Over 6 weeks you will practice identifying problems and synthesising issue trees. You will use recognised strategic frameworks to complete analysis and develop solutions. Throughout the course you will build your capabilities in problem definition, communications and strategic analysis, all culminating in a credential from RMIT University when you complete the course.

Our Strategic Problem Solving course is ideal for:

Throughout this course, you will:

Milestone: Develop a strategy on a page and conduct a SWOT analysis to appraise your organisations approach.

• Consider ways to use organisational criteria in evaluating and providing rational for ideas 
• Review principles and frameworks for implementing, operationalising and socialising recommendations 

Milestone: Recommend a response to the problem statement, using relevant criteria to justify it (e.g., feasibility, cost-benefit analysis, alignment with the organisation’s strategy) and summarise the next steps.

Problem solving skills are essential to every organisation today.

Needs and objectives drive commercial business and government. However, until you can satisfy a need or meet an objective you have a problem.

One of the most valuable contributions you make is analysing and solving the problems of clients, customers and stakeholders. You also need to show others how the problem was identified and analysed – and how potential solutions were evaluated.

Because problem solving is not a black art. More problems are solved every day through the application of critical thinking skills than through hunches and intuition. In fact, when hunches and intuition do lead to solutions they are invariably based on the subconscious application of specific techniques.

In this training workshop a proven set of analytical and creative thinking techniques are taught that can be applied to any problem in any workplace.

You can now attend this course remotely.

The course will still be practical, interactive and delivered live by senior instructors with 15 – 25+ years’ experience with the skills to make the intensive learning experience interesting and enjoyable.

Introduction and Course Review

In this session we spend the first portion of the day getting to know participants and discussing what is going to take place during the training. Employees will even have the opportunity to identify their personal learning objectives and gain personal skills as we work through the session.

Six Ways to Approach a Verdict

In this part of the training, participants are going to learn about the six thinking hats, and they will practice using the hats during a problem solving dialogue. DeBono is well known for the development of this thinking process and is used in organisations across the world today.

Decision Making Case Study

The next step of the training will be spent working on problems with the Peerless Data Corp. Participants will work in small groups to solve five different difficulties, and will be rewarded based on the quality of their judgments. This is an interactive activity helping participants to use many of the skills discussed.

What’s Problem Solving?

Participants will investigate precisely what decision making and problem solving means. We’ll also look at the difference between data and facts, various kinds of conclusions, and common decision making snares. We also empower employees to be more creative and work towards creative options.

Thinking Outside the Box

Participants will discuss methods to support creative thinking, including the random word technique and brainstorming. We provide new strategies for thinking outside the box. Participants can practice using some of the skills with further activities.

This exercise will ask participants to imagine that they’re in a disaster situation. It’ll give them a framework to solve the issue and also make determinations. As we do this activity in small groups we come back together and compare outcomes to the activity, increasing the effectiveness of the problem solving activity.

The Problem Solving Toolkit

This session will look at eleven basic problem solving tools and two complex tools (the gradients of agreement and fish-bone analysis). Subsequently, participants will apply these tools to a case study in a group discussion with the whole team. We raise knowledge of problem solving steps and problem solving tools.

The Problem Solving Model

During this session, participants will learn about a three-stage model that they’ll apply to most issues. They will also have a chance to use the model to two scenarios. Future Problem Solving is typically offered as an extracurricular activity or elective course, and it is open to students of all ages and grade levels.

In my experience, many organizations rush to solutions without fully understanding the root cause of their issues . To avoid this pitfall, I recommend using these root-cause analysis techniques:

• The 5 Whys : This simple yet powerful method involves asking “Why?” five times to dig deeper into the problem’s origin.
• Fishbone Diagram : Also known as the Ishikawa diagram , this visual tool helps identify potential causes of a problem across different categories.

Once you’ve identified the root cause, it’s essential to frame a clear problem statement. This statement should be specific, measurable, and actionable.

For example, instead of saying “Customer satisfaction is low”, a better problem statement would be “Customer satisfaction scores have decreased by 15% in the past quarter, primarily due to longer response times in our customer service department”.

• SWOT Analysis SWOT Analysis is a versatile problem-solving technique that I frequently use when helping organizations identify strategic opportunities. It involves analyzing Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats . • Pareto Analysis Also known as the 80/20 rule , Pareto Analysis is a powerful tool for prioritizing problems . I’ve found it particularly useful in manufacturing environments.
