Research shows that cloud computing will transform every aspect of business, from logistics to customer relationships to the way teams work together, and today’s organizations are preparing for this seismic shift. A new report from Google on the future of cloud computing combines an in-depth look at how the cloud is shaping the enterprise of tomorrow with actionable advice to help today’s leaders unlock its benefits. Along with insights from Google luminaries and leading companies, the report includes key findings from a research study that surveyed 1,100 business and IT decision-makers from around the world. Their responses shed light on the rapidly evolving technology landscape at a global level, as well as variations in cloud maturity and adoption trends across individual countries. Here are five themes that stood out to us from this brand-new research.

1. Cloud computing will move to the forefront of enterprise technology over the next decade, backed by strong executive support.

Globally, 47 percent of survey participants said that the majority of their companies’ IT infrastructures already use public or private cloud computing. When we asked about predictions for 2029, that number jumped 30 percentage points. C-suite respondents were especially confident that the cloud will reign supreme within a decade: More than half anticipate that it will meet at least three-quarters of their IT needs, while only 40 percent of their non-C-suite peers share that view. What’s the takeaway? The cloud already plays a key role in enterprise technology, but the next 10 years will see it move to the forefront—with plenty of executive support. Here’s how that data breaks down around the world.

2. The cloud is becoming a significant driver of revenue growth.

Cloud computing helps businesses focus on improving efficiency and fostering innovation, not simply maintaining systems and status quos. So it’s not surprising that 79 percent of survey respondents already consider the cloud an important driver of revenue growth, while 87 percent expect it to become one within a decade. C-suite respondents were just as likely as their non-C-suite peers to anticipate that the cloud will play an important role in driving revenue growth in 2029. This tells us that decision-makers across global organizations believe their future success will hinge on their ability to effectively apply cloud technology.

3. Businesses are combining cloud capabilities with edge computing to analyze data at its source.

Over the next decade, the cloud will continue to evolve as part of a technology stack that increasingly includes IoT devices and edge computing, in which processing occurs at or near the data’s source. Thirty-three percent of global respondents said they use edge computing for a majority of their cloud operations, while 55 percent expect to do so by 2029. The United States lags behind in this area, with only 18 percent of survey participants currently using edge computing for a majority of their cloud operations, but that figure grew by a factor of 2.5 when respondents looked ahead to 2029. As more and more businesses extend the power and intelligence of the cloud to the edge, we can expect to see better real-time predictions, faster responses, and more seamless customer experiences.

4. Tomorrow’s businesses will prioritize openness and interoperability.

In the best cases, cloud adoption is part of a larger transformation in which new tools and systems positively affect company culture. Our research suggests that businesses will continue to place more value on openness over the next decade. By 2029, 41 percent of global respondents expect to use open-source software (OSS) for a majority of their software platform, up 14 percentage points from today. Predicted OSS use was nearly identical between IT decision-makers and their business-oriented peers, implying that technology and business leaders alike recognize the value of interoperability, standardization, freedom from vendor lock-in, and continuous innovation.

5. On their journey to the cloud, companies are using new techniques to balance speed and quality.

To stay competitive in today’s streaming world, businesses face growing pressure to innovate faster—and the cloud is helping them keep pace. Sixty percent of respondents said their companies will update code weekly or daily by 2029, while 37 percent said they’ve already adopted this approach. This tells us that over the next 10 years, we’ll see an uptick in the use of continuous integration and delivery techniques, resulting in more frequent releases and higher developer productivity.

As organizations prepare for the future, they will need to balance the need for speed with maintaining high quality. Our research suggests that they’ll do so by addressing security early in the development process and assuming constant vulnerability so they’re never surprised. More than half of respondents said they already implement security pre-development, and 72 percent plan to do so by 2029.

Cloud-based enterprises will also rely on automation to maintain quality and security as their operations become faster and more continuous. Seventy percent of respondents expect a majority of their security operations to be automated by 2029, compared to 33 percent today.

UC Berkeley formally launched this week a research lab aimed at building a new backbone for interconnected cloud computing, a milestone that would revolutionize the industry.

