Configure the WAN port on the Meraki MX with a static IP

Quick guide on how to set up the wan port on a meraki mx..

Introduction

By default, all Cisco Meraki MX appliances have their WAN interfaces configured to automatically receive an IP address via DHCP from your upstream provider/ISP. Depending on your network setup or your ISP’s requirements though, a dynamic IP assignment might not be available and you need to have those IP addresses configured statically.

If you find yourself in that situation, follow the steps below to configure your Meraki MX’s WAN port with a static IP.

Configure WAN port with a static IP

Step 1:  Connect your computer/machine to the management port on your MX

Step 2:  Open a web browser and visit: http://setup.meraki.com (no internet access needed to reach it) - also known as the “local status page”

Step 3: Choose “Configure” from the top ribbon

Step 4: Under “Uplink configuration” change the “IP assignment” to “Static” for the port you’re looking to change:

fixed ip assignment meraki

Step 5: Set the Address, Netmask, Gateway and DNS servers values - changes are automatically saved.

You’re all set with a static IP on your Meraki MX!

Contact Pilot Support for more assistance, or check out the Support Center to see how to configure static IPs for other router types.

Assigning a static IP to a Meraki vpn concentrator (VMX) in Azure - is it possible?

Can a SME from MS-Azure either confirm or deny that I can/can't assign a static public IP and static private IP to a VM-Cisco Meraki or do I have to take the DHCP assignment handed out by MS?

They aren't sure on the Cisco forum and I need a definitive answer.

Thanks in advance Sharyn

Azure Virtual Network An Azure networking service that is used to provision private networks and optionally to connect to on-premises datacenters. 2,378 questions Sign in to follow Follow

Hi @Sharyn Schmidt

I just wanted to make my last comment on this case scenario. Please review the observation shown below:

  • For instance, I was taking the time and review this in deep so, The first thing that brought my attention was that this NVA(Network Virtual Appliance) is Cisco Vendor as well as this is a managed application VM(Which is managed by CISCO).

Review Managed application definition from Azure library/Documentation. An Azure managed application plan is one way to publish an Azure application offer in Azure Marketplace. If you haven't already done so, read Plan an Azure Application offer for the commercial marketplace. Managed applications are transact offers that are deployed and billed through Azure Marketplace. The listing option that a user sees is Get It Now. Use an Azure Application: Managed application plan when the following conditions are required: You will deploy a subscription-based solution for your customer using either a virtual machine (VM) or an entire infrastructure as a service (IaaS)-based solution. You or your customer requires the solution to be managed by a partner. For example, a partner can be a systems integrator or a managed service provider (MSP).

-Furthermore, I did mention to you that I have my own FW vendor image but this one is not Managed application which let me to add/modify/change my NIC settings.

See images below.

215195-image.png

That PIP(Public IP) is for Remote Access as well as other interfaces(NIC's) assigned for untrust/trust zones like most FW's.

-I have been saying that when you deploy a resource and it requires to use PIP's, you can use a PIP already provisioned before or at the moment of resource creation to choose the option create new one

-Another way to retain PIP's is to use the feature IP prefix which you can select different ranges for you like:

215196-image.png

-Having said that, I am not sure if your task is to perform a software/Firmware upgrade or Recreate this existing vMX in a newer version. If you were going to recreate this NVA, I wonder if you have considered this option from the vMX appliance itself:

Continuation

215089-image.png

That might be a chance to retain same IP settings for old vMX... Please correct me if I mistaken on this one ; )

I hope that was helpful for you to get going this task.

Looking forward to your feedback,

Best Regards,

Hi. Thanks for your answers.

We are being forced to stand up a whole new image.

My concern with the IP is that even if Meraki thinks its IP is x.x.x.x., will Azure know I kept the same IP?

If I clone the IP on the meraki, and Azure assigns me a new one, I need to put what Azure assigns me. Right?

2 additional answers

Hello @Sharyn Schmidt

Thank you for your feedback.

I am wondering if you have tried to do it like this:

215036-image.png

For instance, I have a PA FW and I do not have those issue... Try to get it done like the image shown above.

Hi. I didn't bother to explain the rest of it because it's too long to type. We already have many vnets, subnets, etc set up in Azure using the currrent Meraki VMX-100 as a vpn concentrator, attaching our corp site tunnel to azure.

Meraki is forcing us to upgrade to their new version of what we have. We have routing tables all over the azure network pointing to the virtual Meraki as several azure to site tunnels, some using the public IP of the meraki in place now.

My hope was to assign statically assign the current IP addresses to the current Meraki. Then shut down the old Meraki, dissasociate those and assign them to the new meraki. None of the routing tables would change and the endpoint IP for our tunnels from other sites that connect to azure wouldn't have to change.

I know how to assign a static ip to a Windows VM but the virtual meraki, although a vm image, does not work the same as a regular vm windows does and there are settings and subsystems that Azure controls and the Admin user can't.

Thank you for your networking suggestions and routes, but this is all set up already and running perfectly. The easiest way to change out the Meraki would be to give it the same IPs, both public and private that the current one has.

I just need a definitive answer as to whether I can dissassociate the current Meraki IPs from the current Meraki for use by the new one.

I think that makes sense.

Many thanks for your all the details provided.

I fully understand your concern which is the easiest way to get it done with no further impact or planning.

I believe your are referring to this version below:

214996-image.png

Just wanted to add more info for your to be able to determine what the best approach is.. As a friendly reminder, in the future you can set up a PIP(Public IP address) before you create any resource and when creating the needed resource so, you can state the PIP previously created.

https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/virtual-network/ip-services/public-ip-addresses

Also, see this as well.

214997-image.png

Thank you for highlighting this....this is what I wanted to know.....

Once the public IP address is released, can I get it back for my new Meraki? Is it released as in, bye,, cya...or is it disassociated and can be reused?

If the private IP is released when the public one is, I should, at least be able to re-use the private ip.

https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/virtual-network/ip-services/public-ip-address-prefix

This is what you could need : )

This is similar to Reserved Public IP feature.

Hoping this was useful for you.

Finally, please recall that there 2 ways to get the Public IP address that you manually set it up or you just create a new one when creating the vMX device.

But the other info given, it is great for your if you do not want to be worried about it.

Here is the answer for this concern below:

215485-image.png

Thank you. This is exactly what I was looking for.

I figured as much.

Your Welcome : )

It was a pleasure to help you to address this concern.

Have a good one.

Yes, fixed IP assignments are 1 MAC address to 1 IP, whereas reserved IP ranges are the range of IP addresses that you don't want DHCP to issue. This would cover IP addresses that are statically assigned to a client in that subnet. The two are totally separate and you can have either without the other. 0 Kudos.
