PointsBetting is an innovative new style of betting and it’s definitely the thing that makes PointsBet stand out the most.

The first thing to understand is that it has higher risk than traditional betting but also has the potential for bigger payouts.

While traditional bets have a predetermined stake and predetermined payout, with PointsBetting the amount you win or the amount you lose depends on the result of the game – how “right” or “wrong” you are.

For example, imagine you bet $10 on the New Orleans Saints with these odds:

New Orleans Saints -10 (-110)

Atlanta Falcons +10 (-110)

With a fixed odds bet, you would win the same whether the Saints won by 11 points or 30 points, and lose the same whether they lost the game, or won by 9 or less.

With PointsBetting, you win more if your team beats the spread by a lot, and you lose more if your team fails by a large margin to cover the spread.

In our example, if the Saints beat the spread by 1 point, you will 1X your bet ($10). If they beat the spread by 5, you will win 5X your bet ($50).

However, if they come up 3 points below the spread, you will be liable for 3X your stake ($30). And, if there is a big upset and the Falcons win by 5 points, you would liable for a huge 15X your stake ($150).

As you can see, the risk is much higher than with fixed odds betting but so is the potential reward.

Another feature that is unique at PointsBet as they present it differently than most sportsbooks. The Next Up menu is a complete list of events and games starting soon, which you can filter down to your favorite sport. Next to each event/game is a live countdown timer showing you how long until it begins. 

This is a great way to find upcoming events to get some action on.

Live Same-Game Parlay

We love this feature! And PointsBet is the only sports betting provider in the entire North American market that offers it. 

The live same-game parlay feature allows you to build an SGP while the game is happening. While standard same-game parlays are built pre-game, live same-game parlays allow you to react to the action as it is happening, adding another huge layer of excitement to the live betting experience.

If you’re into live betting and/or same-game parlays, this feature alone is worth signing up with PointsBet for.

Live Betting

Sports gamblers will find the live betting or in-game betting feature at PointsBet one of the industry's best. It functions fast, is simple to navigate, and placing bets is easy—no need to worry about your wager not being placed because the processing took too long. 

One thing that will improve the PointsBet live betting platform is the growth of PointsBet live-streaming. The live-streaming option is minimal at PointsBet right now, but it is growing. The more improvements it makes here, the more exciting live betting will be at PointsBet.

Cash out is an important feature that all sports betting providers should have. Users can cash out their bets early when they are winning big, or if things are not going well, cash out and limit their losses. 

We were very impressed with PointsBet’s cash out experience. During our testing, we were able to cash out of our bets very quickly and with no issues. Sometimes this experience can be clunky as odds change and providers try to keep up with the action, but all of our cashed out bets at PointsBet went through without a hitch.

The sportsbook also offers partial cash out , which allows users to cash out just a portion of their bet while letting the rest ride. This is a great option to collect a portion of your winnings early or rescue some of your stake from a losing bet.

PointsBet Casino

PointsBet users can also play in the PointsBet casino where legal (New Jersey, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Michigan). 

You can use the same account information for the PointsBet casino, but if using mobile you will need to download the PointsBet casino app, which like the sportsbook app, is available for Android and iOS users.

As this is a sportsbook review, we won’t go into too much detail here about the casino. But we did have a go in there during our testing and we were all satisfied with the variety of games on offer and the overall experience. The depositing and withdrawing experience is a dealbreaker for many users. Players want a variety of banking options, no fees, and fast payouts.

These are the things we test when we are reviewing any sportsbook, and here are our findings for PointsBet.

Deposit Options

It is worth noting that, like most sportsbooks, the majority of PointsBet deposit methods are instant . The only one that is not is online banking which, on some occasions, can take up to three days. However, each time we used this deposit method it was instant, so it seems rare that it takes longer.

Also, deposit minimums at PointsBet are only $5, but it can sometimes be higher due to state regulations. Some states require higher deposit minimums; in those cases, the PointsBet minimum deposit will be as low as the state allows.

Withdrawal Options

We found withdrawing funds straight-forward and quick . We did not run into any delays or errors that required assistance from customer support.

