Former bishop who quit over priest sex scandal moved in church shuffle

CINCINNATI (WXIX) - A former bishop who resigned in May 2020 over a priest sex scandal has been reassigned as part of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati reorganization plan.

Bishop Emeritus Joseph Binzer is now the pastor of Good Shepherd Church in Montgomery, according to a list of priest assignments released Monday by the archdiocese.

Prior to being moved to Good Shepherd Church, Binzer was assigned in 2021 to oversee Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Mt. Healthy and St. John Neumann Catholic Church in Springfield Township.

The archdiocese removed Bishop Binzer from overseeing priest personnel matters in Cincinnati in 2019, saying he failed to report a 2013 accusation that Father Geoff Drew behaved improperly with children to Archbishop Dennis Schnurr and the Priest’s Personnel Board. The Archdiocese says Bishop Binzer did report the allegation to the Prosecutor’s Office and Children’s Services and addressed the concern himself with Drew.

Father Drew pleaded guilty in Dec. 2021 to nine counts of raping a 10-year-old altar boy multiple times between 1998 and 1991 and was sentenced to seven years in prison.

Binzer resigned from the Office of the Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati in 2020 and his resignation was accepted by Pope Francis, a spokeswoman for the archdiocese said.

“He remains a priest in active ministry in the Archdiocese of Cincinnati and is eligible to be a pastor,” Director of Media Relations for the Archdiocese of Cincinnati Jennifer Schack wrote in response to an inquiry from FOX19 NOW.

We reached out to Concerned Catholics of Cincinnati and a spokeswoman said they will have a statement about Binzer’s reassignment later this week.

No. 2 bishop at Archdiocese of Cincinnati resigns in fallout over priest charged with raping altar boy

The archdiocese announced its final parish reorganization plan in Dec. 2021.

The reorganization, known as “Beacons of Light” will consolidate the Archdiocese of Cincinnati’s 208 parishes into 57 “families of parishes,” which will begin sharing priests, staff, facilities, and other resources in 2022.

Families of Parishes will then be responsible for revising Mass schedules, combining church programs, and making decisions about the future of underutilized church buildings along with the status of Catholic schools.

According to Jennifer Schack, director of media relations for the archdiocese, about a third of the priests have new assignments.

Each reorganized parish will have at least one pastor and up to three parochial vicars or retired priests.

The pastors range in age from 30 to 71, Schack said.

The priest assignments will take effect on July 1, 2022.

Archdiocese announces priest assignments under reorganization plan

StJamesWindow.jpg

CINCINNATI — The Archdiocese of Cincinnati has announced priest assignments as part of its reorganization plan, known as Beacons of Light.

On Monday, priest assignments for new parish configurations was announced to Greater Cincinnati in a press release.

Beacons of Light was initially announced in October 2021 , but after feedback from parishioners and priests, the plan was revised in December to streamline consolidation between parishes in the city.

The final “Families of Parishes” map saw “a considerable number of changes, but collectively they’re changes that resulted in a stronger configuration,” said archdiocese spokesperson Jennifer Schack.

The Archdiocese received roughly 7,800 comments from local Catholics about the Beacons of Light restructuring plan, which assigned parishes to groups that will be asked to consolidate operations in the next five years. Schack said about 25% of the public comments involved "local considerations."

“Although we had conceptually these ideas of the existing relationships, hearing it from the people that are in the parishes of their hopes for the future or success stories of how they’re working together already, those local considerations were definitely highlighted and made for some edits that are hopefully very strong for the final arrangement,” Schack said.

The reconfiguring of parishes happened in response to a decline in membership and in overall priests over the years.

Priest assignments were a result of the Priests' Personnel Board's work over several months. The process of placing priests in Families of Parishes took into consideration input from each priest on skills, personal choice and retirement plans where applicable.

Cincinnati archdiocese announces area priest reassignments

Credit: DaytonDailyNews

The Cincinnati Archdiocese has unveiled new priest assignments in the wake of its archdiocesan reorganization that will result in the possible closing of some churches while others are pointed toward new uses.

A smaller number of Catholic priests has made the effort unavoidable, the archdiocese said last fall when the plan was first unveiled.

From 2010 to 2019, the practice of baptisms, first communions, confirmations and weddings in area Catholic churches fell by 23%. The average Sunday service is only one-third full, the archdiocese says.

“Our current infrastructure and schedules were built for a different era,” the archdiocese said in a release Monday. “In many cases, our church buildings are grossly underutilized.”

“The status quo is no longer an option,” the archdiocese added.

Some priests announced how changes affect their parishes from the pulpit over the weekend, but a archdiocesan spokeswoman said the complete list of reassignments was made available for the first time Monday.

The complete list of assignments is available at BeaconsAOC.org . The assignments take effect July 1, 2022, on the implementation of a reorganization the archdiocese is calling “families of parishes.”

A “family” is a group of several parishes led by one pastor.

The archdiocese said its leaders considered input “from each priest regarding his own desires, skills and (where applicable) retirement plans; an assessment of each family of parishes and its priest staffing and pastoral leadership needs.”

Among Dayton-area priest assignments:

In Dayton, the Rev. Angelo Anthony will serve as pastor at Emmanuel, Holy Trinity and St. Joseph parishes. The Rev. Eugene Schnipke will serve as pastor at Precious Blood, St. Rita and St. Paul parishes. The Rev. Anthony Fortman has been named parochial vicar, with another vicar projected to be named, according to the list the archdiocese shared with this news outlet.

The Rev. Edward Pratt will be pastor of St. Albert the Great, St. Charles Borromeo and Ascension parishes, all in Kettering. The Rev. Thomas A. Nevels will be parochial vicar, with another vicar projected.

