Nowadays, distance-learning programs have gained in popularity, but some people argue that online courses can never be taken as good as those taken at a college or university in person.

To what extent do you agree or disagree?

The rise in popularity of online-learning software and applications has led many to argue they can be as effective as real-life lessons taken at university. In my opinion, though these lessons are more efficient in particular university situations, their overall efficacy is far lower than learning in person.

Proponents of online study point out how increased flexibility leads to greater efficiency. When students study in person, they must expend time traveling to and from class and waiting before and after the lesson. In the aggregate, this constitutes significant time lost. This time could be redirected into more studying or other tasks. For instance, a student studying online could finish assignments up until the minute class begins and quickly begin their homework after the lesson. However, the efficiency gained is largely hypothetical as most students are likely to become distracted during online lessons and waste much of the time saved online.

Moreover, in-person lessons are far more engaging than online ones. This was clearly evidenced during the recent Covid-19 pandemic when many schools, including universities, transitioned to online learning for a period of time. The results were that students were generally less engaged in lessons and their overall productivity and learning suffered. This counterintuitive loss of productivity can be explained not only by the potential distractions students are vulnerable to online but also by the lack of connection between learners and teachers. In a classroom setting, students personally interact with their professors and other students, guaranteeing a high level of engagement and memorability.

In conclusion, though there are reasons to argue for the potential time saved through online lessons, they are simply far less effective than real world classes. Online lessons should remain a niche element of a university education.

What about this version…

With progress made in the field of technology, taking courses on the world wide web has become more popular. However, it is argued that this novel method can not replace traditional learning in real life. This essay will support this statement because of the potential possibility of focus and discussion during college.   To begin with, in college students are likely to be more focused on the subject compared with taking it online. Behind a computer desk, it is much easier to be distracted and to browse the internet to buy a pair of new shoes or to check social media. A recent Dutch study found that students who took the same curriculum online had a lower degree than those who followed the subject in the university. A possible explanation was that these pupils did not pay enough attention during the online course.   Another factor that should be taken into consideration is the opportunity for discussion during a real-life college.  In such a setting many pupils are present which gives them the possibility to discuss the subject, and this opportunity is most of the time insufficiently achievable or even not possible during an online course. In my experience, not only listening and reading are required to understand a lesson, but also the discussions between students are mandatory for a better understanding of this. In effect, the possible lack of vividly talking about something could result in a poor understanding of it.   It is my conviction that new technological ways to learn something can not replace the traditional, real-life methods of learning, because of the potential lack of focus and discussion during an online session.

Some good vocabulary, Ivan – but there is some reptetition and mis-use of certain words.

Keep it up, Ivan!

I found technical mistake of yours. You can fix it if you want.

The rise in popularity of online-learning software and applications has led many to argue they can NOT be as effective as real-life lessons taken at university. In my opinion, though these lessons are more efficient in particular university situations, their overall efficacy is far lower than learning in person.

Thanks but it is correct the way it is, Aziz!

Advantages and Disadvantages of Online Learning: IELTS Writing Task 2 Topic

You must write at least 250 words for IELTS Writing Task 2. You will be given a topic and evaluated on your abilities to answer by expressing and defending your viewpoint, explaining the topic, summarising facts, describing challenges, identifying potential alternatives, and illustrating what you write with explanations, claims, and specific examples from your own expertise or experience.

Today we will read about a very popular topic “Advantages and disadvantages of online learning essay”.

So, let’s get started.

IELTS Writing Task 2 Topic: Advantages and Disadvantages of Online Classes

Let us help you in your IELTS writing preparation with an interesting and informative topic. Read all the 3 sample answers and learn how to approach a topic in different ways.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Online Classes Sample Answer One for IELTS Writing Task 2

Online teaching and learning have grown in popularity among students in recent times, and this is viewed differently by different learners. Many students see this as a helpful learning tool, although others believe it is not as successful as classroom instruction. This article would explore the benefits and drawbacks of digital education.

Advantages of Online Classes Essay

Students who study online have more flexibility in their schedules and spend less money on their education. They will study their desired courses and subjects at their own pace. This is a fantastic opportunity for learners to learn new skills and expand their experience while remaining in the comfort of their own home. For example, a Nepali student seeking an Australian degree in business administration does not need to travel to Australia; he can train and complete the course while remaining at home. As a result, distance learning is both cost-effective and time-efficient.

