What do you do when you know what type of essay you need to write but can’t think of a proper topic? Answer: Come to our Essay Topic Generator and let us create the kind of topics you need to get started.

Need to write a controversial essay? Select that type from the drop down menu and click on the Generate Topic button!

Need to write an argumentative essay? No problem—we’ve got that covered as well!

Need to write a compare and contrast essay but don’t know what to write it about? You’ve come to the right place. Let’s see how it works!

How to Use Essay Topic Generator

Our essay topic generator is simple to use. You start by selecting the type of essay you will be writing. Options include: controversial essay, persuasive essay, personal narrative, and many more.

Once you’ve selected the type of essay you want, just click on the big blue Generate Topics button. Your first result will give you a topic idea followed by a proposed Essay Title.

For example, let’s say you have to write a controversial essay but can’t think of a topic. Select controversial essay from the drop down bar, and click the blue button. The first result you receive might be a topic on gun control. Gun control is a controversial topic in America, right? See how simple it is?

Well, say you don’t want to write on gun control—no problem. Hit that blue button again. You’ll get another result—maybe abortion as a topic. Abortion is a super controversial topic and would be a great subject for a controversial essay. But maybe you don’t want to write on that either. So smash that button again! We have hundreds of topic ideas and we’re sure you’ll find one that strikes your fancy.

Choose Your Essay Type

Essay topics.

Okay—so what? You’ve got a topic. Now you have to explore that topic. What’s that mean? It means you have to get to know the topic and understand it before you can expect to write about it. The topic is basically just a broad field for you play in. But in order to connect with your reader, you need to narrow the field. Think of your topic as a ballpark and connecting with your reader as a series of bases that have to be tagged before you can make it home. The topic tells you which ballpark you’ll be playing in—but you still need to step up to the plate and put the ball in play for your audience to care.

So how do you put the ball in play? That’s where our suggested Essay Title can help. It might strike you as a bunt or, meh, as a single. Or you make get one that strikes you as a double or a triple—or maybe one that even looks a like a homerun. It doesn’t really matter because a title is about putting the ball in play. You’re narrowing the focus and just trying to reach base in most cases. Once you’re on you can think about how to get from first to second or from second to third. The end goal is to make it to home plate. But the title is where it starts. It gets you thinking in the right direction. That’s why we don’t just stop at generating a topic idea for you. We also give you a great title to think about. So keep hitting that blue button and generating more results for yourself until you find one that fits!

From Essay Topic to Essay Title

The  essay topic  gets you in the right ballpark, the essay title lets you put the ball in play, and now you have to round the bases—i.e., write your essay. What are the steps to doing this? How do you go from topic to title to writing? Think about the bases on the base path. What shape do they make if you trace a line from home to first to second to third and back to home plate? They make a diamond shape. That’s why it’s called the baseball diamond. Now consider the writing process as a similar shape that you need to create. You’re creating a diamond for your reader and it is basically a step by step process just like rounding the bases.

Need help coming up with a title? Try our  essay title generator.

First, you need to touch first base. Let’s say first base is where you brainstorm using the title you’ve been provided. For example, if you like the title, “Should Public Schools Allow Teachers to Carry Weapons?” you can brainstorm the pros and cons of teacher carry schools. What would be the benefits of having armed teachers in public schools? What would be the drawbacks? What would be your preference if you were a student in such a school? Jot down your answers to these questions. There! See? Now you’re on first base.

Let’s get you over to second. Reaching second base is about pulling those ideas together and giving them some shape. This is where you want to start creating an outline for your essay. You bring these ideas together and arrange them in a way that makes sense. Your outline should start with an introduction that tells what you’ll be looking at in the essay. Then create a section for each point you want to cover: a section for the pros, a section for the cons, and a section for your personal view. Then follow that up with a conclusion that reiterates your points. There you go—that’s an outline!

Now you have to get to third base. Easy—start writing! Follow your outline to stay in the base paths and before you know it you’ll be rounding third and heading for home. To get to home plate all you need to do is go back and edit your essay!

Additional Title Information

You’ll notice that once you hit that big blue button we don’t just give you a topic and a title. We also give you Additional Info. This is where we provide with some more tips to think about when you got to make your outline. For example, with an essay on gun control, you might want to give both perspectives by arguing for one side and then writing a rebuttal. So pay attention to the Additional Info that we offer because it will help you round those bases.