What keeps odds and lines from getting a perfect 10 is that you rarely find odds boosts from PointsBet. Their standard odds are as good as anyone, but it would be nice to see more boosts to help existing bettors increase their potential profits.

Security: ⭐ 4.5/5

It is an underrated category. Security is essential, as sports bettors will share personal and banking information when signing up and using a sportsbook. All WSN-recommended sportsbooks are legal and licensed . 

PointsBet does an excellent job protecting all of its users with state-of-the-art 128-bit SSL tech on their desktop website and mobile app. That, and their geolocation abilities to ensure users are located in a legal state when placing wagers, PointsBet is above board, so to speak. 

Off-shore books are messy, and you need protections outside what the sportsbook says they are offering. PointsBet not only offers a high level of security but in each state where they are licensed, they must abide by local rules and regulations. 

With that said, users should have no concerns using PointsBet security-wise.

Customer support at PointsBet is solid, and through our personal use of their customer support, we found them to be helpful and resolve issues fairly quickly.

During our testing we were very satisfied with the app. It is fast, functions well, and has logical navigation, making it easy to get from one place to another within the app. That includes the all-important live betting feature, which is exceptional function-wise.

We did not notice any missing features or limited functionality when compared to the website, which we were very happy about. We were able to find account information, promotions, various betting markets by sports, and much more with ease. 

Overall, the PointsBet app may not be flashy or full of glitz and glamour, but it is a high-caliber sports betting app that we had a great experience with.

The available sports markets vary from state to state, so you might not have access to all of the above listed sports based on where you place your bets. 

Online Betting Experience

PointsBet Sportsbook has plenty of fans – but even its most ardent supporters would agree that the site could use a little sprucing. The desktop version features plenty of wasted space, while the app has more redeeming aesthetic qualities but also boasts issues that will have some players tearing their hair out.

Put together the best elements of the desktop and mobile experience and you have an app that would compete favorably with the industry leaders in terms of interface quality and ease of use. But that’s not the case here – and I have to ding PointsBet for that reason.

Website Experience

PointsBet provides a decent — but not great — desktop experience for users.

First, what I like: The odds are really easy to read, whether you’re perusing the main odds menu in the middle of the screen or pouring over your betting card (which remains hidden until you select an initial game). The font sizes for both are larger than the industry standard, which matters for players who aren’t into squint-reading their betting choices.

Unfortunately, this layout also leaves me wanting.

While most desktop sites feature a handy sports menu on the left-hand side, PointsBet has opted to leave this blank; you’ll need to click the hamburger menu in the top-left corner to access the list of sports, boosts and promos. Players also need to select their odds and then add that play to their betting card (the initial click opens a prompt at the bottom of the screen). Why not do what others do and allow players to add games to their card with one click?

Give full credit to PointsBet for going with a simple design – but in this case, it might actually be too simple, resulting in a lot of empty space on the screen. Give us a visible sports menu!

Mobile Betting and Betting App

A mobile-first mentality seems to be the theme with the PointsBet design.

The mobile app layout is much smoother than the desktop. However, it doesn’t save login info or offer Face ID or a PIN number. Users need to manually log in after 10 minutes of no activity, which is a drawback for those betting in-game specifically that want to jump on a bet quickly while watching a game. 

That said, PointsBet has an impressive rating of 4.8 out of 5 based on nearly 24,000 reviews on the App Store. That’s among the highest ratings of any U.S.-based sports betting site, and speaks to the sustained popularity of the app among the general sports betting public.

Live Betting

PointsBet does feature live betting and streaming for select sports. This is an area PointsBet excels in as it offers one of the broadest selections of in-game bets and props in the industry. You can bet on super-specific bets like quarterback completion percentages and at exactly what second the first touchdown will be scored in a game.

PointsBet is hoping that its in-play betting product will earn it a 10% market share in every state it operates, according to a 2021 quarterly earnings report. Of course, with many of the industry’s big names having improved their in-play experiences, PointsBet faces an uphill battle there.

Casino, Poker, & Other Gaming Options

PointsBet offers casino games in three states: Michigan , West Virginia and New Jersey . And while you’re likely to see PointsBet continue to innovate on the sports betting side of the ledger, its casino offering feels like a table-stakes proposition that doesn’t really separate itself from a wide range of competitors in each of those states.

