Biology Teacher Cover Letter Writing Tips

1. show your teaching experience.

When applying for a biology teaching position, it’s important to highlight your teaching experience. This can be done by describing specific classes that you’ve taught in the past, as well as the level of education you’ve taught (elementary, high school, college). If you don’t have any teaching experience, you can still mention how you’ve helped students learn in other positions you’ve held in the past.

2. Demonstrate your knowledge of biology

In your cover letter, it’s important to demonstrate that you have a strong understanding of biology. You can do this by providing examples of how you’ve used your knowledge of biology to help students in the past. For example, you might talk about a time when you had to explain a complex concept in a way that was easy for students to understand, or how you created a fun and interactive learning activity that got students excited about biology.

3. Show your passion for teaching

One of the best ways to show hiring managers that you’re passionate about teaching is by using phrases like “I love teaching” and “I’m excited to start teaching.” It’s also important to describe why you want to become a teacher. Some good reasons include wanting to help students learn and grow, making a difference in students’ lives, and having a career that’s both challenging and rewarding.

4. Proofread your cover letter

Proofreading your cover letter is one of the most important steps in ensuring that your application is free of errors. Make sure to spell-check and double-check that all the information is correct, including your contact information, the job you’re applying for, and the date.

When a hiring manager wants to know what you have done in the past, he refers to the resume.

But when it is information about what can do in the future for his company specifically), he will always prefer reading the cover letter.

The latter is expected to be a profound piece of writing which highlights an individual’s core thoughts, aspirations, and abilities – as they relate to working in a professional capacity.

You cannot do without sending in a cover letter, as there is a great chance that your resume will lose its appeal too.

So get your inner writer to the surface and begin writing a cover letter the likes of which a hiring manager has not seen before.

The only way to impress a hiring manager is when you give him what he wants, and how he wants it.

Veronica Bass 584 Windsor Ave Clarkson, KY 51221 (000) 142-8545

June 25, 2022

Mrs. Marta Lomani Principal Cristo Ray High School 2310 School Avenue Clarkson, KY 40218

Dear Mrs. Lomani:

My knack for interacting with students, coupled with more than five years of teaching experience, make me an ideal candidate for the biology teacher position at Cristo Ray High School.

Perhaps my biggest achievement has been to integrate both physics and chemistry subjects with the concepts of biology, creating a new subject (approved by the State of Kentucky), coined Integrated Sciences. As someone who does not have limitations to her creativity in developing curriculums and subject matters, I am sure that your school can benefit greatly from what I have to offer as a biology teacher.

Starting out as a teacher assistant in 2017, I have come a long way since the day I decided that teaching biology was my niche. After carefully experimenting with different scientific subjects, I stopped at this since my interest and teaching prowess was in this arena. Ever since then, I have worked diligently to study all concepts within this science thoroughly, making both human and plant biology something that I know everything about – that is, every documented detail.

But subject matter clarity is not my only qualification to work as a biology teacher. Realizing that teaching is a demanding occupation, I have enrolled myself in 4 different teacher training courses in the past, 3 of which were focused on teaching biology as a subject. Bringing this experience and training forward, I would like to offer my services in this role to Cristo Ray High School.

Next week, I will contact the school office to follow up on my job application. If you need to contact me in the interim, please feel free to call at (000) 142-8545.

Thank you for your time and consideration, and I look forward to hearing from you soon.

How to create a good cover letter for a biology teacher: free tips and tricks

The effective content of this document varies by profession since the selection criteria for candidates have a wide range in the labor market. Therefore, the tips below reflect winning and failing components directly for a biology teacher cover letter example. Use them to good advantage when drawing up your copy.

Write about the desire for ongoing training and interest in scientific research of your industry. It will show that you want to provide students with relevant information.

Do not say that you rely on existing knowledge and degree only. Sure, it is a robust foundation, but it runs the risk of becoming obsolete without proper support of the latest scientific discoveries.

It will be appropriate to say about non-standard or creative teaching methods to foster interest in the subject, make the lesson more interactive, and so on. Such an approach characterizes you as a motivated employee.

Do not write that you are afraid of experiments or do not consider them vital for the teaching process. A teacher who follows past practices will never compete with the innovator.

Mention strong communication skills that are necessary to adapt the material to the students’ level of knowledge, thereby remaining accessible and understandable.

Do not mention that your interaction with students is limited to classroom meetings only. It will show you as an indifferent executor of routine duties, which is not permissible for the education sector.

I never force anyone to study, because my mission is to arouse interest in the subject. To achieve it, I rely on my constant self-education, creative approach, strong communication skills. Constant self-education helps me to keep abreast of the latest research and discoveries in biology and integrate them into the learning process. Strong communication skills help me find common ground with students both during lessons and extracurricular issues.

Despite the position of a biology teacher, I am ready to be useful in matters not related to my subject. Thanks to problem-solving, collaboration, motivation, I build a trusting relationship with both students and colleagues, which positively affects the school environment. I want to meet the new generation, it’s rapidly changing needs, and requirements. Therefore, I do not just teach but actively apply lateral thinking, tolerance, positive reinforcement skills.

