Order of Operations Worksheets
Welcome to the order of operations worksheets page at Math-Drills.com where we definitely follow orders! This page includes Order of Operations worksheets using whole numbers, integers, decimals and fractions.
Elementary and middle school students generally use the acronyms PEMDAS or BEDMAS to help them remember the order in which they complete multi-operation questions. The 'P' or 'B' in the acronym stands for parentheses or brackets. All operations within parentheses get completed first. The 'E' refers to exponents; all exponents are calculated after the parentheses. The 'M' and 'D' are interchangeable as one completes the multiplication and division in the order that they appear from left to right. The fourth and final step is to solve for the addition and subtraction in the order that they appear from left to right.
More recently, students are being taught the acronym, PEMA, for order of operations, to avoid the confusion inherent in the other acronyms. For example, in PEMDAS, multiplication comes before division which some people incorrectly assumes means that multiplication must be done before division in an order of operations question. In fact, the two operations are completed in the order that they occur from left to right in the question. This is recognized in PEMA which more correctly shows that there are four levels to complete in an order of operations question.
Unless you want your students doing something different than the rest of the world, it would be a good idea to get them to understand these rules. There is no discovery or exploration needed here. These are rules that need to be learned and practiced and have been accepted as the standard approach to solving any multi-step mathematics problem.

The worksheets in this section include questions with parentheses, addition, and multiplication. Exponents, subtraction, and division are excluded. The purpose of excluding some parts of PEMDAS is to ease students into how the order of operations works. To help students see a purpose for the order of operations, try to associate the expressions with related scenarios. For example, 2 + 7 × 3 could refer to the number of days in two days and three weeks. (9 + 2) × 15 could mean the total amount earned if someone worked 9 hours yesterday and 2 hours today for $15 an hour.

As with other order of operation worksheets, the fractions order of operations worksheets require some prerequisite knowledge. If your students struggle with these questions, it probably has more to do with their ability to work with fractions than the questions themselves. Observe closely and try to pin point exactly what prerequisite knowledge is missing then spend some time going over those concepts/skills before proceeding. Otherwise, the worksheets below should have fairly straight-forward answers and shouldn't result in too much hair loss.

Order of Operations for Grade 5
In grade 5, students continue to build on their understanding of the order of operations. The order of operations for grade 5 follows the same principles as in grade 4, but it includes exponents to represent repeated multiplication and nested parenthesis. (refer to the above links if you need to build on your understanding of order of operations)
Here’s the order of operations for grade 5:
- Perform calculations inside parentheses first, starting from the innermost parentheses and working outward.
- Evaluate any exponents or powers (repeated multiplication) in the expression.
- Perform multiplication and division operations from left to right.
- Perform addition and subtraction operations from left to right.
Example: Expression: 5 + (3 × 4) - 2² Perform calculations inside parentheses: 3 × 4 = 12 Expression becomes: 5 + 12 - 2² Evaluate the exponent: 2² = 2 × 2 = 4 Expression becomes: 5 + 12 - 4 Perform addition and subtraction: 5 + 12 = 17 17 - 4 = 13 Therefore, 5 + (3 × 4) - 2² = 10. We can write the evaluation like this: 5 + (3 × 4) - 2² = 5 + 12 - 2² = 5 + 12 - 4 = 17 - 4 = 13

