Tourism In IndiaAtithi Devo Bhava…
Presenting By – Ashish Kumar
What is tourism?• Tourism is the travel for recreational (fun),
leisure (rest), family or business purposes, usually of a limited duration.
We can say…• Tourism is commonly associated with trans-national travel, but
may also refer to travel to another location within the same country.
• Temporary, short-term movement of people to destination outside their resident places.
Who is tourist ?
The World Tourism Organization defines tourists as people “traveling to and staying in places outside their usual environment for not more than one consecutive year for leisure, business and other purposes”.
Forms of tourism• Domestic Tourism:
Domestic tourism is tourism involving residents of one country traveling only within that country.
• Inbound Tourism:Incoming tourism is also known as 'inbound tourism'. Incoming tourism means travelers arriving in different countries from their own.
• Outbound Tourism:Outbound tourism refers to residents to travel outside their home country.
TOURISM INDUSTRY IN INDIA

Strength of India for tourism
• Country of rich heritage and traditions having a vast and varied history.
• Places of ancient civilization and settlements dating back to several centuries present in India.
• Unity in Diversity i.e.. Multicultural people staying together in the same country.
• One of the fastest growing economies of the world.• India has been maintaining good and cordial relationship with
different countries which helps the people of those countries to get the visas easily to visit India.
Weakness• Insufficient standard hotels in the country leading to the
problem of accommodation for the visiting tourists. • Lack of proper infrastructure.• Poor health, lack of hygiene and proper sanitation among
majority of people especially in the rural parts of the country.• Incidents of local people harassing and torturing the visiting
tourists especially the foreign tourists in different parts of the country.
Threats• Terrorism- Incidents like 26/11, 11/7 have an impact on the
psyche of the visiting tourists.• These incidents dramatically reduces the foreign tourist
arrivals in India.• The increasing Naxalite activities and constant Maoist attacks
in the country is not helping the cause either.• Diseases in recent years such as Dengue, Chikungunya and
Swine Flu are causing the tourists to stay away from visiting different parts of the country.
• Increasing competition from other exotic countries. Ex- Singapore, Hong Kong etc.

Tourism Department to promote less explored tourism destinations of Mysuru
Follow Us :
Mysuru: Tourism department is mulling plan of action to promote tourism at less popular tourism destinations of Mysuru including UNESCO world heritage site Sri Chennakeshava temple at Somanathapura and others to attract tourists on par with those drawn by few popular destinations.
Even as Mysuru has at least 96 tourist destinations, it is only Chamundi hill, Mysuru Palace, Zoo which attract over five lakh tourists per month, and a few others like Somanathapura attract over 10,000 tourists while the rest, less than 500 or nil.
Ministry of tourism has recognised, listed and funded (for basic amenities) only 26 tourism destinations in and around Mysuru.
Hence tourism department is gearing up to send proposal to recognise, list and provide fund (for basic amenities), for 70 more tourism destinations including St Philomena's church, Railway museum, Lalitha Mahal Palace, Government Silk factory, Rangayana, Folklore Museum, Indira Gandhi National Manav Sangrahalay, Wax museum, Edathore, Kappadi, Kandagannaswamy Gaddige and others.
Joint Director of Department of Tourism, M K Savitha informed this and said that they plan to create smaller theme based tourism circuits by connecting various destinations. They plan for 'monument tour-connecting monuments', 'museum tour-connecting all museums', 'eco tourism-connecting Nagarahole Tiger Reserve, rivers, dams and lakes', 'spiritual tourism-connecting all temples', 'wellness tourism-connecting all Yoga centers and AYUSH retreat centers' to ensure tourists explore these lesser known destinations, she said.
She added that they have plans to popularise all these unexplored/less explored destinations in a bigger way through social media platforms. They have already organised contests of photos and short videos of these unexplored tourism destinations of Mysuru to feature them well on social media platforms. The deadline to send them has been extended by 15 days up to July 5, she said.
Savitha informed that, they are planning to hold a 'Bloggers meet' along with Karnataka Tourism Forum (KTF) involving over 35 noted bloggers and social media influencers with good number of followers, she said.
KTF Vice President M Ravi added that during the meet, they plan to create an experience to these bloggers with visits to Somanathapura, Talakadu and highlight their importance; host interaction with Mysore Kodagu MP and member of erstwhile royal family Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar at Mysuru Palace, and conclude day with cultural event, he said.
District Tourism Committee led by Mysuru DC Dr K V Rajendra even plans to hold activities round the year apart from Dasara, to have same flow of tourists all through the year.
