Essay on Healthy Lifestyle

The top secret of being physically fit is adopting a healthy lifestyle. A healthy lifestyle includes regular exercise, a healthy diet, taking good care of self, healthy sleep habits, and having a physically active daily routine. Lifestyle is the most prevailing factor that affects one’s fitness level. A person leading a sedentary lifestyle has a low fitness level whereas living a healthier life not only makes a person fit but also extends life. Good health has a direct impact on our personality. A person with a good and healthy lifestyle is generally more confident, self-assured, sociable, and energetic.

A good and healthy lifestyle allows one to relish and savor all the pleasures in life without any complications. Even all the wealth is less valuable when compared to sound health. Having all the luxuries in the world does not fulfill its purpose when one is continuously ill, depressed, or suffering from a significant health complication. A healthy person has a clear and calm perception of everything without prejudice. His actions and decisions are more practical and logical and are hence more successful in life.

A good habit is a key factor for a healthy lifestyle. To maintain a stable body and mind, one needs to inculcate good habits. Waking up early in the morning, regularly exercising or a good morning walk helps to keep our body energetic and refresh our mind. Maintaining a balanced and nutritious diet throughout the day is vital for maintaining a good lifestyle. Too much indulgence in alcohol or smoking excessively is not at all appropriate for a healthy lifestyle.

Self-Discipline

Self-discipline is important for maintaining a good lifestyle. When we are self-disciplined then we are more organized and regular in maintaining good health. A disciplined life is a regulated life. A man without discipline is a ship without a rudder. Discipline needs self-control. One who cannot control himself can seldom control others. The level of discipline and perseverance largely determines a person’s success. Self-discipline is the act of disciplining one’s own feelings, desires, etc. especially with the intention of improving oneself. It strengthens our willpower. The stronger our will power the positive will be our decision. It enables us to conquer our own self.

Punctuality

Punctuality is the habit of doing things on time. It is the characteristic of every successful person and everyone must observe punctuality in order to win success in life. Punctuality is necessary for maintaining a healthy lifestyle. It should become a habit with us. A punctual person is able to fulfill all his responsibilities and hence is treated with respect in society. It is needed in every walk of life.

Diet is an important component for overall fitness and works best in combination with exercise. A balanced diet and exercise regularly help to maintain good health. It is necessary to reduce weight if one is overweight or obese, failing which one cannot be physically fit for long. For people with obesity, more exercise and a strict regime are necessary, preferably under guidance. There are many ways of making the diet healthier.

Use less sugar and salt while cooking food.

Use less oil while cooking. Avoid deep-frying as much as possible.

Eat more fruits daily. They provide more vitamins and minerals to our bodies.

Add sprouts of gram and moong dal to at least one meal in a day. Add fiber to your diet. Use whole grains instead of polished cereals. Eat lots of salad and yogurt.

Eat fermented food regularly. Fermented food contains many useful bacteria that help in the process of digestion.

Prevention of Lifestyle Diseases

By adopting a healthy lifestyle one can avoid lifestyle diseases. The following are some ways in which we can prevent lifestyle diseases.

Eat a balanced diet that contains important nutrients. One must include more fresh fruits and green vegetables in the diet. Refrain from eating junk food. Stay away from foods that contain large amounts of salt or sugar.

Exercise regularly. Spend more time outdoors and do activities such as walking, running, swimming, and cycling.

One must avoid overindulgence in alcohol, junk food, smoking, and addiction to drugs and medicines.

Avoid spending too much on modern gadgets like mobile phones, laptops, televisions, etc. Spend time on these gadgets for short intervals of time only.

Set a healthy sleeping routine for every day. Waking early in the morning and going to bed early at night should be a daily habit. Lead an active life.

Unhealthy Lifestyle

Bad food habits and an unhealthy lifestyle such as less or no physical activity may lead to several diseases like obesity, high blood pressure or hypertension, diabetes, anemia, and various heart diseases. An unhealthy lifestyle reduces productivity and creativity in a person. It also adversely affects moods and relationships. It leads to depression and anxiety in human beings.

