What colour is PhD graduation gown?

In Australia, the colour of the PhD graduation gown typically depends on the university and the faculty you are graduating from, but it is typically a black stuff gown with colourful facings and sometimes colourful satin trim around the sleeves. Universities such as Deakin University , Federation University and Flinders University wear gowns of blue fabric with red facings. Charles Darwin University has a Doctoral gown that is claret coloured and faced with cream satin, with sleeves that are also lined with the same cream satin. Because of this variation, we recommend that you check with your university to confirm the exact color of the PhD gown required. Some universities may have a specific color that corresponds to the faculty or discipline, so again, it's best to contact your institution to make sure you wear the appropriate gown on graduation day.

What do you wear to a PhD graduation?

A doctoral PhD gown is usually worn together with a PhD hat (bonnet) and a PhD hood. When wearing a PhD gown, formal dress is typically worn underneath. Traditionally, this would include:

  • A white dress shirt or blouse
  • Black dress pants or skirt for women
  • Black dress shoes and socks
  • For men, a black suit jacket, blazer or formal jacket may be worn under the gown if desired. For women, a black suit jacket, cardigan, or blazer is usually worn.
  • To preserve the drape of the fabric we recommend not wearing bulky clothing under your gown

It is important to note that some universities may have a dress code for graduation ceremonies, so it is always best to check with your university for their specific guidelines on attire well in advance of your graduation.

Difference between American and Australian Doctoral gowns

American Doctoral robes are generally zippered at the front (the same as for bachelor and master’s gowns) and feature velvet facings, and usually three velvet bands on the sleeves. They tend to be made of black fabric, although some universities use their school colours. They also have shorter sleeved that feature an elastic around the cuff and they may also have embroidery on the facings of the gown. Many US universities have now done away with the hood that accompanies the gown, however, graduates are still entitled to wear a hood once the degree is conferred.

Australian PhD gowns follow the UK gowning tradition and as such often resemble a masters gown (with it’s long, closed crescent sleeves) with colourful facings running gown the front of the gown. These facings can be either made from the same fabric as the gown itself or are made from satin. Some universities, such as Edith Cowan University and Victoria University , have gowns that are closer in style to a bachelor gown but with colourful satin trim along the bottom of the sleeves.

Academic dress photo gallery

Below you can find examples of academic dress for each faculty at UTS.

For all coursework and Masters by Research graduates, academic dress is comprised of a black gown, a hood in the colour of the faculty at the level of the award, and a trencher (cap). Graduation ceremonies are formal occasions so it’s important to wear appropriate clothing. When choosing what to wear it might be helpful to consider that academic gowns are quite heavy and can be very warm. When wearing academic dress, the hood should hang evenly from the shoulders. The trencher is worn straight on the head with the tassel hanging over the right side. The trencher is worn throughout the ceremony except during the national anthem.

PhD graduates wear a red gown with white satin facing and a black velvet soft bonnet with gold cord and tassel. The bonnet (cap) is worn straight on the head with the tassel hanging over the right side.

Arts and Social Sciences

Engineering and information technology,   information technology , phd academic dress for all faculties.

In Europe, education was the preserve of the monasteries until the twelfth century; academic gowns have their origins in the lay costumes of that time. Festal gowns worn by the Chancellor, Deputy Chancellor, Pro-Chancellors and Vice-Chancellor are based on the traditional British gowns from these offices, but contain Australian features such as the embroidery depicting Sydney wattle. The trencher grew out of the pileus or hat worn at Oxford and Cambridge universities around the seventeenth century. The design of the academic dress worn by UTS graduates is unique to the University, with the lining of the hoods featuring different colours for each faculty. The number and colour of the bands on the edge of the lining designate the level of the award. Recipients of some undergraduate and associate diplomas may also wear a sash.

UTS acknowledges the Gadigal people of the Eora Nation, the Boorooberongal people of the Dharug Nation, the Bidiagal people and the Gamaygal people, upon whose ancestral lands our university stands. We would also like to pay respect to the Elders both past and present, acknowledging them as the traditional custodians of knowledge for these lands.

Diplomas withheld from 4 University of Chicago students following pro-Palestine encampment

The four students on friday were supported by two professors who believe the decision is inconsistent with free speech values., by natalie martinez • published may 31, 2024 • updated on june 1, 2024 at 1:12 am.