Disadvantages of Studying Online

That being said, online classes offer more emphasis on the analytical aspect of learning and there is less instructor and student contact. It ignores realistic learning elements and encourages passive learning. It is clear that students perceive it to be less successful than classroom instruction. According to a new survey, a larger percentage of students considered classroom instruction to be much more successful than digital education.

Conclusion: Merits and Demerits of Online Teaching

In conclusion, the ever-increasing availability of digital education has gained traction among young adults for many years and is viewed as helpful by many and less successful by others. The focus should be placed on its efficacy in order to identify it as the most cost-effective learning method other than classroom instruction.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Online Classes Sample Answer Two for IELTS Writing Task 2

Recently, the course has grown in popularity, resulting in more excellent learning options for students. While this movement may have some benefits, it may also have some risks and challenges as a result. Both sides of learning will be addressed in more detail in the following chapters. On the one hand, distance education has certain benefits. For starters, the simplicity of distance learning is essential.

Also Read: IELTS Essay in Writing Task 2: Here’s How to Organize it Well

There is no time constraint and the online classroom and teacher are (theoretically) accessible 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. As a result, students will stick to their schedules without impacting their learning outcomes.

Second, the advantage of learning is that it saves resources. Tuition at online schools is often smaller than at conventional universities. Building repairs, grounds maintenance, food service, class accessories, and other expenses that impact the cost of credits are not needed.

Learners, on the other hand, may suffer from a number of disadvantages of simulated learning. To continue, students can encounter technical issues, which can have a variety of implications.

Furthermore, some students are not equipped with the good internet access that online courses necessitate, and therefore fall behind their simulated classmates: poor monitors find it difficult to obey the course Management.

The system, as well as their learning process, becomes troublesome. Another downside to digital education is the scarcity of accreditation and the poor standard of instruction. The growing demand for digital education has resulted in an uncontrollable proliferation of colleges, including some unregulated schools, and there is no way to check the content of all courses. As a consequence, illegal organisations can con several students out of money.

Finally, online education can be helpful in terms of scheduling flexibility and reduced tuition. However, immersive learning has some drawbacks, including poor student conditions and a lack of quality control over classes.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Online Classes Sample Answer Three for IELTS Writing Task 2

These days, online learning is becoming increasingly popular. Many conventional colleges began to make their classes available for free. It represents a simple and convenient way to gain expertise in almost any area, from law and accounting to social sciences such as sociology, anthropology, and history. Digital education is a fantastic alternative to conventional universities, particularly for people who do not have the time or resources to attend traditional universities. So what are the benefits and drawbacks of online learning?

Also Read: Opinion Essay for IELTS: How to Plan and Write a Perfect Opinion Essay?

While many people still believe that traditional colleges are the only way to gain expertise and obtain a diploma, digital education has proven to be an excellent option. Students should study on their own time, and particularly for free. It is an excellent way to learn a variety of subjects while still increasing self-motivation. Online learning is so successful because students can complete their assignments easily, leaving more time for hobbies or job search.

Access to all of the opportunities of a typical course allows learners to practise wherever they are, giving them the opportunity to prepare wherever they choose. An individual may attend various courses with only an Internet connection. Students’ accountability and self-discipline are among the benefits of digital learning.

Limitations of Online Learning

An individual can only learn properly in a small group. Learners learn at school how to make new friends, be polite, deal with failure, and, most importantly, compete. Competition among colleagues can be very exciting, and students can learn greatly from it. Human contact is not possible for digital learning.

Another drawback is that online classes cannot handle the thousands of students who attempt to participate in debates. Furthermore, if digital education is intended for disciplines that need preparation, it can be challenging.

Conclusion of Studying Online

Finally, digital education can be seen as a supplement to and expansion to traditional ways of learning. Even the best online course cannot completely substitute physical interaction with an instructor or the human connections formed in a group. As a result, standard classes can not be replaced by digital learning.

Any essay can be satisfactory if addressed correctly. It is critical to remember in IELTS writing that each type of essay necessitates a different approach. In the case of an ‘advantage and disadvantage’ essay, a mixture of solid structure and appropriate data is a game-changer. As a result, in order to achieve a 9 band in your exam, you must devote some time to planning and structuring your essay.

