When Should I Apply?

As we get closer to August and the start of the next school year, one of the most common questions we see from students is “when can/should I apply?”. With so many different application open dates, it’s easy to get overwhelmed or confused.

So, when should you apply to the University of Iowa?

The simple answer is the fall of your senior year .

Now for the long answer: the University of Iowa doesn’t have an official “open date” for our application. We make admissions decisions on a rolling basis beginning late August, which means we provide decisions as they’re ready as opposed to waiting for a set date. For example, if you apply on August 1, you may have to wait until the end of the month or September for your decision. However, if you apply in October, your decision could be available in just a couple of weeks.

One thing to note here is that Iowa accepts applications through our own application as well as the Common Application . Both the University of Iowa application and the Common Application open August 1.

Is there an advantage to applying early?

Yes, and no. Beginning in 2021, Iowa implemented a November 1 Early Action deadline. This is not a binding agreement, but rather the date to maximize opportunities for college and/or department scholarships, honors program applications, housing applications, and other institutional deadlines. Basically, if you apply by November 1, you’ll be in the best position to be a Hawkeye!

Beyond making sure you have your application in prior to our deadlines (which vary based on department, interest, etc.), there is no benefit to applying the first day possible.

We encourage you to take your time and put your best foot forward on your application!

One other thing to remember: all three public Iowa universities use the Regent Admission Index (RAI) to inform admissions decisions*. The RAI is a formula to gauge whether you are admissible to the university. Learn more about the RAI here .

Your Transcript

• You must have a pdf of your unofficial transcript that you, yourself, will upload into the honors application. This is in addition to the official transcript your high school will need to send to the University for admission and other purposes.
• It takes time to obtain a copy of your high school transcript so give yourself at least two to three weeks before the application deadline.
• Your transcript needs to include your senior year classes.
• Transfer students - we will need your high school transcripts and your college transcripts including what courses are in progress now.
• Answer our prompt. When you have finished your essay ask yourself, again, "Have I answered the prompt?"
• Most applicants have good grades and scores, so your essay is key. We want to know YOUR story and assess your motivation to join a vibrant academic student community. Do not recycle an essay - recycled essays do not do well.
• Your essay will also be uploaded as a PDF. Draft your essay in your program of choice but then save it as a pdf that you can upload. 
• If you are not sure how to convert the document into a PDF, search engines are your friend! 

Edit for grammar and spelling.

Structure your essay in paragraph format to make it easy to read and follow along.

Your Activities

• In this section, you have the opportunity to share four (4) of the most meaningful extracurricular activities you were engaged in at some point during ninth grade to the present. 
• List the name of the actual group, employer, etc. in the first line of the activity, when applicable.  We want to see specific organizations or activities you're involved in here. That helps us get to know you much better. It also leaves you more space in the "Participation Details" line to give us your actual position or roles.

4 is the limit. Think carefully about what you would like to highlight.  You have had more than four experiences that are meaningful to you, so think about the story you want to tell about yourself to the admissions committee and which engagements fit that characterization.

Don't upload a resume as an "additional information" supplement.

We highly encourage you to provide a detailed description of those experiences. These descriptions should talk about what about this extracurricular activity was meaningful or important to you. Also note if you had a leadership role, if you won an award, and/or background information about the engagement. 

• Don't feel limited to just the usual extracurricular activities either. Talk about your employment, time-consuming hobbies, non-traditional volunteering, internships, research, student government, publications, or caregiving responsibilities.

Use acronyms and abbreviations carefully. Unless it is obvious, spell it out for us.

Optionally, you can tell us if you have any extenuating circumstances.

• Are there any extenuating circumstances that have impacted your time and/or performance in high school that you would like known/considered? Through this optional statement, you can share with us relevant pieces of your history that aren't told through the rest of your application materials.
• This includes, but is not limited to: health issues that affected grades for a specific period of time, family or community events that negatively affected your academic performance or ability to engage in activities. This doesn't need to be a formal essay - just let us know what's going on. If this part of the application is used to upload a resume or what appears to be a college admissions essay written on a prompt other than what we've requested, that information will be disregarded.

Northwestern Law School Accused of Bias Against White Men in Hiring

The lawsuit was filed a year after the Supreme Court struck down the use of racial and gender preferences in college admissions.

