The idea of life's purpose is complex matter and can't be explained so easily. What is not can be listed in many ways, but can't be told directly what it is. The dialogues in second half especially after doing some good things Vikram returns and character Ms Sudharani (Nurse) says has in-depth meaning and probably the dialogue writer has made maximum effort in depicting the nub of the story & concept of the movie. Congrats to Director and whole team especially Ms Sudharani, Achyutkumar and Suneel Rao.

Actor Sunil Rao had been saying that he wanted to make a comeback with a film which is not only different, but which is also memorable. This week’s release ‘Thurthu Nirgamana’ has both the qualities, which the actor had wished for.

‘Thurthu Nirgamana’ is a film which is very much different from the regular commercial films with songs and action sequences. The film has nothing of that sort to boast off, but has a unique storyline which has not been tried in Kannada film industry.

The film starts off with a good for nothing youth called Vikram (Sunil) dying in a road accident. He gets an opportunity to relieve the last three days of his life one again. Vikram thinks this is a dream and continues to be his self. After a couple of chances, he understands that he is indeed dead and before leaving the body he has some unaccomplished work. What all does he accomplishes in these three days forms the crux of the film.

As said earlier, ‘Thurthu Nirgamana’ is a story, which has not been tried at least on Kannada screen. The concept of Time Loop is very new to Kannada and that’s what makes the film fresh and unique. However, there are a few moments which may make the viewers tiring.

Firstly, a couple of sequences (which is very much needed to continue the story) look repetitive. The audience has to watch in patience till the end and understand the significance of it. If not understood, then the whole film is gone for a toss. Secondly, there are a few magic realism moments which are very new to Kannada film viewers which might seem not logical. Last but not the least; the film could have been trimmed off to avoid some lagging moments. Apart from a few flaws, ‘Thurthu Nirgamana’ is definitely a different watch.

After a long wait, it is definitely a worthy comeback for Sunil Rao. The actor excels in the role of Vikram. Senior actress Sudharani is seen in a different role, which has no references. Achyuth Kumar succeeds in tickling the funny bones of the audience. Samyukta Hegde, Hitha Chandrashekhar, Aruna Balraj, Nagendra Shaan and others give adequate support.

Thurthu Nirgamana review: Delightful take on life and living as told through story of a dead man

In a film where the first scene is of the hero lying in a mortuary, can you expect to smile, even laugh as you ponder over life and its mysteries? Yes, if it is Thurthu Nirgamana (Emergency Exit), written, directed and produced by Hemanth Kumar L. The film plays on loop as 32-year-old Vikram (Suneel Rao), who is floundering in life, refuses to accept he’s dead, bargains with a nurse in the afterlife (a lovely, lovely Sudharani who triggers most of the philosophical talk) and spins a wheel to get three additional days to do what he has to do before he dies again. Vikram comes alive on January 23 and keeps dying after every third day, because he’s trying to evade death and does nothing fruitful, and Jeevan (Achyuth Kumar doing brilliant Achyuth Kumar things), who ended his life, is tasked with resuscitating him. When Vikram wonders why this is his plight now, Jeevan quips: “You should have read the offer document carefully. Conditions apply!” You laugh despite the macabre humour.

Eventually, Vikram figures out what he needs to do, but the journey to getting there is not an easy one.

We’ve all met a Vikram or two in our lives. Boys with a sense of entitlement, who think they need to sleep in longer, who think their girlfriends must be at their beck and call, who think it is perfectly all right to insist on holding hands in the theatre even when the girl does not want to, who think they are better than their parents and sibling, who think some jobs are not their cup of tea.

Suneel is marvellous as Vikram — he channelises all the inner confusion of someone like Vikram, who looks all genteel from the outside but has many jagged edges within. You want to shake him up and make him see sense, much like what Jeevan wants to do.

This much of a story we gathered from the trailer itself, but where Hemanth shines is in the writing. Deep philosophy gets conveyed in routine exchanges with a lightness of touch, much needed in a film that is all about conversations.

Everything in the film is so lived in. Be it Vikram playing cricket with young kids, or his off-on relationship with his mother Saraswathi (a precious Aruna Balaraj), his hardworking sister Srushti (Amrutha Ramamoorthy) who is very different from him, or his father Lakshman (Nagendra Shaan), who has come around to accepting his son might not do much as seen through society’s eyes, and still loses a match on the badminton court 21-11 to make him happy. The same father whose face flushes with quiet pride when the son drops him at the bus stop, and who slips in some money to help him with expenses.

And this lived-in-ness comes from the writing. Which is why you feel so much for the characters, even after you know what has happened and what will eventually happen. You actually enter the world inhabited by Vikram and Saraswathi and Srushti.