The Sky Computing Lab will establish a two-sided market mediated by services that identify and harness for users the best combination of compatible clouds for their needs. The market will catalyze innovation and competition, unleashing less costly and more secure computing power for scientists studying everything from self-driving car technology to human health.

“Today, more and more computation and more and more data is going to the cloud. There is no turning back from that,” said Ion Stoica , Databricks co-founder and the Berkeley computer science professor leading the lab. “Sky will knock out current barriers and accelerate the transition to the cloud, which will accelerate the progress across different fields.”

This lab is the latest in a series of five-year computer science labs at Berkeley focused on work from advancing basic research to software development. Efforts from these labs have resulted in influential research papers and groundbreaking start-ups like Databricks , Opaque , D2IQ , Alluxio and Ponder .

During the pandemic, cloud computing – providing services like data storage and video streaming over the internet – became increasingly important to all kinds of industries and organizations. And it’s expected to become more central to computing and society in the coming years. Sky Computing wants to shift the existing fragmented market, which can be costly and difficult for users who want to work across clouds, towards a utility market that is as connected and easy to use as the internet.

Some of the biggest names in cloud computing – including Google, IBM, Intel, Samsung SDS and VMware – are founding sponsors for the new lab. Internet for the cloud

The mediator services, known as “intercloud brokers,” will be a linchpin of this new market format. Each will have a catalog holding information about the cloud’s services, compatibility, pricing and performance; a job in-take interface collecting descriptions of the user’s needs; and an optimizer generating a user-specific plan of what clouds to use when, and more.

Broker services will have tools to move or replicate data to the designated locations and to allocate resources and execute and troubleshoot the computational plan across clouds. They will also have a way to verify the identity of users and may have a billing component.

These brokers will operate on top of “compatibility sets,” which consist of services that are available across more than one cloud. In the future, Stoica expects cross-cloud agreements that allow for the free exchange of data to connect many of the disparate clouds.

“If you look at the internet, under the hood it's a collection of different networks and different technologies. But the internet ties them together. When you communicate, you do not know what different technologies and different networks are under the hood, right? You just send packets from A to B,” said Stoica. “Sky plans to do similarly for the cloud.”

This plan will expand the kinds and numbers of consumers interested in using cloud services, Stoica said. It will make it easier to use the hardware that’s right for user needs, regardless of which cloud originally held that application. Users will be able to aggregate resources across clouds to run large workloads that they couldn’t tackle on an individual cloud account. 

Users will also be able to find the most efficient and cost-effective approach for their computing task and to move their data to different cloud providers who best fit their current needs. This new technology will help companies more easily comply with data sovereignty rules in different countries and unlock new opportunities for multi-cloud security approaches to protecting their data. 

Smaller, specialized cloud providers could also more easily find customers and therefore find it easier to get off the ground and innovate. The growing numbers of new users moving to cloud computing because of the slew of new benefits and opportunities will benefit all cloud providers.

‘Nothing short of a revolution’

The Sky Computing Lab’s future is already becoming reality. With help from Berkeley artificial intelligence students, the team is testing an early version of an intercloud broker prototype for machine learning workloads. The team urged in a recent paper for other practitioners and researchers to join them in this all-encompassing effort.

“We should be clear that what we are proposing is nothing short of a revolution in an important technology ecosystem,” the team wrote in “ The sky above the clouds ,” a white paper recently posted on arXiv. “We don’t ask that readers accept Sky Computing as inevitable, merely as not impossible. And we invite interested readers to help us on this quest.”

ModisAzure — Azure Service for Remote Sensing Geoscience

ModisAzure is a science pipeline for download, initial processing, and reduction of satellite imagery. It is developed by Microsoft Research, UVa, UCB. The service dramatically lowers resource and complexity barriers to use satellite imagery for terrestrial hydrology and geoscience. Common imagery location is determined and uploaded from diverse sources into Azure blob store. Common reprojection and harmonization is performed at scale in Azure to produce science-ready imagery with the same length, time and quality attributes. Optional scientist-provided reduction algorithm (.NET, Java, or MatLab) can also be run in the Cloud. This provides on-demand scalability beyond the local desktop or cluster.

