Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Starting with the Yale School of Medicine (YSM) graduating class of 2002, the Cushing/Whitney Medical Library and YSM Office of Student Research have collaborated on the Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library (YMTDL) project, publishing the digitized full text of medical student theses on the web as a valuable byproduct of Yale student research efforts. The digital thesis deposit has been a graduation requirement since 2006. Starting in 2012, alumni of the Yale School of Medicine were invited to participate in the YMTDL project by granting scanning and hosting permission to the Cushing/Whitney Medical Library, which digitized the Library’s print copy of their thesis or dissertation. A grant from the Arcadia Fund in 2017 provided the means for digitizing over 1,000 additional theses. Thesis Title: Examples and Suggestions from a PhD Grad

Graphic of a researcher writing, perhaps a thesis title

When you’re faced with writing up a thesis, choosing a title can often fall to the bottom of the priority list. After all, it’s only a few words. How hard can it be?!

In the grand scheme of things I agree that picking your thesis title shouldn’t warrant that much thought, however my own choice is one of the few regrets I have from my PhD . I therefore think there is value in spending some time considering the options available.

In this post I’ll guide you through how to write your own thesis title and share real-world examples. Although my focus is on the PhD thesis, I’ve also included plenty of thesis title examples for bachelor’s and master’s research projects too.

Hopefully by the end of the post you’ll feel ready to start crafting your own!

Why your thesis title is at least somewhat important

It sounds obvious but your thesis title is the first, and often only, interaction people will have with your thesis. For instance, hiring managers for jobs that you may wish to apply for in the future. Therefore you want to give a good sense of what your research involved from the title.

Many people will list the title of their thesis on their CV, at least for a while after graduating. All of the example titles I’ve shared below came from my repository of academic CVs . I’d say roughly 30% of all the academics on that page list their thesis title, which includes academics all the way up to full professor.

Your thesis title could therefore feature on your CV for your whole career, so it is probably worth a bit of thought!

My suggestions for choosing a good thesis title

  • Make it descriptive of the research so it’s immediately obvious what it is about! Most universities will publish student theses online ( here’s mine! ) and they’re indexed so can be found via Google Scholar etc. Therefore give your thesis a descriptive title so that interested researchers can find it in the future.
  • Don’t get lost in the detail . You want a descriptive title but avoid overly lengthy descriptions of experiments. Unless a certain analytical technique etc was central to your research, I’d suggest by default* to avoid having it in your title. Including certain techniques will make your title, and therefore research, look overly dated, which isn’t ideal for potential job applications after you graduate.
  • The title should tie together the chapters of your thesis. A well-phrased title can do a good job of summarising the overall story of your thesis. Think about each of your research chapters and ensure that the title makes sense for each of them.
  • Be strategic . Certain parts of your work you want to emphasise? Consider making them more prominent in your title. For instance, if you know you want to pivot to a slightly different research area or career path after your PhD, there may be alternative phrasings which describe your work just as well but could be better understood by those in the field you’re moving into. I utilised this a bit in my own title which we’ll come onto shortly.
  • Do your own thing. Having just laid out some suggestions, do make sure you’re personally happy with the title. You get a lot of freedom to choose your title, so use it however you fancy. For example, I’ve known people to use puns in their title, so if that’s what you’re into don’t feel overly constrained.

*This doesn’t always hold true and certainly don’t take my advice if 1) listing something in your title could be a strategic move 2) you love the technique so much that you’re desperate to include it!

Why I regret my own choice of PhD thesis title

I should say from the outset that I assembled my thesis in quite a short space of time compared to most people. So I didn’t really spend particularly long on any one section, including the title.

However, my main supervisor even spelled out for me that once the title was submitted to the university it would be permanent. In other words: think wisely about your title.

What I started with

Initially I drafted the title as something like: Three dimensional correlative imaging for cartilage regeneration . Which I thought was nice, catchy and descriptive.

I decided to go for “correlative imaging” because, not only did it describe the experiments well, but it also sounded kind of technical and fitting of a potential pivot into AI. I’m pleased with that bit of the title.