Mysore Hotel Owners' Association President C Narayangowda said, "There would be 100 per cent occupancy of hotel rooms by tourists during weekends and over 70 per cent during weekdays only during peak season. During the rest of the period occupancy will be 50-60 per cent during weekends and 30 per cent during weekdays. Currently over 30 per cent are tourists from other States, 5 per cent are foreigners. With promotion of unexplored destinations, we can retain tourists for a longer period and enhance tourists' flow round the year, and we can pull more tourists from other States and Countries. Also boards of tourism destinations should be in English, Kannada and Hindi to help outside tourists," he said.
KTF VP Ravi also felt "With price rise and high taxes, the cost of stay in rooms in hotel and resorts, travel expenses including Air ticket costs have increased by at least 5-20 per cent this year, when compared to previous year. So tourists are preferring to travel to places like Kashmir and small countries like Thailand, as the cost of travelling and stay at those places is almost the same as travel and stay at Kodagu now. So there should be capping on prices including hotel room rents to pull more tourists to Mysuru and other places. Also all the existing tourism destinations should be maintained well, and basic amenities should be provided in all less explored destinations" he said.
Badri Narayan Krishnan, a consultant said, "Mysuru is always a favourite tourism destination. It will be even more exciting to explore all hidden treasures of Mysuru if more information is provided about them," he said..
Among 26 recognised tourism destinations in Mysuru, in May alone, Chamundi hill had 6,13,148 visitors including 1,811 foreigners; Mysuru Palace had 5,31,362 visitors including 1,267 foreigners; Sri Chamarajendra Zoological garden had 5,17,611 visitors.
Bylakuppe Golden temple had 1,76,618 visitors; Talakadu had 1,05,400 tourists including 35 foreigners; Srikanteshwara temple at Nanjangud had 42,136 visitors; Nagarahole Tiger Reserve had 21,267 visitors including 73 visitors.
But Somanathapura had just 14,039 visitors including 246 visitors, Varuna lake had 10,982 visitors including 86 foreigners, Gommatagiri had 7,937 including 32 foreigners. There were either no visitors or less than 500 visitors to Jaganmohan Palace Art gallery, Cauvery Multimedia Art Gallery, Badanavalu Gandhi Ashram, Gargeshwari, Chikkadevamma hill, Tagaduru temple complex, Kharapura, Lingambudi lake, Cauvery river catchment, Kabini back water or dam, Chunchankatte falls, Chikkahunsur lake, Saligrama Doddakere, Taraka and Nugu dams.

How India-China Direct Flights Went From 539 … to Zero
Peden Doma Bhutia , Skift
June 27th, 2024 at 12:01 AM EDT
Two tourism powerhouses, two economic giants, two of the world's most populous countries — and yet, not a single direct flight between India and China.
Peden Doma Bhutia
In December 2019, India and China were connected through 539 direct passenger flights. Now there are none.
IndiGo and Air India had operated flights to China while Air China, China Southern Airlines, and China Eastern Airlines, had connected Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou to Indian cities.
The two countries suspended these flights during the Covid-19 pandemic and subsequent border clashes in June 2020 – there are still thousands of troops mobilized on both sides.
A recent Reuters report said that China has been pushing to resume direct air links between the two countries, but India remains cautious due to the strained diplomatic relations.
Current Travel Routes and Costs
In the absence of direct flights, travelers between India and China must rely on connecting flights through third countries, such as Hong Kong, Bangkok, and Singapore. The detour adds time and cost.
In 2019, a round-trip economy class ticket between New Delhi and Beijing typically ranged between $350 to $550, and took around six hours. Currently, the shortest flight duration between New Delhi and Beijing is 10.5 hours, with fares around $1,280. The cheapest available flights take roughly 12 hours and cost $650.
“China’s strict Covid-19 travel policies, including the ‘circuit-breaker’ rule which suspended flights if passengers tested positive upon arrival, further complicated the resumption of direct flights,” said Linus Benjamin Bauer, founder and managing director of Bauer Aviation Advisory. Although China has relaxed this rule, it has not yet led to the resumption of direct flights, Bauer noted.
Visa Restrictions
Visa restrictions are also a barrier.
Nuo Li, a sustainable tourism consultant from Beijing, experienced this firsthand when applying for an Indian e-visa in March 2024 in London, where she currently lives.
Li first visited India in March 2019 on a straightforward double-entry e-visa to meet her boyfriend’s family in the southern Indian state of Kerala. This year, she found no travel visa category for Chinese nationals.