Order of Operations for Grade 5 Students
![order of operations 5th grade homework order of operations 5th grade homework](https://www.k5learning.com/themes/custom/k5_b/images/Pinterest.png)
Here’s how to teach the PEMDAS order of operations to grade 5 students:
![](http://ortec.site/777/templates/cheerup1/res/banner1.gif)
Start simply
Start with simple examples: Begin by using simple examples that involve only two operations, such as 5 + 2 x 3. Teach the students that they should first perform the multiplication (2 x 3) before adding 5 to the product (6 + 5 = 11).
Introduce parentheses
Once your student understands the concept of performing multiplication before addition, introduce parentheses. For example, 6 + (5 x 2) should be solved by first performing the multiplication (5 x 2 = 10) inside the parentheses, then adding 6 to the product (10 + 6 = 16).
Move on to more complex expressions
Once your kids are comfortable with simple examples, move on to more complex expressions, such as 3 x (5 + 2) - 4 / 2. Teach them to start with the parentheses (5 + 2 = 7), then perform the multiplication (3 x 7 = 21), and finally, perform the division (4 / 2 = 2) before subtracting (21 - 2 = 19).
Introduce exponents
Once your kids master the complex expressions, you’ll want to introduce exponents. For example (53 – 4) / 11. 53 is 125. 125 – 4 = 121. 121 / 11 = 11.
Use real-life examples
Use real-life examples, such as calculating the cost of items on sale or the time it takes to travel a certain distance at a certain speed, to make the concept more relatable and engaging for your young learners.
Provide plenty of practice
Provide students with plenty of practice problems that involve using the PEMDAS order of operations, and encourage them to check their work carefully by following the acronym.
Speaking of practice, we have a series of order of operations worksheets for grade 5 students to practice.
Four operations and parenthesis worksheets
These worksheets include the four operations with parenthesis . There are no exponents in these worksheets. These worksheets have students practice the complex expressions.
Practice PEMDAS including exponents
The next set of worksheets introduce exponents in the order of operations .
PEMDAS with nested parenthesis
Next, we introduce double and triple brackets , also called nested parentheses.

- The first generator (grades 2-5) lets you choose from five different operations to include (the four basic operations plus exponents), choose to include parentheses or not , and choose the basic number ranges used in the different operations. You can use decimals or whole numbers. This generator uses the symbol × for multipliciation and ÷ for division, as is customary in elementary grades. You can also control the workspace below problems, font size, and the border around each problem. Unfortunately, the first generator does not work correctly if you include both exponents and parenthesis. Sorry about that! However, I feel it is STILL very useful for what it does do.
- The second generator (grades 6-9) includes by default all four operations and parenthesis. You can choose to include exponents or not. The second one uses a raised dot (·) for multiplication (as is customary in algebra). It uses a fraction line for division, and thus involves fractions . Again, you can include decimals or not, control the number of problems, workspace below the problems, font size, and whether there is a border around the problems.

Creations from a 5th Grade Teacher
Order of Operations with Grouping Symbols
Order of Operations is one of my favorite skills to teach in 5th Grade. It’s organized, follows rules, and has a final answer.
I like to break up this unit and teach it in 3 parts, slowly introducing each grouping symbol one at a time: parentheses, brackets, and then braces.
In the classroom, I provide students with printable notes pages to introduce each mini-lesson. We work through example problems together on a smartboard, and then students break off to practice independently.
For distance learning (or in a classroom with technology), I’ve added a digital version to my printable Order of Operations activities. To make things easier for teachers, I’ve also recorded videos that students can view within each set of notes and activities. They can click on a slide and view an instructional video where I take them step-by-step through solving various expressions. I explain both the steps for solving it as well as the technical aspects of completing the slides. This is also a great resource for parents who may be struggling to help their students at home.
Each of the 3 Lessons Include :
- Instructional page
- Two detailed examples
- One video shows students how to solve the problems using their keyboard
- One video shows students how to use the symbols in the student tools area of the
- practice pages (2 sets – 8 questions each)
- morning work pages (2 sets – 8 questions each)
- homework pages (2 sets – 8 questions each)
Instructional Video Example
Students will be able to watch tutorial videos like the one posted below.
To check on student progress, I give students exit tickets throughout the unit. The exit ticket is just one order of operations expression that students solve in a Google Form. It’s a quick and easy way for me to assess mastery and create flexible groups.
Whether you’re using instructing in the classroom with or without technology, or you’re teaching virtually, make your Order of Operations unit simple and easy for students to understand.