Having a healthy lifestyle is all about choosing to live your life in the most healthy way possible. There are a few things you have to do to start living your life in this way, i.e., the healthy way. This means doing some amount of exercise daily, such as jogging, yoga, playing sports, etc. Adding to this, you must also have a balanced and nutritional diet with all the food groups. It would be best if you were taking the right amount of proteins, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, and fats to help you have a proper diet. Grouped with these two essential aspects (diet and exercise), a healthy person also maintains the same sleep cycle, which should consist of around 7-8 hours of sleep.

However, we must remember that a healthy lifestyle not only refers to our physical and mental health. Maintaining a balanced diet, exercising daily, and sleeping well are essential parts of a healthy lifestyle. But feeling happy is also a big part of a healthy lifestyle. To enable happiness, thinking positively is a must. When a person does not feel happy or good about themselves, they are not entirely healthy. Thus we must do our best to think positively so that we can feel happy rather than sad.

We have talked about what all entails a healthy life, so now we must speak of what all does not. There are several things that one must avoid in order to live a healthy lifestyle. These include the kind of practices and habits that are harmful to us and also to the people around us, i.e., society. Such practices and habits include gambling, smoking, drinking, illegal drugs, or any other things that can turn into an addiction. These habits are harmful to not only you but for all the people around you, as addiction causes unhealthy attitudes and behaviors. Other unhealthy practices include skipping meals and eating junk food.

The benefits of a healthy lifestyle are manifold: living a healthy life allows you to live longer, which means that you get to spend more time with your family. Exercising daily will enable you to release endorphins and helps you feel happier. Regular exercise also improves the health of your skin and hair, bettering your appearance as well. Healthy lifestyles also primarily reduce your risk of life-threatening diseases such as cancer, diabetes, etc. and also reduce your susceptibility to cardiac arrests.

The imperative of a healthy lifestyle, nutrition: the cornerstone of health.

A balanced diet is fundamental to maintaining good health. Consuming nutrient-rich foods, such as fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains, helps to strengthen the immune system and reduces the risk of chronic diseases. On the contrary, a diet high in processed foods and sugars can lead to obesity, diabetes, and heart disease.

Physical Activity: A Pillar of Wellness

Regular physical activity is another crucial aspect of a healthy lifestyle. Exercise enhances cardiovascular health, boosts mood, and improves cognitive function. It also aids in weight management and promotes better sleep. However, a sedentary lifestyle can lead to a host of health problems, including obesity and mental health disorders.

Sleep: The Forgotten Health Component

Adequate sleep is often overlooked in discussions about health, but it is as important as diet and exercise. Quality sleep helps in the body’s repair processes, enhances cognitive function, and improves mood. Conversely, chronic sleep deprivation can lead to serious health issues like heart disease and depression.

In conclusion, a healthy lifestyle is not a choice, but a necessity in today’s fast-paced world. Nowadays, many medical professionals, scientists, and the general public strive to raise awareness when it comes to healthy living due to many intensifying concerns, such as growing rates of obesity, cardiovascular diseases, and other issues. Healthy living can be described as the willingness to participate in the improvements of one’s physical as well as psychological well-being. Among the most important elements of a healthy lifestyle are proper nutrition, physical activity, weight, and healthy habits. In this sense, the combination of these elements, along with the motivation to improve one’s well-being, leads to many advantages.

Among the benefits that people might experience in their healthy lifestyle is the decreased rates of morbidity and mortality. According to the CDC, proper nutrition with the necessary supplements helps people maintain their weight in the normal range (CDC, n.d.). As a result, people who do not fall into the category of obesity will be less likely to suffer from cardiovascular disease, diabetes, or strokes (CDC, n.d.). As for bone structure, proper nutrition and regular exercise will additionally help maintain the elasticity of muscles and the strength of bones. Lastly, a required amount of nutrients will help individuals obtain a better immune system.

However, not every person is able to afford a healthy lifestyle. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, the organic food supply is limited, which contributes to its higher prices (FAO, n.d.). As a result, this is the restricting factor, preventing people from living a healthy life since organic food might be more expensive for good nutrition. Still, people might have other options, such as exercising, which does not necessarily require gyms. The impact of such approaches to one’s health might increase productivity and well-being due to energy levels that result from exercise and nutritious diet.