IELTS Task 2 Writing – Online Education – Band 9

IELTS Task 2 Writing

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Online education is rapidly increasing in popularity. What has led to this development? What are the advantages and disadvantages of online learning compared to in-class instructions? Provide examples and explanations.

Learning via the internet is quickly becoming mainstream among pupils. What are the motivating factors behind this change? What are the positives and negatives of remote learning versus in-person study? Give examples and explanations.

Write at least 250 words.

*When you are practicing Task 2 at home, your planning, and developing ideas should take 20 – 30 minutes, and you should write it all down!

*During your official exam, your Task 2 planning MUST not take more than 5 minutes, you should only write down the paraphrase of the question and your thesis.

TOPIC = Online education

Controlling Idea(s) = reasons for its popularity and the advantages and disadvantages

*Third person essay

What is online education?

Remote learning through the use of computers and the internet whereby students and teachers are separated by space and/or time.

Why is online education popular? (What are the advantages of online learning?)

It is more accessible (no restrictions of distance or boarders), convenient (less time, no commute), diverse (for teachers and content), affordable.

How does it work?

Through the use of a computer and the internet; software, video, audio, camera, mic.

Why can online educations be disadvantageous compared to in-class learning?

Distractions (less focused), technical problems, lower quality of socialization with peers and teachers, lack of physical movement.

(***What has accelerated online learning nowadays? A: viral infection, pandemic)

THESIS (the points for discussion and persuasion in your essay)

Some negatives of remote learning are more distractions and less socialization while the main reasons for virtual learnings rise in popularity, and its benefits, are convenience, affordability, and diversity.

Introduction (hook, background, thesis)

Certainly, the revolution of online education is well under way worldwide. Modern technology, namely the computer and the internet, has enabled billions of people to learn from the comfort of their homes and this has had a massive impact on education systems.  Some negatives of remote learning are more distractions and less socialization while the main reasons for virtual pedagogy’s rise in popularity, and its benefits, are convenience, affordability, and diversity.

Body 1 – Topic Sentence – introduce, in detail, the concept/points of body paragraph 1 (more distraction and less socialization)

Two commonly observed deficits of learning from the comfort of the home are plenty of competing stimuli that draw attention from studies as well as a lack of interaction with peers. (Explanation – Why? What do you mean?) Friends, family, the television, or even the smell of a home-cooked meal can frequently distract home learners from their studies, and it is much easier to get up from the lesson and engage in these interruptions than doing this while sitting in a physical classroom. Furthermore, learners are not able to easily start a conversation and group work with their peers because they are often unavailable in time and/or space with virtual learning. (Example – 9/10 “Oh yeah, that’s happened with me. I can empathize” Think of 2 or 3 examples and pick the best one. Ideally, it is an example that may be applied to both body paragraphs.) When designing a business plan in an online class, it is easy to procrastinate and play football with friends instead of doing the work, also, delays happen because of poor communication among group members.  (Connecting/concluding sentence) However, these deficits of online learning can be managed and there are many benefits to such method of study.

Body 2 (Topic, Explanation and Example)

Many students favour and opt for online courses because it saves them time and money and they can choose their educational path from a broad range of courses and teachers that they can study from anytime and anywhere. (Explanation) Through distance learning, students do not need to spend hours each week commuting to school and they can pick from thousands of different courses taught by millions of teachers worldwide. Often, many of these courses cost a fraction of in-class learning because there are significantly lower overhead costs. A business degree in a physical university can costs over 20 thousand dollars in tuition, but the same degree completed online may only cost two thousand dollars.

Conclusion (points restated, argument strengthened, take-home-message)

In conclusion, although internet education can lack focus and interaction, its rise to stardom is fueled by its accessibility, cost, and variety. It is definitely an effective method of learning that is continuing to develop and helps propel humanity towards the next level of pedagogy.

Distance learning has become increasingly popular among professionals seeking to enhance their skills and knowledge. This trend has not gone unnoticed in IELTS Writing Task 2, where questions related to online education and its impact on working adults frequently appear. Analyzing the Question

Let’s examine a typical IELTS Writing Task 2 question related to the Benefits Of Distance Learning For Professionals :

Some people believe that distance learning is the most effective way for professionals to continue their education while working. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

This question asks you to express your opinion on the effectiveness of distance learning for working professionals. It’s important to note that you need to discuss both the advantages and potential drawbacks of distance learning to provide a balanced response.