Our Essay Topic Generator is a great way for anyone with writer’s block to get ideas on a topic. Click on the type of essay you need to write by selecting it from the drop down bar. Then click on the Generate Topics button. We’ll give you a topic that fits the type of essay you’re writing. We’ll also give you an essay title to help you get started with the brainstorming process. Finally, we’ll hit you up with some helpful additional info that you can use to flesh out your outline and round the bases towards writing your essay. Hey—no need to thank us! That’s why we’re here: we know that when it comes to writing, every little bit helps.

How to Choose an Essay Topic?

Every writer faces the challenge of topic choice before the process of essay composition actually starts. You can't go on without a clearly defined focus and at least a couple of preliminary research findings that will guide your outline and the line of your argumentation. So, let's focus on the correct algorithm of topic selection in a bit more detail:

  • Choose a topic that excites you. Writing about a familiar subject or something you're excited to discover is much more enjoyable than digging the new material and learning about some concept from scratch.
  • Follow the prompt closely. Avoid off-topic subjects and themes that don't relate to your professor's assignment directly. It's very easy to get driven away by a realm of exciting options, but your course surely has some limitations on that point.
  • Make a topic debatable and manageable. Stick to a topic that is not too narrow or too broad; make it just right to offer valuable academic insights.
  • Ask yourself the 5 W-questions. These questions are the "who, who, what, where, and when" of your research subject. Be sure to cover those issues while narrowing the topic down. This way, you'll have a topic that can be researched hassle-free.

Essay Topic Generator FAQ

A good argumentative topic should communicate your position on a specific issue. For instance, good topics are:

  • Men are as emotional as women, counter to a common stereotype.
  • Printed books offer a better learning experience than e-books.

A persuasive essay is usually written to produce an emotional effect on the readers and achieve a convincing effect. So, persuasive topics usually concern sensitive subjects, such as:

  • School uniforms should be introduced in all schools to prevent bullying.
  • The death penalty should be abolished to save the wrongfully accused people`s lives.

Compare and contrast essays are a type of narrative, expository writing that doesn`t aim to persuade the readers about something. Topics for these essays may look as follows:

  • Classroom vs. distance learning
  • Cats vs. dogs
  • Full-time vs. freelance work

An opinion essay, as its name suggests, argues some opinion and uses supporting evidence to convince the readers of that viewpoint. Some topic examples for opinion essays are:

  • Minors should vote.
  • The U.S. foreign policy is flawed.

An essay topic generator is an automatic smart tool that you may apply to find suitable topics for your essays. You can pick a couple of ideas from the professor`s prompt and check topic suggestions on our website, coming up with an interesting theme quicker than usual.

🎓 Select an Assignment

Let’s start with the basics: did your professor or tutor ask you to prepare an assignment in a particular format, such as an essay? Or are you required to choose your own format and assignment type? If so, select one from the list!

With our topic maker, you can search for an idea specifically for:

Consider what you can write about for a blog. Discover what ideas are relevant and can attract potential readers.

There are a variety of academic papers, with essays being the most common one for students. If you’re assigned to write one, use our topic randomizer to pick the best idea.

The 4 main types of academic writing

Our topic generator can propose titles according to a paper type, with each one having specific characteristics. There are ideas for expository, descriptive, persuasive, argumentative, and creative essays. The tool forms them so that the title and the writing style fit the format.

Whether it’s an assignment or your desire to compose something creative—it doesn’t matter! The topic generator can provide you with an idea that can boost your imagination and give you inspiration.

Whether you’re planning a college essay or a blog post, the generating tool can be helpful. If you don’t find your assignment type listed, search by the subject of interest instead. More on that below.

🙋 Pick a Subject

Do you have an area of research that you're required or willing to dive into? If the answer is yes, then consider the subjects that our generator proposes.

The tool can be a great random science topic generator when you need one. It provides a collection of unique topics on natural sciences, as well as healthcare and medicine. Get ready for extensive research or a quick search for useful information—whatever you choose!