Paragraph on Healthy Lifestyle (200+ Words)

Modern life’s increased stress has been linked to various medical conditions, notably heart and neurological problems. Unhealthy eating habits driven by taste, such as consuming junk food, leave little time for proper nourishment. A balanced diet is crucial in reducing stress and promoting a healthy, fulfilling life. Thus, it is essential for individuals to recognize the significance of maintaining a healthy body and embracing a positive attitude towards work and life.

A healthy diet is key to maintaining or improving overall health. It should include essential nutrients like fluids, sufficient proteins, essential fatty acids, vitamins, minerals, and calories. Fresh fruits, salads, green leafy vegetables, milk, eggs, yogurt , and other nutritious foods should be consumed on schedule to support a healthy body. In addition to a proper diet, daily physical activities, adequate rest and sleep, cleanliness, a healthy environment, fresh air, water, and personal hygiene are essential for a healthy lifestyle.

Drinking an adequate amount of water, typically 7-8 glasses per day, is recommended. Sufficient water intake helps balance blood pressure and rapidly supplies vital nutrients to the body. Being physically fit and healthy enhances resistance to infections and diseases. Good health extends beyond the absence of illness or injury—it encompasses physical, mental, social, intellectual, and financial well-being. Optimal health is a fundamental requirement for a happy life and is nature’s greatest gift.

4 ways to embrace a healthy lifestyle

Embracing healthy lifestyle

Adopting a healthy lifestyle is more challenging than ever in today's fast-paced, digitally-driven world. However, making mindful choices about your lifestyle can significantly improve your quality of life and long-term health.

A healthy lifestyle is a daily commitment and, as women, we can lead our friends and family by promoting healthier habits throughout life. Here’s a guide to adopting a healthier lifestyle to reduce the risk of heart disease, cancer, depression and cognitive impairment.

1. Regular physical activity

Physical activity is a cornerstone of a healthy lifestyle. Exercise improves cardiovascular health, strengthens muscles and enhances flexibility. It also releases endorphins, which are natural mood lifters. Incorporate a mix of aerobic activities, such as walking, running or cycling, along with strength training exercises like weightlifting or yoga.

The American Heart Association recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity or 75 minutes of vigorous activity per week, combined with muscle-strengthening exercises on two or more days. Exercise should be an intentional, timed physical activity.

Be wary of the mindset “I don’t formally exercise, but I’m active.” While some people have physically demanding jobs, many overestimate their activity levels. Half of U.S. adults do not meet the minimum physical activity recommendations. On average, U.S. adults spend about seven hours a day on sedentary activities, eight hours on light activities and only 0.2 hours on moderate to vigorous activities.

Increased sedentary behavior is associated with worse health outcomes, such as weight gain, high blood pressure, cholesterol issues and elevated blood sugar levels. Being intentional about increasing moderate activity and reducing sedentary behavior is essential to maintaining health in today’s environment.

  • 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity per week: Moderate activities include brisk walking (2.4-4 mph or 1.5 miles in 30 minutes, though this should be individualized based on each person’s fitness level), biking, ballroom dancing, active yoga or water aerobics.
  • 75 minutes of vigorous activity per week: Vigorous activities include jogging/running, biking (typically over 10 mph), singles tennis or swimming laps.
  • Sedentary activity: This includes anything done in a sitting, lying or recumbent posture, such as sitting at a desk, computer work, watching TV and phone scrolling.

Easy tip: Trade one 30-minute TV show or phone scrolling session for a 30-minute walk.

Consistency in exercise is more important than intensity.

2. Diet and weight management

A balanced diet is fundamental to a healthy lifestyle. A healthy diet should emphasize vegetables, fruits, nuts, whole grains, lean proteins and fish. Minimize trans fats, red meat, processed meats, simple sugars, refined carbohydrates and sweetened beverages.

If you are overweight or obese, the goal should be to improve your health. Studies show that losing 5%-10% of your body weight can significantly improve blood pressure, blood sugar levels and cholesterol. It’s more important to lose 5%-10% of your weight and maintain that loss than to experience drastic weight loss followed by regain. Yo-yo dieting and weight cycling are linked to poor health outcomes.