ModisAzure

The ModisAzure service is in use now to compute 10 year continental scale water balance for North America. Per year:

  • 500 GB (~60K files) upload of 9 different source imagery products from 15 different locations
  • 400 GB reprojected harmonized imagery consuming ~3500 cpu hours
  • 5 GB reduced science result leveraging reported field data aggregates consuming ~3600 cpu hour

Additional science requests to expand the service to cover Europe and to include additional source imagery products and formats is pending.

Tools to Transform the Potential of Cloud to Reality for Research

Cloud holds promise for science users across the computing spectrum, from desktop users who need on-demand compute power to HPC cluster users who wish to scale out further. The potential for effective research in the Azure Cloud will come to fruition only when there is a better understanding of its capabilities (and limitations) and tools are available to make it accessible to scientists. We present work that addresses these two issues to enable research across desktop client and the Cloud.

AzureScope is an online resource for practitioners and architects to understand the performance characteristics of Azure. This helps them select applications that are best suited to leverage the Azure platform. Besides repeatable micro-benchmarks that measure the performance characteristics of storage services like Blobs, Tables, Queue, XDrive and SQL Azure, it also monitors the healthy status of Azure fabric services. At a higher level, we report benchmarks of common distributed algorithms like Matrix Multiplication, Gigasort and Bio-Sequence Comparison, and identify best practices for running applications on Azure.

The Microsoft Cloud Computing Research Centre (MCCRC) is a virtual research centre in which technology lawyers and computer scientists collaborate to conduct cutting-edge research on challenges in cloud computing at the intersection of technology and regulation. The MCCRC was launched in April 2014. It is a collaboration between the Cloud Legal Project at the Centre for Commercial Law Studies, Queen Mary University of London (CLP) and the University of Cambridge Computer Laboratory (CCL). The MCCRC addresses complex and difficult areas of vital importance to governments, businesses, and communities around the globe. The Cloud Legal Project has been conducting pioneering research in the emerging field of cloud computing law since 2009. The Cambridge Computer Laboratory is a world class research centre working in key areas relevant to the development of cloud computing, including distributed systems, networking and security, associated with the Center for Science and Policy (CSaP), that provides the network and mechanisms for high-quality engagement between academics and policy professionals.

A proposal to give scientists access to huge data sets and powerful computers.

Leading universities and major technology companies agreed on Tuesday to back a new project intended to give academics and other scientists access to the computing resources now available mainly to a few tech giants.

The initiative, the National Research Cloud, has received bipartisan support in both the House and the Senate. Lawmakers in both houses have proposed bills that would create a task force of government science leaders, academics and industry representatives to outline a plan to create and fund a national research cloud.

This program would give academic scientists access to the cloud data centers of the tech giants, and to public data sets for research.

Several universities, including Stanford, Carnegie Mellon and Ohio State, and tech companies including Google, Amazon and IBM backed the idea as well on Tuesday. The organizations declared their support for the creation of a research cloud and their willingness to participate in the project.

The research cloud, though a conceptual blueprint at this stage, is another sign of the largely effective campaign by universities and tech companies to persuade the American government to increase government backing for research into artificial intelligence. The Trump administration, while cutting research elsewhere, has proposed doubling federal spending on A.I. research by 2022.

Fueling the increased government backing is the recognition that A.I. technology is essential to national security and economic competitiveness. The national cloud legislation will be proposed as an amendment to this year’s defense budget authorization.