Things change when Vikram meets Sindhu (a perky Samyuktha Hegde who coaches girls in cricket) and goes on a date with her after she gets him out within three balls. Sindhu is almost angel-like in how she deals with Vikram. As he says, she’s the first person who asked him how he is, and not what he’s doing. She’s the catalyst who sets him on a path that will give him redemption.

Life is not just about success, but also about closing loops and making your apologies, and giving every relationship its complete arc. That’s what Vikram eventually sets out to do, revisiting his entire life in three days and knowing he must do better before leaving.

Somewhere along this journey, he crosses paths with Shivu (Raj B Shetty playing the everyman as only he can, his voice taking on the heaviness of tears and his face lighting up like he’s seen god when he holds his child), a cab driver with an aged mother and pregnant wife who is being chased by loan sharks. That interval sequence is pure poetry. Hemanth even gives an arc for the wife and mother, placing Shivu’s life in context.

One is often used to language pride references in Tamizh films, and it was delightful to hear Jeevan ask, “If everything is written in English, where will Kannada bodies go?” The nameboard suddenly changes languages.

If I have a problem with the film, it is with the tone-deafness with which it addresses the issue of suicide. This is especially startling because the rest of the film is written with such sensitivity — nothing is loud, and no one seems force-fitted. Not everyone chooses suicide as the easy way out. We don’t know what they were going through and it is not in our place to judge. Extend help before, when a person is suffering. Don’t deride after a deed is done!

Also, when Vikram seeks to make his sister’s boyfriend understand her better, the mother, who is the one batting for the daughter to live her life on her terms, gets completely left behind. Why, one wonders, in a film that has very well-written non-caricaturish women characters.

Ironically, the film ends up using suicide as a crutch to explain the action of a key character so that another might get to live out his life.

Music by Dossmode is haunting in places, aching in others, and the background score is a fellow viewer of sorts. The cinematography by Prayag Mukundan is eerily lovely and takes you everywhere from today’s reality to tomorrow’s afterlife to that infinite space in between. It’s magical how he makes you feel you’re in that dream-like space where you’re free but not quite. Editor B Ajithkumar ensures the film, despite the constant back and forth, stays on track.

Focus on the title credits that play out, especially the ‘thank you’ section. It’s so thoughtfully written out and you understand the film’s heart better.

This is one emergency exit you won’t mind taking because there’s so much learning at the end of it. And, also because if you want Kannada cinema to go places, it is important to acknowledge the small gems as much as one looks at the big-budget solitaires.

Released on June 24, the movie is currently running in cinemas.

Sunil Raoh: My role in Thurthu Nirgamana is relatable to all middle-class households

Director Hemanth Kumar’s Thurthu Nirgamana brings together two interesting actors Sunil Raoh and Raj B Shetty as part of the ensemble cast that also consists of Sudha Rani, Achyuth Kumar, Hitha Chandrashekar, and Samyuktha Hegde among others. The dark comedy marks the comeback of Sunil. The title of the film means Emergency Exit and has an interesting premise: what happens when a person is given a chance to relive the last few days of his life. In a conversation with CE ahead of the film’s release on June 24, the two actors open up about the film.

Sunil Raoh was last seen in Premism which was released in 2010. When asked about the long hiatus he explains, “I wanted to take a small break because I felt I was getting monotonous. I planned to get back to acting much earlier, but it was delayed further by 6 to 7 years. Finally, after 12 years, I am back. However, I did a web series called Loose Connection , which brought me back to the silver screen.”

Sunil notes the biggest change in the film industry that happened during his absence is the shift from film to digital cameras. “Earlier, with films, there was a lot of pressure on the actors and technicians because we worried about wasting film reels. So, we wouldn’t take more than 2 or 3 takes and we didn’t make too many mistakes. With the advancement in technology, people from different walks of life can come and follow their passion. Our director, Hemanth Kumar is one of the best examples. He’s an engineer, who has quit his job because he wanted to make films. On the flip side, I feel things are taken for granted today because of the ease in filmmaking.”

When probed about his role, Sunil reveals, “My role, Vikram, is relatable to all middle-class households. He is an intelligent guy with a laid-back attitude. He has no value for time and life, leads an aimless life, and is happy to be stuck in a rut. What happens when such a person faces an emergency and has no choice but to act? That’s the crux of this story,” says Sunil Raoh.

Talking about acting with a happening actor like Raj B Shetty, he says it was not intimidating though he has not been acting for a while. “I never felt insecure in my life, because I never had any great ambition of becoming a star. With whatever projects I have done, I built an image of a good enough actor and got the recognition of the people. Moreover, Raj is not one of the actors, who wants to go one up and stay ahead. We shared some intense scenes and our off-the-screen chemistry helped us do well. It was a learning experience for me, which translated very well on the screen. Whenever two actors come together for a film, there should be a sort of chemistry between them for the film to work. I admire co-artistes who are open to discussions as it makes my job interesting and easy,” he says.