Four students who are slated to graduate from the University of Chicago on Saturday will have their diplomas withheld pending disciplinary proceedings stemming from a pro-Palestine protest on campus.

Hours before commencement, the stage was set and many seniors were already donning their caps and gowns, preparing to accept their diplomas. But some students who participated in a pro-Palestinian encampment on campus amid the war in Gaza - won't get their degrees when everyone else does.

Watch NBC 5 Chicago news stream free, 24/7, wherever you are

"The only thing that differentiates me from my peers and friends that will be receiving their degrees tomorrow, is that I talked about Palestine," said Youssef Hasweh, a Palestinian student whose degree is being withheld.

On Friday, the students were supported by two professors who believe the decision is inconsistent with free speech values.

"They can walk the stage, but it will be a charade," said Genevieve Lakier, a University of Chicago law professor who specializes in freedom of speech and American constitutional law. "In fact, they will not be receiving their degree the four years of hard work. And they will not be doing so because they participating in a non-violent student protest, demanding peace."

Almost one-third of the Chicago City Council sent a message to the university's president and provost in support of the students, asking the administrators to allow them to graduate, said Denis Hirschfeldt, a math professor at the University of Chicago and member of the American Association of University Professors.

The 16 aldermen who signed off on that letter said they’re concerned about repression of free expression and that they believe withholding the graduates' diplomas amounted to unjustified punitive action.

Family pushes for justice after girl, 5, shot and killed

The university explained in a statement, in part: When such complaints are referred to the Disciplinary Committee, “degrees may be withheld until the case is resolved in order to allow a complete process. However, as with many situations, for example when certain degree requirements are still being completed, students may participate in Convocation.”

Among this weekend’s graduates on campus was Max Parness, who was heading to the campus Jewish center with his family on Friday night.

"To me it seems consistent. I don’t think it’s vindictive," he said. "The quad was occupied for 10 to 11 days and then just a couple weeks ago, the other side of street had a similar occupation on Friday."

He’s among many on campus, hoping to put politics aside for their one big day.

Yinam Cohen, Consul General of Israel to the Midwest, told NBC Chicago, "The University of Chicago was correct to take a stand against Jew hatred.”

The university, in its statement, said, "It is essential that its "well-defined, faculty-led  Disciplinary System for Disruptive Conduct " is followed consistently to afford due process to both complainants and respondents.

"The four of us having our degrees withheld are being robbed of an 18-year journey in academia ending," Hasweh said.

The university's complete statement can be found below:

The recent protests on campus brought about multiple formal complaints alleging that students violated University  policies , including by engaging in disruptive conduct. Members of the University community may have questions about how the process works in such cases.

The University adheres to a well-defined, faculty-led  Disciplinary System for Disruptive Conduct  that was developed and approved by the Council of the University Senate in 2017. It is essential that this process is followed consistently to afford due process to both complainants and respondents.

Once a formal complaint is received and, if the Disciplinary Committee faculty lead concurs that the complaint is credible, the matter may be referred to the Standing Disciplinary Committee on Disruptive Conduct to determine if policies have been violated. These processes do not involve University leaders, including the President or Provost.

When such complaints are referred to the Disciplinary Committee, degrees may be withheld until the case is resolved in order to allow a complete process. However, as with many situations, for example when certain degree requirements are still being completed, students may participate in Convocation. Degrees can be conferred expeditiously, depending upon the resolution.

The faculty and staff members who serve in established roles in this process perform an important service to the campus community. They act to ensure the consistency, fairness, and fidelity of the University’s procedures, and it is important that these matters proceed accordingly.

Due to popular demand, our website now caters for international orders.

Refer to the tabs below for information regarding gown sizing, headwear sizing, our fabric types and garment care advice.

Our family have been making regalia for 75 years. Thank-you for supporting Australian made.

We look forward to being of service!

Gown sizing is determined by your height (floor to top of head). If you are in-between sizes, we recommend the larger size. Gowns are worn open at the front and are very loose-fitting, so don't worry about the waistline - just go by your height!

sydney uni phd gown

Head size is head circumference taken above the eyebrows and ears. Use a tape measure.

sydney uni phd gown

*Soft cap mortar boards are slightly elasticised with a little room between sizes. If you are in-between sizes, we recommend the larger size. ie: if you measure 57.5cms, choose a size large.  Head sizing can be tricky. You are welcome to exchange size within 7 days of receiving.

