“The Great American Novel”

• Term coined in an essay by John William De Forest in 1868 (Klein) • Capturing the essence of America • Perennial nerdy debate • The most read novel in American high schools. (“High School Reading Books”) • American society and values • Transitional work into Modernism

F. Scott Fitzgerald

• Best known for his novels depicting the flamboyance and excess of the Jazz Age • Born (1896) into a middle class family in Minnesota but grows up mostly in New York State • After a failed romance with a Chicago socialite, Fitzgerald drops out of Princeton and joins the US Army (WWI). • Proposes to Zelda Sayre. She rejects his proposal but later agrees after the success of This Side of Paradise (1920). • Spends time in Europe with modernist writers and artists of the “ Lost Generation .”

• 1925: The Great Gatsby receives positive reviews from critics but fails commercially. • Zelda suffers a nervous breakdown and is committed to a mental health institution. • Fitzgerald struggles professionally and financially; moves to Hollywood hoping to find success as a screenwriter. • Overcomes alcoholism only to die of a heart attack (1940). • The Great Gatsby and his other works gain increased attention during and following WWII.

It is often helpful to think of literary works as part of a larger movement.

Romanticism (circa 1790) characterized by a rejection of the rational and an emphasis on individual experience, expression, emotion, and imagination. Often includes the supernatural.

Realism (circa 1865) a reaction to the fanciful escapes of Romanticism. Realists sought to develop a style that valued the faithful portrayal of everyday experiences and common people.

Modernism (circa 1900) A reaction to WWI and increased industrialization. Attempts to capture the alienation, cultural disruption, and loneliness of living in a society of rapid and even traumatic change.

WWI and Consequences

• 1914 1918 • 30 nations declare war • Industrial and chemical “advances” • 16 million deaths • Nightmare inducing images and films (carpet bombings, trench warfare, chemical weapons victims, etc.) • A “lost generation” of the traumatized and disillusioned 

“The Roaring Twenties”

• Also known as… Les Années Folles “crazy years” and “The Jazz Age” • Dynamic social, cultural, and artistic change in Western society • A break with tradition and an emphasis of the modern

Industry and Technology

• Technological advances from WWI production continue into the 1920s. • New products and increased production (often via assembly lines) • Cinema • Telephones • Radio (and sports broadcasts) • Affordable cars • Appliances • Medicine

Urbanization

• 1920: For the first time, most Americans live in a city. • City dwellers see comparatively greater improvements in wealth and standard of living.  • Culture war: rural traditionalists vs. urban modernists

• Nationwide ban on alcoholic beverages from 1920 to 1933 • Protestants, Progressives, and women exert political pressure leading to the 18th Amendment. • Accidentally gives rise to robust organized crime networks • Bootleggers, mobsters, gin mills, speakeasies, hooch parlors, gangsters, Tommy guns, etc. • Ended by the 21st Amendment

Point of View

Nick Carraway looks back to when he moved to New York to start his career.

He tells the story of The Great Gatsby in the past tense and describes the events as he sees them.

Pay attention to what he emphasizes and what he glosses over.

Note his tone (attitude) toward different subjects.

Characterization

We will analyze how Fitzgerald creates some of literature’s most iconic characters and uses them to develop his themes.

Helpful terms: • Character traits: Elements of personality such as intelligence, dishonesty, or charm. • Motivation: The reasons behind a character’s thoughts and actions. • Foil characters: Characters that the author positions to encourage comparison. This often emphasizes the differences.

• Fitzgerald imbues specific objects, locations, and events with added layers of meaning. • Not every item in the novel is symbolic. However, none of the descriptions or inclusions are accidental. • Insider tip! Pay special attention when the novel describes a falling clock .

Descriptions that allow the reader to imagine with the senses.

“The only completely stationary object in the room was an enormous couch on which two young women were buoyed up as though upon an anchored balloon. They were both in white and their dresses were rippling and fluttering as if they had just been blown back in after a short flight around the house. I must have stood for a few moments listening to the whip and snap of the curtains and the groan of a picture on the wall.” (Fitzgerald 11)

Sentence Style

Fitzgerald’s sentences are often flowing, poetic, complex, nuanced, and unpredictable.