To lose weight, the general recommendation is to reduce caloric intake. While a personalized diet plan is ideal, a typical recommendation for healthy weight loss is to reduce calories by about 500 kcal/day. This can often be achieved by limiting women to 1,200-1,500 kcal/day.

Again, consistency in diet and weight management is more important than intensity.

3. Tobacco cessation

Tobacco use is a leading cause of death, disability and disease in the U.S. Nearly one-third of heart disease deaths are attributed to tobacco use or secondhand smoke. Even low levels of tobacco use increase the risk of heart attack. While the long-term effects of electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) or e-cigarettes are not yet fully understood, they may increase the risk of heart and lung disease. In young adults with chronic e-cigarette use, there is an increase in oxidative stress and sympathetic stimulation, which are associated with poor long-term health outcomes.

4. Cardiovascular risk factors: Hypertension, diabetes and hyperlipidemia

It’s important to know your cardiovascular risk factors and discuss prevention strategies with your health care provider.

  • Blood pressure: Nearly half of U.S. adults have hypertension. Normal blood pressure is under 120/80, while hypertension is defined as blood pressure over 130/80.
  • Diabetes: The development and progression of diabetes are heavily influenced by diet, physical activity and weight. One-third of U.S. adults have prediabetes and are at significant risk of developing diabetes. Fasting blood sugar levels and/or hemoglobin A1C should be discussed with your health care provider, especially if you have a family history of diabetes or are overweight/obese.
  • Cholesterol: Know your cholesterol levels and discuss preventive strategies with your health care provider. In certain intermediate-risk adults over the age of 40, a coronary artery calcium score can be used to screen for early heart disease and guide the treatment of high cholesterol.

Conclusion: Healthy habits for building a strong foundation

Small, consistent changes often yield the most significant benefits over time. Developing healthy habits, such as mindful eating, regular exercise and limiting sedentary behavior, can lead to lasting improvements in your health and by influence, the health of your family.

Addressing Depression: a Persuasive Argument

How it works

  • 1 Introduction
  • 2 The Big Impact of Depression
  • 3 Fighting the Stigma Around Mental Health
  • 4 Making Treatment Accessible and Effective
  • 5 Conclusion

Introduction

Depression is a tough and common mental health problem that a lot of people deal with around the world. Even though we know more about mental health today, there’s still a lot of stigma around depression, making it hard for people to get the help they need. This essay wants to show why it’s important to take depression seriously. We’ll talk about three main points: how depression affects people and society, why we need to stop the stigma around mental health, and the need for easy-to-get and good treatment options.

By looking at these points, we can see that we need to work together to fight depression and help those who are struggling.

The Big Impact of Depression

Depression isn’t just feeling sad for a little while; it’s a serious mental health issue that affects many people and society as a whole. The World Health Organization says that over 264 million people worldwide are dealing with depression, making it a top cause of disability. People with depression often feel really down, lose interest in things they used to enjoy, and feel worthless, which makes daily life tough. This can lead to less productivity, hard times in relationships, and sometimes even thoughts of suicide. Economically, depression costs a lot in lost work and healthcare, adding up to billions of dollars each year. These numbers show why we need to find better ways to help people with depression and support them in their daily lives.

Fighting the Stigma Around Mental Health

A big problem in dealing with depression is the stigma that comes with mental health issues. Stigma shows up in different ways, like social discrimination, self-judgment, and barriers to getting care. People with depression often face misunderstanding and judgment from others, which makes them feel ashamed and stops them from seeking help. This cycle of not getting help can make depression worse over time. To stop this, we need to build a culture that accepts and understands mental health issues. Public awareness campaigns, education, and open talks about mental health can help reduce stigma. By promoting empathy and busting myths about depression, we can create a more supportive environment where people feel safe to get help.

Making Treatment Accessible and Effective

Understanding the impact of depression and reducing stigma are important, but we also need to make sure people can get good treatment. Treatments for depression include therapy, medication, and lifestyle changes. But obstacles like high costs, not enough mental health professionals, and lack of knowledge about treatment options stop people from getting the help they need. To fix this, we need to invest in mental health services and make treatments affordable and easy to access. This can be done by funding mental health programs, integrating mental health care into regular healthcare, and using technology like teletherapy and mental health apps. By making sure good treatment is available, we can reduce the impact of depression.