Slot games can be sorted by All, Featured, New, Exclusive, with standard offerings across all menus. PointsBet offers 83 slot games to Michigan residents, 66 to those who live in New Jersey and just 11 for West Virginians. Blah. 

PointsBet also offers a token number of live games like Baccarat, blackjack and roulette, along with a handful of video poker options.

PointsBet History

PointsBet is a corporate bookmaker listed on the Australian Stock Exchange with operations in Australia, the United States, Canada, and Ireland. They joined the U.S. sports betting market shortly after PASPA was repealed, becoming the ninth sportsbook to operate in the state of New Jersey in January 2019.

They offer one of the deepest slates of pre-game and in-play betting options in the world, thanks to owning and controlling its technology end-to-end. Their innovative nature shows that they don’t want to just be another book where you place typical bets. PointsBet has been able to build up a vast customer base by providing a terrific customer experience, but their promotions are the best in the industry as well.

Iowa was the next state on PointsBet’s radar, and their second online sportsbook in the United States was launched in the Hawkeye State. PointsBet was the fourth company to launch a mobile sportsbook in Iowa, and it have emerged as a major player in that state.

PointsBet has formed a partnership with the Catfish Bend Casino in Burlington, and PointsBet also offers retail sports betting at this location.

PointsBet Sportsbook launched in the state of Indiana in March 2020 after the company was able to form a partnership with Penn National Gaming. PointsBet has been unable to launch retail sports betting in Indiana, but their online sportsbook has been doing well. 

In the state of Colorado, PointsBet has partnered with the Double Eagle Hotel and Casino to provide both retail and online sports betting. PointsBet was one of the first sportsbooks to launch in Colorado.

PointsBet has also announced plans to offer sports betting in both Illinois and Michigan, and these sportsbooks could be up and running by the end of 2020. 

Even though PointsBet Sportsbook has become extremely popular since joining the US market, their banking options are not up to par with some of their competitors. There are a number of deposit options available in the state of New Jersey, but all of those options aren’t available elsewhere.

PointsBet currently lists five deposit options to their customers in New Jersey, with online banking being one of the featured options. This allows customers to link their bank account with their sports betting accounts to allow for quick and easy transactions.

An ACH/echeck and a credit card is another acceptable form of payment for customers in New Jersey. PointsBet Sportsbook does charge a small fee for deposits depending on the amount that is being paid.

Online banking is the only featured deposit method for customers in Indiana, but PointsBet will accept other forms of payment. Credit/debit cards or ACH/echeck payments are also accepted by the company in the Hoosier State.

In Iowa and Colorado, customers are limited to just two deposit options. Customers in those states can use a credit/debit card, or they can submit an ACH/echeck. Online banking is not up and running yet, but that will change as time goes on. 

PointsBet Sportsbook is an international company, and that has helped them feature some of the top international sports and leagues on their site. Not only does PointsBet feature international competition, but they offer a wide range of betting on the top sports in America as well.

The gaming catalog at PointsBet is much smaller than some of its competitors. However, the PointsBet Sportsbook is the main attraction here. It makes perfect sense that the sportsbook is filled with a wide range of sports and different markets.

However, we’ve come to expect more from online gambling sites, especially the ones operating in NJ, WV, MI, and PA. Due to the lack of more gaming options, we gave the site a  4 out of 5 for this section in our PointsBet USA review.

During our test, we used our smartphone for the app and a laptop for the desktop site. Both worked without any faults, which could be because there was not much loading for the platform to perform. Disappearing money withdrawals

We opted for e-transfer in withdrawing some of our funds. This amount was deducted from our account, but never credited to our bank account. When we emailed them about it, no response at all. Be careful putting your money into this company. You will lose your money not only in losing bets, but in disappearing bank transfers.

Thanks for those free $1 bets!

You guys are far better than the blue one (Fan Dual) and just a bit worse than the green one (Draft Kings) to a Chicago guy that mostly does $1-10 bets, and often on the team he hates…just so he is bought “free lunch” when his team looses. Your Free $1 or 2 bets have yielded me about the same as the the constant “boost” to my winnings I get at Draft kings. Also I don’t think your iPad so lets me rotate sideways yet…still forced to hold it the long way!

