conference is to provide gardeners with the tools and knowledge to use sustainable practices in their own lives and gardens.
Our first keynote speaker will be Chris Edwards, whose presentation is titled “Simple, Serious, Solvable-Climate Change as of 2024.” As an award-winning weather forecaster with a long career, Chris has been involved in studying and reporting specifically on global warming since 1987. He is currently the climate change specialist for the city of Detroit and gives climate change presentations in many venues. He will explain the impacts of climate change and explore a range of ideas to address the significant challenges we face and what each of us can do.
Saturday morning will begin with a virtual speaker. Best-selling author and garden designer Benjamin Vogt will present “Unlawn America- An Introduction to Creating Urban and Suburban Meadows.” He has pledged to reduce his carbon footprint by traveling less, so Benjamin will join us live on a big screen, where he will present and answer questions. His presentation will discuss the potential for urban natural habitats to positively impact the environment. He will explore how to turn your lawn into a meadow garden by showing how to select plants, prepare the site for planting, and install and manage your meadow.
Wrapping up our second day of sessions will be Dr. David Michener, who will join us in person at Interlochen. His presentation is called “All our Kin—Reframing our Respect for Gardens, Living Collections, and Landscapes to Become Essential Life Centers.” Dr. Michener will discuss his work to reframe native plants and communities in a way to build awareness of and increase engagement in Tribal sovereignty and sustainability. He is a curator at the University of Michigan Matthaei Botanical Gardens and Nichols Arboretum, and in the fall of 2023, became the Midwest co-leader (alongside Jennifer Gauthier of the College of the Menominee Nation) of a $30,000,000 research grant with the International Center for Braiding Indigenous Knowledges and Science based at University of Massachusetts.
In-between these keynote speakers are many options for further learning, including breakout sessions , workshops, and tours . For a full list of these options, please visit the website at https://www.canr.msu.edu/master_gardener_volunteer_program/master_gardener_conference/schedule. Interlochen Center for the Arts will not only provide a stunning backdrop for our conference but will contribute to our sustainability education. Tours of their gardens, botanical lab, apiary and compost facility will showcase sustainable practices participants can bring home to their own gardens and home.
Accommodations for attendees are available right on the beautiful Interlochen campus. Attendees can immerse themselves in the retreat-like atmosphere of the campus by staying onsite. Several different lodging options will be available, ranging from dorm rooms ($60+), hotel rooms ($99+), studios ($130+), cottages ($175+) and houses ($450). Due to limited space at the Interlochen Center for the Arts, we encourage attendees to share lodging accommodations where possible or forego lodging if you are local. Learn more about accommodations on the website: https://www.canr.msu.edu/master_gardener_volunteer_program/master_gardener_conference/lodging
In addition to the classes, workshops and tours on site at Interlochen, many tours have been arranged for conference attendees before and after the conference. On the Thursday before the conference, participants can choose between a Lunch and Learn at Pine Hill Nursery, a tour of the Otsego Conservation District Demo Gardens, a tour of a Grand Traverse Regional Land Conservancy preserve, or a cooking class at Interlochen Center for the Arts. Sunday’s options include the Lavender Hill Farm tour, a tour of the Botanic Garden at Historic Barns Park, or a tour of the MSU Northwest Michigan Horticultural Research Center to learn about cherry and apple research being done by MSU. Learn more about these activities on the website: https://www.canr.msu.edu/master_gardener_volunteer_program/master_gardener_conference/pre-and-post-events
Registration is $325 per person until July 15 (increases to $350 on July 16) and will include:
- Three world-class keynote presentations
- A combination of five educational breakout sessions or three hands-on workshops
- Access to the Garden Marketplace
- One breakfast
- Two lunches
- A seat at the Celebration Dinner
- A tranquil, retreat-like setting where you can enjoy the venue, while connecting with fellow gardening enthusiasts.