Such management will be depicted by an application that can potentially simulate the movement of vehicles like cars, scooters, and three-wheelers after analyzing real-time traffic. This is because they will be deriving the shortest path and time for a vehicle so that it may not get trapped by traffic congestion. Still thinking about how this project will predict the shortest path and minimum time for a vehicle! Through three-layered networks of a wireless sensor, vehicle routing, and updated coordinates of a vehicle’s source and destination, vehicles moving in modern cities can be tracked and monitored well. Later, video processing algorithms will measure the intensity of traffic influencing events like fluctuations in weather conditions, driving zones, and other special events. 2. Chatbots

Chatbots are Artificially-Intelligent Softwares showing responsiveness towards the existing queries. Those queries may either be of a student or an employee, depending upon the requirements in real-times. But this project will promisingly let the beginners prepare a software whose database is cloud-based and let a student get responses for the queries he/she may enter. Are you curious to know how this project will be identifying the answers? With NLP i.e Natural Language Processing and ML i.e Machine Learning algorithms, a list of appropriate responses will be entered in those chatbots which will answer the questions (these are the input patterns) of a student in a goal-oriented manner. 3. Bug Tracker

Bug Tracker isn’t only simple but effective to use for identifying and killing a variety of bugs. Those bugs may occur due to errors in communication, syntax, calculations, or commands. Thinking how such bugs may be identified in a shorter span! For doing the same, a person using this tracker (who may either be an administrator, staff member, or some customer) will determine the type and source of the bug just by logging in to this application via a valid username and strong password. Then, the person may review the details regarding the bug like the date of bug creation, the time for which the bug lasted in the system, and so on. In case the bug isn’t related directly or indirectly to the administrator, he/she may transfer its details to a staff member or vice versa. If required, the bug details may also be sent to the customers if the same (i.e. bug) is troubling them. The benefit will be that the customers not able to find solutions for that bug will directly by contacting the administrator for the much-required solutions. In this manner, the customers need not waste their time analyzing the searches and labels of this Bug Tracker as the administrator has provided the solutions that can detect and eliminate a bug in a shorter span. 

4. Detecting Data Leaks Using SQL

Data Leaks have become common in this pandemic era and their consequences are hazardous to innocent users. This is because they may occur in a known or unknown manner since it has many types. Either your password gets stolen when any of your friends get successful in remembering the keystrokes or some ransomware starts taking charge of your system as well as mind, all these are a variety of data leaks. In this project, a system will be prepared through cloud technology whose security will be AESX Encryption based. Are you thinking about how this will prevent the existing security vulnerabilities (like an SQL Injection)? For doing the same successfully, the software detecting the data leaks will do the content inspection and contextual analysis both. Through them, the users (which may either be an assaulter) will be categorized in accordance with the messages or activities they are performing over the internet. Later, if the messages sent by a user are inviting security vulnerabilities in a knowing or unknowing manner, such messages and the users are identified and the software (packed with DLP i.e. Data Loss Prevention solutions) will intelligently restrict those users or take some strict actions against them for preventing such losses in terms of money or mental health. On an overall basis, this project will ideally ensure the privacy and security of your information stored on the e-commerce platforms at which you may log in daily or frequently.     

5. Android Offloading

Android Offloading would be a direct approach to facilitate easy offloading. Now you may ask what the offloading is? Offloading is a combination of Off + Loading which means switching off or reducing the load. That load may either be on an operating system like Android or Windows, depending upon the complexity of the environment. In this project, students will be proposing an offloading framework that uses cloud-based servers. Such servers will be reducing a load of Android by letting the users shift the heavy workload applications onto those virtual servers consisting of benefits of cloud storage. With this, various processes running in the foreground or background of your Android phones may now execute other important tasks as space is now made available for them. Here, users may select a process or the associated file to conveniently record the timestamp analysis. Such analysis will determine for how long the existing applications are using Android resources and computing power and what are the non-interacting components of the existing applications? With this, those non-interactive portions and space-occupying tasks are shifted towards the cloud-based servers thereby empowering the smartphones to exhibit robotic offload in real-times. This would be an ideal choice for beginners as such a project will be helping the companies determine if their existing systems are capable of extracting profit margins or not within the existing market circumstances!

