Spider-Man: No Way Home

movie review quality

The best of “Spider-Man: No Way Home” reminded me why I used to love comic books, especially the ones about a boy named Peter Parker. There was a playful unpredictability to them that has often been missing from modern superhero movies, which feel so precisely calculated. Yes, of course, “No Way Home” is incredibly calculated, a way to make more headlines after killing off so many of its event characters in Phase 3, but it’s also a film that’s often bursting with creative joy.

Director Jon Watts and his team have delivered a true event movie, a double-sized crossover issue of a comic book that the young me would have waited in line to read first, excitedly turning every page with breathless anticipation of the next twist and turn. And yet they generally avoid getting weighed down by the expectations fans have for this film, somehow sidestepping the cluttered traps of other crowded part threes. “No Way Home” is crowded, but it’s also surprisingly spry, inventive, and just purely entertaining, leading to a final act that not only earns its emotions but pays off some of the ones you may have about this character that you forgot.

Note: I will very carefully avoid spoilers but stay offline until you see it because there are going to be landmines on social media.

“No Way Home” picks up immediately after the end of “Spider-Man: Far From Home,” with the sound of that film’s closing scene playing over the Marvel logo. Mysterio has revealed the identity of the man in the red tights, which means nothing will ever be the same for Peter Parker ( Tom Holland ). With an almost slapstick energy, “No Way Home” opens with a series of scenes about the pitfalls of super-fame, particularly how it impacts Peter’s girlfriend M.J. (Zendaya) and best bud Ned ( Jacob Batalon ). It reaches a peak when M.I.T. denies all three of them admission, citing the controversy about Peter’s identity and the roles his buddies played in his super-adventures.

Peter has a plan. The “wizard” he met when he saved half the population with The Avengers can cast a spell and make it all go away. So he asks Dr. Strange ( Benedict Cumberbatch ) to make the world forget that Spider-Man is Peter Parker, which, of course, immediately backfires. He doesn’t want M.J. or Ned or Aunt May ( Marisa Tomei ) to forget everything they’ve been through together, and so the spell gets derailed in the middle of it. Strange barely gets it under control. And then Doc Ock ( Alfred Molina ) and the Green Goblin ( Willem Dafoe ) show up.

As the previews have revealed, “Spider-Man: No Way Home” weaves characters and mythology from the other cinematic iterations of this character into the universe of the current one, but I’m happy to report that it’s more than a casting gimmick. My concern going in was that this would merely be a case of “ Batman Forever ” or even “ Spider-Man 3 ,” where more was often the enemy of good. It’s not. The villains that return from the Sam Raimi and Marc Webb films don’t overcrowd the narrative as much as they speak to a theme that emerges in the film that ties this entire series back to the other ones. For a generation, the line about Spidey was “With great power comes great responsibility.” “Spider-Man: No Way Home” is about the modern Peter Parker learning what that means. (It also helps a great deal to have actors like Molina and Dafoe in villain roles again given how the lack of memorable villains has been a problem in the MCU.)

So many modern superhero movies have confronted what it means to be a superhero, but this is the first time it’s really been foregrounded in the current run of Peter Parker, which turns “No Way Home” into something of a graduation story. It’s the one in which Parker has to grow up and deal with not just the fame that comes with Spider-Man but how his decisions will have more impact than most kids planning to go to college. It asks some interesting questions about empathy as Peter is put in a position to basically try to save the men who tried to kill other multiverse iterations of him. And it playfully becomes a commentary on correcting mistakes of the past not just in the life of Holland’s Parker but those of characters (and even filmmakers) made long before he stepped into the role. “No way Home” is about the weight of heroic decisions. Even the right ones mean you may not be able to go home again.

Watts hasn’t gotten enough credit in his other two Spider-Man movies for his action and “No Way Home” should correct that. There are two major sequences—a stunner in a mirror dimension in which Spidey fights Strange, and the climactic one—but it’s also filled with expertly rendered minor action beats throughout. There’s a fluidity to the action here that’s underrated as Mauro Fiore ’s camera swoops and dives with Spider-Man. And the big final showdown doesn’t succumb to the common over-done hollowness of MCU climaxes because it has undeniable emotional weight. I also want to note that Michael Giacchino ’s score here is one of the best in the MCU, by far. It’s one of the few themes in the entire cinematic universe that feels heroic.

With so much to love about “No Way Home,” the only shame is that it’s not a bit more tightly presented. There’s no reason for this movie to be 148 minutes, especially given how much the first half has a habit of repeating its themes and plot points. Watts (and the MCU in general) has a habit of over-explaining things and there’s a sharper version of “No Way Home” that trusts its audience a bit more, allowing them to unpack the themes that these characters have a habit of explicitly stating. And, no offense to Batalon, turning Ned into a major character baffles me a bit. He always feels like a distraction from what really works here. On the other hand, this is the first of these three films that has allowed Zendaya and Holland’s chemistry to shine. In particular, she nails the emotional final beats of her character in a way that adds weight to a film that can feel a bit airy in terms of performance.

“Spider-Man: No Way Home” could have just been a greatest hits, a way to pull different projects into the same IP just because the producers can. Some will see it that way just on premise alone, but there’s more going on here than the previews would have you believe. It’s about what historic heroes and villains mean to us in the first place—why we care so much and what we consider a victory over evil. More than any movie in the MCU that I can remember, it made me want to dig out my old box of Spider-Man comic books. That’s a heroic accomplishment.