7 role players who will make or break Cowboys season

A second-half surge allowed the Dallas Cowboys to surpass the Philadelphia Eagles in 2023 and steal the NFC East crown. They were one-and-done in the playoffs, which dampened the joy from that divisional title, and now enter 2024 with more questions than answers.
Most of the attention is being paid to Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb — and with good reason. They're each entering the final year of their respective deals, and Lamb is currently holding out.
Dallas knows they'll both do their part, assuming they don't push Lamb out the door, but the team's success — or failure — in 2024 will come down to role players.
Here, we identify seven players who can make or break the season.
Markquese Bell, Safety
![Dallas Cowboys, Markquese Bell Dallas Cowboys, Markquese Bell](https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/c_crop,w_6945,h_3906,x_0,y_77/c_fill,w_620,ar_16:9,f_auto,q_auto,g_auto/images/ImagnImages/mmsport/cowboys_country/01j1x2pexam6vbp4455n.jpg)
Dan Quinn moved Markquese Bell to linebacker last season out of necessity. The loss of DeMarvion Overshown left them thin, and it only got worse when Leighton Vander Esch went down with a neck injury.
Bell responded well with 94 tackles but couldn't do enough against the run when the Cowboys lost to the Green Bay Packers in the postseason.
Thankfully, Bell is moving back to safety under Mike Zimmer, and that's a win for him and the Cowboys. Bell proved he's capable in coverage and has no problem playing with physicality. With Jayron Kearse gone, they're going to need someone to play that enforcer role as a box safety. Donovon Wilson does his part, but the defense was elite when Wilson, Kearse, and Malik Hooker were all playing well together.
If Bell can assume that role and perform at the same level as in 2023, the defense could be just as impressive again.
Jalen Tolbert, Wide Receiver
![Dallas Cowboys, Jalen Tolbert Dallas Cowboys, Jalen Tolbert](https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/c_crop,w_4308,h_2423,x_0,y_86/c_fill,w_620,ar_16:9,f_auto,q_auto,g_auto/images/ImagnImages/mmsport/cowboys_country/01j1x2kwczj9qm3408wh.jpg)
Michael Gallup was released this offseason and signed with the Las Vegas Raiders. His final outing was impressive, as he had 103 yards on six receptions in their lone playoff game, but it was the right call to move on. Dak Prescott forced the ball to him too often, and if Gallup wasn't making circus catches the way he did early in his career, it would have led to far too many stalled drives.
The problem is that there's not a lot of proven depth behind CeeDee Lamb and Brandin Cooks. The best option to take on the WR3 role is Jalen Tolbert, who has just 24 career receptions in two years. He has been playing well during offseason workouts, but he has to carry that into the regular season.
Tolbert will have competition in the form of Jalen Brooks and rookie Ryan Flournoy, but he was a third-round pick for a reason. The talent is there; now is the time for him to capitalize on it.
Jourdan Lewis, Cornerback
![Dallas Cowboys, Jourdan Lewis Dallas Cowboys, Jourdan Lewis](https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/c_crop,w_4535,h_2550,x_0,y_111/c_fill,w_620,ar_16:9,f_auto,q_auto,g_auto/images/ImagnImages/mmsport/cowboys_country/01j1x2j06nmg50twwavy.jpg)
Arguably the most underrated player on the roster , Jourdan Lewis overcame a terrible foot injury in 2022 and played at a high level in 2023. There were calls for him to be traded in the offseason, but when Trevon Diggs tore his ACL in Week 3, the front office was proven right to hang onto him.
Lewis didn't catch fire right out of the gate, but once he felt fully healthy, he was able to make some key plays. As a slot cornerback, he was integral in the win over the Seattle Seahawks in Week 13 and had six tackles, an interception, and two pass defenses in their one-point win over the Detroit Lions in Week 17.
Entering his eighth season in the NFL, Lewis signed a team-friendly one-year deal and is expected to be the third cornerback again. If he can continue to play as he did down the stretch, Mike Zimmer's defense will be in great shape.
