My parents are my motivation to be a hard-working, determined, and versatile student

OP lc987 1 / 1   Nov 30, 2008   #2 Prompt#2: Tell us about a personal quality, talent, accomplishment, contribution or experience that is important to you. What about this quality or accomplishment makes you proud, and how does it relate to the person you are? I grew up as an extremely shy person with very low self-confidence. I had trouble speaking to large crowds and interacting with unfamiliar people. All my life I have lived in a densely populated Chinese neighborhood in Oakland, California. I was raised with Chinese traditions and my parents expected me to earn good marks at school. My parents applied me to both an American school and a Chinese school. I attended both schools and found it hard sometimes to balance the schoolwork that came with it. My American school was located in the center of Chinatown and was populated with mostly children from Chinese backgrounds. I always felt isolated attending this school because everyone had similar customs and interests. I did not grow up exposed to a very diverse environment. My Chinese school was only concerned with academic achievement. The teachers practiced strict discipline and expected nothing but the best. During school, I was too shy to raise my hand during class to respond to the teacher's questions. I began liking my American school even more because the teachers would make us present in front of the class. I was sometimes reluctant to present, but other times I found it fun and it really helped shed my fear of speaking to large crowds. When it was time for me to advance to high school, my parents wanted me to transfer to a school in another city. They felt that this school would present me with better opportunities and a better education. I had to leave all my friends behind and move on to this strange and unfamiliar school. I immediately noticed that the people here were different and came from a diverse background. Everyone was unique and practiced a variety of customs that were strange to me and I was exposed to an entirely new environment. I made friends with some of these people and they have been a huge my part of my life ever since. They have helped me overcome my shyness by making me attend key club and attending their weekly meetings. We found delight in servicing our community; the gratifying feeling of helping people was our reward. A simple "thank you" was enough to make my day and my self-confidence grew knowing I made the community better even by just a little. I admit I am still a little shy making friends and talking to large crowds, but I feel that I have improved with the help of my friends. I feel that my life is like a sidewalk and the people I perceive on this sidewalk make up a little part of me. My friends are walking with me on this sidewalk hand-in-hand helping me cross the unfamiliar intersection. Need some last minute revisions before I turn it in...

Tsunamela 2 / 2   Nov 30, 2008   #3 I revised Prompt 1 a little. Try talking more about how the experience made YOU feel. Great job, though. and Good Luck! :D (...) READ ABOVE (the first paragraph of the first essay) My parents faced adversity growing up in China, their native-born country. My mother was raised along with her three sisters and two brothers. She struggled getting an adequate education due to tuition fees her family struggled to pay for. Her family managed to muster the money for her to get an education for seven years before she dropped out. She began working to make sure that there were better opportunities for her siblings. My father was more fortunate than my mother; his family was not as large as my mom's and his family had enough savings for tuition fees. He finished high school at the top of his class, but he could not manage to land a good job because he did not have the proper relations with those who had power. My parents want me to receive the education they never had and just like my parents with her siblings, I want my little sister to surpass me. I will make sure of this by helping my sister with her schoolwork making sure she takes harder classes to challenge herself. When the time comes, I will overlook and help her with college applications. As I grew up, I watched my frustrated mother get rejected from job after job because she did not graduate from high school. My father recently had to accept a reduced wage due to financial problems at his restaurant. Despite all this, my parents try to involve themselves in all aspects of my life even though they have to work long hours. They always tell me to prioritize what is important. They always tell me to do my schoolwork and chores first before anything else. I wish I could say that I followed them obediently every time, but sometimes I would rebel and laze around. But as high school started, I began to prioritize what is important more and more until it became a natural process. Their words of advice will stay with me through my whole life. My parents are my motivation to be a hard-working, determined, and versatile student who is ready for college.

parents motivation essay

After living in Texas briefly, my mom moved in with my aunt in Minnesota, where she helped raise my cousins while my aunt and uncle worked. My mom still glances to the building where she first lived. I think it’s amazing how she first moved here, she lived in a small apartment and now owns a house.

My dad’s family was poor. He dropped out of elementary school to work. My dad was the only son my grandpa had. My dad thought he was responsible to help his family out, so he decided to leave for Minnesota   because  of  many  work opportunities .

My parents met working in cleaning at the IDS  C enter during night shifts. I am their only child, and their main priority was not leaving me alone while they worked. My mom left her cleaning job to work mornings at a warehouse. My dad continued his job in cleaning at night.