A conservative group filed a lawsuit against Northwestern University’s law school on Tuesday, claiming that its attempts to hire more women and people of color as faculty members violate federal law prohibiting discrimination against race and sex.

The complaint, coming just over a year after the Supreme Court struck down the use of affirmative action in college admissions, is expected to be among the first in a wave of new legal challenges attacking the way that American universities hire and promote professors .

The lawsuit , which was filed in Federal District Court in Chicago, calls that process “a cesspool of corruption and lawlessness.” It says Northwestern has deliberately sidelined white male candidates for faculty positions at the law school, giving preference to candidates of other races and gender identities.

Jon Yates, a Northwestern spokesman, said the university would defend its hiring practices in court. “Northwestern Pritzker School of Law is among the top law schools in the country, and we are proud of their outstanding faculty,” he said in a statement.

The complaint, filed by a group calling itself Faculty, Alumni and Students Opposed to Racial Preferences, named several candidates for teaching jobs at Northwestern, including well-known legal scholars who it said were denied interviews or blocked from advancing.

Of the 21 job offers made by the law school over the last three years, three went to white men, the suit says.

Applying to University of Iowa: A Quick Review

Like many large public schools, the University of Iowa admits students on a rolling basis. This means that there are no set deadlines and that admissions committees will review applications as they come in. You should apply as early as you can, while there are still spots available. If you want to apply for admission, be sure to submit the following materials:

• A completed Common Application, Coalition Application, Iowa Public Universities Application Portal application, or traditional institutional application
• Official ACT or SAT scores
• High school transcript
• A $40 non-refundable fee

Note that Iowa does not require letters of recommendation. Moreover, incoming freshmen have until July 1st to submit their final official high school transcripts.

University of Iowa Acceptance Rate: How Difficult Is It to Get In?

The University of Iowa has an acceptance rate of 86%, meaning that it accepts a majority of the students who apply. However, prospective Hawkeyes should note that the school has been enrolling fewer students in recent years. Last year, Iowa enrolled 32,948 freshmen, which represents a 1.8% drop from the 2017-2018 numbers.

Overall, students who are set on attending the University of Iowa have an excellent chance of being accepted, provided that they meet the minimum criteria for admission. 

So, How Does One Get Into University of Iowa?

The University of Iowa is passionate about admitting a knowledgeable and engaged student body. To that end, the admissions committee looks for students who have completed the following high school curriculum:

• 4 years of English/ language arts
• 3 years of natural sciences
• 3 years of social studies
• 3 years of algebra
• 2 years of world languages
• 1 year of geometry

Note that students applying to certain academic majors may face more stringent requirements. If you’re applying to the engineering or nursing schools at Iowa, be sure to check with the specific department to make sure your current high school coursework is sufficient.

Additionally, grades and test scores play a significant role in Iowa admissions decisions. If you’re applying straight from high school, Iowa will use a Regent Admission Index to evaluate the strength of your applicant profile. Known as the RAI, this score is calculated by adding the following:

• Percentile class rank x 1
• ACT composite score x 2
• Cumulative GPA x 20
• Number of years of high school core courses x 5

To be accepted, Iowa residents need a minimum RAI score of 245. Residents of other states need to score 255 or above to be competitive. 

How to Make Your Application Stand Out

Iowa favors students who excel academically. To that end, one of the best ways to stand out from the crowd is to impress the admissions committee with your grade point average. The average Iowa incoming freshman has a GPA of 3.63, which indicates a mix of As and Bs. If you want to give your transcript a boost, consider increasing the number of AP and IB classes you’re taking while in high school. Doing this can improve your weighted GPA while showing admissions counselors that you have what it takes to succeed at the college level.

Additionally, aspiring Iowa students should take steps to improve their standardized test scores. With an average SAT composite of 1305 and ACT of 26, Iowa holds applicants to a high standard. Consider finding an SAT tutor who can work with you to target those test areas known to drive the largest score increases.

What If You Get Rejected?

Information for High School and Community College Educators

University of Iowa now available on the Common Application

Starting this fall, the University of Iowa will be an option for students applying for college through the Common Application.

The University of Iowa will now provide four options for students to apply: the Common Application, the Coalition Application, the Iowa Public Universities Application Portal, and our traditional institutional application.  The Office of Admissions does not prefer one method of application over another and hopes that this additional application option will facilitate an easier application process for students.