Distance learning for professionals

Model Essays

Band 8-9 essay.

In today’s fast-paced world, the demand for continuous learning among professionals has never been higher . Distance learning has emerged as a popular solution, offering working adults the opportunity to enhance their skills without sacrificing their careers. While I largely agree that distance learning is an effective method for professionals to continue their education, there are some considerations to keep in mind.

The primary advantage of distance learning for professionals is its flexibility . Online courses allow individuals to study at their own pace and on their own schedule, making it possible to balance work commitments with educational pursuits. This flexibility is particularly beneficial for those with demanding jobs or family responsibilities. Furthermore, distance learning eliminates the need for commuting, saving valuable time and reducing stress associated with traditional classroom attendance.

Another significant benefit is the wide range of courses available through distance learning platforms. Professionals can access specialized programs from institutions worldwide, often at a lower cost than traditional on-campus options. This global access to education enables workers to stay current with industry trends and acquire new skills that are directly applicable to their careers.

However, it is important to acknowledge that distance learning may not be suitable for everyone. Some individuals thrive on face-to-face interactions and may find online learning less engaging. Additionally, certain practical skills may be challenging to acquire solely through virtual instruction, particularly in fields that require hands-on experience.

In conclusion, while distance learning offers numerous advantages for professionals seeking to continue their education, its effectiveness ultimately depends on individual learning styles and the nature of the subject matter. For many working adults, the flexibility and accessibility of online courses make it an invaluable tool for career advancement and personal growth.

Band 6-7 Essay

In recent years, distance learning has become a popular way for professionals to continue their education while working. I agree to a large extent that this method is effective, but there are also some drawbacks to consider.

One of the main advantages of distance learning for professionals is flexibility . People can study at times that suit them best, such as evenings or weekends, without having to leave their jobs. This means they can keep earning money while improving their skills. Another benefit is that online courses often cost less than traditional classes, making education more accessible to many people.

Distance learning also allows professionals to choose from a wide range of courses from different universities around the world. This gives them the opportunity to learn from experts in their field and gain knowledge that can help them in their careers. Additionally, studying online can help people develop important skills like time management and self-discipline, which are valuable in the workplace.

However, there are some disadvantages to distance learning. Some people may find it difficult to stay motivated without regular face-to-face interactions with teachers and classmates. There is also a risk of feeling isolated, which can affect learning. Furthermore, certain subjects or skills may be hard to learn entirely online , especially those that require practical experience.

In conclusion, while distance learning offers many benefits for professionals wanting to continue their education, it may not be suitable for everyone or every subject. It is an effective method for many people, but individuals should consider their own learning style and career goals when deciding whether to pursue online education.

Sample Essay 1

The evolving landscape of education strongly suggests that distance learning will ultimately dominate teaching and learning methodologies, potentially rendering traditional schooling obsolete. I firmly believe that the advancement of digital platforms and the growing emphasis on accessibility make this transition inevitable. This essay will delve into the unparalleled accessibility and adaptability of distance learning, as well as its cost-effectiveness, which are poised to redefine educational norms.

Firstly, the accessibility offered by online education is unparalleled, making learning possible for anyone with internet access. This inclusivity addresses educational disparities by providing quality education across diverse socio-economic backgrounds. For instance, rural students can attend virtual classes with resources comparable to those in urban centers, effectively democratizing education. Additionally, distance learning accommodates varying lifestyles and responsibilities, allowing people to learn at their convenience without sacrificing other obligations, thus promoting a culture of lifelong learning. The global pandemic has already demonstrated how effectively educational institutions can operate remotely, further solidifying the feasibility of a permanent shift towards online education.

Secondly, the economic advantages of distance learning are significant, both for educational institutions and students. The reduction in physical infrastructure costs enables institutions to redirect funds towards enhancing digital resources and improving teacher training, thus elevating the quality of education delivered online. Students benefit from reduced expenses related to travel and accommodations, making higher education more affordable and accessible to a broader demographic. Additionally, the integration of advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence and virtual reality in educational platforms can simulate realistic classroom settings and hands-on experiences, effectively bridging the gap between traditional and virtual learning environments. These technological advancements not only enrich the learning experience but also prepare students for future technological integrations in various professional fields.

