AFL 1501 ASSIGNMENT 3

Profile image of ntoyakithi mbongwe

language between the buffalo, lions and the crocodile on how they live and find ways to make a living in the Kruger National Park. Now this video shows clearly the language of caring for and protecting your kind, where the buffalos cared and protected the buffalo calf. The video starts off by what seems to be parents walking along side the river with their calf. Then the young lions crutch as they prepare themselves to make a meal out of the calf and snatch it away from its parents. The young lions are then successful in doing so. What's amazing and a mystery to me and how the parents disappeared to fetch a herd of buffalo to help them rescue the calf. What's mysterious to me is the unknown and unseen language that says " come help us, our calf is in danger. " All we see is a herd of buffalo to the rescue; it's amazing how animals have their own way of communicating as seen in the herd of buffalo which shows clearly that they were fetched by the parents to the calf. While the young lions worked together to concur the calf in the river they were not aware that they were not the only ones after this calf and that the one crocodile had also found an opportunity for feasting. While the one crocodile and the young lions fight for the calf the herd of buffalos are on their way to rescue the calf and eventually manages to rescue the calf. On this video I learnt and saw how animals behave toward each other and how they can stand together for survival or for a feast. The young lions did not fear the herd of buffalo that were approaching, even when one young lion was tossed in the air the others persisted to attempt to feast on the calf until one by one they were defeated. On the other hand the buffalos also came in a force to tackle the young lions together to rescue the calf and together the stood in victory and the calf was safe. The one crocodile was defeated because it had no support system and gave in. What is different in the way you told the story? I used reference to get the true story line of the video and from the one line I used from Wikipedia I then wrote my own view of the video with reference to that line as seen above. I also tried to relate the video to my understanding of the module and the head line of unit 2 how language signifies attitudes and world-view. Where the world view would be the disbelief the people were in with amazement. What is the same? What's the same is that we all watched the same video, and recognised that this was indeed a battle amongst animals, buffalo, lions and crocodile. What do you think this means? in terms of who you are? I think this means I should understand the requirements of the assignment and the module to help me respond to the video as set for this assignment and that I am a person who seeks for reference for understanding before my own interpretation. I had to watch the video at least 3 times in order for me to understand what the assignment requested from me without reading what others had written. After that I read other people's views to help me respond to the assignment. Reflect on the words "We can only manage the world once it has been storified?. I can be almost sure that a video like that is not likely to be captured and you will not know what animals are bound to do, at what time, where and when. Just like in the reality of humans we often say that people are unpredictable and in this case so are animals. So these words prove that when something is storified that's the only way we can manage the world from that story (video). The battle between these animals would be unknown if these people were not at that place, at that time and at that right moment when that battle was to take place and they became aware of it to capture the moment and the story was told of the Battle in Kruger through Youtube.

The article examines the popular YouTube clip Battle at Kruger and its National Geographic spin-off Caught on safari: The battle at Kruger. In seeking to account for the clip's popularity and National Geographic's motivations for making the hour-long feature, the author draws on the burgeoning studies of wildlife film in an effort to contextualise this new ‘eye-witness’ approach within the traditions of documentary films focusing on nature – particularly animals. Furthermore, do the clip and its online popularity suggest a new direction for wildlife documentary in an age of increasingly advanced filming technologies and digital broadcast platforms?

Blind Men and An Elephant

Most of us see and learn about animals not by means of encounters with real ones but mediated through computer or television screens, zoos or museums, school books and other informative prints. At the same time we meet animal inspired commodities in every part of our daily lives; be it an elephant in a children's comic book , the tiger as corporate logo of a fuel station or a smiling cannibal pig comic promoting special meat offers. Although images or figurative reproductions of animals signify and carry meaning they do not necessarily narrate about and relate to real-life situations of the animals used as model. Other than commodities due to their stylistic conventions, imagery and narratives of animal documentaries suggest a representation of the Real to us. In latter film genre very specific meanings are given to animal presentations often and foremost trough textual explanations, whether by an off-screen narrator, a presenter, human protagonist(s) or captions on screen. Paradoxically, now, the number of wildlife films annually increases with images representing intact natural landscapes while real wildlife vanishes at a high rate. Conservationists termed the present age the era of the great 6th extinction. Thus, seemingly those films are becoming postmodern natural history museums. In opposite direction annual numbers of human-bred pet and industrial animal individuals are growing. Some of latter animals we treat like family members, others like metal cars created, manufactured and de-fractured by our latest technologies. Interestingly but the since WWII exponentially increasing overall number of domestic and wild animals being physically exploited by humans for purposes of consumption, science, and entertainment is rarely displayed. How do filmic animal representations of 'reality' affect our behavior and attitudes outside filmic experiences? In an age where we are surrounded by factual content created to narrate about animals and their relationship with us how come we prefer not being informed about the fate of most of them in the real world? How come a majority of humans rejects animal abuse and commodification but disconnects itself from the same practices undertaken for their benefit in consumption and welfare - regardless whether in animal factories, laboratories, by means of environmental destruction or in entertainment?