I'm enjoying the betting experience but the login experience is poor.

I'm enjoying the betting experience with Pointsbet. However, I'm not enjoying the login experience with my iPhone. I've talked to other and they have the same issue. A friend of mine closed his account with PB because of this. Every time I sign in, it asks if I want to enable Face ID, then, it asks if I want to enable a pin code. I've tried say yes to both, yes to one and not other. No combination works. It's pretty frustrating especially when all other platforms are seamless login experience. Thanks.

I like that navigating through the app…

I like that navigating through the app is quicker than most other sportsbook apps. I like the pointsbetting option, also. I don't like the lag in the live betting. Many times, I've clicked on a bet, entered my bet amount, hit submit, hit confirm and then the line has changed dramatically. I had to un-check the "auto accept line changes" button. Also, I wish I could add my bets to my bet slip and have the ability to click or un-click certain bets to make a parlay. BetMGM has this option and I like it. On PointsBet, I have to delete the bets from my bet slip completely and then go back and find the game again to add it back for a different parlay. I hope that makes sense.

Pros: Really nice interface for the most part. Easy to place bets. Solid customer support service. Quick money in and quick money out. Cons: Terrible teaser odds on 6 pt. Teasers! Most places -120 not -140. Much better odds at other books. Makes it impossible for any long term winning. Not enough bet variety. I hear bets at other books in podcasts that I cannot make at Pointsbet. Occasionally hard to tell what a promotional bet's terms are. When you're out of state you cannot even look at your account. Of course you can't bet but you can't even login to see what bets you have placed. Annoying.

Don’t download. Doesn’t show every player until actual game time. NO LONGER can half time bet, they’re always under maintenance, placing bets sometimes aren’t always accepted and they’ll take your money and refund it to your balance in 30 minutes (so basically could’ve won the bet you made but a “validation error” happened” FANDUEL and MGM and ESPNBET are way better

I received a notification of a free bet…

I received a notification of a free bet and it wasn't there on Saturday. Also the free bets went from $2 to $1 after I hit a couple. Otherwise I think Pointsbet is the best sports betting app.

We then checked out the NBA futures bets to see who posted the best odds for the Los Angeles Lakers to win the 2023 NBA Finals. PointsBet was tied with BetMGM as having less favorable odds compared to that of Caesars and especially DraftKings Sportsbook .

Overall, we found that PointsBet has very competitive pre-event moneyline and point spread odds. However, when it comes to futures betting, they often post less favorable odds compared to their competitors.

As previously mentioned, not only are we without complaints as it pertains to the desktop experience, but we’re wholeheartedly impressed. While PointsBet isn’t considered a heavyweight in the online sports betting industry like say DraftKings and FanDuel , they present as one with their website and mobile app .

The desktop version of PointsBet is essentially laid out the exact same way as the mobile app, which is a good thing. Finding promotions, your favorite sports and your bets take little to no effort as everything is displayed just how you’d want it.

While even some of the best sportsbooks in Michigan experience a dropoff in maneuverability and/or fluidity between the desktop version and the mobile app, PointsBet MI does not. The desktop version runs just as smoothly as the mobile app—and we’re sure that you’ll love navigating the site.

Imagine the Golden State Warriors and Milwaukee Bucks will square off tonight, and PointsBet has set the total at 230 points . A PointsBet customer decides to take the over for $10 per point .

In this example, imagine the Cowboys go on to win the game by two touchdowns, covering the spread by 5.5 points. The bettor would receive a $55 payout on their original $10 wager.

On the other hand, if the Cowboys fail to cover the spread or lose outright, the bettor would lose $10 x the number of points by which the Cowboys missed the spread.

One area where PointsBet trails behind the pack is payouts. There are only a limited number of withdrawal options, but so long as bettors have a checking account or PayPal, they should be covered.