6. Blood Banking Via Cloud Computing

Blood Banking is a process that utilizes well, the existing scientific methods, for facilitating the transfusion of blood. Depending upon the blood type and availability of donors in that particular area, this project can cater to such parameters well through a central database strengthened with the computing power of scalable and efficient cloud storage. You may think about how the doctors and other professional medical experts will identify which donor is the best! The answer is the previous track records. This online cloud-based Blood Banking system will highlight the key contributions of the donors in previous months or years and determine the quality of results produced by his/her blood. With this, doctors and other practitioners are now assured with the ease of access to blood (either A+, B+, AB+, or O-)  during an emergency period. Also, this will be helping the beginners understand the importance of blood banks and what are the consequences patients need to face when the blood which could be transfused to their veins isn’t provided at their booked slots.

7. Attendance Tracker

Attendance Tracker could be an award-winning project for college students or beginners in the field of cloud computing. This is because such a tracker will help investigate anomalies in the current attendance records. With this tracker, students may hypnotize their teachers or experienced authorities of management because the tracker has so much potential that it can identify which students are irregular to their classes and not ready to establish connectivity with the actual concepts of their curriculum’s subjects. The tracker works fine with Azure cloud that manages the analytics and networking of cloud-oriented applications well. As soon as you enter a student’s Enrollment Number or Name, details like availability in classes, number of lectures attended will be displayed and no proxies are possible since the tracker is supported by Azure cloud capabilities. Even the security offered is so robust and powerful that those naughty students who always fool their deans are caught in a shorter span – just after the admin enters login details into this tracker. All this will improve accuracy and transparency in any of the educational institutions as students and their parents are pre-informed about the real-time status of leave requests and absenteeism in a confidential manner and at reduced costs. 

8. Rural Banking

This project supports the service of rural banking for smaller rural communities constantly looking for robust and strengthened deposit mobilization mechanisms. Title: towards a novel privacy-preserving distributed multiparty data outsourcing scheme for cloud computing with quantum key distribution.

Abstract: The intersection of cloud computing, blockchain technology, and the impending era of quantum computing presents a critical juncture for data security. This research addresses the escalating vulnerabilities by proposing a comprehensive framework that integrates Quantum Key Distribution (QKD), CRYSTALS Kyber, and Zero-Knowledge Proofs (ZKPs) for securing data in cloud-based blockchain systems. The primary objective is to fortify data against quantum threats through the implementation of QKD, a quantum-safe cryptographic protocol. We leverage the lattice-based cryptographic mechanism, CRYSTALS Kyber, known for its resilience against quantum attacks. Additionally, ZKPs are introduced to enhance data privacy and verification processes within the cloud and blockchain environment. A significant focus of this research is the performance evaluation of the proposed framework. Rigorous analyses encompass encryption and decryption processes, quantum key generation rates, and overall system efficiency. Practical implications are scrutinized, considering factors such as file size, response time, and computational overhead. The evaluation sheds light on the framework's viability in real-world cloud environments, emphasizing its efficiency in mitigating quantum threats. The findings contribute a robust quantum-safe and ZKP-integrated security framework tailored for cloud-based blockchain storage. By addressing critical gaps in theoretical advancements, this research offers practical insights for organizations seeking to secure their data against quantum threats. The framework's efficiency and scalability underscore its practical feasibility, serving as a guide for implementing enhanced data security in the evolving landscape of quantum computing and blockchain integration within cloud environments.

The current 6G NeXt research project [ 1 ] is exploring the feasibility of using true 3D holography as a case study, establishing criteria for both communication and computing infrastructure. In a future holographic communication service, clients are dispersed throughout the network and engage in collaborative interactions. Holographic communication demands significant processing power, necessitating the inevitability of a high-speed distributed backbone computing infrastructure that embodies the concept of split computing. Moreover, seamless integration between processing facilities and wireless networks is imperative to deliver an immersive user experience [ 2 ].

This presentation is going to delineate the realm of true 3D holographic communication and its prerequisites. It introduces concepts of distributing computing tasks in a new way across conventional computing infrastructure and outlines a suitable solution approach, presenting innovative technological strategies based on a proposed comprehensive communication and computing architecture. True holography, as an exceptionally demanding example of future XR applications, highlights the necessity and challenges for telecommunication providers in designing new networks in conjunction with cloud infrastructure. Future generations of networks will bring us closer to the true convergence of connectivity and computing [ 3 ].