What I ended up with

Before submitting the title to the university (required ahead of the viva), I asked my supervisors for their thoughts.

One of my well intentioned supervisors suggested that, given that my project didn’t involve verifying regenerative quality, I probably shouldn’t state cartilage regeneration . Instead, they suggested, I should state what I was experimenting on (the materials) rather than the overall goal of the research (aid cartilage regeneration efforts).

With this advice I dialled back my choice of wording and the thesis title I went with was:

Three dimensional correlative imaging for measurement of strain in cartilage and cartilage replacement materials

Reading it back now I’m reminder about how less I like it than my initial idea!

I put up basically no resistance to the supervisor’s choice, even though the title sounds so much more boring in my opinion. I just didn’t think much of it at the time. Furthermore, most of my PhD was actually in a technique which is four dimensional (looking at a series of 3D scans over time, hence 4D) which would have sounded way more sciency and fitting of a PhD.

What I wish I’d gone with

If I had the choice again, I’d have gone with:

Four-dimensional correlative imaging for cartilage regeneration

Which, would you believe it, is exactly what it states on my CV…

Does the thesis title really matter?

In all honesty, your choice of thesis title isn’t that important. If you come to regret it, as I do, it’s not the end of the world. There are much more important things in life to worry about.

If you decide at a later stage that you don’t like it you can always describe it in a way that you prefer. For instance, in my CV I describe my PhD as I’d have liked the title to be. I make no claim that it’s actually the title so consider it a bit of creative license.

Given that as your career progresses you may not even refer back to your thesis much, it’s really not worth stressing over. However, if you’re yet to finalise your thesis title I do still think it is worth a bit of thought and hopefully this article has provided some insights into how to choose a good thesis title.

My advice for developing a thesis title

  • Draft the title early. Drafting it early can help give clarity for the overall message of your research. For instance, while you’re assembling the rest of your thesis you can check that the title encompasses the research chapters you’re included, and likewise that the research experiments you’re including fall within what the title describes. Drafting it early also gives more time you to think it over. As with everything: having a first draft is really important to iterate on.
  • Look at some example titles . Such as those featured above!
  • If you’re not sure about your title, ask a few other people what they think . But remember that you have the final say!

I hope this post has been useful for those of you are finalising your thesis and need to decide on a thesis title. If you’ve enjoyed this article and would like to hear about future content (and gain access to my free resource library!) you can subscribe for free here:

Radiology Thesis Topics RadioGyan.com

Introduction

A thesis or dissertation, as some people would like to call it, is an integral part of the Radiology curriculum, be it MD, DNB, or DMRD. We have tried to aggregate radiology thesis topics from various sources for reference.

Not everyone is interested in research, and writing a Radiology thesis can be daunting. But there is no escape from preparing, so it is better that you accept this bitter truth and start working on it instead of cribbing about it (like other things in life. #PhilosophyGyan!)

Start working on your thesis as early as possible and finish your thesis well before your exams, so you do not have that stress at the back of your mind. Also, your thesis may need multiple revisions, so be prepared and allocate time accordingly.

Tips for Choosing Radiology Thesis and Research Topics

Keep it simple silly (kiss).

Retrospective > Prospective

Retrospective studies are better than prospective ones, as you already have the data you need when choosing to do a retrospective study. Prospective studies are better quality, but as a resident, you may not have time (, energy and enthusiasm) to complete these.

Choose a simple topic that answers a single/few questions

Original research is challenging, especially if you do not have prior experience. I would suggest you choose a topic that answers a single or few questions. Most topics that I have listed are along those lines. Alternatively, you can choose a broad topic such as “Role of MRI in evaluation of perianal fistulas.”

You can choose a novel topic if you are genuinely interested in research AND have a good mentor who will guide you. Once you have done that, make sure that you publish your study once you are done with it.

Get it done ASAP.