To wrap up, dealing with depression is a complex issue that needs a thorough approach, including raising awareness, reducing stigma, and making treatment accessible. The huge impact of depression on people and society shows how urgent this issue is. By creating a culture of acceptance and understanding, we can cut down on the stigma and encourage people to seek help. Investing in mental health services and making treatments easy to get are also key steps. Policymakers, healthcare providers, and everyone else need to work together to fight depression and support those affected. Only by working together can we make mental health a priority and ensure that people with depression get the care and support they need.

How to eat carbs without spiking your blood sugar, according to a nutrition researcher

  • Eating carbs with protein, fat, and fiber can help promote more stable blood sugar.
  • How you eat also matters, and eating more slowly and early in the day can prevent blood sugar spikes.
  • Other healthy habits like getting enough sleep are crucial for balanced blood sugar.

Insider Today

You don't have to cut out carbs to balance your blood sugar for better health and energy , according to a top nutrition researcher.

It's not just what you eat, but how you eat that matters when it comes to reducing blood sugar dips and spikes, according to Sarah Berry, professor at King's College in London and chief scientist at ZOE , a personalized nutrition and health science company.

While a rise in blood sugar after eating carbs is natural and not necessarily a problem, Berry said, having blood sugar that's too high or too low can increase inflammation, raising the risk of chronic disease and other health problems, research suggests.

"Our bodies are so clever, we have all of these different things in place to be able to handle that. But if this happens repeatedly and excessively, that's when then it becomes a problem," Berry said.

Dramatic fluctuations in blood sugar can also leave you feeling "rubbish," she said, leading to afternoon slumps, cravings, and brain fog.

The latest science suggests a few tweaks to your routine may help you prevent blood sugar spikes and drops without cutting out carbs.

"It doesn't mean you need to obsess about it, but it means you can be slightly more aware about it and be more aware about how you partner your foods, when you eat your foods and those kinds of things," Berry said.

Combine your carbs with nutrients like protein or healthy fat

You can still eat your favorite carbs, from pasta to bread, but the key to making them healthier is what you add to the meal or snack, dietitians previously told Business Insider.

Take breakfast as an example, Berry said.

If you're having a bagel, pairing the carbs with protein or healthy fats , like cheese or other nutrient-rich toppings (think salmon and veggies, for instance) can reduce your blood sugar response and help you feel better after eating.

Related stories

"You stay fuller for longer and that's what's important," Berry said. "Carbohydrates can be a really fabulous part of our diets, particularly if they're high in fiber. But just make sure you are having plenty of protein and healthy fats with it at the same time."

Choose high-fiber carbs like whole grains and berries

The type of carbs you chose can also influence your blood sugar response.

Foods that are high in fiber help to slow digestion, which means your blood sugar won't rise as quickly or crash later, dietitian Bonnie Taub-Dix previously told Business Insider.

Add more fiber to your diet by adding nuts and seeds to your snacks, using whole grain bread for sandwiches, loading up on chickpeas or other beans (especially in pasta) , and eating fiber-packed fruits like strawberries and blueberries.

Slow down and enjoy your food

Wolfing down your food can lead to bigger spikes in blood sugar and over time, is also linked to weight gain , research suggests.

"We see that if you eat your food more quickly, you have a higher blood sugar, you have a higher body weight," Berry said.

To level out your blood sugar, take time to enjoy your food without rush or distraction, chowing down in front of the TV, or racing to finish your meal.

Eat earlier in the day (and avoid nighttime snacking)

Some of the research Berry is most excited about suggests that when you eat matters for blood sugar, too.

A recent ZOE study found that people had a more moderate response in blood sugar when they ate a meal for breakfast, but a larger blood sugar response to the same meal when they ate it later in the day.

That supports growing research that our circadian rhythm can affect our metabolism. Previous research suggests eating too late at night can set you up for higher risk of certain health issues, too.