• Online Banking : This method allows bettors to withdraw funds via a secure banking portal. The only prerequiste is that bettors must have a valid checking account at a listed bank. It typically takes between 1-3 days for withdrawn funds to hit your account. Over 2,000 eligible banks
• ACH/eCheck via VIP Preferred : Receive funds through a linked VIP Preferred ACH/eCheck account. The turnaround time is slightly slower than online banking, roughly 2-4 days.

However, if an issue needs to get escalated to management, the process slows down dramatically and occasionally goes completely unresolved. As good as the staff is, they’re still obviously a bit wet behind the ears and have difficulty with tough issues.

PointsBet launched its Colorado sports betting app and website in November 2020 via a licensing agreement with Double Eagle Hotel and Casino. PointsBet initially planned to open a retail sportsbook in Colorado, but those plans never materialized, and PointsBet remained online-only operator until it closed permanently following its acquisition by Fanatics Sportsbook.

PointsBet also had a wide-ranging partnership with the University of Colorado, but the two parted ways in 2023 after the American Gaming Association updated its responsible gambling marketing code to prohibit partnership agreements with colleges.

PointsBet Illinois (Closed)

• Land-Based Partner: Hawthorne Race Course

PointsBet launched in Illinois after reaching a partnership with Hawthorne Race Course just outside of Chicago. The PointsBet-Hawthorne deal involved online betting, a mobile betting app, and four retail sportsbooks in the Chicago area.

State regulators approved PointsBet for an Illinois sports betting license in July 2020, clearing the way for its launch two months later. PointsBet NJ closed and transferred all customer accounts to Fanatics Sportsbook in April 2024.

PointsBet Indiana (Closed)

• Land-Based Partner: Hollywood Casino Lawrenceburg

PointsBet came to Indiana through its licensing partnership agreement with Penn Entertainment, the parent company of Hollywood Casino Lawrenceburg. PointsBet launched in March 2020 after receiving an Indiana sports betting license from the Gaming Commission.

PointsBet shuttered its Indiana operations in February 2024 and automatically transferred all customer account information and balances to Fanatics Sportsbook.

PointsBet Iowa (Closed)

• Offerings: Closed
• Land-Based Partner: Catfish Bend

Catfish Bend Casino offered online sports betting in Iowa and manage a retail sportsbook for casino guests through an agreement with Catfish Bend Casino.

PointsBet Sportsbook became Fanatics Sportsbook in February 2024, with all customer accounts and balances automatically transferring to the new platform.

PointsBet Kansas (Closed)

• Land-Based Partner: Kansas Crossing Casino

PointsBet secured access to the Kansas sports betting market through a partnership with Kansas Crossing Casino in the southeastern part of the state. The agreement left open the possibility of PointsBet operating a retail sportsbook at Kansas Crossing Casino, but Caesars Sportsbook ended up taking that responsibility.

PointsBet Kansas rebranded to Fanatics Sportsbook on March 28 th , 2024, and transferred all existing customers’ account balances and login information to the Fanatics Sportsbook app.

PointsBet Louisiana (Closed)

• Land-Based Partner: PENN Entertainment

PointsBet qualified for a Louisiana online sports betting license through its partnership with Penn Entertainment, the parent company of numerous casinos in the region.

The agreement made PointsBet eligible for an online betting license but did not open any opportunities for a retail sportsbook at PNG’s Louisiana properties. As a result, PointsBet offered online betting exclusively in Louisiana until it closed following the Fanatics acquisition.

PointsBet Maryland (Closed)

• Land-Based Partner: Riverboat on the Potomac

PointsBet acquired a Maryland sports betting license by partnering with Riverboat on the Potomac for online wagering and a retail sportsbook. The Riverboat on the Potomac sportsbook opened in September 2022, and the PointsBet Maryland app launched two months later.

PointsBet Michigan (Closed)

• Land-Based Partner: Northern Waters Casino Resort

PointsBet came to Michigan through a deal with the Lac Vieux Desert Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians, who operate the Northern Waters Casino Resort in Watersmeet.

PointsBet further established itself in the Michigan sports betting market by reaching an agreement with the MLB’s Detroit Tigers to become the team’s official gaming partner. With the partnership in place, PointsBet gained branding at Comerica Park, on the Detroit Tigers Radio Network, and on the team’s other digital properties.