In most cases, it makes sense to stick to a thesis topic that will not take much time. That does not mean you should ignore your thesis and ‘Ctrl C + Ctrl V’ from a friend from another university. Thesis writing is your first step toward research methodology so do it as sincerely as possible. Do not procrastinate in preparing the thesis. As soon as you have been allotted a guide, start researching topics and writing a review of the literature.

At the same time, do not invest a lot of time in writing/collecting data for your thesis. You should not be busy finishing your thesis a few months before the exam. Some people could not appear for the exam because they could not submit their thesis in time. So DO NOT TAKE thesis lightly.

Do NOT Copy-Paste

Reiterating once again, do not simply choose someone else’s thesis topic. Find out what are kind of cases that your Hospital caters to. It is better to do a good thesis on a common topic than a crappy one on a rare one.

Books to help you write a Radiology Thesis

Event country/university has a different format for thesis; hence these book recommendations may not work for everyone.

Healthcare organizations now consider increased efficiency, reduced costs, improved patient care and quality of services, and safety when they are planning to implement new information and communication technology (ICT) based applications. However, in spite of enormous investment in health information systems (HIS), no convincing evidence of the overall benefits of HISs yet exists. The publishing of studies that capture the effects of the implementation and use of ICT-based applications in healthcare may contribute to the emergence of an evidence-based health informatics which can be used as a platform for decisions made by policy makers, executives, and clinicians. Health informatics needs further studies identifying the factors affecting successful HIS implementation and capturing the effects of HIS implementation. The purpose of the work presented in this thesis is to increase the available knowledge about the impact of the implementation and use of HISs in healthcare organizations. All the studies included in this thesis used qualitative research methods. A case study design and literature review were performed to collect data.

This thesis’s results highlight an increasing need to share knowledge, find methods to evaluate the impact of investments, and formulate indicators for success. It makes suggestions for developing or extending evaluation methods that can be applied to this area with a multi-actor perspective in order to understand the effects, consequences, and prerequisites that have to be achieved for the successful implementation and use of IT in healthcare. The results also propose that HIS, particularly integrated computer-based patient records (ICPR), be introduced to fulfill a high number of organizational, individualbased, and socio-technical goals at different levels. It is therefore necessary to link the goals that HIS systems are to fulfill in relation to short-term, middle-term, and long-term strategic goals. Another suggestion is that implementers and vendors should direct more attention to what has been published in the area to avoid future failures.

This thesis’s findings outline an updated structure for implementation planning. When implementing HISs in hospital and primary-care environments, this thesis suggests that such strategic actions as management involvement and resource allocation, such tactical action as integrating HIS with healthcare workflow, and such operational actions as user involvement, establishing compatibility between software and hardware, and education and training should be taken into consideration.

Optical coherence tomography is an imaging modality with an outstanding resolution. During the project, a time domain OCT system based on a Michelson fibre interferometer was implemented and put into operation. A super-luminescent diode with a centre wavelength of 1295nm and a bandwidth of 45nm was selected as light source and a linear variable delay line as reference. Basic tests were made on phantoms constructed of filter foils and on gel-like agar slices with optical properties similar to human tissue. It was shown that the achievable resolution was at least 36um and can be increased. The system can easily be enhanced to create two-dimensional images.

In this thesis, a very flexible framework for simulating RIS is designed to beused for Infobroker testing. Infobroker is an application developed by MawellSvenska AB that connects RIS and PACS to achieve interoperability by enablingimage and journal data transmission between radiology sites. To put the project in context, the field of medical informatics, RIS and PACS systems and common protocols and standards are explored. A proof-of-concept implementation of the proposed design shows its potential and verifies that it works. The thesis concludes that a more specialized approach is preferred.

This thesis looks at two sides of the same coin: how to support the production and future development at a specialist medical technology department at Danderyd Hospital. The two sides are; a pilot study of a product management system (PDM) and an interview based study on the characteristics of the silent knowledge of the technicians. The department (National respiratory centre, NRC) is facing retirement of several key employees.