What’s more:

The topic maker also covers social studies. You can find an idea for a paper on law, business, political sciences, history, or even religion. Nowadays, topics on theology are increasingly popular, and our tool can help propose ideas on what to write about.

The themes of theology include God, humanity, the world, savation, and eschatology (the study of last times).

When you’re looking for a creative idea, there are art and design topics for you. You can also find suggestions related to literature or language if it’s your sphere of interest. And ideas for such subjects such as media and education can be helpful regardless of your initial task.

Whatever subject you select, you will get a bunch of engaging ideas. So, what’s next?

👀 Consider the Topics

Having found a list or used the research paper topic generator, look at the proposed ideas. Which ones do you find most intriguing? Worthy of your time?

Choose a few topics and eliminate them one by one. Copy the picked ones and paste elsewhere or write the ideas down. From the ideas proposed by our topic generator, make your own list to compare and contrast items later.

Keep in mind:

If the selected ideas are broad, that’s great! You can narrow your topic down further. A vague idea will give you a starting point from which you can determine specifics later. Remember, you don't want your subject matter to be too narrow, as it can be hard to find any credible information on it.

Don't rush with idea finalization

To figure out the perfect in-between, neither too broad, nor too narrow, try selecting a specific aspect or angle for your essay topic. Or you can explore how various factors affect the narrow subject matter.

Overall, improve the topic!

Don’t be afraid to modify the topic to your needs. You’re the one who will be doing the research and essay writing. You should call the shots.

🎯 Define a Thesis Statement

Now that you have your topic area, see if you can create a thesis statement . You don't have to do it right away, but it can help direct your research and develop your arguments.

To create a thesis statement, try turning the given sentence into a question and then try to answer it. Study the subject matter further if you’re unsure where to begin. It’s crucial as this claim will become your thesis.

Bear in mind:

A thesis statement is neither an essay title nor an announcement. It’s a specific assertion that expresses the essential idea of academic writing. It’s the point you will argue throughout your essay, drawing on examples that prove or support this thesis statement. You create it at the beginning of your paper to make a reader understand the point of your work from the start.

3 steps to write a thesis statement

So, use a topic to come up with one key point that you will write in your thesis statement. If it’s impossible for you, find another point or subject matter. An essay question generator can always help you with the latter.

🔎 Research Your Topic and Start an Outline

At this point, you're ready to start, but for any good paper or speech, you need an in-depth knowledge of the idea that you have chosen to write about. You need to find some factual information to support your thesis statement.

Handbooks and encyclopedias - how useful are they

Start by investigating the idea and composing an outline. If you see that you can't structure and write an appropriate text, change the topic a bit or select an entirely new one. It’s more appropriate to change a subject matter while you are writing, rather than suffer through attempting to compose an entire paper.

To organize your essay or research, include topic sentences at the beginning of each paragraph. They should include the idea you are discussing in that paragraph and they should link to your thesis statement. Coming up with them beforehand can help offer structure to your writing and your research.

Congratulations!

You have now successfully chosen a topic for your academic writing. Use our essay idea generator for future projects and share this article to help others with their writing.

Why Our Essay Topic Generator Will Help You While Studying?

English language courses in high school and college demand a lot of writing assignments from students. When you are a middle school student, the amount of writing assignments isn’t as much and the topics assigned are comparatively easier.

When assigned to write an essay, college students find themselves in a predicament. Whether the professor assigns the topic or asks them to search for it, students are always confused. Finding the right topic is both important and difficult at the same time. Often the topic suggested by the professor is boring or too complicated to understand and coming up with a unique and good idea is even harder - you feel like everything has been talked about already.

Importance of Choosing the Right Topic

We have mentioned that choosing the right topic for your essay is highly important, but why is that?

Let’s put it this way; you have two different topics, one that you don’t understand or find interesting and the second topic that is intriguing and engaging. If you’re asked to write an essay on the first topic that doesn’t fascinate you will almost impossible for you to right, whereas crafting an essay on the second topic and sharing your point of view will be a piece of cake for you.

This is one of the reasons why you need the right topic that you are passionate about in order to make it interesting for you as well as the reader. You must also pay attention to the interest level of your reader who in this case, is your professor in charge of your grade. To make sure your essay is impressive and leaves your professor awestruck, you need an engaging topic to write on.