“During my appointment at the VFS office in London, the staff handling my application informed me that they could not accept my application and advised me to seek special approval from the Indian Embassy in London,” Li told Skift. She said she wrote to the Indian embassy but hasn’t received any response so far.
Responding to a Skift query, a VFS Global spokesperson said, “Chinese nationals applying for an Indian visa must submit their applications from their home country as per the directives of the High Commission of India.”
The spokesperson said that for further clarification, applicants would need to directly contact the High Commission of India in London.
The Consulate General of India’s office in Guangzhou states on its website that e-visas for Chinese nationals are “temporarily suspended.” “All those who have a compelling reason to visit India may contact the Embassy of India in Beijing or the Indian consulates in Shanghai or Guangzhou, as well as the Indian Visa Application Centres in these cities,” the notice reads.
Tourism Demand
Wolfgang Georg Arlt, a China tourism expert, noted that even before the pandemic, travel between India and China was relatively low, as most of the traffic was made up of business people, students or medical tourists.
Arlt, who is also the CEO of Chinese Outbound Tourism Research Institute (COTRI), cited COTRI research that highlighted that Chinese travelers have a negative perception of India, while Indians do not feel welcome in China.
Arlt said that while direct flights would help, improving political relations and addressing these negative perceptions would have a more significant impact on travel demand.
Mary Li, CEO and founder of travel tech startup Atlas , said that political tensions, changing policies and the pandemic have greatly affected travel between the two countries.
Despite this, Li said there is still significant demand for travel: Chinese travelers have conducted almost 24 million flight searches for India so far this year, according to Atlas data.
The most popular routes include Shanghai-Mumbai and Shanghai-Delhi, followed by Chengdu and Guangzhou as other popular departure cities.
Business Travel
Li said that many Chinese companies having stopped operations in India, and that this has led to a decline in business travel demand.
With 539 scheduled flights suspended, FCM Travel India has also seen a drop in business travel, said Sunny Sodhi, managing director of FCM Travel India.
“It is not just the lack of direct flights between India and China, but also the complexities around getting visa approvals which impact the ability and ease to travel between these two countries,” Sodhi said.
However, Sodhi noted that this has also led to Dubai emerging as a popular business hub for Indian travelers and Singapore for China. He said this is also backed by easing of visa processes between these countries.

UP to promote Buddhist pilgrimage tourism
Uttar Pradesh rich cultural tapestry includes not just the revered sites associated with Lord Ram but also key locations integral to the life and teachings of Lord Buddha. To cash in on these Buddhist pilgrimage sites in the State, the UP Government recently launched the "Bodhi Yatra 2024" program to attract pilgrims and tourists from across India and the world, drawn by their historical and spiritual importance.
At an event held here in the national capital, the UP Tourism Department announced a slew of initiatives to attract domestic and international pilgrims and tourists to the renowned Buddhist pilgrimage sites in the state. It is home to many places once visited by the Buddha and sacred Buddhist stupas, monasteries, shrines and stupas, some of which date back to the days of the Buddha himself. He spent much of his life in the region with the spots of his first and last sermons located in the state.
The State boasts of six major Buddhist sites: Sankisa, Sarnath, Shravasti, Kapilvastu, Kaushambi, and Kushinagar.
Uttar Pradesh's Tourism Minister, Jaiveer Singh, explained that the objective of this journey is to showcase the memories of Lord Buddha's ordinary life journey through the heritage sites of Buddhism in the state.
"Throughout the year, this journey aims to familiarize people across India with the significant messages of Buddha," said the Minister as he announced that through various artistic presentations, the Tourism Department will highlight Uttar Pradesh's contributions to Buddhist art, culture, and the importance and connection of Lord Buddha.
Furthermore, an interactive cultural session was also organized during the Bodhi Yatra program, inviting guests from various countries. The program will now be organized periodically in various cities across the country, which will enhance the reach of the pilgrimage, said the Principal Secretary of Tourism and Culture Mukesh Kumar Meshram. The conclave featured Ambassadors and other diplomats from Singapore, Thailand, Myanmar, Bhutan, Japan, Indonesia, Argentina, Mongolia, Sri Lanka, and Vietnam.
Union Minister of Tourism and Culture Gajendra Singh Shekhawat echoed similar sentiments, appreciating Uttar Pradesh for spearheading the Buddha Circuit, a visionary project to connect pilgrims with the spiritual journey of Lord Buddha, from birth to enlightenment.