French research institutes pool computing resources to save money and emissions

Since 2017, CentraleSupélec, ENS Paris-Saclay and Paris-Saclay University have pooled their efforts to buy and host scientific computational resources at the CNRS's Institute for Development and Resources in Intensive Scientific Computing (Idris). The twin aim is to reduce the environmental footprint and financial costs of data centres and also to foster synergies between laboratories.

The  digital economy's impact on the environment  never stops growing, currently accounting for 6% to 10% of the world's electricity consumption, nearly 4% of our greenhouse gas emissions with an annual increase of between 5 and 7%. Data centres play a central role in storing the billions of data produced per second and consume a large proportion of  the  sector's energy .

The scientific demand for computer calculation resources is ever multiplying. This is one of the reasons research stakeholders on the Saclay plateau implemented a practical solution ten years ago to limit their operating budgets and the  environmental impact of their machines . These machines are pooled and managed by CNRS's Institute for Development and Resources in Intensive Scientific Computing (Idris).

An alliance of three partners

A combination of events started the ball rolling in the early 2010s on this plateau in the south-west of the Île-de-France region. The Mechanics and Technology Laboratory (LMT) 1  in Cachan and the Mechanics of Soils, Structures and Materials Laboratory (MSSMat) 2  in Châtenay-Malabry used to work jointly on mesocentres 3  installed on their premises and connected by a high-speed network. The two laboratories decided to purchase a new machine together in the framework of their upcoming merger which led to the creation of the Paris-Saclay Mechanics Laboratory (LMPS) 4  and to the ENS's move to Saclay. Meanwhile in nearby Châtenay-Malabry, two École Centrale Paris laboratories, the MSSMat and the Macroscopic Molecular Energy and Combustion Laboratory (EM2C) were thinking about purchasing their first scientific computational machine when the merger of Centrale Paris and Supélec took place. The combined influence of the LMT, the MSSMat and the LMPS led to CentraleSupélec and ENS Paris-Saclay – which had become neighbours – jointly applying for and being granted funding for computing resources in the framework of the 2015-2020 State-Region Plan Contract. This was used to purchase Fusion, the two institutions' first joint computing machine. Rather than building a dedicated room to host it in Châtenay-Malabry, the two institutions turned to the CNRS through the Idris which the IT community already knew very well.

Denis Girou was the director of the Idris at the time and fondly remembers the institutional excitement about this kind of project in 2013 when it was presented. "There was an extremely favourable national context for this kind of partnership because the Ministry had decided to curb the anarchic multiplication of computer rooms in higher education and research. Most of these were in poor technical condition so the Ministry chose to push pooling operations very strongly". At the same time the CNRS's management board was urging CNRS units to ''integrate the regional ecosystem and in this case  Paris-Saclay University which is currently being created ". And so, after four years of tripartite negotiations, an agreement was signed in early 2017 by the three institutions which led to the official inauguration of Fusion on February 23rd of the same year. A new, more powerful machine called Ruche that was also supported by the Region was to replace Fusion four years later. In the meantime, the shared Fusion/Ruche platform which the Saclay AI and Cloud@VirtualData platforms were added to what became the Paris-Saclay mesocentre at the university of the same name.

Pooling resources rapidly proved to bring economic and energy benefits. The Idris is reputed for its eco-responsibility as was recently illustrated by the project to  recycle waste heat from its Jean Zay supercomputer  to heat the equivalent of a thousand new homes. The current director Pierre-François Lavallée is clearly proud of the room's "Power Usage Effectiveness 5  of 1.28 compared to other laboratory machine rooms' figures of 1.8 or even 2". In practice, "if this equipment were located anywhere else than at the Idris, its electricity consumption would go up by 40 %". Hosting Fusion and then Ruche at the Idris quickly reduced the associated laboratories' budgets with LMPS alone estimated to have "divided the cost of hosting by three" as its director Pierre-Alain Boucard points out. This professor at ENS Paris-Saclay is also the mesocentre's scientific director for the ENS and declares himself impressed by the system's "intelligent energy management", particularly the job manager automatically switching off unused resources until computation requests are made and they are reactivated. This came in particularly useful when electricity prices soared in winter 2022. Above all, the use of the shared platform by laboratories is optimised which is essential given the environmental cost of manufacturing the resources which amounts to three quarters of its carbon footprint. Similar sorts of machines in laboratories are often underused but Ruche has a load rate of 60 to 70 % of its capacity. 

