About clearing house

Clearing house uses trees as a means to improve urban living.

The CLEARING HOUSE initiative addresses the global challenge of creating resilient and livable cities by restoring degraded peri-urban environments, enhancing ecological connectivity, and improving human well-being, including public health and social inclusion. The project focuses on tree-based green infrastructure, termed Urban Forests as nature-based solutions (UF-NBS), which includes peri-urban forests, forested parks, and trees in public and private spaces. UF-NBS offer a range of ecosystem services, from enhancing biodiversity and providing recreational green spaces to regulating services like improving air quality and moderating the urban heat island effect. The CLEARING HOUSE initiative brings together China and Europe to analyze and develop the potential of nature-based solutions, particularly UF-NBS, for enhancing city resilience in the face of ecological, socio-economic, and well-being challenges.

Case Studies

"A business case study is a description of an actual situation, commonly involving a decision, a challenge, an opportunity, a problem or an issue faced by a person (or persons) in an organization. A case allows (the student) to step figuratively into the position of a particular decision maker. The strength of the case method of teaching is that students have to apply business principles to the issues raised and defend their recommended course of action to their fellow students."

This is written by professors primarily at Harvard Business School, so the focus is on case discussion. All the chapters discuss discussion leading, from how to do it to reflections on the first time one tried to do it. One chapter focuses on listening and questioning; another on the implicit teaching/learning contract, one on the peer observation process, one on participation and what you can tell from student participation, etc. One chapter discusses ethics in the discussion process. One chapter is about teaching technical material. The book is not prescriptive; rather, it is discursive.

Clearing house - collaborative learning in research, information-sharing and governance on how urban tree-based solutions support sino-european urban futures, description and objectives.

Trees and forests are a proven nature-based solution that contribute to sustainable urban development. Their potential for delivering ecosystem services, enhancing biodiversity and contributing to the wellbeing of urban societies is often underestimated and underused. CLEARING HOUSE provides evidence and tools that facilitate mobilising the full potential of urban forest-based solutions (UFBS) for rehabilitating, reconnecting and restoring urban ecosystems. UFBS comprise every measure a city can take to address urban development challenges by deploying tree-based ecosystems.

CLEARING HOUSE will review existing knowledge and will collect new data from large scale analyses as well as evidence emerging from the comparative analysis of ten case studies in Europe and China. Knowledge will relate to the social, economic and policy drivers of UFBS, their design and implementation, and their impacts on urban ecosystem and human wellbeing across continents. By relying on early adopted co-design and citizen science approaches, CLEARING HOUSE will ensure that its research programme exactly fits the demand of end-users, and engages stakeholders and scientists in problem-oriented knowledge generation. On the basis of this knowledge, CLEARING HOUSE then develops user-targeted outputs to support cities, planners, business and civil society in implementing UFBS, including online decision-support applications, benchmarking tools, and guidelines on the design, governance and management of UFBS, and on sustainable business models relating to them. Target group specific communication and dissemination activities complement the project. These include Sino-European science-policy symposia and measures reaching out to citizens including school children.

Case by CEU Business School Professor Featured by European Case Clearing House

Decorative image

“Bulldogs under the Carpet,” the case series authored by Maciej Kisilowski, has received a ‘featured case’ status by the European Case Clearing House (ECCH). ECCH, which distributed the case worldwide, also published an extensive interview with the Assistant Professor of Law and Public Management/Co-Director of Initiative for Regulatory Innovation. The interview focuses on the field research of the case and the various difficulties stemming from the highly controversial subject matter it tackles: the political struggle between the publisher of Poland’s largest daily and the Polish government. The interview is available at http://www.ecch.com/educators/ordering/selecting/featuredcases/BulldogsUndertheCarpet .

ECCH was particularly interested in the short movie produced by CEU featuring a dramatic reenactment of the key events of the case. “I believe that if my class does not create a mix of intellectual and emotional stimuli that make my participants feel like they are the characters of a case we discuss, if they don’t leave the room truly disturbed by the complexity and messiness of the managerial situation we analyzed, then I am failing in my job” Kisilowski says. “I think multimedia can make the task of creating such an ‘artificial reality’ much easier.”

Case studies are considered important pieces of scholarship in the business school world. “Bulldogs under the Carpet” is the first CEU case published by the prestigious European Case Clearing House, which publishes cases for schools including INSEAD and the London Business School. It is also the first film to receive “featured case” status for an institution that is new to case publishing.

Urban forests project CLEARING HOUSE shares final outcomes

european case study clearing house

The EU-funded project CLEARING HOUSE is coming to an end - the four-year Sino-European project focused on Urban Forests as Nature-based Solutions (UF-NbS) to improve urban living in Europe and China. Urban Forests are a subset of Nature-based Solutions which use tree-based urban ecosystems to address societal challenges, simultaneously providing benefits for people and biodiversity.

The CLEARING HOUSE project gathered twenty-six international partners joining efforts for collaborative research and knowledge exchange on the contributions of urban forests for sustainable and healthy cities. The project featured ten case studies across Europe and China with diverse approaches to tree-based green infrastructure including “street parks” to improve local biodiversity in Brussels , river parks in Barcelona and Krakow , coastal shelter-belt forests in Xiamen and many more .

In light of rapid urbanisation, environmental degradation, and climate change, CLEARING HOUSE examined how urban forests play a critical role in sustainable urban development and human well-being. Urban forests have the potential to provide habitat and serve as refuge for a wide range of species hence sustaining high urban biodiversity. Trees in cities can also mitigate heat waves and flooding events, while improving air quality and enhancing human health. CLEARING HOUSE also focused on social inclusion and on improving access to green spaces in communities where they are most needed such as in low-income neighbourhoods.

CLEARING HOUSE experts conducted an extensive knowledge review on UF-NbS, facilitated learning among a wide range of stakeholders in Europe and China, produced a set of decision support tools and guidance to design and implement UF-NbS, and increased societal awareness. Some outcomes of the project include:

A novel typology of urban forests as nature-based solutions

Guidelines for local authorities and other public organisations on implementing urban forests as nature-based solutions

‘City of Trees’ inspirational package for learning with trees and nature (for 10-14 years old)

Business models for urban trees as nature-based solutions

The CLEARING HOUSE project Spatial Information and Knowledge Hub

On 16 October, CLEARING HOUSE participated in the World Forum on Urban Forestry in Washington, DC, where it presented the project’s insights for the design and implementation of urban forests in Europe and China and discussed future collaboration across the world.

As it is near completion, CLEARING HOUSE now hosts several events to share its final outputs and key lessons for the deployment of the full potential of urban forests as Nature-based solutions for liveable and resilient cities. A four-webinar series will be delivered on 15, 17, 22 and 24 November drawing from the thematic guidelines developed by the project experts for successful urban forest implementation. Then, on 28-29 November, the project’s project event will be held in Brussels in a joint organisation with the REGREEN project . This major knowledge sharing event will engage a wide range of policy-makers, scientists and NbS practitioners to discuss opportunities and best practices for Urban Forests and Nature-based Solutions in shaping sustainable urban futures. Registration for these events is open, and anyone interested in urban forests and Nature-based Solutions is welcome to join!

Register for the four-webinar series and for the final event in Brussels. And for more information on the project, visit the CLEARING HOUSE website .

Famous quotes containing the words materials and/or distributed :

“ Herein is the explanation of the analogies, which exist in all the arts. They are the re-appearance of one mind, working in many materials to many temporary ends. Raphael paints wisdom, Handel sings it, Phidias carves it, Shakspeare writes it, Wren builds it, Columbus sails it, Luther preaches it, Washington arms it, Watt mechanizes it. Painting was called “silent poetry,” and poetry “speaking painting.” The laws of each art are convertible into the laws of every other. ” — Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)

“ Taking food alone tends to make one hard and coarse. Those accustomed to it must lead a Spartan life if they are not to go downhill. Hermits have observed, if for only this reason, a frugal diet. For it is only in company that eating is done justice; food must be divided and distributed if it is to be well received. ” — Walter Benjamin (1892–1940)

Get to know the CLEARING HOUSE project!

european case study clearing house

This is a guest blog from  CLEARING HOUSE H2020 . The CLEARING HOUSE project is a 4-year H2020 project that will analyse and develop the potential of urban forests as providers of nature-based solutions (UF-NbS) in particular – across China and Europe using 10 city case studies .

The project will compile, review and connect the existing knowledge on developing, managing and monitoring UF-NbS. It will also analyse governance, institutional and economic frameworks, as well as public perceptions and demands in China and Europe. During the project, the partners will facilitate a collaborative learning process on UF-NbS connecting practitioners, businesses, policymakers and scientists from China and Europe to generate and apply new knowledge on UF-NbS.

CLEARING HOUSE will also develop decision support tools and guidelines for cost-effectively  governing and managing NbS in general, and UF-NbS in particular, for enhancing urban resilience and human wellbeing, and has an overall goal of increasing awareness of the benefits of NbS and UF-NbS.

european case study clearing house

CLEARING HOUSE has 10 case studies across Europe and China. The European case studies are Barcelona, Brussels, Gelsenkirchen, Krakow and Leipzig-Halle. Their experiences will be shared and compared with those of Beijing, Hangzhou, Hong Kong – Guangzhou – Shenzhen, Huaibei, and Xiamen in China.

CLEARING HOUSE and COVID-19

During the COVID-19 pandemic and resulting quarantine, the importance of access to green spaces was clearer than ever. The partners decided to adapt their work plan and launched a new line of reflection and research with the objective to look at how the COVID-19 pandemic was changing both the professional perspective and citizens’ attitude on green spaces and urban forests. A survey was launched and showed that, although people feel less safe outside, generally they aim to spend more time in urban green spaces (more detailed findings can be read here ).

The project partners and guests contributed to the CLEARING HOUSE COVID Blog to discuss related topics and project results. The first article of the series sets the groundwork and describes the increased recognition of the role of urban green spaces and the challenges (mental and physical) that quarantine brought to those that don’t have access to a park or garden. The theme of access to green spaces runs throughout many of the articles, as the varying levels of accessibility illustrate differences in equality amongst citizens. It is clear that people from underprivileged backgrounds , higher social classes, and even royalty do not have the same concerns when trying to escape their homes for a while, a fact that was brought into sharp focus during quarantine. On the other hand, some articles focused on the message of resilience and described initiatives that honour those who played an important role in keeping us safe during the pandemic.

Stories from countries around Europe and beyond are included in the series, including accounts from Poland , Belgium, Germany , Spain and Canada . The format of each article was up to the author, sometimes presenting the findings of a study, the outcomes of a co-design workshop held by the project, and through the art of poetry !

Even during this difficult and constantly evolving situation, the CLEARING HOUSE partners are looking forward to continuing working together in order to enhance the resilience of cities facing major ecological, socio-economic, and human wellbeing challenges.

The CLEARING HOUSE project gathers 26 partners in Europe and China , and will provide evidence and tools that facilitate the mobilisation of the full potential of urban forest-based solutions (UFBS) for rehabilitating, reconnecting and restoring urban ecosystems.