The technical study shows that the success of an implementation is largely dependent on the users’ prior knowledge and use of a 3D Computer aided design system (CAD).The system itself is shown to fulfill the Lifecycle requirement of tracking the products (mostly tracheostomy tubes) but without a CAD centered workflow, some substantial education and preferably some new recruits, an implementation of the PDM system will fail. The author recommends development of the current “low-tech” system of MS Excel and Access rather than redistribute the dependency from technician towards a complex, commercial software and its vendor.

The analysis of the technicians’ silent knowledge with the newly developed method, epithet for silent knowledge (ETK), shows that the longer employment time:

  • the more differentiated technicians become in describing their work,
  • practical knowledge are regarded higher and

Study Habits and Their Effects with the Academic Performance of Bachelor of Science in Radiologic Technology Students

This study aimed at investigating the effects of students' study habits on their academic performance in professional and general education subjects. To attain this aim, the researcher used a sample of thirty-two (32) students from the Bachelor of Science in Radiologic Technology program under the College of Allied Medical Sciences for the academic year 2019–2020 of a university in Bulacan. The researcher used the descriptive-correlational method of research, which utilized a standardized questionnaire as the primary data gathering technique. Results of the regression analysis indicate that all eight (8) variables of study habits are correlated with academic performance (professional subjects and general education subjects) of the students to a varying extent, as shown by the non-zero B coefficients. The results of the analysis of variance of the regression of study habits on the academic performance of the students revealed an F ratio of 0.939 and 0.900 with an associate probability equal to 0.505 and 0.533, respectively. Since the p-values are greater than alpha, the null hypothesis (Ho) cannot be rejected. It may be safely concluded that the study habits of the students did not produce significant combined effects on the academic performance of the students. Conclusions were drawn, and recommendations were offered.

New solutions for automated image recognition and identification: challenges to radiologic technology and forensic pathology

Predictors of success on the credentialing examination in radiography for first- and non-first-generation students.

Background: Identifying predictors of student success is fundamental across higher education in the United States, particularly for historically underserved first-generation students. In radiologic technology programs, the literature suggests that variables prior to and during matriculation in these programs affects scores on the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) credentialing examination in Radiography. However, the evidence in this area has not considered the educational patterns for first-generation students. Purpose: This study sought to improve our understanding about how select student background characteristics and experiences prior to and during the years enrolled in radiologic technology programs accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) affect scores on the ARRT credentialing examination in radiography, especially for first-generation students. Method: The researchers surveyed graduates from radiologic technology programs in 2018 and 2019 who attempted the radiography credentialing examination in these two years. Results: A total of 286 cases were included in the analysis, which revealed different patterns and effects of predictor variables on credentialing examination scores for first- and non-first-generation students. Whereas 10 variables prior to and during matriculation affected examination scores for first-generation students, only 8 did for their non-first-generation peers. Conclusion: Identifying predictors of success in radiologic technology programs helps professionals in these programs design environments that provide opportunities for students to enhance their chances to be successful on the Radiography exam, especially first-generation students.

Radiologic Technology Clinical Manual

A framework for predicting radiologic physics achievement among radiologic technology students.

Radiologic Physics is one of the most challenging professional subjects in the Radiologic Technology (RT) field. It encompasses a wide range of physics concept, calculations, and real-life imaging practices. As observed, most of the students failed in this subject, leading to students dropping out early in the course. To circumvent this daunting issue, a framework for predicting the subject’s achievement should be developed using various tenets of learning strategies and management. This study aims to explore a framework that can predict Radiologic Physics achievement among RT students. Subjects were 954 Radiologic Physics students (480 males and 474 females) randomly selected from 12 Radiologic Technology schools in the Philippines. Their ages ranged from 18 to 22 years (mean age 19.5, SD 2.4). Seven instruments were used to collect data for the study: Physics Learning Strategies Scale, Inventory of Students Attitude Towards Radiologic Physics; Class Involvement Scale; Teacher-Directed Activities Scale; Parental Influence towards Academic Success Scale, and Radiologic Physics Achievement Test. Path analysis was utilized to identify the best fitting framework. The best fitting framework explained 92% of Radiologic Physics achievement variance. Cognitive and metacognitive learning strategies, attitudes towards Radiologic Physics, class involvement, teacher-directed activities, and parental influence exerted a positive effect on Radiologic Physics achievement. Teacher-directed activities, parental influence, and attitudes towards the subject had a positive impact towards cognitive learning strategies. Moreover, teacher-directed activities and parental influence exerted a positive effect on class involvement while parental influence had a positive impact on metacognitive learning strategies. Teacher-direct activities, attitudes towards the subject, and parental influence contributed indirectly to achievement via cognitive learning strategies. Teacher-directed activities contributed indirectly to achievement via class involvement. Finally, parental influence contributed indirectly to achievement via metacognitive learning strategies and class involvement. A framework for predicting Radiologic Physics achievement among RT students could be used to understand the performance of students and innovate learning strategies in the RT education.