“The groups change more swiftly, swell with new arrivals, dissolve and form in the same breath already there are wanderers, confident girls who weave here and there among the stouter and more stable, become for a sharp, joyous moment the center of a group and then excited with triumph glide on through the sea change of faces and voices and color under the constantly changing light.” (44 5)

He may start with one idea and take unexpected turns within a single sentence. The disjointed ideas and ambiguous meanings are part of modernism. Just go with it.

“Yet high over the city our line of yellow windows must have contributed their share of human secrecy to the casual watcher in the darkening streets, and I was him too, looking up and wondering.” (39)

Foreshadowing

Foreshadowing (providing clues about what may happen) is a structural device that adds tension and anticipation. Pay attention to any hints that Fitzgerald provides.

“No Gatsby turned out all right at the end; it is what preyed on Gatsby, what foul dust floated in the wake of his dreams that temporarily closed out my interest in the abortive sorrows and short winded elations of men.” (2)

The Great Gatsby

  • The narrator of The Great Gatsby is Nick Carraway whom he is also casted as the book’s author.
  • The chapter begins with Nick commenting on himself, saying that he had learned to reserve judgement about other people from his father because if he holds them to his own moral standards, he would misunderstand them.
  • In the summer of 1922, Nick had just arrived in New York to join in the bond business and he had also rented a house on West Egg.
  • He also introduces West Egg as home to the “new rich” and the East Egg as home to the “old rich”.

Characters in Chapter 1

Nick Carraway

  • He is the narrator of the book. Nick is a young man from Minnesota who, after being educated at Yale and fighting in World War I, goes to New York City to learn the bond business.
  • Honest, tolerant, and inclined to reserve judgment, Nick often serves as a confidant for those with troubling secrets.
  • After moving to West Egg, a fictional area of Long Island that is home to the newly rich, Nick quickly befriends his next-door neighbor, the mysterious Jay Gatsby. The Great Gatsby is told entirely through Nick’s eyes; his thoughts and perceptions shape and color the story.
  • The title character and protagonist of the novel, Gatsby is a fabulously wealthy young man living in a Gothic mansion in West Egg.
  • He is famous for the lavish parties he throws every Saturday night, but no one knows where he comes from, what he does, or how he made his fortune.
  • As the novel progresses, Nick learns that Gatsby was born James Gatz on a farm in North Dakota; working for a millionaire made him dedicate his life to the achievement of wealth. When he met Daisy while training to be an officer in Louisville, he fell in love with her.
  • Nick also learns that Gatsby made his fortune through criminal activity, as he was willing to do anything to gain the social position he thought necessary to win Daisy.

Tom Buchanan

  • Daisy’s immensely wealthy husband, once a member of Nick’s social club at Yale.
  • Powerfully built and hailing from a socially solid old family, Tom is an arrogant, hypocritical bully. His social attitudes are laced with racism and sexism, and he never even considers trying to live up to the moral standard he demands from those around him.
  • He also has no moral second thoughts about his own extramarital affair with Myrtle, but when he begins to suspect Daisy and Gatsby of having an affair, he becomes outraged and forces a confrontation.

