આ દિવસે બજારોને એક અદ્ભુત દેખાવ આપવા માટે દુલ્હનની જેમ લાઈટોથી સજાવવામાં આવે છે. આ દિવસે બજારમાં ખાસ કરીને મીઠાઇ અને કપડાંની દુકાનોની ખુબ ભીડ જોવા મળે છે. બાળકોને બજારમાંથી નવા કપડા, ફટાકડા , મીઠાઇ, ભેટ, અને રમકડા ખરીદતા હોય છે.
લોકો તહેવારોના થોડા દિવસો પહેલા જ તેમના ઘરની સારી રીતે સફાઇ કરે છે અને રોશની અને દીવાથી શણગારે છે. હિન્દુ કેલેન્ડર મુજબ લોકો સૂર્યાસ્ત પછી દેવી લક્ષ્મી અને ભગવાન ગણેશની પૂજા પણ કરે છે. લોકો ભગવાન અને દેવી પાસે આરોગ્ય, સંપત્તિ અને ઉજ્જવળ ભવિષ્ય માટે પ્રાર્થના કરે છે. દિવાળીના તહેવારના પાંચેય દિવસ લોકો ખાદ્ય ચીજો અને અવનવી મીઠાઇની વાનગીઓ બનાવે છે. આ દિવસ થી લોકો સારી પ્રવૃત્તિઓની નજીક જાય છે અને ખરાબ ટેવોને દૂર કરે છે.

दिवाळी हा हिंदूंचा अतिशय लोकप्रिय आणि महत्त्वाचा सण आहे. दिवाळी हा आपल्या भारतात साजरा होणारा सर्वात मोठा सण आहे. तसे, आपल्या भारतात अनेक सण साजरे केले जातात. पण दिवाळी हा सर्वात मोठा सण मानला जातो. हा सण कार्तिक महिन्यातील अमावास्येला साजरा केला जातो.
त्रेतायुगात 14 वर्षांच्या वनवासानंतर भगवान श्री राम अयोध्येत परतल्याचा आनंदोत्सव साजरा करताना अयोध्येत सर्वत्र दिवे लावण्यात आले होते, त्यामुळे संपूर्ण अयोध्या स्वर्गासारखी उजळून निघाली होती. भगवान रामाच्या अयोध्येत आगमन झाल्याबद्दल दरवर्षी दिवाळी साजरी केली जाते.

दिवाळीचे दुसरे नाव ‘दीपावली’ आहे. या सणाचा अर्थ ‘दीपोत्सव’ किंवा ‘प्रकाशोत्सव’ असा आहे. दीपोत्सवात घरांच्या अंगणात अगणित दिवे लावले जातात. दिव्यांच्या या असंख्य रांगा आकाशातील ताऱ्यांसारख्या दिसतात.
दिवाळी सणासुदीचे दिवे सुंदर, रंगीबेरंगी आणि निसर्गाचे प्रतिनिधित्व करतात. दिव्यांच्या या तारांमुळे रात्रीच्या अंधारात घरे अधिक सुंदर दिसतात. लोकांच्या घरांचे अंगण जणू दिव्यांच्या ओळीने सजले जातात. या ओळी एक चैतन्यशील वातावरण तयार करतात जे प्रत्येकाला हवेहवेसे वाटते.