In conclusion, the future trajectory of education strongly favors distance learning due to its extensive reach, adaptability, and cost efficiency. As digital platforms continue to evolve and simulate traditional learning environments effectively, the traditional educational model will likely become an adjunct, rather than the core, of educational delivery. The benefits of online learning not only make it a viable alternative but indeed, the likely future of education.

Sample Essay 2

The growing prevalence of distance learning has sparked debates about its potential to supplant traditional educational institutions. However, I firmly oppose the notion that distance learning will replace conventional schools as the primary mode of education. This essay will argue that the irreplaceable interpersonal interactions and tailored support offered by traditional schooling are essential for holistic student development and effective learning.

Firstly, traditional educational environments are vital for fostering critical social interactions that are indispensable for developing interpersonal skills. Schools are more than just academic learning spaces; they are vibrant communities where students learn to navigate social dynamics, resolve conflicts, and build relationships. These interactions are crucial for developing soft skills such as teamwork, leadership, and empathy, which are highly valued in the professional world. Moreover, the structured environment of traditional schools helps instill discipline and encourages a routine that is conducive to learning. Such frameworks are often lacking in distance learning setups, which can lead to reduced motivation and engagement among students. The absence of real-time interaction can also hinder the development of skills necessary for effective communication and collaboration in both academic and professional settings.

Secondly, the direct support and immediate feedback that students receive from teachers in traditional settings are profoundly beneficial. Face-to-face instruction allows teachers to adapt their teaching methods based on the immediate responses of their students, thus effectively addressing individual learning needs. This dynamic cannot be fully replicated in an online environment where feedback can be delayed and less personalized, often leading to misunderstandings or gaps in learning. Additionally, traditional schools offer extracurricular activities and hands-on learning experiences that are critical for a well-rounded education, providing opportunities for practical application of classroom knowledge that online platforms struggle to offer. These activities enhance students' educational experience by promoting critical thinking and problem-solving skills through real-world applications, further enriching their academic journey and preparedness for future challenges.

In conclusion, despite the advances in distance learning technologies, traditional educational institutions remain irreplaceable due to their role in social skill development and their ability to provide immediate, personalized support and hands-on learning opportunities.

Sample Essay 3

The advent of technology has ushered in speculations that distance learning might soon eclipse traditional educational systems. I contend that while distance learning will significantly shape future educational landscapes, it cannot entirely replace traditional schooling. This essay explores the scalability and accessibility of online education and the invaluable social skills fostered by conventional schooling.

Firstly, distance learning offers unprecedented scalability and flexibility, breaking geographical and financial barriers that often limit educational access. Platforms like Coursera and Khan Academy allow students from remote or underserved areas to access high-quality education, anytime and anywhere, thus substantially reducing the costs associated with maintaining physical infrastructures. Furthermore, the customization of learning pace and content means educational experiences can be specifically tailored to meet individual student needs, potentially increasing retention and satisfaction. For instance, a 2021 study by the University of Edinburgh demonstrated that students engaged in self-paced, online learning platforms performed 25% better in comprehension tests compared to their peers in traditional settings, highlighting the effectiveness of personalized learning environments.

However, the exclusivity of online education as the predominant method overlooks the critical developmental role of traditional schools in nurturing social skills and emotional intelligence. Traditional schools serve as vital arenas for social interaction and collaboration, fostering an environment where students can engage in face-to-face interactions with peers and educators. These interactions are essential for developing life skills such as empathy, teamwork, and effective communication. According to social learning theorists, such immersive experiences are instrumental in the holistic development of a child, providing necessary social cues and feedback that are often markedly subdued or absent in a solely virtual environment. Additionally, the structured setting of traditional schools helps instill discipline and routine, which are crucial for personal development and future professional environments.

In conclusion, while distance learning is poised to become a dominant educational tool due to its adaptability and broad reach, it cannot supplant the integral role that traditional schools play in comprehensive child development. The future likely holds a hybrid model where both systems coexist, complementing each other to provide a rounded educational experience.