Terence Steele, Right Tackle
![Terence Steele, Dallas Cowboys Terence Steele, Dallas Cowboys](https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/c_crop,w_7580,h_4263,x_0,y_303/c_fill,w_620,ar_16:9,f_auto,q_auto,g_auto/images/ImagnImages/mmsport/cowboys_country/01j1x2etk2jge5ad42js.jpg)
It's not often that a starting right tackle is considered a 'role player,' but Terence Steele falls into this category. Undrafted out of Texas Tech in 2020, Steele developed into an excellent starter, leading to the release of La'el Collins.
Despite coming off a torn ACL, he was signed to a massive extension ahead of the 2023 season.
Steele struggled mightily in the first year of his $86.8 million contract, with PFF assigning 54 pressures, 12 quarterback hits, and eight sacks against him.

Hopefully, Steele will be more comfortable with a full year under his belt following the ACL surgery. They don't need him to play at an All-Pro level, but if he resembles a turnstile again in 2024, it's going to be a tough season for Dak Prescott.
KaVontae Turpin, Receiver/Returner
![Dallas Cowboys, KaVontae Turpin Dallas Cowboys, KaVontae Turpin](https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/c_crop,w_8192,h_4608,x_0,y_128/c_fill,w_620,ar_16:9,f_auto,q_auto,g_auto/images/ImagnImages/mmsport/cowboys_country/01j1x29q68fwb50dd57g.jpg)
KaVontae Turpin was used sparingly on offense but delivered whenever called upon. He had 11 receptions for 110 yards with a touchdown and added 127 yards on 12 rushes with three more trips across the goal line. His 10.3 yard-per-touch average and four total touchdowns were helpful, and the Cowboys can use more explosion from him on offense in 2024.
Turpin's real impact is felt in the return game. A Pro Bowler in 2022, he had 303 yards on punt returns and 508 on kick returns. Those numbers dropped dramatically in 2023 with 79 yards on punts and 292 on kickoffs (although his average on kick returns did increase from 24.2 to 29.2).
Looking ahead to 2024, his role as a returner will be more important than ever. With the NFL adopting new rules in the return game, Turpin's speed and ability to cut through holes in a hurry could help them win the field position battle. Considering their questions at wide receiver and running back, that could make a major difference.
Cooper Beebe, Center
![Dallas Cowboys, Cooper Beebe Dallas Cowboys, Cooper Beebe](https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/c_crop,w_2738,h_1540,x_0,y_103/c_fill,w_620,ar_16:9,f_auto,q_auto,g_auto/images/ImagnImages/mmsport/cowboys_country/01j1x2bjqx586680c56r.jpg)
Another projected starter on the offensive line, Cooper Beebe is making the move from guard at Kansas State to center in the NFL. By all accounts, he's doing an excellent job learning the position and has already been making adjustments at the line.
Tyler Biadasz was an underrated player during his tenure and leaves some big shoes for Beebe to fill. If he can play close to the level Biadasz did, it will do wonders for Dak Prescott. If not, the offense will have a hard time sustaining drives.
Ezekiel Elliott, Running Back
![Dallas Cowboys, Ezekiel Elliott Dallas Cowboys, Ezekiel Elliott](https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/c_crop,w_2738,h_1540,x_0,y_122/c_fill,w_620,ar_16:9,f_auto,q_auto,g_auto/images/ImagnImages/mmsport/cowboys_country/01j1x2dkmv29etp9mqrx.jpg)
There was a time when Ezekiel Elliott was the focal point of the Dallas offense but that's no longer the case. The fourth overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft isn't the player he once was but the Cowboys are going to be relying heavily on him in 2024.
Elliott finished with 955 yards from scrimmage and five touchdowns with the New England Patriots last year before returning to Dallas. He's unlikely to get 255 touches as he did with the Pats but he will be used in key situations — such as near the goal line and on third-and-short.
Dallas doesn't need him to have massive numbers but they need him to come through in the short-yardage situations. He did this in 2022, scoring 12 touchdowns on the ground and converting 52 first-downs. If he can have success in this area again, the offense might be able to find success.