Jordan Baker

  • Daisy’s friend, a woman with whom Nick becomes romantically involved during the course of the novel.
  • A competitive golfer, Jordan represents one of the “new women” of the 1920s—cynical, boyish, and self-centered.
  • Jordan is beautiful, but also dishonest: she cheated in order to win her first golf tournament and continually bends the truth.
  • Daisy stands in stark contrast to her husband, Tom. She is a very frail and diminutive person that labors at being shallow and laughs at every opportunity.
  • Though she breezily remarks that everything is in decline, she does so only in order to seem to agree with her husband.
  • As a young woman in Louisville before the war, Daisy was courted by a number of officers, including Gatsby. She fell in love with Gatsby and promised to wait for him.
  • However, Daisy harbors a deep need to be loved, and when a wealthy, powerful young man named Tom Buchanan asked her to marry him, Daisy decided not to wait for Gatsby after all. Now a beautiful socialite, Daisy lives with Tom across from Gatsby in the fashionable East Egg district of Long Island.
  • Violence is a key theme in The Great Gatsby and is mostly embodied by the character of Tom. As an ex-football player, he uses his immense physical strength to intimidate those around him. Tom Buchanan vulgarly exploits his status: he is grotesque, completely lacking redeeming features. Daisy describes him as a “big, hulking physical specimen,” and it is seen that he mainly uses his size to intimidate and dominate others.
  • The societies of East and West Egg are deeply divided by the difference between the people who have “new money” and the people who have “old money”. Gatsby is “new money” which means he only recently began to earn his large sums of money. He tries desperately to fake status, even buying British shirts and claiming to have attended Oxford in an attempt to seem as if he is part of “old money”. Ultimately, it is class that separates Gatsby and Daisy, which cements Daisy’s relationship with her husband, Tom who is from the same class as she is.

3 Significant Quotes

  • “I hope she’ll be a fool - that’s the best thing a girl can be in this world, a beautiful little fool.”
  • Daisy spoke these words as she describes to Nick and Jordan her hopes for her daughter. This quote reveals a glimpse into Daisy’s character. Daisy is not a fool herself but is the product of a social environment that does not value intelligence in women. She describes her own boredom with life and seems to imply that a girl can have more fun if she is beautiful and simplistic. She herself thinks that being a “beautiful fool” is what men expects of women and this is her mindset on how to get past tough situations. This is also an excuse for her to live a luxurious life as she expects Tom to provide for her.
  • “It was the kind of voice that the ear follows up and down, as if each speech is an arrangement of notes that will never be played again.”
  • This shows that Daisy’s voice can be described as being full, not just of money, but of promises. There’s something about the description of the voice that tells the listener/reader that wonderful things are on the horizon. Daisy’s voice is irresistibly seductive and all the other characters are drawn to her because of it.
  • “A single green light, minute and far away, that might have been the end of a dock.”
  • The green light is a complex piece of symbolism in the book. The obvious reason is that the green light represents where Daisy is at and his longing for her. However, the green light means so much more, Daisy is just part of it. The green light represents all his wants in life which include: wealth, success, acceptance and Daisy. And no matter how much the wealth or materialistic possessions he has, he still never feels complete. Even with a large house full of people partying and seeking his attention, he still longs for Daisy. So to possess the green light, that is the ultimate combination he longs for.

Thoughts About The Chapter

  • The first chapter of The Great Gatsby gives an introduction to the narrator which is Nick and his personality in his point of view.
  • It also introduces the East and West Egg.
  • It makes the reader want to know more about Gatsby because of Fitzgerald’s mysterious portrayal of him towards the end of the chapter.

Are you looking for activities for The Great Gatsby ? Are you wanting to add to an established curriculum or are you starting from scratch? Either way, we’ve got you.

The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald is one of those American classics that features in curriculums the world over.

This post will help you out if you’re teaching The Great Gatsby by showing you pre-reading, while-reading, after-reading, and whole-unit bundles of activities for the novel.

We\’ll look at fun activities for The Great Gatsby , as well as other The Great Gatsby teaching resources.

Pre-reading activities for The Great Gatsby

1. the roaring 20s learning stations.

A great way to help your students understand the historical context for Gatsby is by using these six learning stations by Write On with Miss G.

You can either use all of the stations, or if time is short, you pick and choose which stations are best suited to your class. You can assign parts digitally for homework.

Each station contains a link to an informational text and a few questions. Topics covered include:

  • disillusionment and the Lost Generation
  • economy and consumerism
  • prohibition and organized crime
  • the changing role of women
  • the jazz age

2. The Great Gatsby gallery walk pre-reading stations

If your students are more visual, you might like this gallery walk by Mondays Made Easy.

You can use it both in-class or through distance learning with Google Classroom.

In the activity, students will look at primary sources including music, film, archived newspaper articles, photos, and book covers.

Using worksheets, students will then draw inferences about the context of Gatsby (the Roaring 1920s) and make predictions about the plot.