Here are a few specific details about applying to the University of Iowa via the Common Application:

• Essays and Letters of Recommendation will not be required for students applying to Iowa via the Common Application just as they are not required through our institutional application.
• Students will self-report GPA, number of core course units completed and ACT/SAT test scores within the Common Application. The Courses and Grades section will not be used to submit this information.
• The Common Application requires school officials to upload a grade report for all students applying through the application. On the traditional institutional application, the University of Iowa does not typically ask for a grade report prior to a student’s decision to enroll. Admission decisions at Iowa are made using self-reported information provided by the student at the time of application.

The Common App allows students to have access to more than 800 colleges and universities from 49 U.S. states and 19 countries. One-third of the more than one million Common App applicants are the first in their family to pursue a college degree.

By becoming a Common App member, the University of Iowa will increase college access and help simplify the financial aid process for prospective students as the Common App provides applicants the opportunity to enter financial aid information into the application, streamlining the process for need-based fee waivers.

The acceptance rate at University of Iowa is 82.6% . For every 100 applicants, 83 are admitted.

This means the school is lightly selective . The school will have their expected requirements for GPA and SAT/ACT scores. If you meet their requirements, you're almost certain to get an offer of admission. But if you don't meet University of Iowa's requirements, you'll be one of the unlucky few people who gets rejected.

University of Iowa GPA Requirements

Many schools specify a minimum GPA requirement, but this is often just the bare minimum to submit an application without immediately getting rejected.

The GPA requirement that really matters is the GPA you need for a real chance of getting in. For this, we look at the school's average GPA for its current students.

Average GPA: 3.81

The average GPA at University of Iowa is 3.81 .

(Most schools use a weighted GPA out of 4.0, though some report an unweighted GPA.

With a GPA of 3.81, University of Iowa requires you to be near the top of your class , and well above average. Your transcript should show mostly A's. Ideally, you will also have taken several AP or IB classes to show that you can handle academics at a college level.

SAT and ACT Requirements

Each school has different requirements for standardized testing. Only a few schools require the SAT or ACT, but many consider your scores if you choose to submit them.

Many schools say they have no SAT score cutoff, but the truth is that there is a hidden SAT requirement. This is based on the school's average score.

Average SAT: 1235

The average SAT score composite at University of Iowa is a 1235 on the 1600 SAT scale.

This score makes University of Iowa Competitive for SAT test scores.

University of Iowa SAT Score Analysis (New 1600 SAT)

The 25th percentile SAT score is 1140, and the 75th percentile SAT score is 1330. In other words, a 1140 on the SAT places you below average, while a 1330 will move you up to above average .

SAT Score Choice Policy

The Score Choice policy at your school is an important part of your testing strategy.

University of Iowa has the Score Choice policy of "Highest Sitting."

This means that you can choose which SAT tests you want to send to the school. Of all the scores they receive, your application readers will consider the SAT score from your single highest test date (the sum of math, reading, and writing).

This is important for your testing strategy. Because you can choose which tests to send in, and University of Iowa only considers your highest score on a single test date, you can take the SAT as many times as you want, then submit your strongest score. Your application readers will only see that one score.

University of Iowa ACT Requirements

Just like for the SAT, University of Iowa likely doesn't have a hard ACT cutoff, but if you score too low, your application will get tossed in the trash.

Average ACT: 26

The average ACT score at University of Iowa is 26. This score makes University of Iowa Moderately Competitive for ACT scores.

The 25th percentile ACT score is 22, and the 75th percentile ACT score is 29.

ACT Score Sending Policy

If you're taking the ACT as opposed to the SAT, you have a huge advantage in how you send scores, and this dramatically affects your testing strategy.

Here it is: when you send ACT scores to colleges, you have absolute control over which tests you send. You could take 10 tests, and only send your highest one. This is unlike the SAT, where many schools require you to send all your tests ever taken.

This means that you have more chances than you think to improve your ACT score. To try to aim for the school's ACT requirement of 22 and above, you should try to take the ACT as many times as you can. When you have the final score that you're happy with, you can then send only that score to all your schools.