"A mesocentre isn't just the hardware"

Beyond the economies of scale that have been achieved, pooling computing machines at the Idris has benefited the scientific communities themselves, first and foremost through the positive impact on working conditions. The Idris's effective control of energy consumption is partly due to the robustness of its electrical infrastructure. Its two power lines, inverters, batteries and generator help prevent power cuts while cold water canisters are available for use so equipment can be stopped as effectively as possible if an incident does occur. Pierre-François Lavallée is delighted that his unit can "pass on the very high resilience level of the national centre to all our partners". This resilience is both material and human as Anne-Sophie Mouronval is very well aware. This research engineer has worked within the structure for twenty years, first at the MSSMat and then at the LMPS. She was present for all the mergers and pooling processes within the laboratory and now devotes a third of her working time on technical support for Ruche users, whatever institution they are affiliated to. She works on this support function along with eight other engineers from ENS Paris-Saclay, CentraleSupélec, Paris-Saclay University and the Maison de la Simulation. The latter joint laboratory's own computer was already hosted by the Idris. When it came to the end of its useful life the Maison's management preferred to contribute to the extension of Ruche rather than building its own new machine. As well as the Idris's "optimal environment for computing resources" the number and diversity of its engineers' profiles are also impressive. "The wealth of skills in the support team is a real strong point for our pooling system. The team is capable of helping users with simulations that use artificial intelligence and also with high-performance computing (HPC) 6  ".

This diversity of profiles testifies to the synergies created between a myriad of laboratories thanks to pooling. Some laboratories were more used to scientific computing, having been immersed in it since Fusion's early days, but other smaller laboratories that were less accustomed to working in this way for research purposes (certain humanities and social sciences units, for example) ended up joining the mesocentre. After just over ten years of existence Pierre-Alain Boucard admires the centre's "diversity of uses and scientific cultures which encourages us to exchange ideas to help mentalities and practices evolve and to keep calculations running to ensure the most effective use of the machine". Thomas Schmitt, a CNRS researcher working at the EM2C and CentraleSupélec's scientific manager for the mesocentre considers that "a mesocentre is not just the hardware. It also involves bringing people, knowledge and skills together which isn't possible when you're on your own". The mesocentre's versatility and flexibility for users have helped established its intermediary positions between laboratories and national supercomputers like  Jean Zay  or even European supercomputers. CentraleSupélec's scientific manager actually explains that the mesocentre can serve as a 'gateway' or even a 'springboard' towards such supercomputers.

"Advancing together to advance further"

Nearly ten years after Fusion's birth what then is the future for pooling computational resources on the Saclay plateau? In the short term, the mesocentre is planning to pool its massive data storage systems but Thomas Schmitt remains cautious as regards future developments: " We're not aiming to grow at all costs, we'd like to maintain a complete global system capable of responding to several demands at the same time". Although the Idris mesocentre will soon be reaching the limit of the centre's technical infrastructure for power supply and air conditioning to accommodate new machines, a major project to upgrade these technical infrastructures began in 2022 and should be completed by mid-2026. Pierre-François Lavallée considers the experience of pooling resources to have been so successful that he aims to take it further. His idea is to "develop another national mission alongside our national supercomputer work – hosting machines or services for the entire higher education and research sector". Until now the mesocentre has been of secondary importance behind Jean Zay. However this new mission is in the process of being officialised with the Idris planning the short-term purchase of a physical structure or 'cube' to provide effective and scalable hosting for computing and storage cabinets for user laboratories.

Whatever direction pooling computing equipment in the south of the Île-de-France region takes, Thomas Schmitt remains ever-enthusiastic "because advancing together means we'll be able to advance further".
