Matches are an essential part of sports. They give rise to competitive spirit and sportsmanship. Moreover, matches are a kind of get-together where players, apart from playing and displaying their physical stamina, exchange ideas and information and have free and frank discussions among themselves.

Recently, I got the opportunity to witness a football match that was played between Khalsa Higher Secondary School, Qadian and DAV Senior Secondary School, Delhi. The match was played at the playgrounds of SN College. The entire ground was swept clean and the sides decorated. There were chairs on one side and rest of the ground was open for the spectators. Both the teams were in high spirits. They were dressed in their school colours. Both seemed to be equally strong. The spectators were expecting a well-contested and lively game. The ground and its surroundings were jampacked. The match started at 5 p.m. sharp.

The DAV team won the toss and chose the favourable side. Soon the referee blew the whistle and the match started. They were hopeful of scoring the goal. During the first few minutes, the DAV team dominated. They penetrated into the defences of their rival team but could not score any goal. Anyhow, their splendid performance puzzled the Khalsa Higher Secondary School team and the latter resorted to a rough game. They began kicking the ball at random. But the captain did not lose heart and encouraged his team. So the team was reinvigorated. The Khalsa team soon recovered their lost position and in the heat of the moment they scored a goal. There was thunderous applause when the goal was scored. The whole team was cheered by their supporters. But at the same time, the right half of DAV team was badly injured and the captain had to play the double role throughout the entire game. Soon the referee blew a long whistle and the first half was declared to be over.

Then, the players took some rest and refreshments. There was a loud noise in the playground as the supporters of both the teams rushed to their respective sides in order to cheer them and encourage them.

Again, the referee whistled and the match started. Now, the DAV team tightened their belts and played with determination. The goalkeeper of DAV team also became very alert. In the first few moments, the Khalsa team put pressure on the DAV team; their left half made three hits one after another at the goal of DAV but the goalkeeper of DAV team showed his extraordinary skill by kicking the ball back. At the end moment the DAV side took the ball to their rival side and within no time, their left half gave a pass to right half and the right half kicked the ball straight into the goal and the goal was scored. Now it became a drawn game which delighted the DAV team also and this served to boost their morale. There were loud cheers from their supporters.

Now, the game was passing through a crucial stage. Each side was trying its best to score a goal but soon the time was over and the exciting finale was synchronised with the scoring of a goal by Khalsa team over DAV team. This was a surprising feat that created a great sensation. The winning team received deafening cheers from its supporters while the other spectators admired the courage and sporting spirit shown by both the teams. It was really an exciting match and the spectators appeared to have enjoyed it very much.

We all must’ve had played a game of football during our school days, fighting with each other over every penalty.

Not just our childhood and school days , we still might just go out for a game, in our formal clothes during lunch breaks if we get the chance.

We never get enough, because it is that type of game. But do we know the basics of the game? Do we know each and every player’s role, the fouls, the do’s and don’ts?

The oldest recorded form of football was a sport in ancient China , called Cuju. Cuju literally means kick ball . It was played during major celebrations of the empire.

It was played between two teams, each trying to put the ball between the others hoop. There were many forms of games played in Europe that resembled football, but involved more violence and use of hands.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — Coming into the 2024 season, the New York Giants had major questions about quarterback Daniel Jones and his surgically-repaired knee, their rebuilt offensive line and whether first-round draft pick Malik Nabers would live up the hype as a big-play receiver.

In rolling out their first-team offensive and defensive units in the second week of the preseason, coach Brian Daboll had to be happy with two of the answers in a 28-10 loss to the Texans on Saturday.

The line was outstanding as was Nabers, who had a highlight-reel, leaping 21-yard catch along the sideline late in the first half.

Jones played in a game for the first time since tearing the ACL in his right knee in early November against the Raiders in Las Vegas. He threw two interceptions, including a Pick-6, and finished 11 of 18 for 138 yards.

The six-year veteran will need to play better for the Giants to bounce back from a disappointing 6-11 season. That’s especially true because New York has little behind him with veteran Drew Lock and second-year pro Tommy DeVito.

The new offensive line, put together after last year’s unit allowed a franchise record 85 sacks, was solid. The first unit of Andrew Thomas, Aaron Stinnie, John-Michael Schmitz, Greg Van Roten and Jermaine Eluemunor didn’t allow a sack and mostly kept a clean pocket for Jones.

However, it allowed pressure on a second-and-8 play from the New York 8. After almost being sacked, Jones threw a floater that Texans safety Jalen Pitre intercepted and returned 5 yards for a touchdown.

Jones, who had a career year in 2022 in leading New York to the playoffs for the first time since 2016, said he either should have bounced the ball near the receiver or thrown it out of bounds.

“I mean things like that are going to happen. We’ll work on it,” Daboll said Sunday in reviewing the game. “We’ll learn from it, will grow from it. We’ll be better the next time.”

Jones was also intercepted by Houston cornerback Derek Stingley Jr. on a deep sideline pass to Jalin Hyatt. He didn’t make the same mistake in the second quarter, hitting Darius Slayton for 44-yards to set up a Devin Singletary short TD run.

“They continue to improve,” Daboll said of the line. “I’d say we’ve added good pieces in terms of the veterans. Communication, it was good to get John Michael back out there so he could work with some of the guys. Veterans that care, that are smart, that are tough, that have played the game, that are all on the same page.”

The line also has depth. Jon Runyan Jr., who left the Packers to join the Giants, didn’t play because minor shoulder injury. Evan Neal, who started at right tackle the past two years after being the No. 7 overall pick in 2022, just returned from a long rehabilitation from ankle surgery. New York also has veterans Josh Ezeudu and Austin Schlottmann as backups.

Nabers has been the star of training camp after being selected No. 6 overall in the draft. He was targeted six times Saturday and had four catches for 54 yards.

“It’s a great feeling,” Jones said after the game about working with LSU product Nabers. “I think like that, giving him a chance and letting him go get it. Yeah, like I said, we’ve made plays all training camp and good to see it on the field.”

Daboll didn’t have an update Sunday on starting inside linebacker Micah McFadden, who was carted off with a hip injury in the first half.