The idea of providing distance education by numerous universities has become quite fashionable. Whilst I believe online courses to have great benefits in several cases, I presume that this trend may give rise to some downsides.

[do_widget id=custom_html-24]

On the one hand, I believe that this tendency is likely to be profitable. One noticeable advantage is an increase in academic chances for social members. The adoption of video-conferencing technologies and free-to-use group chats in Internet-based courses may serve to facilitate the study of busy workers without leaving their current jobs. Furthermore, students can get access to academic lectures by prominent professors from world-famous universities via e-learning classes. Another point in favour of is convenience. Online distance education enables students to not only take the initiative to plan their study schedule but also review lectures, discussions, comments or, share notes on demand.

[do_widget id=custom_html-47]

On the other hand, there appear to be potential shortcomings stemming from this trend. One disadvantage is the lack of interaction with the instructor and fellow classmates in the light of the internet disconnect. This procrastination may discourage learners from meeting their deadlines and completing their assignments. Students’ plagiarism and dishonesty are areas of concern as well. Some critics feel that it is easier to plagiarize or share answers owing to reduced surveillance and increased connectivity. Consequently, this copyright infringement could drive them to the verge of being expelled from the course of study.

Overall, based on what has been discussed above, it seems to me that learning activities through the medium of the internet have both favourable and adverse effects.

Technology has been soaring high and has impacted nearly every nook and corner of our daily lives and education is assuredly one of them too. There has been an ongoing trend of inclusion of online classes and of late, the online medium is being inclined towards more than ever. However, I feel this trend is good for the sake of human development and I shall be elucidating the same in the forthcoming sections.

There are innumerable positive impacts of this surge as it has reportedly helped a massive proportion of students and people of any age to learn at their own convenience and ease, which earlier was not that common to be seen. The people living in the remote areas and the rough terrains who owing to the geographical obstructions or weather conditions were somehow not able to be consistent with their learning as they used to often miss their schools/colleges, has now with the online alternative been relieved of such shortcomings. Moreover, for the skill enhancement too, it has become quite feasible for the people to go around, pick their favourite mentors around and learn at their pace without having to undergo the humdrum of finding an institute.

Secondly, online admissions to various coaching institutes and centres as well, are much affordable and providential as compared to the offline ones. The prime reason for this is having to pay jumbo taxes and bills in an offline setup. Then, had the e-mediums not been there, in the wake of the pandemic it would have been extremely difficult to even think of with the continuity of educating people around the world, and this would have curbed the learning process devastatingly. The best part that I personally find is the luxury of going through the classes for the people who were socially or physically restrained from doing so due to various reasons like physical disabilities, gender bias, age-shaming, etc. This has indeed revolutionized the whole status of education.

Some people though could put forth that online education may halt the learning process as it could impede the actual one on one interaction between a teacher and a student or among students, however, If the sessions are made interesting, interactive and stringent too, to a certain capacity like making everyone putting their camera on with a formal frame of conduct, such discrepancies could be ousted easily.

Conclusively, it could be stated that online education has indeed been a bonanza to mankind and a gift of technology that we should revere and exact the best benefits from.

Sample Answer:

There are many people who believe that living in a house is the best. However, some people disagree with this opinion and instead prefer to live in an apartment. This essay makes comparison of the two and chooses the most preferred option.

To begin with, living in a flat definitely brings several advantages to a resident. One of the most important reasons behind this is the huge convenience it offers. An apartment is a part of large building giving a feel of living in a small societal association which takes responsibility of any fix or repair or maintenance required. For example, if one needs to repair the roof, the maintenance charges are borne by the landlord. Moreover, various facilities as well as amenities are available nearby including shopping mall, tuition centre, medical store, bus station and so on.

On the other hand, living in an owned house does not offer the facilities that one can avail while living in an apartment. One reason for this is that it is quite lonely to stay in a house which occupies a large land area bringing boredom and snatching the joy of living with so many people around. For example, it would be such a dull experience of sitting alone in the garden with no one around to share life experiences. In addition to this, maintenance and cleanliness of the house are borne by the owner and thus it is costly to live in a house.

Conclusively, living in an apartment is comparatively better than staying lonely in a house. Though a house provides a large spacious area to move around but living in an apartment enhances more social interaction and adds more excitement to life.