3. The Great Gatsby bias discussion

Another great pre-reading activity for The Great Gatsby is this bias discussion by Created for Learning.

In the bias discussion, students are given nine controversial statements that they then need to agree or disagree with. Students who agree move to one side of the room, while those who disagree move to the other.

Students then need to defend their opinions, while you challenge students’ opinions through questioning.

The discussion activity includes a printable handout and a PowerPoint presentation to accompany the discussion.

4. Pre-reading webquest for The Gre at Gatsby

If your students prefer to work by themselves, they may prefer this pre-reading webquest by Robert Cant.

Students learn about the author, historical context, key literary terms, genre, and more.

There is also an optional written task, meta-cognition activity, and a marking rubric if you wish to use it. The document is in word format and is fully editable so you can adapt it to your needs.

5. Agree or disagree activity

Similar to the bias discussion earlier, this agree or disagree activity by The Lit Guy asks students to choose the ‘agree’ or ‘disagree’ side about various issues raised in The Great Gatsby .

Students must then defend their opinions. Students often engage in great discussion using this format.

The activity includes tips on how to use the resource in your classroom.

6. Roaring 20s research project

If your students love to work individually, then this 1920s research project by Books and Bloom Teaching may be what you need. In the activity, students select a topic that is most interesting to them.

Choices of topics include:

  • economic booms and stock market crashes
  • the Great Depression
  • flappers and women\’s rights
  • the impact of World War One
  • the film industry and celebrity worship
  • immigration

Once students have chosen a topic, they create a thesis statement, three main points, and follow the guideline to find pictures with captions, an aligning literary text, an important historical character, and more.

If you are using this as a pre-reading activity, students could use excerpts from the novel (that you select) and information about F. Scott Fitzgerald etc.

Students then create a poster or documentary. The product has an editable version so that you can tweak it to your circumstances.

7. The Great Gatsby pre-reading activities

Another option is one of the two pre-reading activities in this bundle by Selena Smith. Included in the bundle are a PechaKucha presentations activity (20 images for 20 seconds presentation) or a gallery walk.

Detailed instructions for both options are included, as are an evaluation checklist for students and a grading rubric for teachers (for the presentations activity).

Students complete the activity on one of twelve topics from the Roaring 20s. You could either ask students to choose a topic, or you could assign them.

8. The Great Gatsby pre-reading exploration board

Another option for a research pre-reading activity for The Great Gatsby is this exploration board by Julie Conlan.

Students use the ‘board’ of topics to choose activities that explore contextual information about The Great Gatsby . And to ensure they cover enough information, students must cover the whole board (all the topics) in one way or another.

  • retellings – an after-reading activity where students practice summarizing and demonstrating their comprehension of the text.  Students do it after reading a chapter and can do them either in writing or orally.  A rubric is included.

10. The Great Gatsby themes activity

Also included in the bundle by English Bulldog shown earlier, is this textual analysis activity is a way of getting students to identify and analyze themes in the novel.  

Students read a group of quotations from The Great Gatsby and then decide on a theme that relates to all of the quotations.  Students then create a wall poster that includes the most powerful quotation to represent their theme.  They also analyze the author’s use of language in the quote. 

Afterward, students do a carousel discussion where they review other groups’ posters and ideas.  The Great Gatsby lesson plan includes common core objectives, preparation steps, a classroom agenda, and assessment strategies.

11. The Great Gatsby color symbolism PowerPoint and activities

Students examine Fitzgerald’s use of the ‘scenic method’ by awarding Gatsby and Tom points (both positive and negative) to see ‘who is winning’ at key points in Chapter 7.

The activity gets students to practice close reading and analysis skills while tracking who is winning the competition.

13. Chapter 1 character report card

Another fun idea for character analysis in The Great Gatsby is this character report card activity, also by Write on with Miss G.

In the activity, students have to ‘grade’ the characters on certain traits.  Students have to justify the grades with evidence from the text.

After grading, students then have to explain the most and least likable characters.  This helps students understand that as a reader you’re not necessarily supposed to like the characters in the novel.