We use Australia Post for domestic orders and DHL express for international orders. The charges below include shipping and handling $AUD.

Prices may be subject to change without notice.

Domestic shipping: refer to Australia post for delivery time estimates. Australia post no longer guarantee delivery time frames. Use the tracking number provided to track your parcel on the Australia post website. If there is reason to believe your parcel has gone missing, contact us for assistance. Do not assume that selecting express post means your order will be dispatched within a few days. A lot of our regalia is made to order. Refer lead time tab.

International shipping: international freight is expensive however we only use DHL express for reliability, speed and security. Additional freight charges may apply if your order is unusually large. We will contact you if additional freight charges may apply. Our international freight charges do not include any duties or taxes at your end.

If you would like your regalia for a particular ceremony date, contact us to ask about availability.

Please be aware that most regalia is bespoke and tailor made. We have a made-to-order, small-batch production cycle.

We aim to fulfil all orders within a reasonable time frame, however lead times can be situational, seasonal and will vary depending on our production schedule.

Please do not assume that by selecting express post that your order will be dispatched within a few days. We are not a pick-and-pack warehouse.

Please do not assume that we know you want your regalia in time for a ceremony, that we know the date of your ceremony, or that you will receive your regalia in time for your ceremony (refer points below). We recommend having a contingency plan; hire or borrow regalia from a friend, a colleague or your institution.

We cannot control shipping time once a parcel leaves our premises (see shipping tab).

Some things that are out of our control may delay production. We take all steps necessary to avoid delays but materials and deliveries delay, staff shortages, machine malfunctions, and natural disasters are out of our control.

Putting pressure on our staff will not make your order be processed more quickly. We do not tolerate unreasonable, impatient or aggressive behaviour.

We thank you for your patience and understanding as our production team work hard to try to meet everyone's requirements.

Participating in a University ceremony where your award will be conferred?

The following information applies to customers who want to purchase their regalia to wear at a university ceremony where the award relevant to this regalia is being conferred. Please see this page  https://www.ghlilley.com.au/pages/university-ceremony

Be sure to follow the laundering instructions on the care label of your garment.

Our garments come to you pressed and ready-to-wear with minimal creasing from freight. However, we do recommend hanging your garment when not in use and if required, gently iron or steam your robe. (Do not put an iron directly onto any satin lining or facing!)

Every George H Lilley Regalia gown comes with a complimentry robe bag. We recommend using this bag for storeage and travel. Allowing your garment to air regularly will assist to keep your gown in best condition.

Particular care is required if your garment has satin linings or facings. In this case, we recommend that your academic regalia is worn in ceremonies only. Avoid eating or drinking while wearing your regalia as the satin may stain. Take care when handling as pinning or your fingernails could damage the fabric.

If at any time you are not sure on the best of care for your garment then please contact us, the manufacturer, for advice.

University of Sydney Climate Research Forum

As one of the grand challenges named in the University of Sydney’s 2032 Strategy , tackling the climate crisis is a key research focus for the University. Academic institutions, as thought-leaders in innovation and creativity, will be most effective when we coordinate multidisciplinary research to address the complexities of achieving a just and sustainable future in a climate changed world.

The Office of Global and Research Engagement is supporting a project to map and better coordinate climate research at the University of Sydney. Drawing on what we have learned from this mapping exercise, the Climate Research Forum will bring together researchers working on climate change across the University to create a multidisciplinary research community and inspire new ways of understanding and solving complex climate challenges.

The Forum will bring together researchers from across the University working on climate to:

  • provide clarity about the University’s climate research ecosystem and the current climate-focused research support structures;
  • identify climate research strengths of the University;
  • build new multidisciplinary research collaborations.

This event is for University of Sydney staff and PhD students only.

In addition to the Forum, the broader coordination project has (1) developed a database to capture the climate research taking place across the University, which is soon to be released and (2) established the Climate Leaders Network which brings together representatives from ten key climate-focused research support structures across the University ranging from Multidisciplinary Initiatives to Faculty Centres and Networks.