ACT Superscore Policy

By and large, most colleges do not superscore the ACT. (Superscore means that the school takes your best section scores from all the test dates you submit, and then combines them into the best possible composite score). Thus, most schools will just take your highest ACT score from a single sitting.

We weren't able to find the school's exact ACT policy, which most likely means that it does not Superscore. Regardless, you can choose your single best ACT score to send in to University of Iowa, so you should prep until you reach our recommended target ACT score of 22.

SAT/ACT Writing Section Requirements

Currently, only the ACT has an optional essay section that all students can take. The SAT used to also have an optional Essay section, but since June 2021, this has been discontinued unless you are taking the test as part of school-day testing in a few states. Because of this, no school requires the SAT Essay or ACT Writing section, but some schools do recommend certain students submit their results if they have them.

University of Iowa considers the SAT Essay/ACT Writing section optional and may not include it as part of their admissions consideration. You don't need to worry too much about Writing for this school, but other schools you're applying to may require it.

Final Admissions Verdict

Because this school is lightly selective, you have a great shot at getting in, as long as you don't fall well below average . Aim for a 1140 SAT or a 22 ACT or higher, and you'll almost certainly get an offer of admission. As long as you meet the rest of the application requirements below, you'll be a shoo-in.

But if you score below our recommended target score, you may be one of the very few unlucky people to get rejected.

Most are considered automatically, but for the Presidential Scholarship you need at least a 30 ACT (or a combined SAT Critical Reading and Math score of 1330) AND a 3.80 grade-point average (GPA) on a 4.00 scale, as well as a separate application. Standard Admission: Bachelor of Science in Nursing - Prelicensure

STANDARD ADMISSION FOR THE PRE-LICENSURE BSN

The College of Nursing recognizes that not all students have completed the requirements for direct admission out of high school and that there are many students who change their majors or pursue a second degree in nursing. The college is committed to offering an equal number of seats to students who follow this pathway. This program is competitive. Students must meet the minimum criteria noted below to be considered for admission to the pre-licensure undergraduate Bachelor of Science in Nursing program. Please note that meeting the requirements does not guarantee admission. Each application is holistically reviewed by faculty. Admission will be offered conditionally pending completion of all requirements.

Students who enroll at the University of Iowa as Nursing Interest students, or transfer students earn admission to the College of Nursing via the Standard Admission process. These students must complete designated prerequisites and apply for admission to the college after or while completing the final prerequisites for the nursing major.

The College of Nursing will admit a cohort of up to 80 students who begin the nursing major each spring semester. Students who choose the University of Iowa directly out of high school will have five semesters to complete prerequisite courses. These students should anticipate a minimum 4.5-year plan of study.

Current University of Iowa students should fill out the Change of College application located in MyUI . These students should work closely with their academic advisor to ensure they are on target for meeting all of the eligibility and admission requirements.

New transfer students should fill out the transfer application to the University of Iowa and select the College of Nursing. Click on the Transfer Admission Application to begin. Note that we only accept Standard Admission applications for the spring semester.

The Change of College and New Transfer application will open each cycle on December 1 .

All complete Standard Admission applications will be reviewed by the faculty admission committee. Admission is competitive, thus, meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee admission.

APPLICATION COMPONENTS FOR STANDARD ADMISSION

The Nursing application includes several essay questions and an opportunity to share about your activities, and work and/or volunteer experiences.

The essay questions are a very important part of your application. We recommend you prepare responses in a separate document (using Microsoft Word or a similar program) and paste them into the supplemental application. Preparing your response in a separate document will allow you to check your spelling and save your responses should you want to refer to them at a later date. Each essay question has a 1,500-character limit. A space is considered a character.

The Nursing application includes an opportunity to share about your activities and work and/or volunteer experiences. Applicants are encouraged to share several activities they have been involved in within the past five years with the faculty review committee as this information is an equally important part of the faculty review process.

As you respond to the essays and share activities, work, or volunteering experiences, be sure to articulate how these opportunities have developed you as a person and how this contributes to your ability to be a nurse in the future.

APPLICATION DEADLINES

The application deadline is February 27 (typically during a student’s second year).

In order for an application to be reviewed, students must meet all of the eligibility criteria and submit official transcripts. Transcripts must be received at the University of Iowa Office of Admissions by February 27 .