Sunil was also in praise of the director Hemanth Kumar. “The director has made such a good film that we should all be proud. I’m happy that the Kannada industry is getting another important director and someone who can contribute to the industry’s growth.” Sunil will officially announce the next project after the release of Thurthu Nirgamana .

Raj B Shetty plays the role of a cab driver named Shivu. “It is the first script I got to read after Ondhu Motteya Kathe . It was the well-written character that caught my interest. Even though my role is small, the impact will be big,” Raj says.

Talking about working with Sunil, he says, “Working with him was a joy. Even though we both come from two different schools of cinema, we got along well on the sets. When you are committed to the film, you have to observe fellow actors, understand their rhythm, and adjust accordingly for the betterment of the film. That way Sunil supported my scenes and performance. I consider this as a good collaboration,” he says.

Calling it a sci-fi genre, Raj says that Thurthu Nirgama is a very apt title for the film and strongly recommends it for all individuals. “Every individual at one point wishes to travel back in time and correct something about their life. The title and the film are all about that,” he signs off.

Actor Sunil Rao had been saying that he wanted to make a comeback with a film which is not only different, but which is also memorable. This week’s release ‘Thurthu Nirgamana’ has both the qualities, which the actor had wished for.

‘Thurthu Nirgamana’ is a film which is very much different from the regular commercial films with songs and action sequences. The film has nothing of that sort to boast off, but has a unique storyline which has not been tried in Kannada film industry.

The film starts off with a good for nothing youth called Vikram (Sunil) dying in a road accident. He gets an opportunity to relieve the last three days of his life one again. Vikram thinks this is a dream and continues to be his self. After a couple of chances, he understands that he is indeed dead and before leaving the body he has some unaccomplished work. What all does he accomplishes in these three days forms the crux of the film.

As said earlier, ‘Thurthu Nirgamana’ is a story, which has not been tried at least on Kannada screen. The concept of Time Loop is very new to Kannada and that’s what makes the film fresh and unique. However, there are a few moments which may make the viewers tiring.

Firstly, a couple of sequences (which is very much needed to continue the story) look repetitive. The audience has to watch in patience till the end and understand the significance of it. If not understood, then the whole film is gone for a toss. Secondly, there are a few magic realism moments which are very new to Kannada film viewers which might seem not logical. Last but not the least; the film could have been trimmed off to avoid some lagging moments. Apart from a few flaws, ‘Thurthu Nirgamana’ is definitely a different watch.

After a long wait, it is definitely a worthy comeback for Sunil Rao. The actor excels in the role of Vikram. Senior actress Sudharani is seen in a different role, which has no references. Achyuth Kumar succeeds in tickling the funny bones of the audience. Samyukta Hegde, Hitha Chandrashekhar, Aruna Balraj, Nagendra Shaan and others give adequate support.

Thurthu Nirgamana on OTT: Where to watch Suneel Raoh’s comeback film

The dark comedy about reliving the last three days of the protagonist’s life in a loop is now available to stream

Back in early 2020, Kannada actor Suneel Raoh was busy planning the release of his comeback film Thurthu Nirgamana, when the pandemic struck and derailed everything. It wasn’t until after the third wave and cinema halls went back to 100 per cent capacity earlier this year that the team decided to bring the film to theatres, all the while steadfastly refusing to give it a direct-to-OTT outing. The visuals of the film, reckoned the team, were meant for a big-screen viewing and releasing it on OTT would be disservice to the efforts of cinematographer Prayag Mukundan.

Thurthu Nirgamana, which literally translates to Emergency Exit, is a fantasy flick, the story of which follows the protagonist who dies unexpectedly and is then given the opportunity to go back in time to three days before his passing. The film is about what one would do when given a chance to relive/change the last few days. The actor took up the project because of its wacky subject, in which he plays Vikram, a laidback guy who does not value time and life, until his death. How he then realizes the value of time and interpersonal relationships forms the crux of the narrative.

Released in theatres on June 24, the film, which also stars Sudharani, Achyuth Kumar, Samyuktha Hegde, Hitha Chandrashekar and Raj B Shetty in pivotal roles, received positive reviews. Prior to the release, Sudharani had said, “I am as excited about Thurthu Nirgamana as I was about my debut film Anand and feel like a newcomer. I have not seen this kind of a film in my career so far and am fortunate to have gotten the opportunity to be a part of it.” The actress played the gatekeeper to the portal that allows the protagonists to ‘return to life’.

The film, directed by Hemanth Kumar is now available to stream. The digital rights had been picked up by Amazon Prime Video. Thurthu Nirgamana is available in Kannada with English subtitles.