The activities are designed for students to creatively show their understanding of The Great Gatsby ’s characterization, plot, and symbolism.  

The first activity is a found poem, where students copy and paste a page from the novel, underline illustrative words and phrases, create a topic or theme, and compose a poem using Fitzgerald’s words.  A sample poem is included, along with a brief explanation of the poem and a grading rubric. 

The second activity is a creative writing activity that ‘adds on’ to chapter five.  Because Nick Carraway is an unreliable narrator, students write as the narrator and compose the scene of what they think happened between Jay and Daisy in their reunion in chapter five.  

Students must consider dialogue, sensory description, figurative language (alliteration, simile, personification), symbolism, and plot.  A scoring rubric is provided.   

The third activity is a character’s cell phone activity.  Students imagine the characters as they might exist in our society.  They imagine a homepage that displays the character’s apps and then complete an illustration/discussion component for each.

Students must fill in a blank cell phone homepage and choose options to display from entertainment apps, social connections, online shopping, legitimate news, and self-indulgence such as selfies, avatars, ringtones, or games.

Students then discuss why the character would have accessed or posted various items.

The final creative assessment task is a Gatsby one-pager.  From a template, students will create a one-page assignment of illustrations, quotes, and explanations to show their understanding of the theme, characterization, and symbolism in The Great Gatsby .

Students must use quotes and citations in the one-pager, and a sample is included in the bundle.  There is also a scoring rubric included.

The Great Gatsby • Chapter 1 • By: Rebecca, Shayne & Kesley

Summary • The narrator of The Great Gatsby is Nick Carraway whom he is also casted as the book’s author. • The chapter begins with Nick commenting on himself, saying that he had learned to reserve judgement about other people from his father because if he holds them to his own moral standards, he would misunderstand them. • In the summer of 1922, Nick had just arrived in New York to join in the bond business and he had also rented a house on West Egg. • He also introduces West Egg as home to the “new rich” and the East Egg as home to the “old rich”. • Nick graduated from Yale and has many connections on East Egg.

Summary • One night, he drives out to East Egg to have dinner with his cousin, Daisy Buchanan, and her husband, Tom Buchanan. • Upon arriving, Tom greets Nick on the porch. Inside, Daisy lies on a couch with her friend, Jordan who is a competitive golf player. • Tom tries to interest the others in a book called The Rise Of The Colored Empires which expresses racism. • Tom was interrupted with an incoming phone call from his lover from New York. Daisy hurriedly follows him. • After an awkward dinner, Jordan goes to sleep and Tom and Daisy hint that they would like for Nick to take a romantic interest in Jordan. • When Nick arrives at his home in West Egg, he sees Gatsby, whom he did not know who he was yet, stretching his arms towards the green light at the end of a dock.

Characters in Chapter 1 • Nick • Gatsby • Tom • Jordan • Daisy

Nick Carraway • He is the narrator of the book. Nick is a young man from Minnesota who, after being educated at Yale and fighting in World War I, goes to New York City to learn the bond business. • Honest, tolerant, and inclined to reserve judgment, Nick often serves as a confidant for those with troubling secrets. • After moving to West Egg, a fictional area of Long Island that is home to the newly rich, Nick quickly befriends his next-door neighbor, the mysterious Jay Gatsby. The Great Gatsby is told entirely through Nick’s eyes; his thoughts and perceptions shape and color the story.

Jay Gatsby • The title character and protagonist of the novel, Gatsby is a fabulously wealthy young man living in a Gothic mansion in West Egg. • He is famous for the lavish parties he throws every Saturday night, but no one knows where he comes from, what he does, or how he made his fortune. • As the novel progresses, Nick learns that Gatsby was born James Gatz on a farm in North Dakota; working for a millionaire made him dedicate his life to the achievement of wealth. When he met Daisy while training to be an officer in Louisville, he fell in love with her. • Nick also learns that Gatsby made his fortune through criminal activity, as he was willing to do anything to gain the social position he thought necessary to win Daisy.