• Advanced Placement/Honors/Dual Enrollment Credit
• Demonstrated commitment of service to others
• Contribution to the College of Nursing commitment to diversity and inclusion
• Essay responses
• Experience that develops qualities that contribute to becoming a nurse
• Experience in caregiving
• Military service
• Understanding of Professional Nursing Practice

POSSIBLE FALL START In the rare event that seats become available in a fall-start cohort, the College of Nursing will consider offering a fall start to students who have applied and been selected for admission for Standard Admissions for the spring session and who meet the following criteria:

• Meet all published admissions standards, including a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA
• Have a minimum of 90 s.h. earned toward a degree, or have already earned a non-nursing undergraduate bachelor’s degree
• Have completed all prerequisites, including DEI for Health Professions, general education coursework, world language, and the physics requirement by June 1 of the application period

If you meet these criteria, please contact your academic advisor for guidance in developing an appropriate plan of study.

TOEFL REQUIREMENT FOR ADMISSION TO THE COLLEGE OF NURSING

International students seeking admission into the College of Nursing for either Direct Admission or Standard Admission must meet the requirements listed for that pathway. International students who are citizens of a country in which English is not the official language also are required to complete the following:

• For students (early admission or transfer) who are new to the University of Iowa and admitted directly to the College of Nursing as a pre-licensure BSN student, a score of 100 on the iBT TOEFL is required.
• University of Iowa students who are interested in studying nursing at Iowa, but have not yet earned admission to the College of Nursing must present a minimum iBT of 80 with no subscore lower than 17, and complete the English Proficiency Evaluation (unless they have a TOEFL score of 100 or higher on the iBT). Students may be required to complete English as a Second Language course work if specified as a result of the English Proficiency Evaluation. If such course work is required, it must be completed prior to the start of the nursing major.
• Exemptions may be granted for persons who have completed a bachelor’s degree (or higher) at an accredited university in the United States, United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada (excluding French Quebec), Africa (English speaking), Australia, or New Zealand.

TRANSFER STUDENTS

PLANNING FOR TRANSFER STUDENTS Students who are completing pre-requisites for the pre-licensure BSN program at a different college/university should begin with a transcript evaluation. This information from this free service will be invaluable to you as you prepare to meet the requirements for time of application and time of matriculation (enrollment) in our program should you be selected for admission.

Transcript Evaluation:

• Collect transcripts from all institutions where you have completed collegiate coursework. Scan the documents so that they can be attached to an email (pdf preferred). For a transcript evaluation, we do not need to see official transcripts. When you apply for admission, official transcripts will be required.
• Send an email to [email protected] and attach all transcripts. Please write "Transcript Evaluation Request" and your name in the subject line.
• In the text of the email, please note whether you completed one year of physics in high school, the number of years of which world (foreign) language that you completed in high school, and the list names of all institutions where you have completed collegiate coursework.
• An evaluation will be completed and returned to you electronically.

 With our MSc in Public Policy and Human Development (MPP) application deadlines approaching ( 1 May 2024 for non-EU applicants and 1 June 2024 for EU applicants), we thought we’d provide an overview of the application process and some helpful tips to support anyone who’s thinking about applying for the September 2024 intake.  

ℹ️  The documents you’ll need to apply to our MSc programme:

• A digital passport picture
• A digital copy of your passport / identity card
• A recent copy of your CV
• Two recommendation letters, from current or former professors and/or employers
• Digital copies of your degree(s) and lists of grades (if necessary, translated into English by an official translation agency)
• A motivation letter (400-500 words) which explains why you chose this programme and which convinces the Board of Admissions that you will complete the programme successfully
• An essay (1000 words in Word/PDF with searchable text) – details below
• Depending on your academic/work background, you may need to submit proof of language proficiency in English, find out if you meet the language requirements under the 'Additional requirements' section on this webpage .

📝 The essay element of the application:

MPP Admission Essay for Academic Year 2024/25 The problem: Globalisation, digitalisation, decarbonisation and demographic change are global challenges that are changing labour markets in most countries of the world. Individuals, firms and societies have to find ways to adapt to these challenges in order to maintain their livelihoods. Policymakers are called to come up with a policy response to ensure that societies can cope with the changes without negatively affecting people’s well-being and development. Instructions to applicants: Choose one of these global challenges affecting labour markets ( globalisation, digitalisation, decarbonisation or demographic change ) and:

• Provide a brief analysis of the problem (maximum 300 words), and
• Provide and argue a policy solution that governments should consider (maximum 700 words).