Stephen 'tWitch' Boss and Allison Holker's 3 Kids: All About Weslie, Maddox and Zaia

The late Stephen "tWitch" Boss was close with his three children Weslie, Maddox and Zaia

assignment 3 afl1501

Stephen "tWitch" Boss was a family man first and foremost.

The former Ellen Degeneres Show DJ died by suicide at age 40 , his wife of nine years, Allison Holker Boss, confirmed to PEOPLE on Dec. 14, 2023. "He was the backbone of our family, the best husband and father, and an inspiration to his fans," she shared in a statement.

Boss and Holker Boss shared three children: Weslie Renae, 16, Maddox Laurel, 8, and Zaia, 4. The couple first met in 2010 on So You Think You Can Dance and married three years later. Holker Boss was already mom to daughter Weslie, whom Boss adopted. The couple welcomed their first son together, Maddox, in 2016, followed by daughter Zaia in 2019.

A few weeks before Boss' death, the parents of three appeared on Jennifer Hudson 's eponymous talk show and spoke about the possibility of having more kids . "I think we would love to start trying for another one," said Holker Boss.

Boss agreed, saying, "We do. I love the little babies, I love them. It's a constant conversation."

On Father Day's in 2022, he wrote on Instagram that " being dad is my favorite earthly assignment ."

In a May 2023 interview, Holker Boss spoke with PEOPLE about how she and her kids have supported each other in the months following Boss' death . "I always want to make sure that they see me really strong for them, but it's been amazing to see that my kids are also there for me now," she said.

She also said that the kids still feel connected to their father, explaining that they believe Boss is now among the stars. "So we go out there, and we talk to him. I've told them if they ever need him, he's always listening. He's guiding and he's protecting. We still feel his presence with us."

Here's everything to know about Stephen "tWitch" Boss' three kids.

Weslie Renae Fowler, 16

Holker Boss welcomed daughter Weslie Renae on May 26, 2008, with a previous partner. Boss later adopted Weslie and the two shared a special bond.

Weslie is currently a high school sophomore. "She's so cool. She's such a good kid. She's so respectful," Holker Boss told Jennifer Hudson of her daughter in November 2022.

Weslie grew up playing soccer and joined her high school's team. In an Instagram post celebrating Title IX's 50th anniversary, Weslie shared a few photos of herself on the soccer field and wrote: "Soccer is where I can channel my focus in something I truly love and form bonds that last a lifetime."

Off the field, she has also joined her parents at red carpet premieres and events. In October 2022, she attended the premiere of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever with her mom and dad.

Like many kids her age, Weslie is also active on social media (though her Instagram is managed by her parents). In 2020 — when she was just 12 years old — Weslie responded to a user who asked why she "dresses like a boy" with a TikTok , saying, "Patriarchy is dead. Just because I don't wear dresses and bright pink doesn't mean I'm dressing like a boy."

She continued her response with, "This is my style. I wear comfy clothes and darker colors and just because I dress like that doesn't mean I'm dressing like a boy and it doesn't mean that boys or girls are defined by certain things because of their gender. It doesn't mean anything and just because you can't open your eyes doesn't mean I'm about to change."

Holker Boss later praised Weslie for sticking up for herself . The proud mom opened up to PEOPLE about the incident, explaining, "What we taught her is by you addressing it, it almost releases it from you. You don't have to hold on to those negative comments ."

She added, "We didn't tell her to make that video, that was of her own accord, but what we have told her is, 'Are you addressing it? You don't have to hold onto that pain anymore.' And hopefully that person sees it and realizes, 'Oh, wow, maybe I should look in on myself.' "

The high school student isn't afraid to speak about other social causes either. When the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in July 2022, Weslie joined her mother for an Instagram video where they listed all the things a 14-year-old girl wasn't allowed to do as a U.S. citizen. The video concluded by asking how, if she were to get pregnant, would she be able to take care of a baby if she is not "legally able to independently to take care of herself" at that age.

In February 2023, Weslie shared her first social media post since Boss' death . In her TikTok video, the teenager posed in front of a mirror, showing off photos of her and Boss, which were visible inside her phone case.

She captioned the video: "i miss u."

On the first anniversary of Boss' death, Weslie posted an emotional tribute to her dad, sharing that she was reminiscing on their " beautiful memories ."