Structural Models of Self-Efficacy of Filipino Radiologic Technology Educators, Current Learners, and Prospective Students in the Senior High School

This study aims to explore three different structural models of self-efficacy for Filipino Radiologic Technology educators, current learners, and prospective students in the senior high school. Subjects were 256 Radiologic Technology educators (102 males and 154 females) and 2,451 Radiologic Technology students (1,525 males and 926 females), randomly selected from 22 Radiologic Technology schools in the Philippines. A total of 4,263 prospective Radiologic Technology students from the 30 senior high schools in the Philippines were also sampled as respondents. Six instruments were used to measure help-seeking, self-esteem, social support, motivation, self-regulation, and self-efficacy. Path analysis was utilized to identify the best fitting model. The best fit models of self-efficacy for Filipino Radiologic Technology educators and learners showed that help-seeking, self-esteem, social support, motivation, and self-regulation positively influenced self-efficacy, with social support exerting the greatest causal effect. The best fit model of self-efficacy for prospective Radiologic Technology students from senior high school reported that social support completely mediates the effects of help-seeking, self-esteem, motivation, and self-regulation on self-efficacy. The study highlights different results that could be arrived depending on whether future researchers decide to use the self-efficacy models for Filipino Radiologic Technology educators, current learners, and prospective students in the senior high school. The provision of highly supportive environment for Radiologic Technology educators, current learners, and prospective students in the senior high school is essential to increase self-efficacy, thereby improving their capabilities to hurdle the challenges in the academic milieu.

National Radiologic Technology Licensure Examination Performance: Predicting Success using Discriminant Analysis

This study was designed to identify variables that might be used as predictors for success on the national Radiologic Technology licensure examination. The census sample consisted of 2,036 graduates of a baccalaureate Radiologic Technology program in 2016, 2017, and 2018 from 24 higher education institutions (HEIs) in the Philippines. The investigators examined 12 variables to determine their predictive value for the national Radiologic Technology licensure examination success. Grades in all year levels of Radiologic Technology course were the four best predictors. Results of the discriminant analysis identified seven significant predictor variables leading to successful classification of 99.9 percent of all the passing graduates and 99.8 percent of the failing graduates in the national Radiologic Technology licensure examination. The use of this discriminant function to identify high-risk students has the advantage of early identification of failing. The large amount of 92 percent variance in the national RT licensure examination accounted for in this study may substantiate the claim of high accuracy of the discriminant function used. This is the first study to discriminate passing from failing graduates in the national RT licensure examination based on the selected predictor variables and the astounding precision of classifying graduates is a remarkable result for HEIs included in the analysis.

Adjustment to college and academic performance: Insights from Filipino college freshmen in an allied health science course

This paper aims to know the relationship between the level of adjustment to college and academic performance of first year Radiologic Technology students of a higher education institution in the Philippines. A descriptive-correlational study using survey questionnaire was employed to 132 respondents who were chosen through stratified random sampling and Slovin’s formula. In such a complex and broad field as medicine, writing an original and compelling research paper is a daunting task. From investigating public care concerns to cancer treatment studies, each student decides where his interests lie. Our goal is to help students find new angles to study and focus on relevant topics. With our resources, you can write an engaging and rigorous paper.