Another important aspect of writing an essay is research and gathering information. You can pick a topic that apparently looks unique and fascinating, but when it comes to finding relevant information on it – there is none.

How do you expect to prove your claim and get the reader to agree with your side of the argument when writing a persuasive or argumentative paper without any solid information to support your side. An argumentative topic is debatable in nature as everyone has a different opinion and demands the writer to justify his/her opinion using supporting facts and evidence, which is why you must pick the topic that has enough research material available.

For instance, if you’re writing on the topic “Do people who commit horrendous crimes deserve death sentence?”

You can’t write for or against it without having the right information and understanding. You need to solidify your argument with valid evidence because such topics must be handled with sensitivity.

Lastly, some students make the mistake of choosing worn-out topics as they are familiar with it, but this won’t get them a good grade. Professors are tired of having to read the same old topics over and over; they just take a glance at your paper and put it aside if it’s on an overdone topic.

College Essays

feature_orange_notebook_pencil_college_essay_topics

Most colleges and universities in the United States require applicants to submit at least one essay as part of their application. But trying to figure out what college essay topics you should choose is a tricky process. There are so many potential things you could write about!

In this guide, we go over the essential qualities that make for a great college essay topic and give you 50+ college essay topics you can use for your own statement . In addition, we provide you with helpful tips for turning your college essay topic into a stellar college essay.

What Qualities Make for a Good College Essay Topic?

Regardless of what you write about in your personal statement for college , there are key features that will always make for a stand-out college essay topic.

#1: It’s Specific

First off, good college essay topics are extremely specific : you should know all the pertinent facts that have to do with the topic and be able to see how the entire essay comes together.

Specificity is essential because it’ll not only make your essay stand out from other statements, but it'll also recreate the experience for admissions officers through its realism, detail, and raw power. You want to tell a story after all, and specificity is the way to do so. Nobody wants to read a vague, bland, or boring story — not even admissions officers!

For example, an OK topic would be your experience volunteering at a cat shelter over the summer. But a better, more specific college essay topic would be how you deeply connected with an elderly cat there named Marty, and how your bond with him made you realize that you want to work with animals in the future.

Remember that specificity in your topic is what will make your essay unique and memorable . It truly is the key to making a strong statement (pun intended)!

#2: It Shows Who You Are

In addition to being specific, good college essay topics reveal to admissions officers who you are: your passions and interests, what is important to you, your best (or possibly even worst) qualities, what drives you, and so on.

The personal statement is critical because it gives schools more insight into who you are as a person and not just who you are as a student in terms of grades and classes.

By coming up with a real, honest topic, you’ll leave an unforgettable mark on admissions officers.

#3: It’s Meaningful to You

The very best college essay topics are those that hold deep meaning to their writers and have truly influenced them in some significant way.

For instance, maybe you plan to write about the first time you played Skyrim to explain how this video game revealed to you the potentially limitless worlds you could create, thereby furthering your interest in game design.

Even if the topic seems trivial, it’s OK to use it — just as long as you can effectively go into detail about why this experience or idea had such an impact on you .

Don’t give in to the temptation to choose a topic that sounds impressive but doesn’t actually hold any deep meaning for you. Admissions officers will see right through this!

Similarly, don’t try to exaggerate some event or experience from your life if it’s not all that important to you or didn’t have a substantial influence on your sense of self.

#4: It’s Unique

College essay topics that are unique are also typically the most memorable, and if there’s anything you want to be during the college application process, it’s that! Admissions officers have to sift through thousands of applications, and the essay is one of the only parts that allows them to really get a sense of who you are and what you value in life.

If your essay is trite or boring, it won’t leave much of an impression , and your application will likely get immediately tossed to the side with little chance of seeing admission.

But if your essay topic is very original and different, you’re more likely to earn that coveted second glance at your application.

What does being unique mean exactly, though? Many students assume that they must choose an extremely rare or crazy experience to talk about in their essays —but that's not necessarily what I mean by "unique." Good college essay topics can be unusual and different, yes, but they can also be unique takes on more mundane or common activities and experiences .

For instance, say you want to write an essay about the first time you went snowboarding. Instead of just describing the details of the experience and how you felt during it, you could juxtapose your emotions with a creative and humorous perspective from the snowboard itself. Or you could compare your first attempt at snowboarding with your most recent experience in a snowboarding competition. The possibilities are endless!

#5: It Clearly Answers the Question

Finally, good college essay topics will clearly and fully answer the question(s) in the prompt.

You might fail to directly answer a prompt by misinterpreting what it’s asking you to do, or by answering only part of it (e.g., answering just one out of three questions).

Therefore, make sure you take the time to come up with an essay topic that is in direct response to every question in the prompt .

Take this Coalition Application prompt as an example:

What is the hardest part of being a teenager now? What's the best part? What advice would you give a younger sibling or friend (assuming they would listen to you)?

For this prompt, you’d need to answer all three questions (though it’s totally fine to focus more on one or two of them) to write a compelling and appropriate essay.

This is why we recommend reading and rereading the essay prompt ; you should know exactly what it’s asking you to do, well before you start brainstorming possible college application essay topics.

How to Build a College Essay in 6 Easy Steps

Once you’ve decided on a college essay topic you want to use, it’s time to buckle down and start fleshing out your essay. These six steps will help you transform a simple college essay topic into a full-fledged personal statement.

Step 1: Write Down All the Details

Once you’ve chosen a general topic to write about, get out a piece of paper and get to work on creating a list of all the key details you could include in your essay . These could be things such as the following:

  • Emotions you felt at the time
  • Names, places, and/or numbers
  • Dialogue, or what you or someone else said
  • A specific anecdote, example, or experience
  • Descriptions of how things looked, felt, or seemed

If you can only come up with a few details, then it’s probably best to revisit the list of college essay topics above and choose a different one that you can write more extensively on.

Good college essay topics are typically those that:

  • You remember well (so nothing that happened when you were really young)
  • You're excited to write about
  • You're not embarrassed or uncomfortable to share with others
  • You believe will make you positively stand out from other applicants

Step 2: Figure Out Your Focus and Approach

Once you have all your major details laid out, start to figure out how you could arrange them in a way that makes sense and will be most effective.

It’s important here to really narrow your focus: you don’t need to (and shouldn’t!) discuss every single aspect of your trip to visit family in Indonesia when you were 16. Rather, zero in on a particular anecdote or experience and explain why and how it impacted you.

Alternatively, you could write about multiple experiences while weaving them together with a clear, meaningful theme or concept , such as how your math teacher helped you overcome your struggle with geometry over the course of an entire school year. In this case, you could mention a few specific times she tutored you and most strongly supported you in your studies.

There’s no one right way to approach your college essay, so play around to see what approaches might work well for the topic you’ve chosen.

If you’re really unsure about how to approach your essay, think about what part of your topic was or is most meaningful and memorable to you, and go from there.

Step 3: Structure Your Narrative

  • Beginning: Don’t just spout off a ton of background information here—you want to hook your reader, so try to start in the middle of the action , such as with a meaningful conversation you had or a strong emotion you felt. It could also be a single anecdote if you plan to center your essay around a specific theme or idea.
  • Middle: Here’s where you start to flesh out what you’ve established in the opening. Provide more details about the experience (if a single anecdote) or delve into the various times your theme or idea became most important to you. Use imagery and sensory details to put the reader in your shoes.
  • End: It’s time to bring it all together. Finish describing the anecdote or theme your essay centers around and explain how it relates to you now , what you’ve learned or gained from it, and how it has influenced your goals.

body_pen_crinkled_up_paper

Step 4: Write a Rough Draft

By now you should have all your major details and an outline for your essay written down; these two things will make it easy for you to convert your notes into a rough draft.

At this stage of the writing process, don’t worry too much about vocabulary or grammar and just focus on getting out all your ideas so that they form the general shape of an essay . It’s OK if you’re a little over the essay's word limit — as you edit, you’ll most likely make some cuts to irrelevant and ineffective parts anyway.

If at any point you get stuck and have no idea what to write, revisit steps 1-3 to see whether there are any important details or ideas you might be omitting or not elaborating on enough to get your overall point across to admissions officers.

Step 5: Edit, Revise, and Proofread

  • Sections that are too wordy and don’t say anything important
  • Irrelevant details that don’t enhance your essay or the point you're trying to make
  • Parts that seem to drag or that feel incredibly boring or redundant
  • Areas that are vague and unclear and would benefit from more detail
  • Phrases or sections that are awkwardly placed and should be moved around
  • Areas that feel unconvincing, inauthentic, or exaggerated

Start paying closer attention to your word choice/vocabulary and grammar at this time, too. It’s perfectly normal to edit and revise your college essay several times before asking for feedback, so keep working with it until you feel it’s pretty close to its final iteration.

This step will likely take the longest amount of time — at least several weeks, if not months — so really put effort into fixing up your essay. Once you’re satisfied, do a final proofread to ensure that it’s technically correct.

Step 6: Get Feedback and Tweak as Needed

After you’ve overhauled your rough draft and made it into a near-final draft, give your essay to somebody you trust , such as a teacher or parent, and have them look it over for technical errors and offer you feedback on its content and overall structure.

Use this feedback to make any last-minute changes or edits. If necessary, repeat steps 5 and 6. You want to be extra sure that your essay is perfect before you submit it to colleges!

Choosing the right essay topic is foundational to crafting a compelling and insightful essay, affecting reader engagement and the quality of writing.

Understanding the different types of essay topics (persuasive, narrative, descriptive, expository) helps align your topic with the essay's purpose and objectives.

Brainstorming and considering factors such as personal interest, audience appeal, and resource availability are critical steps in selecting an appropriate topic.

Narrowing down your topic list is essential; it involves evaluating each potential topic against key factors to find the most suitable one.

Academic, creative, narrative, opinion, and persuasive essay topics each offer unique opportunities for exploration and expression, catering to various interests and objectives.

Effective research techniques, utilizing tools like Google Scholar, and organization strategies such as mind mapping and outlining are vital for developing your essay topic.

Overcoming writer's block through finding inspiration, switching perspectives, and staying open to new ideas is crucial for maintaining momentum in the writing process.

Fine-tuning your essay topic to ensure clarity, specificity, and alignment with your assignment's scope can dramatically enhance the quality of your essay.

Seeking feedback on your essay topic and thesis statement from peers and instructors can provide valuable insights and lead to significant improvements.

The process of selecting, developing, and refining an essay topic is an iterative one that requires curiosity, creativity, and an open mind.

The journey of crafting an engaging and insightful essay begins with selecting the right topic. This choice is more than just a matter of personal preference; it's about finding a subject that resonates with your audience, aligns with your academic or creative goals, and provides ample scope for exploration and argumentation.

A well-chosen topic not only captivates your readers but also enriches your writing experience, making the process of researching, brainstorming, and drafting the essay more enjoyable and fulfilling. With this comprehensive guide, we aim to equip you with the knowledge and tools necessary to navigate the maze of potential essay topics and select one that promises a compelling and insightful read.

At its core, an essay topic serves as the foundation upon which your entire essay is built. It provides a focal point around which your arguments, narratives, descriptions, or analyses are structured. But what makes a good essay topic?

An effective essay topic does more than simply provide a subject to write about; it shapes the direction and structure of the essay, guiding your research, argument development, and writing style. It acts as a promise to your readers, offering them a glimpse into the insights, stories, or arguments they can expect to encounter as they delve into your essay.

Understanding the various types of essay topics can help you better align your topic with the objectives of your essay. Here are the main categories:

Persuasive : These topics require you to take a stance on a particular issue and persuade your readers of your position using evidence and reasoning.

Narrative : Narrative topics ask you to tell a story, usually from a personal perspective, that conveys a certain theme or lesson.

Descriptive : With descriptive topics, the goal is to paint a vivid picture of a person, place, event, or object, emphasizing sensory details.

Expository : These topics are focused on explaining or analyzing a concept, phenomenon, or process in a clear and logical manner.

Each type of essay topic opens up different avenues for exploration and expression, allowing you to tailor your approach based on the essay’s purpose and your personal interests.

Through this section, it becomes clear that selecting the right essay topic is a nuanced process that involves understanding not only your essay's objective but also the different types of topics available. Providing a solid foundation, this understanding is crucial as we delve further into how to choose the ideal essay topic.

The significance of selecting an apt essay topic cannot be overstated; it is the bedrock upon which a compelling narrative or argument is built. How then does one navigate the myriad options to zero in on the perfect topic? Below we elucidate strategies that can streamline this decision-making process.

Understanding the purpose of your essay is the first critical step. Is it to inform, persuade, narrate, or describe? Aligning your topic with this purpose ensures cohesiveness in your writing, allowing for a more targeted approach to research and composition.

Brainstorming is a powerful technique to generate a plethora of ideas without the constraints of critical judgment. Techniques like mind mapping or free writing can be particularly effective, encouraging a flow of ideas from which you can later select the most promising ones.

When sifting through potential topics, consider:

Personal Interest : Writing about something you're passionate about can be both motivating and rewarding, leading to a richer, more engaged essay.

Audience Appeal : Consider what your intended readers might find intriguing or valuable, ensuring relevance and engagement.

Resource Availability : Ensure there is ample material available to research on your chosen topic. Lack of information can stall your writing process.

Once you have a list of potential topics, evaluate each against the factors above. Narrowing down to the most suitable topic involves a balance between personal interest, resource availability, and audience appeal. This refined list becomes the fertile ground from which your perfect essay topic will emerge.

Diving into specific categories to explore popular essay topics can spark inspiration and give you a direction for your writing journey.

Argumentative Essay Topics : These could range from the implications of social media on society to debates on climate change policies. Engaging with current societal issues can provide a rich tapestry for argumentation.

Compare and Contrast Essay Topics : Exploring the similarities and differences between historical periods, literary works, or theoretical concepts can yield insights into the nuances of your subject matter.

Cause and Effect Essay Topics : Topics like the impact of technology on human interaction invite exploration of the connections between phenomena, encouraging deep analysis.

Sources such as Kibin offer extensive lists of topic ideas across these categories, providing a useful resource for writers seeking inspiration.

Creative and narrative essays offer a canvas for personal expression, allowing for exploration of:

Personal growth experiences: Reflecting on milestones or challenges can offer profound insights.

Historical events through a personal lens: Personalizing history can provide a unique perspective on well-trodden paths.

In an era dominated by information (and misinformation), topics that encourage critical thinking about technology, environmental issues, and politics are both relevant and engaging. Websites like ProCon.org can offer balanced views on controversial issues that make for compelling persuasive essays.

Once you've selected a topic, the next step is to delve into research and development. Effective strategies include:

Utilizing academic databases, credible websites, and primary sources can provide a strong foundation for your essay. Tools like Google Scholar offer access to scholarly articles across various disciplines.

Organizing your thoughts and research findings using mind maps or outlines can clarify your essay's direction. This visual organization can highlight connections between ideas, facilitating a more coherent argument or narrative.

A well-crafted thesis statement defines the scope of your essay, providing a clear argument or premise that guides your writing. It acts as a beacon, keeping your essay focused on the central theme or argument.

Writer's block can be a significant hurdle in the essay-writing process. Strategies to overcome this include:

Finding Inspiration : Sometimes, stepping away to seek inspiration elsewhere — be it a walk in the park or a change of environment — can help refresh your perspective.

Switching Perspectives : Revisiting your topic from a different angle or considering the counterarguments can unlock new avenues of thought.

Ensuring your topic is clear and specific, adjusting the scope to fit your assignment, and seeking feedback can refine your essay topic, making it ready for the writing phase. This fine-tuning process is essential for honing your topic into a focused and engaging subject for your essay.

By meticulously selecting and refining your essay topic, you set the stage for a compelling and insightful essay. Remember, the journey of writing an engaging essay begins with the first step of choosing the right topic. Embrace the process, and let your curiosity and creativity lead the way.

What I’ve Learned From My Students’ College Essays

The genre is often maligned for being formulaic and melodramatic, but it’s more important than you think.

An illustration of a high school student with blue hair, dreaming of what to write in their college essay.

By Nell Freudenberger

Most high school seniors approach the college essay with dread. Either their upbringing hasn’t supplied them with several hundred words of adversity, or worse, they’re afraid that packaging the genuine trauma they’ve experienced is the only way to secure their future. The college counselor at the Brooklyn high school where I’m a writing tutor advises against trauma porn. “Keep it brief , ” she says, “and show how you rose above it.”

I started volunteering in New York City schools in my 20s, before I had kids of my own. At the time, I liked hanging out with teenagers, whom I sometimes had more interesting conversations with than I did my peers. Often I worked with students who spoke English as a second language or who used slang in their writing, and at first I was hung up on grammar. Should I correct any deviation from “standard English” to appeal to some Wizard of Oz behind the curtains of a college admissions office? Or should I encourage students to write the way they speak, in pursuit of an authentic voice, that most elusive of literary qualities?

In fact, I was missing the point. One of many lessons the students have taught me is to let the story dictate the voice of the essay. A few years ago, I worked with a boy who claimed to have nothing to write about. His life had been ordinary, he said; nothing had happened to him. I asked if he wanted to try writing about a family member, his favorite school subject, a summer job? He glanced at his phone, his posture and expression suggesting that he’d rather be anywhere but in front of a computer with me. “Hobbies?” I suggested, without much hope. He gave me a shy glance. “I like to box,” he said.

I’ve had this experience with reluctant writers again and again — when a topic clicks with a student, an essay can unfurl spontaneously. Of course the primary goal of a college essay is to help its author get an education that leads to a career. Changes in testing policies and financial aid have made applying to college more confusing than ever, but essays have remained basically the same. I would argue that they’re much more than an onerous task or rote exercise, and that unlike standardized tests they are infinitely variable and sometimes beautiful. College essays also provide an opportunity to learn precision, clarity and the process of working toward the truth through multiple revisions.

When a topic clicks with a student, an essay can unfurl spontaneously.

Even if writing doesn’t end up being fundamental to their future professions, students learn to choose language carefully and to be suspicious of the first words that come to mind. Especially now, as college students shoulder so much of the country’s ethical responsibility for war with their protest movement, essay writing teaches prospective students an increasingly urgent lesson: that choosing their own words over ready-made phrases is the only reliable way to ensure they’re thinking for themselves.

Teenagers are ideal writers for several reasons. They’re usually free of preconceptions about writing, and they tend not to use self-consciously ‘‘literary’’ language. They’re allergic to hypocrisy and are generally unfiltered: They overshare, ask personal questions and call you out for microaggressions as well as less egregious (but still mortifying) verbal errors, such as referring to weed as ‘‘pot.’’ Most important, they have yet to put down their best stories in a finished form.

I can imagine an essay taking a risk and distinguishing itself formally — a poem or a one-act play — but most kids use a more straightforward model: a hook followed by a narrative built around “small moments” that lead to a concluding lesson or aspiration for the future. I never get tired of working with students on these essays because each one is different, and the short, rigid form sometimes makes an emotional story even more powerful. Before I read Javier Zamora’s wrenching “Solito,” I worked with a student who had been transported by a coyote into the U.S. and was reunited with his mother in the parking lot of a big-box store. I don’t remember whether this essay focused on specific skills or coping mechanisms that he gained from his ordeal. I remember only the bliss of the parent-and-child reunion in that uninspiring setting. If I were making a case to an admissions officer, I would suggest that simply being able to convey that experience demonstrates the kind of resilience that any college should admire.

The essays that have stayed with me over the years don’t follow a pattern. There are some narratives on very predictable topics — living up to the expectations of immigrant parents, or suffering from depression in 2020 — that are moving because of the attention with which the student describes the experience. One girl determined to become an engineer while watching her father build furniture from scraps after work; a boy, grieving for his mother during lockdown, began taking pictures of the sky.

If, as Lorrie Moore said, “a short story is a love affair; a novel is a marriage,” what is a college essay? Every once in a while I sit down next to a student and start reading, and I have to suppress my excitement, because there on the Google Doc in front of me is a real writer’s voice. One of the first students I ever worked with wrote about falling in love with another girl in dance class, the absolute magic of watching her move and the terror in the conflict between her feelings and the instruction of her religious middle school. She made me think that college essays are less like love than limerence: one-sided, obsessive, idiosyncratic but profound, the first draft of the most personal story their writers will ever tell.

Nell Freudenberger’s novel “The Limits” was published by Knopf last month. She volunteers through the PEN America Writers in the Schools program.