"A year of missing you, but not a single day goes by without thinking of what you’ve given to the world. Your love, guidance, and wisdom continue to inspire me. Missing warm hugs, your wisdom, and the sound of your voice," she wrote.

"Though the pain of your absence remains, I find serenity in the beautiful memories we shared. You were my father, my superhero, and my best friend, and my biggest advocate. Your love and support shaped me into the person I am today," Weslie continued.

While talking to PEOPLE in August 2024, Holker Boss said that she and Weslie are " best friends. "

"We lean on each other in our high moments, but also our low moments, when we're really emotional or triggered or going through something," she said. "I'm really, really grateful that she sees me and I see her. We listen to each other and we communicate."

Maddox Laurel Boss, 8

On March 27, 2016, Boss and Holker Boss welcomed son Maddox Laurel. He was born on Easter Sunday and the new parents told PEOPLE in a statement at the time that the birth " was truly an unforgettable moment ."

As an infant, Maddox was already showing that he had inherited his parents' dancing genes. " Our baby dances every night ," Holker Boss told PEOPLE a few months after his birth. "He's already a popper. He loves hip-hop music. He jams out every single night. It's incredible. We actually had our baby to the song 'Push It' by Salt-N-Pepa, so he's musically inclined, and he's got a lot of rhythm."

And as the years have passed, Maddox has participated in plenty of Boss family dance parties . In August 2022, he even joined his parents at the season finale of So You Think You Can Dance — the very show where Boss and Holker Boss first met. Following the finale, Holker Boss shared photos of their family outing on Instagram, writing in part, " This show just means the world to us !! It feels like home!! And now bringing our son Maddox to see was just perfect!!!"

The same month, Maddox started first grade. Boss marked his son's first day of school on Instagram , writing, "First day First grade!! The time is going by too fast but little Boss you are taking the world by storm. Go get em mane!!! We love you Maddox."

In September 2022, Holker Boss opened up about the back-to-school season in the Boss household, calling it "beautiful chaos." She continued, "Our kids are thriving. They're so excited to be back in school , back into their sports and activities. There's a lot of excitement and nerves, but as a parent, it's so rewarding, you watch [your kids] go through all of the emotions. It's been a really cool time."

Holker Boss put together a small celebration at home for Maddox's seventh birthday in March 2023 that included presents and lots of candy.

"Happy 7th birthday my sweet sweet Maddox!" the mom-of-three wrote on Instagram. "Oh I love you so much and couldn't be more proud or grateful to be your mommy. I'm so proud of you! You are brave, strong, endearing, loving, and full of joy. You have this beautiful passion for life that brings light into every room you walk (run, jump, fly) into."

She continued: "We had an incredible talk the other night and we talked about how powerful you are and that we share a forever bond… your the sun and I'm your moon.. pulling for each other forever and ever!"

Zaia Boss, 4

The Boss crew became a family of five with the arrival of daughter Zaia in November 2019.

Boss and Holker Boss' older children adjusted to Zaia's arrival well, with the DJ telling PEOPLE in 2020, "Weslie's always just been the best big sister, even with Maddox before. It's like having a built-in babysitter. And with her new sister, she's also eager to help. Very, very helpful. And Maddox is really excited."

When Zaia was just 16 months old, however, she ended up in a leg cast after "going down a slide in the park." Holker Boss told PEOPLE about the accident, "They said she's so little that [they'd] cast her up just to be sure. So it was only a couple of weeks, but either way, it's really sad. We see this tiny little baby in a cast , but it's also kind of cute, in a weird way."

To celebrate Zaia's 2nd birthday in 2021, Boss penned a heartfelt tribute to his little girl on Instagram , writing, "Happy birthday Zaia!!! This little Boss princess is 2 years old today and already making her mark on the world and our hearts. My sweetpea, you are truly one of a kind. With each day that goes by, you astonish and inspire us………and demand that Elmo always be on the TV. IG FAM please help me wish Baby Z a happy birthday."

Just ahead of her 3rd birthday in 2022, Zaia and her family dressed up as the Addams Family for Halloween . Mom and Dad fittingly took on the roles of Morticia and Gomez, while Weslie and Maddox transformed into Wednesday and Pugsley, respectively. As for Zaia? She turned into the most adorable Pubert — mustache and all.

Yankees could target versatile veteran as Jazz Chisholm replacement

Author Photo

There's a very real chance the New York Yankees will need to find a replacement for Jazz Chisholm with a stint on the injured list looming.

After an MRI revealed further damage to Chisholm's left elbow after injuring it sliding into home plate Monday night, the Yankees may be without the star infielder for significant time.