The Rev. Brian Phelps will be pastor at Incarnation and St. Francis of Assisi parishes in Centerville, with the Rev. Ignatius Madanu serving as vicar.

Also in Dayton, the Rev. Satish Joseph will pastor St. Helen, Immaculate Conception, St. Anthony, Holy Angels and St. Mary parishes, with the Rev. Leonard C. Wenke serving as vicar. Another vicar is projected.

The Rev. Father Francis Tandoh will pastor St. Augustine parish in Germantown, Queen of Martyrs, St. Benedict the Moor and Our Lady of Grace, all in Dayton. The Rev. Benoit Mukamba will serve as vicar.

The Rev. Martin Fox was named pastor of Our Lady of Good Hope in Miamisburg, St. Henry in Dayton and St. Mary of the Assumption in Springboro. He will be joined by the Revs. David Howard, Jerome Bishop and James Manning as vicars.

The Rev. Kyle E. Schnippel will pastor St. Peter in Huber Heights, Holy Cross and Our Lady of the Rosary in Dayton, with St. Christopher in Vandalia and St. John the Baptist in Tipp City. The Rev. Andrew Smith was named vicar with another projected.

In Dayton, the Rev. George Gabet will pastor Holy Family parish.

The Rev. Father Jason E. Bedel was named pastor of Mary Help of Christians in Fairborn, St. Paul in Yellow Springs, St. Luke in Beavercreek, St. Brigid in Xenia, St. Augustine in Jamestown and Sacred Heart in New Carlisle. The Revs. John Madanu, Ambrose T. Dobrozsi, Michael J. Holloran were named vicars while the Rev. Timothy G. Fahey was named Wright State University chaplain.

In Clark County, the Rev. Father John D. MacQuarrie was named pastor of St. Teresa of the Child Jesus, St. Bernard, St. Raphael and St. Joseph in Springfield, as well as St. Charles Borromeo in South Charleston. The Rev. Elijah R. Puthof will be vicar.

The Rev. Father John D. MacQuarrie will pastor St. Teresa of the Child Jesus, St. Bernard; St. Raphael, St. Joseph, all in Springfield and St. Charles Borromeo in South Charleston, with the Rev. Elijah R. Puthof as vicar.

In Miami County, the Rev. Eric A. Bowman was named pastor at St. Teresa of the Infant Jesus, Covington; St. Mary and St. Boniface, in Piqua; St. Patrick, Troy and Transfiguration, a West Milton parish. The vicars will be the Revs. Steven L. Shoup, James S. Duell and Matthew K. Lee.

The Rev. Father Jarred L. Kohn will pastor St. Michael in Ft. Loramie; Sts. Peter and Paul in Newport; Holy Angels, Sidney and Sacred Heart of Jesus, McCartyville. Revs. Aaron C. Hess, Stephen J. Mondiek and Andrew M. Reckers were named vicars.

CINCINNATI (WKRC) - Parishioners can now find out who their priest will be as part of the Beacons of Light reorganization.

The Archdiocese released the information on Monday.

As part of Beacons of Light , 208 parishes are coming together as 57 Parish Families. The groupings range from one to as many as eight different churches.

The assignment plan also includes pastors and parochial vicars.

Priests provided input about where they'd like to be and how their skills would fit for each Family. The Archdiocese also took into consideration staffing and pastoral leadership needs for each Family of Parishes, and the determination of best fit between priest candidates and various Families.

Recommended assignments were submitted to Archbishop Dennis Schnurr for final approval.

For six months, there will be training, workshops and other resources for priests, deacons and parish staff, according to the Archdiocese.

Priest assignments will take effect on July 1.

PRIEST ASSIGNMENTS TO BE ANNOUNCED

Cincinnati Catholic Archdiocese ‘Beacons of Light’

Planning process has reached the next milestone.

By Chuck Gibson

LOVELAND, OH (February 12, 2022) – Catholics at parishes throughout the Archdiocese of Cincinnati will likely learn today and tomorrow who will be their new parish pastor and priest  – and where their current pastor and priest will be serving.

archdiocese of cincinnati priest assignments 2022

Officially, the Archdiocese Beacons of Light website will have all the new priest assignments listed for the public on the website beginning Monday, February 14, 2022 at 12- noon!  The Beacons of Light is the pastoral planning process for the Archdiocese of Cincinnati.

CLICK HERE to read the first in a series of Catholic Telegraph articles covering each of the six Foundational Principles of the Beacons of Light pastoral planning process.

Recently Catholic Parishes all across the Archdiocese were informed of how they would be ‘grouped’ to form one parish family from multiple parishes. There will be several of these groupings to form multiple parish families. This will reduce the number of pastors needed to serve compared to the current situation where virtually every parish has its own pastor and priest. Each parish family will have the opportunity to decide how the churches and schools will work together in one parish family without Archbishop Dennis Schnurr and other Archdiocese leaders making decisions to close certain churches or schools.

St. Columban Church has been paired with St. Margaret of York in Beacons of Light pastoral planning process(Chuck Gibson)

Here in the Loveland area, the parish of St. Columban, currently led by the Reverend Larry Tensi has been paired with the parish of St. Margaret of York, currently led by the Reverend Jason Bedel.

The name of the new pastor for St. Columban and St. Margaret of York could be revealed at masses beginning today.

Today, Saturday, February 12, 2022, is the first opportunity for Rev. Tensi and Rev. Bedel to share with their parishioners who their new pastor will be, and where they will be assigned to serve. Priest assignments for all the Archdiocese of Cincinnati will be available to the public beginning Monday, February 14.

Here is the message from the Archdiocese Beacons of Light pastoral planning:
