The future of ChatGPT in academic research and publishing: A commentary for clinical and translational medicine

ChatGPT, an artificial intelligence (AI)‐powered chatbot developed by OpenAI, is creating a buzz across all occupational sectors. Its name comes from its basis in the Generative Pretrained Transformer (GPT) language model. ChatGPT's most promising feature is its ability to offer human‐like responses to text input using deep learning techniques at a level far superior to any other AI model. Its rapid integration in various industries signals the public's burgeoning reliance on AI technology. Thus, it is essential to critically evaluate ChatGPT's potential impacts on academic clinical and translational medicine research.

1. ChatGPT'S INTRODUCTION TO MEDICAL RESEARCH

ChatGPT contains 175 billion parameters, making it one of the largest and most powerful models for AI processing available today—hence its growing use in different occupations. ChatGPT's responses are leaps and bounds above those from past AI programs, in no small part due to being more human‐like. ChatGPT has taken the business world by storm. It is easy to envision its expansion into clinical and translational medicine in the future. As such, experts must consider the potential effects of this technology in and beyond medical research.

ChatGPT has made its debut in the scientific literature through published papers and preprints. Although ChatGPT can undoubtedly benefit writers of all backgrounds, its limitations in medical research merit close attention. 1 The emerging use of ChatGPT has sparked an upheaval in the scientific community and ignited debates around the ethics of using AI to write scientific publications that can influence the decisions of physicians, researchers, and policymakers.

2. THE FACTUAL INACCURACIES OF ChatGPT

The most significant disadvantage of ChatGPT is that the information it compiles is not always accurate. This drawback is especially detrimental in academic publishing; after all, progress depends on sharing appropriate information. Presenting incorrect data in a scientific setting carries a great risk of harm. For example, research influences how personal and community health concerns are treated and managed.

The data which ChatGPT uses provide information from 2021 and earlier. The chatbot does not currently consider information reported in 2022 onward. 2 For a field that is driven by recent advances to boost knowledge, enhance interventions, and formulate evidence‐based policies, this year‐long (and growing) information gap is a stark hindrance. If scholars use ChatGPT to create content, attempting to publish papers that contain false or outdated information will tarnish authors’ credibility among colleagues and peers.

3. ChatGPT: NOT SO EASY TO DETECT

A double‐edged sword with ChatGPT is the ability—or more accurately, the inability—of scholars to detect when other professionals have used it. Researchers at Northwestern University asked ChatGPT to write 50 medical‐research abstracts based on a set of articles published in medical journals. The authors then asked a group of medical researchers to spot the fabricated abstracts. 3 Problematic results emerged, with human reviewers able to correctly identify only 68% of the ChatGPT‐produced abstracts and 86% of the genuine abstracts. These findings confirm ChatGPT writes believable (albeit potentially inaccurate) scientific abstracts.

The results of this study bode well for those interested in employing ChatGPT to facilitate the writing process, as people reading their work likely will not realize it was AI‐generated. However, this possibility raises several concerns. Being unable to identify valid information comes with consequences. Scientists may follow flawed investigation routes, which translate into wasted research dollars and misleading results. For policymakers, the inability to detect false research may ground policy decisions in incorrect information that could have monumental effects on society.

Due to these implications, the future of academic and scientific publishing may soon hold policies that forbid AI‐generated content. Those who use ChatGPT in any capacity will need to be aware of these mandates. The 40th International Conference on Machine Learning already banned papers written by AI tools, including ChatGPT. 4 The Science family of journals is also updating their license and Editorial Policies to specify that they will not allow ChatGPT‐produced text. They explained their stance in an editorial, stating that most cases of scientific misconduct arise from inadequate human attention, and permitting ChatGPT‐generated content significantly increases this risk. 5

4. AN AIDE FOR SCIENTIFIC INNOVATION

Not all ChatGPT‐related matters have elicited concern within the scientific research field. A February 2023 article in Nature described computational biologists’ use of ChatGPT to improve completed research papers. In just five minutes, the biologists received a review of their manuscript that increased readability and spotted equation‐based mistakes. During a trial with three manuscripts, the team's use of ChatGPT was not always smooth, but the final output returned better‐edited manuscripts. 6

Using ChatGPT for this purpose bypasses the scientific community's primary concerns surrounding AI and its use of inaccurate or outdated information. Because computational biologists initially wrote the manuscripts, the information was already accurate and up to date. ChatGPT can help increase researchers’ productivity and content quality. If scientists can spend less time editing their work, they can devote more time to advancing the field of medicine.

Considering these benefits, ChatGPT can prove invaluable for researchers looking to verify answers or identify problems in their work. It is important to remember that, as of now, ChatGPT is not sufficiently trained on specialized content to be able to fact‐check technical topics. 7

5. ChatGPT IN SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH AND PUBLISHING: THE PROS AND CONS

Experts anticipate that the technology and programs integrating ChatGPT will serve as precursors to more advanced AI systems. In the meantime, this chatbot can play a supportive role in academic and scientific publishing, primarily for editing. Even so, those who use ChatGPT must be aware of its limitations.

As it stands, ChatGPT cannot be relied upon to provide correct facts or produce reliable references, as stated by a January editorial in Nature Machine Intelligence . 8 Accepting the limitations of ChatGPT and using it only for certain tasks allows researchers to delegate tedious jobs, such as manuscript editing, to the AI model while avoiding catastrophes such as the publication of false information.

As ChatGPT becomes more commonplace, it will be crucial to calibrate expectations about its capabilities and acknowledge that it cannot take on every job. Especially in the academic research field, any tasks in need of specialized subject knowledge or innovative ideas and opinions still require a genuine human touch that cannot be replaced by AI.

6. ChatGPT AND CLINICAL AND TRANSLATIONAL MEDICINE

Our conclusions regarding ChatGPT and its applications in scientific research focus on a high‐impact journal– Clinical and Translational Medicine –that aims to promote, accelerate, and translate preclinical research for clinical applications. This journal highlights the importance of clinical and translational medicine research in the name of promoting the safety and efficacy of discoveries that proceed to human trials, reflecting the notion of ‘bench to bedside.’ 9 Implementing ChatGPT in its present iteration must be pursued with extreme caution given the tool's evolving limitations and capabilities when it comes to providing reliable information. Can AI replace human input? We concur with H. Holden Thorp's position 5 on ChatGPT in that “ChatGPT is fun, but not an author” (p. 313). Scientists might be able to use well‐developed AI tools to increase work efficiency for tasks such as proofreading and manuscript checks. In the future, AI‐based tools may become recognized for their contributions to broader areas of scientific research, depending on their abilities to support human input. The boundaries between research ethics and the moral use of AI in health research 10 need to be further explored to establish guidelines. All researchers and contributors must understand what AI can and cannot do. Therefore, editors and editorial board members should continue monitoring ChatGPT's applications in academic research to draft journal policies that inform contributors of best practices. Doing so will ensure that Clinical and Translational Medicine can maintain an image of integrity by publishing timely and accurate research that makes meaningful contributions. After all, research excellence is gauged by ethics and integrity.

A pair of scientists has produced a research paper in less than an hour with the help of ChatGPT — a tool driven by artificial intelligence (AI) that can understand and generate human-like text. The article was fluent, insightful and presented in the expected structure for a scientific paper, but researchers say that there are many hurdles to overcome before the tool can be truly helpful.

If you need ChatGPT to help summarize an article or research paper, find the body of text online and keep it open in a separate tab.

In the chat box, type in TLDR: followed by the title of the book you want summarized. TLDR stands for too long, didn't read.

You can also ask ChatGPT: "Summarize [book title]." 

You cannot paste a URL into ChatGPT. If you do so, you'll get a response explaining that the chatbot cannot access websites. If you want ChatGPT to summarize research, you'll need a basic understanding of the topic to ensure you aren't including inaccurate information in your report.

For example, if you're writing a paper about how twin sibling dynamics affect their marriages, you can ask ChatGPT: "Explain how twin relationships affect their marriages."

If you're having trouble comprehending specific passages in an article, book, or research paper, you can copy parts of the text and paste them into ChatGPT.

What are ChatGPT's limitations?

If you're using ChatGPT to summarize an article, book, or piece of research, keep in mind that ChatGPT isn't aware of events that occurred after September 2021.

ChatGPT is a large language model that uses queues and millions of data points to mimic human responses. This form of mimicry is why ChatGPT will answer questions even when it doesn't output the correct answer. So, make sure you're not using any information from ChatGPT without fact-checking it.

If you try to get around this obstacle and provide ChatGPT with an article that contains information post-2021, it might hallucinate. Here, I asked the chatbot to summarize an article about a new app I wrote about , and it made up a few details. 

Lemon8 is a new app from TikTok's parent company, ByteDance. Although the TikTok trend may exist, that's not what the article is about.

Can ChatGPT summarize a PDF?

Copying and pasting a URL into ChatGPT won't yield you the best results. If there is a specific paragraph or sentence you're struggling with, you can copy and paste it into ChatGPT and ask it to explain it to you. Still, it's best to read the PDF and use the chatbot as a summary tool and not as an educator.

ChatGPT in Higher Education: Facts and Ideas to Consider

Introduction

It is safe to say that by now, you have seen many articles/posts, opinions, and stories about ChatGPT—and the larger AI-Language Learning Models (LLMs)—in relation to higher education and teaching/learning in particular. These writings included several perspectives ranging from raising concerns to celebrating new opportunities and a mix of the former and the latter. Also, these writings continue to evolve and grow rapidly in number as new AI-powered LLMs continue to emerge and evolve (e.g., Google’s new AI LLMs: Bard ).

The intent of this piece is not to add another article sharing tips or concerns about ChatGPT. That being said, this article (1) summarizes the major concerns about ChatGPT and (2) the ideas about its positive implications based on what it is published to date.

Concerns about ChatGPT

Faculty, scholars, and higher education leaders have raised several concerns about ChatGPT. These concerns stem from possible ways it can be used.

• Using ChatGPT to cheat by asking it to write essays/answer open-ended questions in exams/discussion forums and homework assignments (December 19th, 2022 NPR Story ) (December 6th, 2022 Atlantic Story ) (January 16 New York Times Story ).
• Using ChatGPT to author scholarly works which conflict with the ethical standards of scientific inquiry. Several high-impact/profile journals have already formulated principles to guide authors on how to use LLMs AI tools and why it is not allowed to credit such tool as an author—any attribution of authorship carries with it accountability for the scholarly work, and no AI tool can take such responsibility (January 24th, 2023 Nature Editorial ).
• ChatGPT can threaten the privacy of students/faculty (and any other user). Its privacy policy states that data can be shared with third-party vendors, law enforcement, affiliates, and other users. Also, while one can delete their ChatGPT account, the prompts they entered into ChatGPT cannot be deleted. This setup threatens sensitive or controversial topics as this data cannot be removed (January 2023 Publication by Dr. Torrey Trust ).
• ChatGPT is not always trustworthy, as it can fabricate quotes and references. In an experiment conducted by Dr. Daniel Hickey at Indiana University Bloomington, Instructional Systems Technology department, “ ChatGPT was able to write a marginally acceptable literature review paper, but fabricated some quotes and references. With more work such as including paper abstracts in the prompts, GPT is scarily good at referencing research literature, perhaps as well as a first-year graduate student.” (January 6th, 2023, Article by Dr. Daniel Hickey )

Excitement about ChatGPT

At the other end of the spectrum, there have been several ideas that express interest and excitement about ChatGPT in higher education. These ideas stem from how they can be used ethically and in a controlled manner.

• Using ChatGPT to speed up the writing of drafts for several outlets (reports, abstracts, emails, conference proposals, press releases, recommendation letters, etc.) ChatGPT can produce elaborated writing that must be edited to remove any possible inconsistencies or inaccuracies (December 7th, 2022 Social Science Space story )
• Using ChatGPT in the process of brainstorming ideas for curriculum design, lesson planning, and learning activities. The tool can provide some novel ideas or remind educators of some instructional techniques and strategies that they had heard about in the past (January 23rd, 2023, Article by Dr. David Wiley ).
• Using ChatGPT to provide students tutoring/scaffolds. The tool can act like a virtual tutor who does not simply give the answer to the student but rather scaffold them to reach the correct answers by themselves. (Sal Khan, founder/CEO of Khan Academy, Spring 2023 TED Talk )
• Teaching with ChatGPT to train students on using AI tools and models, provide opportunities to exercise critical thinking skills, and improve their technological literacy (January 12th New York Times story ).

Concluding Thoughts

There are major concerns about ChatGPT and the larger AI-powered Language Learning Models (LLMs) phenomenon. These concerns are legitimate and are opposed by notable ideas about the positive implications of AI-powered LLMs in higher education classrooms. As we aspire to make evidence-based educational and learning design decisions, one should carefully review the research that has been done on AI in relation to higher education up to this point and engage with the gaps as opportunities to expand knowledge and find new opportunities and risks.

Our University’s newly formed advisory committee on the applications of generative AI is a good example of how higher education institutions ought to recommend the use, evaluation, and development of emergent AI tools and services. Additionally, discussions about generative AI and its implications on education happening in public venues are necessary to strengthen the public-facing mission of the University, where input from educators, students, and members of the community is welcome.

OpenAI's blockbuster chatbot ChatGPT is getting a new update. 

On Monday, OpenAI unveiled GPT-4o for ChatGPT, a new version of the bot that can hold conversations with users in a very human tone. The new version of the chatbot will also have vision abilities.

The futuristic reveal quickly prompted jokes about parallels to the movie "Her," with some calling the chatbot's new voice " cringe ."

The move is a big step for the future of AI-powered virtual assistants, which tech companies have been racing to develop.

Since its release in 2022, hundreds of millions of people have experimented with the tool, which is already changing how the internet looks and feels to users.

Users have flocked to ChatGPT to improve their personal lives and boost productivity . Some workers have used the AI chatbot to develop code , write real estate listings , and create lesson plans, while others have made teaching the best ways to use ChatGPT a career all to itself.

ChatGPT offers dozens of plug-ins to those who subscribe to ChatGPT Plus subscription. An Expedia one can help you book a trip, while an OpenTable one will get nab you a dinner reservation. And last month, OpenAI launched Code Interpreter, a version of ChatGPT that can code and analyze data .

While the personal tone of conversations with an AI bot like ChatGPT can evoke the experience of chatting with a human, the technology, which runs on " large language model tools, " doesn't speak with sentience and doesn't "think" the way people do. 

That means that even though ChatGPT can explain quantum physics or write a poem on command, a full AI takeover isn't exactly imminent , according to experts.

"There's a saying that an infinite number of monkeys will eventually give you Shakespeare," said Matthew Sag, a law professor at Emory University who studies copyright implications for training and using large language models like ChatGPT.

"There's a large number of monkeys here, giving you things that are impressive — but there is intrinsically a difference between the way that humans produce language, and the way that large language models do it," he said. 

Chatbots like ChatGPT are powered by large amounts of data and computing techniques to make predictions to string words together in a meaningful way. They not only tap into a vast amount of vocabulary and information, but also understand words in context. This helps them mimic speech patterns while dispatching an encyclopedic knowledge. 

Other tech companies like Google and Meta have developed their own large language model tools, which use programs that take in human prompts and devise sophisticated responses.

Despite the AI's impressive capabilities, some have called out OpenAI's chatbot for spewing misinformation , stealing personal data for training purposes , and even encouraging students to cheat and plagiarize on their assignments. 

Some recent efforts to use chatbots for real-world services have proved troubling. In 2023, the mental health company Koko came under fire after its founder wrote about how the company used GPT-3 in an experiment to reply to users. 

Koko cofounder Rob Morris hastened to clarify on Twitter that users weren't speaking directly to a chatbot, but that AI was used to "help craft" responses.

OpenAI’s new GPT-4o lets people interact using voice or video in the same model

The company’s new free flagship “omnimodel” looks like a supercharged version of assistants like Siri or Alexa.

OpenAI just debuted GPT-4o, a new kind of AI model that you can communicate with in real time via live voice conversation, video streams from your phone, and text. The model is rolling out over the next few weeks and will be free for all users through both the GPT app and the web interface, according to the company. Users who subscribe to OpenAI’s paid tiers, which start at $20 per month, will be able to make more requests. 

OpenAI CTO Mira Murati led the live demonstration of the new release one day before Google is expected to unveil its own AI advancements at its flagship I/O conference on Tuesday, May 14. 

GPT-4 offered similar capabilities, giving users multiple ways to interact with OpenAI’s AI offerings. But it siloed them in separate models, leading to longer response times and presumably higher computing costs. GPT-4o has now merged those capabilities into a single model, which Murati called an “omnimodel.” That means faster responses and smoother transitions between tasks, she said.

The result, the company’s demonstration suggests, is a conversational assistant much in the vein of Siri or Alexa but capable of fielding much more complex prompts.

“We’re looking at the future of interaction between ourselves and the machines,” Murati said of the demo. “We think that GPT-4o is really shifting that paradigm into the future of collaboration, where this interaction becomes much more natural.”

Barret Zoph and Mark Chen, both researchers at OpenAI, walked through a number of applications for the new model. Most impressive was its facility with live conversation. You could interrupt the model during its responses, and it would stop, listen, and adjust course. 

OpenAI showed off the ability to change the model’s tone, too. Chen asked the model to read a bedtime story “about robots and love,” quickly jumping in to demand a more dramatic voice. The model got progressively more theatrical until Murati demanded that it pivot quickly to a convincing robot voice (which it excelled at). While there were predictably some short pauses during the conversation while the model reasoned through what to say next, it stood out as a remarkably naturally paced AI conversation. 

The model can reason through visual problems in real time as well. Using his phone, Zoph filmed himself writing an algebra equation (3 x + 1 = 4) on a sheet of paper, having GPT-4o follow along. He instructed it not to provide answers, but instead to guide him much as a teacher would.

“The first step is to get all the terms with x on one side,” the model said in a friendly tone. “So, what do you think we should do with that plus one?”

Like previous generations of GPT, GPT-4o will store records of users’ interactions with it, meaning the model “has a sense of continuity across all your conversations,” according to Murati. Other new highlights include live translation, the ability to search through your conversations with the model, and the power to look up information in real time. 

As is the nature of a live demo, there were hiccups and glitches. GPT-4o’s voice might jump in awkwardly during the conversation. It appeared to comment on one of the presenters’ outfits even though it wasn’t asked to. But it recovered well when the demonstrators told the model it had erred. It seems to be able to respond quickly and helpfully across several mediums that other models have not yet merged as effectively. 

Previously, many of OpenAI’s most powerful features, like reasoning through image and video, were behind a paywall. GPT-4o marks the first time they’ll be opened up to the wider public, though it’s not yet clear how many interactions you’ll be able to have with the model before being charged. OpenAI says paying subscribers will “continue to have up to five times the capacity limits of our free users.”