Experts' advice on writing your biology teacher resume experience

While the excitement and motivation for writing your biology teacher resume was present in the first hour (or so), you now find yourself staring at the blank page.

The resume experience section is the one that allows you to make a memorable impression by matching job requirement with your past jobs and accomplishments.

To help you write this resume section, here are four mistakes you need to avoid:

  • Listing every job you have had so far, including the irrelevant ones. Before that, consider each of your past roles based on relevancy to the role. It may be the case that the job you had 15 years ago may have taught you invaluable skills that are appropriate for the role;
  • Including irrelevant work experience items . Those are past jobs that aren't linked with the role you're applying for (or so they seem). Consider how your past jobs will serve your professional presentation: will they be filling in a gap in your work history, or just taking up space?
  • Focusing on responsibilities instead of accomplishments. Your biology teacher resume shouldn't just be telling recruiters what you did in the past - as it's most often the case that candidates have had similar responsibilities. But, rather, the experience section should showcase the success you've attained in each past role, thanks to your unique skill set;
  • Consider listing just your professional experience. Any role you've had in the past - e.g. volunteering, internships, etc. - can make it into your biology teacher resume experience section. Make sure to include it alongside numbers and results.

Two more things you need to remember about your resume experience section.

The first are keywords. Or those specific job requirements that are crucial for the role . Ensure you've integrated them across your experience section to get sorted closer to the ideal candidate profile by the Applicant Tracker System (ATS).

The second are action verbs. Each of your experience bullets should start with a strong action verb , followed by your specific skill and your on the job achievements. Follow this formula to hint to recruiters what your unique value as a professional is.

Still with us? In the next section, we will show you how industry-leading professionals have avoided the four most common mistakes, while integrating keywords and action verbs in their experience section.

What if my biology teacher experience doesn't match the requirements?

You've just graduated from college and may have no real world job experience . What should you include within your resume then?

Instead of making up information or adding irrelevant past jobs (e.g. your on-campus work during freshman year), you can:

  • Shift the focus from your professional experience to your community impact with your volunteer work. This would showcase numerous soft skills you've built over time (e.g. interpersonal communication);
  • Highlight the projects you've completed, as part of your coursework, or, on your own. Thus, you will align your technical background with recruiters' requirements;
  • Consider spotlighting your transferrable skills. Or, what lessons and talents your current professional and personal experience has taught you and how they could benefit your potential employers;
  • Even if you've had a few months of internship experience, that is relevant for the role, make sure to include this. Recruiters do care about the years of experience you happen to have, but, at the end of the day, your profile would also be assessed based on role alignment.

Your biology teacher resume top one third: choosing between a resume summary or an objective

The top third of your resume is crucial, as recruiters might focus only on this section rather than reading the entire document. Therefore, it's important to carefully decide whether to include a resume summary or an objective.

  • The resume summary encapsulates your most significant experiences, key achievements, and skills in the field. Ideal for candidates with substantial relevant experience, the summary previews what recruiters will find in the rest of your resume.
  • The resume objective outlines your professional aspirations. It describes your career goals for the coming years and how you envision your role evolving in the prospective company. The resume objective is suitable if you have less professional experience and wish to emphasize various soft skills such as motivation, vision, and planning.

This guide will detail the essential elements of a biology teacher's resume, offering insights into the significance of each section and tips for optimizing your resume to capture the interest of hiring committees and secure your next teaching position.

1. Contact Information

At the top of your resume, ensure your contact information is up-to-date and accessible. This section is the gateway for potential employers to initiate contact for interviews or further discussions.

How to List Contact Information for a Biology Teacher Resume

Include your full name , phone number , email address , and optionally, your home address or just the city and state. Consider adding a LinkedIn profile to enhance your digital presence.

2. Objective Statement

The Objective Statement serves as a concise introduction to your resume, outlining your career goals and suitability for the biology teacher role. Craft this statement to reflect your passion for biology and education, tailoring it to the specific position you're applying for.

Example: " Passionate Biology teacher with a decade of experience in fostering student engagement and academic excellence, seeking to contribute to XYZ High School's science department with innovative lesson planning and a commitment to student success."

Focus on what you can offer to the educational institution, emphasizing your teaching prowess and knowledge of biology.

3. Education and Qualifications

This section is pivotal, as it demonstrates your academic background and qualifications that qualify you for the teaching role. List your degrees in reverse chronological order, including any relevant certifications or specialized training that enhance your teaching capabilities.

Highlight your understanding of biology concepts, laboratory skills, and any continuous professional development activities that show your commitment to staying current in the field.

4. Teaching Experience

Detail your teaching history, starting with the most recent position. Include the institution's name, location, your role, and the dates of employment. Use bullet points to describe your responsibilities and achievements, such as curriculum development, innovative teaching methods, and any positive outcomes like improved student performance.

Leadership roles and mentorship experiences should also be featured here to demonstrate your capacity for contributing to the educational community beyond the classroom.

5. Skills and Proficiencies

Enumerate the skills that make you an exceptional biology teacher, such as your scientific knowledge, laboratory expertise, and pedagogical techniques. Also, include soft skills like communication, patience, and adaptability, which are essential for effective teaching.
