We carefully consider other qualities and interests through your personal statement. Explaining why you’re choosing a course is essential and your knowledge of and interest in Adult Nursing should be evident. Voluntary or paid experience in a care setting is welcomed, and you’re strongly advised to make links between the knowledge, values and skills gained in these experiences and the course being applied for. Other experience that demonstrates your commitment and your ability to work in a team is also valuable.

References are also required. You should provide an academic reference if possible - but failing this, an employer’s reference. Friends as referees are not accepted. If you’re applying to transfer from another institution, a reference and a transcript from that institution are required.

Practical learning experiences arranged by the Faulty of Health Sciences and Sport in conjunction with our practice partners may cover a wide geographical area. You’ll be expected to be able to travel to all practice areas within NHS Forth Valley.

To the extent relevant to this course, your check may also show details of any minor offences, fixed penalty notices or penalty notices for disorder.

Previous criminal convictions need not exclude you, but all convictions must be declared and some occurrences may result in an unsuccessful application. A panel may be convened to determine the applicant’s fitness for accessing practice placements.

All applicants must be passed fit by occupational health. This will require a questionnaire and a personal visit to the campus.

To protect your privacy, neither of these checks will normally be carried out until after an offer has been made.

This process is subject to change.

You’ll gain the knowledge, skills, attitudes and values that are essential to deliver safe, compassionate, respectful, ethical and effective care in an evolving and dynamic health and social care environment.

Each year of the degree meets the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) requirement of 50% theory and 50% practice. You will work all shift patterns of the practice learning environment which may involve both day and night shifts to experience the full learning opportunities of these areas.

This course is designed for you to achieve the proficiencies required for registration in the UK as a nurse.

You’ll study alongside our Mental Health Nursing students throughout your programme and our BSc Paramedic Science students during Year 1 of the programme to gain a holistic understanding of how health and social care professionals work together to bring about the best in patient-centred care.

We’ll also focus on developing the leadership and management skills needed to foster quality and innovation within the health and social care setting.

What our students said

Jon Feeney

Studying a nursing degree can be a significant undertaking, but trust me when I say it is one of the most rewarding things I've ever done and definitely worth it!

Sofie Uygun

Each day offers a new experience and the variety of the placements was unexpected. You get to experience a range of different healthcare settings and often the places you didn’t think you’d enjoy are the best.

Graeme Black

What I particularly enjoy about the course is the input that guest speakers have. It's always interesting to see what other people bring to your field, and some of the lectures that allowed people to talk about their experiences of caring for their families have really been moving.

Ou future nurse programmes.

Students can study one of four fields of nursing in preparation for entry to the NMC register.

Find the list of courses here

For over 17 years, we've delivered a highly successful work-based pre-registration nursing programme in partnership with healthcare employers.  From Autumn 2020, we introduced our exciting new Future Nurse curriculum to meet the new standards for nursing education published by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC 2018).

In Northern Ireland we work closely in partnership with all five Health and Social Care Trusts across Northern Ireland to produce the nurses of the future and address the shortage of nurses within Northern Ireland.

In 2016, The Open University also began working in partnership with the independent sector to offer student nursing places to Healthcare Assistants employed within independent nursing homes.

Currently there are over 600 employees registered on the Nursing programmes within both sectors and we have received 175 places for student nurses from the Department of Health.

For more information email our Nursing Team

Nursing is a career for all, and at The Open University we work proactively here in Northern Ireland with Queens University, Belfast and Ulster University to promote nursing as a highly rewarding career which is open to all people from all walks of life.

Department Nursing & Healthcare

Course Overview

This course involves the study of theoretical and practice based modules. It involves classroom teaching and taught placements in a variety of clinical and non-clinical settings. This honours degree programme takes advantage of the various areas of expertise available at the three regional hospitals in the Health Service Executive Midlands area in Tullamore, Portlaoise and Mullingar, throughout the Midlands (Laois/Offaly and Longford/Westmeath) and with private healthcare facilities nationally.

Students will undergo a total of 2,925 hours clinical study and 1,740 hours theoretical study across the four year programme. Successful completion of the programme leads to the award of a Bachelor of Science (Hons) in General Nursing from TUS and registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland. Registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland as a Registered General Nurse (RGN) allows you to work as a general nurse nationally and internationally.

Additional Information TUS uses the Garda Central Vetting Unit (GCVU) to assess the suitability of applicants to this programme. This is due to the considerable amount of placements undertaken with children and vulnerable groups in society. Therefore, offers to this programme are conditional and could subsequently be withdrawn if applicants do not meet the Garda vetting requirements. Vaccinations for all Nursing and Healthcare students: Please note that (1) As health care students, vaccinations may be advocated not only in the interest of the individual student, but also as a protection to health service users and workers, some of whom may have medical vulnerabilities. Getting vaccinated helps to protect people around students, particularly people at increased risk for severe illness from certain viruses.

(2) Access to educational opportunities in some health care settings may not be granted to health care students if they are not and will not agree to vaccination that is not otherwise contraindicated. In many instances it may not be possible for the Higher Educational Institutions to provide alternative training/educational opportunities to replace this access. As placements are a critical component of nursing programmes and are regulated Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland requirements, this in turn may delay progression through and potential completion of a nursing educational programme at TUS.

Full details of the HSEs COVID19 vaccination programme can be found at: COVID-19 vaccines – HSE.ie

Professional Recognition:

Successful completion of the programme leads to the award of a Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Nursing in General Nursing from TUS and registration with the Nursing & Midwifery Board of Ireland. The award of a Registered General Nurse (RGN) is nationally and internationally recognised.

TUS offered this opportunity to me through both lectures on campus and placements throughout the Midlands hospital groups. It really gave an accurate insight into this career and prepares you for your journey ahead as a nurse.” (Abby Mullaly)

What our students say

I embarked on a business module at a time when I was navigating significant change in my own life. The Skill Up fund has set me firmly on my way to a full Master of Business (MBA) qualification, something I would not have considered were it not for this opportunity. Sarah A, OU student
When I started my journey with the OU, I honestly never thought I would achieve the academic record I have and I’m immensely proud. The opportunities that are now available to me are vast and I am a huge advocate for the Open University as a mechanism to achieve that. If you get the opportunity to apply for a fully funded place don’t hesitate, it’s a fantastic opportunity to upskill and gain further qualifications and without the burden of debt. Sarah M, OU student
