It contains clear definitions of terminology and explanations and makes good use of helpful boxes in each chapter to explain concepts or alert you to mistakes easily made in the process of analysing data using this method. 

First up, it’s a book that should be read by any qualitative researcher, not just those into thematic analysis. This is because it covers the foundations so well.  Secondly, it's an enjoyable read where, at times, you almost don’t realise you are taking things in because you are having fun. Finally, reading this book is (at the risk of extending their metaphor) like listening to two very experienced travellers when you are about to embark on your own. They don’t tell you where to go or precisely how to do it, but they fill you with confidence about your own ability to undertake what can seem like a daunting journey. 

We have about 60 students per year undertaking the Dissertation module and this text is high priority reading to help them plan out their research proposal in relation to data analysis. We also recommend the text to our researchers and higher research students. The text brings thematic analysis up to date and step by step explains the analytical process with extensive explanations and exemplars. An excellent and essential text, very well written with students and researchers in mind.

Introduction

Empirical research within critical psychology is strongly associated with the use of qualitative methods. In the field of qualitative psychology a distinction can be made between experiential and critical approaches (Braun & Clarke, 2013 ; Reicher, 2000 ), both of which involve some kind of critique of mainstream psychology. Experiential approaches aim to capture participants’ experiences and perspectives and ground research in participants’ accounts, rather than researcher’s categories. However, these approaches view language as a reflection of “internal categories of understanding” (Reicher, p. 3), and so assume it is possible to “read off” participants’ thoughts, feelings, and practices from their use of language. By contrast, critical approaches challenge what experiential approaches have in common with mainstream psychology – the assumption that language is only of interest as a description of inner states. We focus in particular on a number of papers that have sought to determine ‘how many’ interviews or focus groups are necessary to achieve saturation – variously conceptualised as data, code, theme and meaning saturation – in TA research. We highlight numerous problems with these how many ‘experiments’ and argue that because they use coding reliability and codebook types of TA, they make assumptions about TA and qualitative research which means their claims about saturation do not translate to reflexive TA.