"This fits in with the kind of data that we are seeing that people who are late night snackers tend to have a higher BMI tend to have poorer cardiovascular health, tend to have higher circulating blood glucose," Berry said.

Take a short walk after meals

Another way to manage your blood sugar is to get moving, since exercise helps use up stored energy and makes you more sensitive to insulin , the hormone that regulates blood sugar.

One study found that walking for just two to five minutes after you eat can lower your blood sugar.

Get enough sleep (seriously)

No, you're not dreaming — getting some shuteye can help you enjoy carbs more healthfully. That's because too little sleep can raise your blood sugar . It can also make you more vulnerable to cravings and overeating , research suggests.

"If you have poor night's sleep, you have a higher blood sugar response compared to if you have a good night's sleep. So you set yourself up on this rollercoaster," Berry said.

It's a good reminder that blood sugar is about more than what we eat, but all our habits and even parts of our identity like age and sex can play a role.

"We are starting to get a beautiful puzzle coming together because what controls our blood glucose is so complex. It's who we are, how we eat, how we feel, our lifestyle, et cetera," she said.

How to get rid of motion sickness, according to the experts

No matter if you're traveling by car, train or boat, experiencing motion sickness can feel debilitating.

Motion sickness is a “mismatch between the different sensory systems,” Dr. Desi Schoo , MD, an assistant professor at Ohio State University's Wexner Medical Center in the Department of Otolaryngology.

The body’s peripheral sensory organs send signals to the brain to help to stabilize your balance. Motion sickness occurs when “the brain has a hard time interpreting and interacting with these different signals that are coming in,” Schoo says.

If you're prone to experiencing motion sickness, these doctor-approved tips can help you start feeling better.

How to get rid of motion sickness

To treat motion sickness, avoid situations in which you know you might begin to feel the sensation of motion sickness. For example, “some people are more prone to motion sickness if they're riding in the back seat of a car,” Schoo says. “Something as simple as riding in the front seat, or even driving the vehicle, in some cases, can help patients feel better.”

Dramamine , Benadryl and meclizine are OTC medications that can help to calm the sensation of motion sickness, per Healthline. It’s important to be aware that medicines that “aim to treat dizziness and motion sickness can make patients drowsy.”

According to the CDC, other techniques that may help reduce the symptoms of motion sickness include:

  • Staying hydrated and limiting caffeine and alcohol
  • Avoiding smoking
  • Getting enough sleep
  • Using distractions such as aromatherapy, controlled breathing, or listening to music

Is it possible to overcome motion sickness?

While it may not be entirely possible to overcome motion sickness, one study found that habituation therapy successfully reduced the symptoms of a patient experiencing severe motion sickness.

Habituation involves “repeatedly or tentatively [exposing] yourself to the nausea stimuli that's driving the motion sickness,” Schoo explains. The goal is to introduce the motion signal “that's causing distress to your body and your brain, [and] to try to lessen the symptoms over time,” he says.

“The hope is that through some of these exercises , the brain would become more accustomed to” the “sensory mismatch and start to ignore it,” Schoo says.

How long it takes for motion sickness to go away

“In most instances, I would expect motion sickness to be short lived,” Schoo says. The sensation “should resolve pretty quickly after the inciting event.”

However, “some patients will report severe dizziness or nausea that lasts hours after a car ride,” Schoo says. “I would be more suspicious or concerned about [lingering] symptoms.”

Schoo stresses the urgency of seeking medical attention if you’re experiencing severe and persistent “dizziness, imbalance, or nausea and vomiting.” These are “relatively atypical” symptoms of motion sickness, and may be an indication of a more serious health condition, he says.

Though rare, there are “certain types of strokes that can present as intense and severe dizziness, with nausea and vertigo, [and] the sensation of spinning,” Schoo notes.

Restaurant Portions Are About to Get Smaller. Are Americans Ready?

The towering burger and ballooning bagel have withstood public health campaigns, but a new movement to shrink servings is finally gaining traction.

how to get healthy lifestyle essay

By Kim Severson

Portion sizes in American restaurants shot up in the 1980s and never came down. The average serving of spaghetti and meatballs doubled. Bagels ballooned into six-inch-wide monstrosities. Burritos started to weigh more than a Harry Potter hardcover.