Tom Buchanan • Daisy’s immensely wealthy husband, once a member of Nick’s social club at Yale. • Powerfully built and hailing from a socially solid old family, Tom is an arrogant, hypocritical bully. His social attitudes are laced with racism and sexism, and he never even considers trying to live up to the moral standard he demands from those around him. • He also has no moral second thoughts about his own extramarital affair with Myrtle, but when he begins to suspect Daisy and Gatsby of having an affair, he becomes outraged and forces a confrontation.

Jordan Baker • Daisy’s friend, a woman with whom Nick becomes romantically involved during the course of the novel. • A competitive golfer, Jordan represents one of the “new women” of the 1920s—cynical, boyish, and self-centered. • Jordan is beautiful, but also dishonest: she cheated in order to win her first golf tournament and continually bends the truth.

Daisy Faye • Daisy stands in stark contrast to her husband, Tom. She is a very frail and diminutive person that labors at being shallow and laughs at every opportunity. • Though she breezily remarks that everything is in decline, she does so only in order to seem to agree with her husband. • As a young woman in Louisville before the war, Daisy was courted by a number of officers, including Gatsby. She fell in love with Gatsby and promised to wait for him. • However, Daisy harbors a deep need to be loved, and when a wealthy, powerful young man named Tom Buchanan asked her to marry him, Daisy decided not to wait for Gatsby after all. Now a beautiful socialite, Daisy lives with Tom across from Gatsby in the fashionable East Egg district of Long Island.

Themes • Violence • Violence is a key theme in The Great Gatsby and is mostly embodied by the character of Tom. As an ex-football player, he uses his immense physical strength to intimidate those around him. Tom Buchanan vulgarly exploits his status: he is grotesque, completely lacking redeeming features. Daisy describes him as a “big, hulking physical specimen,” and it is seen that he mainly uses his size to intimidate and dominate others.

Themes • Class • The societies of East and West Egg are deeply divided by the difference between the people who have “new money” and the people who have “old money”. Gatsby is “new money” which means he only recently began to earn his large sums of money. He tries desperately to fake status, even buying British shirts and claiming to have attended Oxford in an attempt to seem as if he is part of “old money”. Ultimately, it is class that separates Gatsby and Daisy, which cements Daisy’s relationship with her husband, Tom who is from the same class as she is.

3 Significant Quotes • “I hope she’ll be a fool - that’s the best thing a girl can be in this world, a beautiful little fool.” • Daisy spoke these words as she describes to Nick and Jordan her hopes for her daughter. This quote reveals a glimpse into Daisy’s character. Daisy is not a fool herself but is the product of a social environment that does not value intelligence in women. She describes her own boredom with life and seems to imply that a girl can have more fun if she is beautiful and simplistic. She herself thinks that being a “beautiful fool” is what men expects of women and this is her mindset on how to get past tough situations. This is also an excuse for her to live a luxurious life as she expects Tom to provide for her.

3 Significant Quotes • “It was the kind of voice that the ear follows up and down, as if each speech is an arrangement of notes that will never be played again.” • This shows that Daisy’s voice can be described as being full, not just of money, but of promises. There’s something about the description of the voice that tells the listener/reader that wonderful things are on the horizon. Daisy’s voice is irresistibly seductive and all the other characters are drawn to her because of it.

3 Significant Quotes • “A single green light, minute and far away, that might have been the end of a dock.” • The green light is a complex piece of symbolism in the book. The obvious reason is that the green light represents where Daisy is at and his longing for her. However, the green light means so much more, Daisy is just part of it. The green light represents all his wants in life which include: wealth, success, acceptance and Daisy. And no matter how much the wealth or materialistic possessions he has, he still never feels complete. Even with a large house full of people partying and seeking his attention, he still longs for Daisy. So to possess the green light, that is the ultimate combination he longs for.

Thoughts About The Chapter • The first chapter of The Great Gatsby gives an introduction to the narrator which is Nick and his personality in his point of view. • It also introduces the East and West Egg. • It makes the reader want to know more about Gatsby because of Fitzgerald’s mysterious portrayal of him towards the end of the chapter.