You are encouraged to use different sources, and you need to use at least one of the sources listed on this webpage . The essay should display a sufficient level of English and an appropriate academic writing style, including the use of references.

💡 Tips on how to write a good admission essay:

✅ When writing your essay, make sure to read the instructions carefully and follow them. ✅ Proper referencing is important - if you are unsure about how to do this, this tutorial published by the Maastricht University Library will give you a more concrete idea of how to acknowledge sources and cite references. ✅ While the use of references is recommended, it is also important to use your own voice and present your own ideas when writing the essay. ✅ Provide practical examples and focus on a policy solution, maybe two, that you can justify adequately and elaborate on instead of superficially enumerating different options. ✅ Be critical, and discuss potential pitfalls of your policy recommendation and how they can be addressed.  

🎯 General advice about the application process:

✅ When writing your motivation letter, it is not necessary to repeat all the information listed in your CV. Use the space instead (and try to keep the length to roughly 400-500 words) to explain why you are interested in the MPP programme and why you picked UNU-MERIT/Maastricht University for your master’s studies. Also, bear in mind that our Board of Admissions is looking for highly motivated individuals who are aiming to use public policy to solve real-life problems and are committed to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals, so be sure to demonstrate your personal interest in these topics. When doing this, be realistic – short- or medium-term goals that are concrete and plausible are more effective when conveying your motivation to pursue the MPP. Finally, you may also briefly write about the value you can bring to the whole MPP cohort, not just what the MPP will mean for you and your career. ✅ The MPP is an interdisciplinary master's programme. With the application process, we want to make sure that you are able to learn topics that you have not heard about before and build on other topics that you have already learned about in your prior studies. We look at your application in a holistic way to ensure that you are equipped with the knowledge, skills, and motivation to enjoy and take advantage of the MPP. ✅ Pay special attention to the essay, since with this requirement we assess your analytical capacity and your critical thinking. ✅ If you have obtained multiple degrees, e.g. a bachelor’s and a master’s, don't forget to upload the diploma and transcripts for both degrees. ✅ Request your referees to provide a ‘non-generic’ letter more than two or three sentences long, as their unique insights on your skills and qualifications will be valuable. ✅ Before submitting your application, go over the requirements again and check that you have everything ready and as specified in the admission guidelines. An incomplete application causes delays in the assessment so please make sure all documents are in good order before you hit the submit button.

• Essay: An essay or personal statement is required by some for admission consideration and you will be notified if it is needed.
• Application Fee: There is a non-refundable $40 application fee.

The Olin MBA admissions essay: Focusing on what makes your experience and values unique

Every student applying to an MBA program wants to be seen as exceptional in some way.

Without appearing as a vain Hercules on paper, there are methods to convey value as a prospective student without resorting to worn clichés or unsubstantiated claims.   

Olin Business School places a high value on equity, diversity, and inclusion. They believe a diverse student body is beneficial to all MBA students. A student's life experiences can make them a valuable member of Olin's student body and the way they communicate their experience matters. Here are four MBA application essay tips that have helped prospective students get accepted into Olin Business School.

They don't use AI

It might sound tempting to use AI to make essays sound professional; however, let's discuss how AI operates. AI functions by mining the internet for content, which it then repurposes into (supposedly) new forms. If this seems a lot like plagiarism, that's because it's a legal gray area that has not yet been fully reconciled with existing legal definitions of plagiarism.

Since AI uses existing content as a model, the essay it produces may sound bland and uninspired. A student's voice and personality may not shine through as much. If a student wants to stand out in the MBA admission process, they will need to sound wholly original to themselves.

They show (rather than tell) their story

Besides ensuring the MBA admission essay communicates how a student prevents errors from slipping by undetected, this is an opportunity for them to narrate their life and be creative.

An essay prompt is presented in the online application, giving prospective students an opportunity to share their values, strengths and weaknesses. The essay is their time to provide the committee with a narrative and showcase their creativity and the impact they hope to have on those around them. They should use this opportunity to tell their story, allowing the committee to see the person they are and the person they hope to become. Students should demonstrate how they are living out their values with real-life examples. They must ask themselves, "What can I bring to Olin that no one else can?" and communicate this with confidence.