How to Choose Medical Research Paper Topics

Choosing good research paper topics is often more challenging than the writing process itself. You need to select a captivating subject matter that will grab the reader’s attention, showcase your knowledge of a specific field, help you progress in your studies, and perhaps even inspire future research.

To accomplish that, you need to start with brainstorming, followed by thorough research. Here are some great tips to follow:

  • Pick an interesting topic – The key is to pick something that you find interesting, and yet make sure it’s not too general or too narrow. It should allow you to delve deep into the subject matter and show that you’re a professional who is ready to take on a challenge when it comes to your chosen field of medicine.
  • Narrow down your focus – Once you have a list of potential topics, sift through recent medical research papers to get up-to-date with the latest trends, developments, and issues in medicine and healthcare. Check out textbooks, news articles, and other relevant sources for more information related to your potential topics. If a particular condition or disease interests you (perhaps something that drew you to a career in medicine), there’s your cue for narrowing down your topic.
  • Pinpoint the “why,” “how,” and “what” – Whether you are looking into nutrition research paper topics , controversial medical topics, nursing research topics, or anything in-between, ask yourself why each of them is important. How could they contribute to the available medical studies, if any? What new information could they bring to improve the future of medicine? Asking these questions will help you pick the right medical research paper topic that suits you and helps you move forward and reach your aspirations.

To help you on that quest, we’ve compiled a list of topics that you could use or that might inspire you to come up with something unique. Let’s dive in.

Thesis Title Sample for Medical Technology Students Dissertation & Thesis Writing Service & Help

In today’s world, medical technologies are developing more. There is always a new way to treat disease and there is always an innovative way to cure or prevent illness. Thesis titles that feature a catchy subject or a clever phrase can help make your document easier to read and understand.

Thesis titles can be written as a sample for thesis subjects or as a title for your document. It can serve as a guide, or as a starting point. It is a short piece of writing that is written to describe the topic of the document and to provide some information about it. It is intended to be used in the context of a longer written document, but should not be confused with it.

Thesis titles are useful tools in helping you find ideas for a medical technology project or dissertation. They can be used for your own thesis writing or as a starting point for a dissertation. Thesis titles can also be used as a title for a sample medical thesis. It is often included with a thesis and is helpful for students who are interested in writing their own thesis.

When using a thesis title sample as a title for your thesis, make sure that you use the words that are best describing the topic that you are writing about. Your title is not the main point of the paper, and it is not the entire dissertation. If the information that you are giving is very technical or complicated, you may want to use another name for it, such as the body of the text. It will make your document easier to read and understand if the title you choose does not sound as if you are trying to ramble.

Thesis titles should include the name of the author and the date that the thesis was submitted, along with the title of the thesis and any associated references. These details are needed for your thesis to be accepted and the committee on which it was written will be able to recognize it easily if it is submitted for review.

You do not have to stick to one title when you are looking for a sample title for a thesis. You may use more than one, but be careful that the one that you choose does not become too long and boring, so that you do not lose your reader’s interest quickly.

A thesis title sample can be a great way to come up with titles for your thesis. It is a fun way to get your ideas across and will also help your readers understand what it is about. A title is a great starting point, but it should not be your only piece of information in the document.

Using a thesis title sample as a title for your thesis will help you come up with titles that are easy to comprehend and that are not too complex for those who are reading it for the first time. Even if you think you have a very good idea, it may be best to consider a different title for your thesis instead of simply choosing the one that looks good.

Once you have chosen a title, you should read the sample carefully. and note down the words that are included. You should also try to see if there is anything that is grammatically incorrect or not making sense. to you.

After you have reviewed the sample, you can then begin your research. finding other samples and researching the people who created these samples. For example, some examples of a sample title for a medical science thesis are “Probiotics, bacteria and antibiotics ,” “Cellular communication,” or “A simple study of living cells.”