Nutritionists and policymakers haven’t had much success fighting portion creep, which has been linked to health problems associated with obesity. Attempts to legislate soda sizes were shot down . Calorie counts on menus have largely gone ignored and might even be harmful. Even celebrity-dusted public health campaigns from the White House didn’t move the needle much.

But today, a combo plate of economics, demographics and climate science may accomplish what years of official hand-wringing could not: loosening the grip that super-size restaurant portions have on the national diet.

Americans are not likely to break up with endless pasta bowls and half-pound burgers overnight. But the relationship has shifted significantly. More than 75 percent of customers say they want smaller portions for less money, according to the 2024 National Restaurant Association report on the industry .

Restaurants sinking under rising food costs are trying to figure out how to sell smaller servings without upsetting value-minded customers. This month, the Portion Balance Coalition , based at Georgetown University’s McDonough School of Business, began a yearlong study to puzzle out the problem. They hope to sign on at least 10 high-volume chains like Panda Express and Chick-fil-A.

Some restaurants have already taken action. In January, Subway introduced a snack-focused menu that includes smaller bites like $3 hot wraps. Burger King’s largest franchisee shrank its 10-piece chicken nugget order to eight. Panera Bread’s You Pick Two — a cup of soup with half a sandwich or half a salad — is among its most popular menu items.

Free COVID Tests Are Back for Fall 2024—Here's How to Get Yours

how to get healthy lifestyle essay

  • U.S. households will again be able to order four more free COVID tests through  COVIDTests.gov .
  • The website is not currently open, but the U.S. Health Department said tests will be available at the end of September.
  • The tests are FDA-authorized and intended for use through the end of 2024.

Americans will soon be able to order yet another round of free COVID-19 tests from the U.S. government, the U.S. Health Department's Administration for Strategic Preparedness and Response (ASPR) announced Monday.

The agency did not give an exact date for when the COVID tests would become available, but said that the tests were "coming soon" at the "end of September."

In keeping with past rules, each U.S. household is eligible to order four free COVID tests at COVIDTests.gov or on the U.S. Postal Service's website . Since its inception in January 2022, the government program has distributed more than 900 million tests to Americans.

The free tests are able to detect all current COVID variants and can be used through the end of 2024—a potentially helpful strategy as the virus is currently circulating at high levels across the U.S., according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The news also comes on the heels of a new COVID variant called XEC that is spreading in Europe and has been detected in the U.S. Though it hasn't yet shown up in variant surveillance data from the CDC, experts speculate that it could spread more easily and may become the predominant variant in the U.S. over the coming months.

How to Order Your Free COVID Tests

Each U.S. household will be able to order four free COVID tests from COVIDTests.gov beginning at the end of September. Currently, the website is closed for ordering tests, but the ASPR suggests it should open in the coming days.

Households may also acquire tests by visiting the USPS website. Ordering there "will restart in late September 2024" as well. The USPS also shared that households will be able to order "standard and more accessible COVID-19 tests...while supplies last."

Past ordering practices have required people to provide a valid U.S. address. The packages typically shipped within seven to 12 days, per the USPS.

People can also contact  HRSA health centers ,  Test to Treat sites , or  ICATT locations  for more information on whether they might be eligible for low- or no-cost COVID tests in addition to those they might receive through the free COVID test program.

How to Use Your Free COVID Tests

The free COVID tests provided by the U.S. government are FDA-authorized at-home diagnostic tests and typically provide results within 30 minutes or less, according to the ASPR.

These at-home tests are also known as antigen tests or rapid tests. Depending on the type of test you receive, the test kit will include multiple parts and often requires swabbing one or both nostrils. The CDC urges anyone using an at-home test to thoroughly read the package inserts and follow the instructions closely.

Positive results from an at-home test are accurate and reliable, but a negative test cannot entirely rule out infection, according to the CDC. In this case, the agency recommends having two to three negative antigen tests to rule out a COVID infection.

Reporting your test results—positive or negative—can also be helpful in tracking the virus's spread throughout the U.S. The ASPR urges people to report any test results to public health agencies at  MakeMyTestCount.org .