My dad would get me ready for school and walked me to the bus stop while waiting in the cold. When I arrived home from school, my dad had dinner prepared and the house cleaned. I would eat with him at the table while watching TV, but he left after to pick up my mom from work.

My mom would get home in the afternoon. Most memories of my mom are watching her lying down on the couch watching her  n ovelas  –  S panish soap operas  – a nd falling asleep in the living room. I knew her job was physically tiring, so I didn’t bother her.

Seeing my parents work hard and challenge Mexican customs influence my values today as a person. As a child, my dad cooked and cleaned, to help out my mom, which is rare in Mexican culture. Conservative Mexicans believe men are superior to women; women are seen as housewives who cook, clean and obey their husbands. My parents constantly tell me I should get an education to never depend on a man. My family challenged  machismo , Mexican sexism, by creating their own values and future.

My parents encouraged me to, “ ponte  las  pilas ” in school, which translates to “put on your batteries” in English. It means that I should put in effort and work into achieving my goal. I was taught that school is the key object in life. I stay up late to complete all my homework assignments, because of this I miss a good amount of sleep, but I’m willing to put in effort to have good grades that will benefit me. I have softball practice right after school, so I try to do nearly all of my homework ahead of time, so I won’t end up behind.

My parents taught me to set high standards for myself. My school operates on a 4.0-scale. During lunch, my friends talked joyfully about earning a 3.25 on a test. When I earn less than a 4.25, I feel disappointed. My friends reacted with, “You should be happy. You’re extra . ” Hearing that phrase flashbacks to my parents seeing my grades. My mom would pressure me to do better when I don’t earn all 4.0s

Every once in  awhile , I struggled with following their value of education. It can be difficult to balance school, sports and life. My parents think I’m too young to complain about life. They don’t think I’m tired, because I don’t physically work, but don’t understand that I’m mentally tired and stressed out. It’s hard for them to understand this because they didn’t have the experience of going to school.

The way I could thank my parents for their sacrifice is accomplishing their American dream by going to college and graduating to have a professional career. I visualize the day I graduate college with my degree, so my  family  celebrates by having a carne  asada (BBQ) in the yard. All my friends, relatives, and family friends would be there to congratulate me on my accomplishments.

As teenagers, my parents worked hard manual labor jobs to be able to provide for themselves and their family. Both of them woke up early in the morning to head to work. Staying up late to earn extra cash. As teenagers, my parents tried going to school here in the U.S .  but weren’t able to, so they continued to work. Early in the morning now, my dad arrives home from work at 2:30 a.m .,  wakes up to drop me off at school around 7:30 a.m . , so I can focus on studying hard to earn good grades. My parents want me to stay in school and not prefer work to  head on their  same path as them. Their struggle influences me to have a good work ethic in school and go against the odds.

My Parents, My Inspiration by Amanda

My Parents, My Inspiration by Amanda - October 2019 Scholarship Essay

Throughout my entire life thus far, I have constantly been worried about failure. I try my hardest to push myself to succeed academically and mentally. Everyone says you are your worst critic. I am extremely hard on myself and suffer through a lot of self-doubt. My parents, act as my life raft. When I spiral and sink down to the deepest, darkest parts of self-doubt, my parents are there to keep me afloat. When I first began going to school, I was terrified of leaving my family. I am almost 100% sure I cried when my parents dropped me off for my first day. I remember being more excited as my younger years of education progressed. I would work hard and try my best to get good grades. I tried my best to be on my highest behavior and to never act out. This continued through my elementary years. I studied hard for tests and always brought home excellent grades. I had been in the GATE program, gifted and talented education, from first grade up until my eight grade year. School had always been easy for me, but this was just the beginning. After fifth grade, I began seeing which specific subjects I struggled in. The two I had the most struggles in were math and science. I took advanced math classes, much higher than my other friends, and began struggling with the concepts. I would sit at the table and cry because of how dumb I felt. My parents were always there to comfort me to the best of their abilities. They would sit down with me and talk me through the problems I could not finish. Once I got into higher math, my parents could no longer help me well enough. They would wait an hour after school for me to get homework help when I needed. They also ended up getting me a personal tutor to help me with my math struggles. My parents did anything they could in order to make sure I felt confident in my education. Once I moved on to high school, I became more confident in myself. I still have my days where I am way too hard on myself and I struggle with my own thoughts. My parents always tell me they are so proud of how far I have made it already and that they are not worried about my grades. They are the reason I have made it this far. All in all, I am extremely lucky to have the parents I do. They mean so much to me, and I would not be this successful without their help.