(283 words)

Write an essay with minimum 250 words. Use the above mentioned vocabulary. 1. Some people think that learning online is more efficient. However, according to some other people, studying from books is still the preferred method. Which is the better method of learning out of the two?

2. Distance education is gaining popularity day by day and more students are enrolling through distance mode than full-time course in colleges. Make comparison of distance education and full-time course to find which is better and why.

3. A growing number of people own personal vehicle as they find it a convenient mode of transport in comparison to public transport. Compare the public and private mode of transportation and state which is better out of the two.

IELTS Writing Task 2: Online Education

Learning variants People are divided in their opinion regarding whether online courses serve for the betterment of students or,on the contrary, for the worse (1) . As far as I am concerned, I strongly support the view pointing at the bright side of the argument, although there are some negative aspects. Nevertheless, my reasons will be explained in the following paragraphs. First and foremost, the availability of online courses definitely contributes to the academic life of students with disabilities. Lacking sight or hearing should not represent a barrier towards learning and thus pursuing a university (2) . Moreover, learners who can not afford public transport due to poor financial stability can also be helped through this initiative. In other words, long distances no longer pose a criterion of selection between further and secondary education (3) . This online course levels the discrepancy between the opportunities a wealthy child would benefit from in comparison with a not so fortunate one. Another advantage of online teaching is the unique possibility of recording lessons for different purposes (4) . For instance, one can record a difficult presentation in order to recap and fully understand all the information provided. On the down side, hackers have become too skilled not to access these courses mainly designed to reach university students. Consequently, they might redistribute all data in exchange of a well defined sum of money, which according to the law represents an infringement of online policies (5) . Furthermore, students can now skip classes or simply not attend them, because they opine it is more convenient to pay attention to the lecture from home ( 6 ). As a result, this approach will lead to decreasing satisfaction about social life and joining an entourage . Considering the aforementioned, I still support online courses and I would certainly recommend them to any existing university or college. The advantages brought by this brilliant idea far outweigh the disadvantages.

The commentaries are marked in brackets with number (*). The numbered commentaries are found below. The part in  italics  is taken from the text, the word  underlined  is the suggested correction. Words in (brackets) are the suggested addition to the original phrase or sentence.

  • People are divided in their opinion regarding whether online courses serve for the betterment of students or,on the contrary, for the worsening  (?)— I would advise sticking to similar parts of speech in the case of ‘or’ conjunction. However, even after correction the second part of the sentence sounds rather awkward. Consider making the second part of the sentence clearer by using simpler constructions: — … whether online courses serve to improve students’ experience or, on the contrary, make it worse . The focus here shifts towards what students’ themselves feel about the change, rather than the originally intended idea of other people’s opinion about the online course. — … whether online courses (serve to) produce better students or, on the contrary, fail to do so — ending the sentence with ‘worse ones’ wouldn’t look or sound good, so I opted for a slightly different phrase.
  • Lacking sight or hearing should not represent a barrier towards learning and thus pursuing a university (degree) — ‘To pursue a university’ doesn’t convey the meaning of studying for a degree.
  • In other words, long distances no longer are a criterion of selection between further and secondary education  — ‘pose’ and ‘criterion’ do not collocate. The verb ‘pose’ is usually used with something that presents a challenge, problem, risk or something else with a negative connotation (but not everything!).
  • Another advantage of online learning is the unique possibility of recording lessons for different purposes. —  The reason I preferred ‘learning’ here is the sentence that follows this one, which develops the idea of advantages from a student’s point of view.
  • Consequently, they might redistribute all data in exchange for a well-defined sum of money, which according to the law represents an infringement of online policies — well-defined is a compound adjective and should be hyphenated.
  • Furthermore, students could now skip classes or simply not attend them, because they (would ) opine that it is more convenient to pay attention to the lecture from home. — Remember that we are talking about a hypothetical situation, so a use of second conditional is necessary.

A good piece of writing. All of the points were developed to sufficient extent, the structure is well-defined. Lexical and grammar aspects are of adequate level, albeit with occasional mistakes that nonetheless do not get in the way of understanding.

19.Universities and colleges are now offering qualifications through distance learning from the Internet rather than teachers in the classroom. Do you think the advantages of this development outweigh disadvantages?