If they wanted to look outside the organization for a potential replacement while upgrading the bench, they could pursue Amed Rosario, who was just designated for assignment by the Los Angeles Dodgers .

This was a bit surprising considering his solid season with a 113 OPS + in 81 games. Though, the Dodgers needed to make room for the return of Mookie Betts.

Rosario has been a previous target of the Yankees before during last offseason. However, the veteran opted to sign with the Tampa Bay Rays.

Rosario has experience playing three infield positions as well as the corner outfield. He would bring a quality bat to the bench while providing depth all over the field.

The Yankees are expecting veteran Jon Berti to being a rehab assignment soon, but they may not be able to afford to wait until he's fully healed.

A team higher in the waiver order might beat the Yankees to it, but Rosario makes a lot of sense as the Yankees look to find a replacement for Chisholm.

Tim Walz's military record: What to know about potential VP's National Guard service

assignment 3 afl1501

Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris selected Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her running mate on Tuesday, choosing a progressive yet plain-spoken VP candidate from America’s heartland to help her win over rural, white voters.

“I’m pleased to share that I’ve made my decision: Minnesota Governor Tim Walz will join our campaign as my running mate,” Harris said via text to supporters. “Tim is a battle-tested leader who has an incredible track record of getting things done for Minnesota families. I know that he will bring that same principled leadership to our campaign, and to the office of the vice president.”

We look at Walz, a 60-year-old U.S. Army National Guard veteran, and his military career over the years.

More: Tim Walz is Kamala Harris' VP pick: Minnesota governor named running mate: Live updates

How long was Walz in the military?

Walz served in the military for 24 years, enlisting in the Nebraska National Guard at 17 in 1981 and then transferring to the Minnesota National Guard in 1996. He retired in 2005 to begin his successful run for the U.S. House, representing Minnesota as command sergeant major, among the highest ranks for enlisted soldiers. His battalion went on to deploy to Iraq shortly after Walz's retirement.

Walz specialized in heavy artillery and had proficiency ribbons in sharpshooting and hand grenades.

But during the 21 years that Walz spent working with large artillery pieces, he suffered hearing loss and tinnitus in both ears, Minnesota Public Radio reported. He was allowed to continue his service after undergoing surgery, which partially resolved his hearing loss.

Where did Walz serve, and what did he do in the National Guard?

During his service, Walz responded to natural disasters, including floods and tornadoes in Minnesota and Nebraska, and was deployed overseas for months at a time, according to MPR.

In 2003, he was sent to Italy, where he served with the European Security Force to support the war in Afghanistan. He was also stationed in Norway for joint training with other NATO militaries.

Walz told MPR that he reenlisted in the National Guard after the September 11 attacks but never saw active combat in his years in the military.

Stars and Stripes reported in 2020 that Walz credited his Army experience with helping him steer Minnesota through the COVID-19 pandemic as governor.

As governor of Minnesota, Walz is commander in chief of the 13,000-soldier Minnesota National Guard. “I’m certainly proud of my military service, but it’s one piece of me,” he told Minnesota Public Radio in 2018. “It doesn’t define me.”

Dodgers DFA Utility Man With Intriguing Slash Line; Should Cardinals Take Action?

  • St. Louis Cardinals

The St. Louis Cardinals have been notoriously bad at hitting left-handed pitchers this season and it doesn't seem to be getting much better.

Following the injury of veteran Matt Carpenter, the Cardinals recalled rising star Jordan Walker to the show in hopes that his recently productive right-handed bat could help the lineup improve against LHP.

Even though the trade deadline has passed, St. Louis could make a surprising last-second addition to improve its offensive struggles against lefties.

Los Angeles Dodgers utility man Amed Rosario was designated for assignment Monday to make room on the roster for eight-time All-Star Mookie Betts, who is returning from a fractured left hand he suffered back in June.

Rosario has logged a .305/.331/.415 slash line with 23 extra-base hits including two home runs and 28 RBIs in 81 games played this season between his time spent with the Tampa Bay Rays and Dodgers.

The 28-year-old certainly isn't a power hitter by any means but he has the potential to make consistent contact and get on base, which could complement the Cardinals' style of small ball. Plus, he's a right-handed hitter, so perhaps he could help increase the team's batting average against LHP.

Throughout his eight-season career, Rosario has batted .275 with 265 extra-base hits including 62 home runs, 362 RBIs and a .711 OPS.

Sure, Rosario could be a match for the Cardinals offense but his stats don't stand out enough to make it worth it for St. Louis to replace him as a position player.

It would probably be best for St. Louis to continue to work with what they have instead of looking for outside help but who knows? Perhaps the Cardinals could find a way to bring Rosario in for specific pinch-hitting scenarios.