They demonstrate why they chose Olin

When a prospective student is writing, they should focus on why the MBA program at Olin can help them achieve their goals and how Olin Business School can help them make the impact they're aiming to make on the world. Every student should take time to reflect on what they hope to get out of an MBA degree and determine what factors are most important to the program they intend to pursue.

They don't use generic templates

No matter how many MBA programs a student may wish to apply to, they should write a new essay for each program from scratch. They shouldn't rely on a generic template and simply change a few words.

Students should slow down and spend ample time writing something unique—it makes a big difference. The evaluators of MBA admission essays can easily detect a generic essay, as it often lacks relevance and focus.

It's easy to discern whether prospective students have thoroughly contemplated their MBA admission essay or merely checked it off their to-do list. If they are unsure whether their essay reads well or aligns with the prompt, they should ask someone they trust to read their essay. Then, they should ask this person to tell them what they assumed the prompt was. Their response will help the student determine if their essay is aligned with the prompt or if adjustments are needed.

How to apply

Complete the common application.

The Common Application  will provide us with your essential demographic information. To add Linfield to your Common Application:

• Login to your Common Application account
• Click on the College Search tab
• Search for Linfield
• Click on the Blue plus sign next to Linfield in the search results

Submit a personal essay and member question

Your writing will be used to understand your communication skills, as well as an opportunity to learn more about you as a person and student. Select a topic or prompt that will be interesting and meaningful to you. Write, review and revise as you would for any school paper or project seeking a grade.

Linfield requires you to submit the personal essay. You can find this under the writing section of the Common Application. The topics, which may change each year, are included on the Common Application. It is limited to 650 words.

You will also be required to submit a short answer (no more than 250 words) to a question specific to Linfield. You will find it under Linfield, on the My Colleges tab:

• What fictional character would you choose as your college roommate and why?

Request school report and transcripts

Your school counselor or administrator will submit the following documents on your behalf through the Common Application or another electronic platform. 

• A school report providing demographic information about your school
• An official secondary school transcript showing all courses and grades through the most recently completed term.
• A US college or university, send us your official college/university transcripts
• An international college or university, send us your WES course by course credential evaluation
• Board exams, if applicable

Instructions in Common Application:

On the My Colleges tab, under Linfield, you will find a Recommenders and FERPA section. Here, you will submit the FERPA Release Authorization, which authorizes the release of your educational records, and invite your counselor and teacher to submit these materials.

As part of the FERPA Release Authorization, you have the right to waive or not waive the review of documents submitted on your behalf. Once completed, you may invite your counselor or administrator.

Provide financial documentation

If you are applying as a degree-seeking international student (those who would like to study at Linfield under an F-1 visa) you are required to submit financial documentation. As part of the process to issue necessary immigration documents, international student applicants must demonstrate their financial contributions through the International Financial Guarantee Form and a certified bank statement.

Admission will not be offered to international students with a balance between the cost of attendance, scholarship offered and funding demonstrated.

English proficiency exams

International student applicants whose first language is not English and have completed fewer than two years of coursework in a secondary school, college or university where English is the primary instructional language must send an official score report of an English proficiency exam. Linfield accepts the following exam types and scores for conditional admission to our English Language and Culture Program or full admission directly into their degree program.

Test scores are official if submitted directly from the testing agency. Test scores are not considered official if they are included on the application or sent directly from the student or parent.

Important dates and deadlines

We recommend you apply by the following priority deadlines. Doing so will allow plenty of time to apply for your student visa, meet with your advisor, register and prepare for classes.

For fall semester admission:

• Priority application deadline: April 15
• You'll receive a response from Linfield: May 15
• If accepted, your reply to the offer of admission including the $400 matriculation (enrollment ) fee due: June 15

For spring semester admission:

• Priority application deadline: December 1
• You'll receive a response from Linfield: December 15
• If accepted, your reply to the offer of admission including $400 matriculation (enrollment ) fee due: January 15

You can select whether you pay the matriculation fee in US dollars using a credit card or bank transfer or in another currency using a bank transfer. Matriculation fees are non-refundable after the priority enrollment deadlines listed above.