More importantly for customers, the deal provided access to “unique experiences, content, promotions and more, in and around Comerica Park.”

PointsBet New Jersey (Closed)

• Land-Based Partner: Meadowlands Racetrack

PointsBet offered legal online sports betting in New Jersey through a licensing agreement with Meadowlands Racetrack (now Meadowlands Racing & Gaming). Shortly after launching its New Jersey online betting app, PointsBet announced a partnership with Topgolf, enabling crossover promos exclusive to NJ customers.

PointsBet NJ permanently closed in May 2024, and all customer accounts migrated to Fanatics Sportsbook.

PointsBet New York (Closed)

• Land-Based Partner: Tioga Downs

PointsBet secured its place in the New York sports betting market through a deal with Tioga Downs Casino Resort. They finalized the deal before New York had even legalized online betting, just to be ready ahead of time.

After its purchase by Fanatics Betting & Gaming, PointsBet NY transferred all customers’ account information and balances to Fanatics Sportsbook.

PointsBet Ohio (Closed)

The PointsBet app operated on a license supplied by PENN Entertainment, which owns several Ohio casinos. PointsBet did not operate any Ohio sportsbooks , so it remained an online-exclusive operator until it was acquired by Fanatics Betting & Gaming.

PointsBet Pennsylvania (Closed)

PointsBet offered online sports betting in Pennsylvania through its agreement with PENN Entertainment.

Per the agreement, PointsBet Sportsbook partnered with one of PENN’s Pennsylvania properties (Hollywood Casino York) as required by state law to offer online sports betting and gambling.

Although PointsBet never operated any retail sportsbooks in Pennsylvania, it often launched region-targeted promos for local fans involving hometown teams like the Pittsburgh Steelers and Philadelphia Eagles.

PointsBet Virginia (Closed)

• Land-Based Partner: Colonial Downs

The Virginia Lottery issued an online sports betting license to PointsBet in late 2021, clearing the way for its December launch. PointsBet qualified for its Virginia sports betting license by partnering with Colonial Downs, but it did not operate a retail sportsbook at the track.

PointsBet West Virginia (Closed)

PointsBet Partnerships

PointsBet has aggressively forged partnerships with leagues, media companies, and celebrity brand ambassadors.

PointsBet NBC Partnership

PointsBet further entrenched itself in the US market by forming a partnership with NBC Sports in August 2020. The deal made PointsBet the official betting partner of NBC Sports in return for NBC Universal taking a 4.9% stake in PointsBet with the option to increase its stake to 25%.

Under the terms of the PointsBet NBC partnership, PointsBet receives marketing access across NBC Sports’ entire portfolio of sports broadcasting, news, and analysis platforms. The considerable portfolio includes regional NBC networks that broadcast 2,200+ events per year, digital media, the NBC Sports Predictor app, and more.

PointsBet Celebrity Brand Ambassadors

PointsBet has also inked several celebrity partnerships. Its first was signing NBA legend Allen Iverson as its brand ambassador to star in ads and appear prominently on the PointsBet website.

In July 2021, PointsBet came to terms with Drew Brees to become a brand ambassador. Brees is the NFL’s all-time passing leader and the MVP of Super Bowl XLIV. He’s been depicted in PointsBet commercials and promotions.

In January 2021, PointsBet added Paige Spiranac to its roster. Spiranac is a highly influential golf personality with over 3 million Instagram followers. She is featured in a multitude of PointsBet’s social media videos and is the queen of flipping coins to pick winners.

Expert Opinion: Is PointsBet Legit?

PointsBet was a reputable online sportsbook, but it is no longer operational following its acquisition by Fanatics Betting & Gaming. As PointsBet wound down its US operations, customers’ account balances remained secure and accessible.

The firm originates from Australia but maintained a US headquarters in Denver and recruited locally to strengthen ties with local fanbases. When PointsBet was live in the United States, customers could expect to find frequent promotions tied to hometown teams, including the occasional refund of wagers lost due to poor refereeing or exceptionally bad luck.

In summary, PointsBet was safe and legitimate. Its unique PointsBetting markets offered a welcome change of pace, but its traditional sports betting options were also surprisingly diverse.