The 50 best movies of all time, according to critics

  • Insider ranked the best films of all time, based on Metacritic scores.
  • They include recent Oscar winners " Moonlight " and " Parasite " and classics like " The Godfather " and " Citizen Kane ."

Insider Today

To find out which films have been the most critically acclaimed over time, Insider turned to the reviews aggregator Metacritic for this ranking, which scores films by their composite critical reception.

The resulting list includes modern masterpieces like recent Oscar winners " Moonlight " and " Parasite " in contention with classics like " The Godfather " and " Citizen Kane ."

There's also, not surprisingly, a lot of Hitchcock.

This post has been updated. John Lynch contributed to a previous version of this post.

12. "Intolerance" (1916)

movie review quality

What critics said : "The plunging and roving camera provides visceral thrills; ecstatic special effects capture the sacred (the Crucifixion) and the profane (combat in the Great War); a metaphysical framing device (starring Lillian Gish) raises human conflict to universal import; and Griffith's trademark closeups lend a quivering lip or a trembling hand the tragic grandeur of historical cataclysm." — New Yorker

11. "Moonlight" (2016)

movie review quality

What critics said : "Like Brokeback Mountain a decade ago, Moonlight is a piece of art that will transform lives long after it leaves theaters." — The Playlist

What critics said : "Escapism raised to the level of art, Singin' In The Rain inventively satirizes the illusions of the filmmaking process while celebrating their life-affirming joy." — AV Club

8. "Notorious" (1946)

movie review quality

Critic score: 100/100

User score: 8.0/10

What critics said : "Love is a dark, corroded obsession in Alfred Hitchcock's Notorious, a black-velvet biocide brimming with notes of tabloid titillation, spy-versus-spy nonsense, and romance as rotten as a half-eaten Granny Smith left out in the summer sun." — Slant

7. "Vertigo" (1958)

movie review quality

What critics said : "The greatest sexual suspense drama ever made has come to be regarded by many Hitchcock admirers as his most accomplished film. It is certainly his most forlorn, and easily his most mesmerizing." — San Francisco Chronicle

6. "Three Colors: Red" (1994)

movie review quality

Critic score:  100/100

What critics said : "It is a film of much humanity and very far from smart European pap. But the external brilliance of its making does at times subvert its inner workings, as if its manufacture and its meaning were not quite in perfect harmony." — Guardian

5. "Boyhood" (2014)

movie review quality

User score: 7.6/10

What critics said : "On rare occasions a movie seems to channel the flow of real life. Boyhood is one of those occasions. In its ambition, which is matched by its execution, Richard Linklater's endearing epic is not only rare but unique." — Wall Street Journal

4. "Casablanca" (1943)

movie review quality

User score: 8.9/10

What critics said : "The dialogue is so spare and cynical it has not grown old-fashioned. Much of the emotional effect of Casablanca is achieved by indirection; as we leave the theater, we are absolutely convinced that the only thing keeping the world from going crazy is that the problems of three little people do after all amount to more than a hill of beans." — Chicago Sun-Times

3. "Rear Window" (1954)

movie review quality

What critics said : "There is never an instant, in fact, when Director Hitchcock is not in minute and masterly control of his material: script, camera, cutting, props, the handsome set constructed from his ideas, the stars he has Hitched to his vehicle." — Time

2. "Citizen Kane" (1941)

movie review quality

What critics said : "What's magical about Kane — the sheer transformative thrill of invention — is there in every shot, every performance, every narrative surge." — Entertainment Weekly

1. "The Godfather" (1972)

movie review quality

User score:  9.2/10

What critics said : " The Godfather traces the arc of this doomed idealism with a beauty that is still fresh." — LA Weekly

Which movie review site do you trust the most?

The critical success of a movie is one of its defining aspects. When looking at reviews for a movie, which movie review site do you trust the most when looking for a movie?

For example, there's Rotten Tomatoes where the critic reviews and audience reviews are often contrasting. Most of the time its high critic reviews and low audience reviews or low critic reviews and high audience reviews. Or there's Amazon Prime. Most movies that are remotely uplifting, or evokes positives feelings in the watcher gets a high rating. The movie Finding Forrester, has lower movie reviews across most of the major movie review sites and it gets a 5 star rating. Meanwhile, there's Manchester by the Sea, which has better reviews on other sites and it gets a 3 star rating. Or do movie reviews matter much to you? Are you more influenced to watch a movie based on its premise or cast members?

For me, it's a combination of both movie reviews, the premise that I go out to watch a movie. If I see a director or actor I like, its a bonus. I use IMDB, Rotten Tomatoes , Letterboxd, and people's review on Reddit (lol) and take the reviews into account, but I don't set any expectations based on the reviews I see. I don't want my movie experience to be ruined.

I Use This One Spotify Trick to Make All My Music Sound Better

I'm done with streaming platforms: here's why i'm heading back to cable, how to find better-quality versions of your favorite songs.

Checking the quality of a movie means two different things: the literal quality of the copy you're downloading, and the critical quality of the movie itself. In this article we help you check both.

When you download films from the web, you'll find yourself faced with a long list of confusing terms and acronyms about the movie quality. Telecine, workprint, WEBDL... what does it all mean? How can you make sure you end up with a watchable version of the movie you want?

And what about the other definition of movie quality? At the very least, you should always check critics' and cinema-goers' reviews. This will help you avoid the wasted time and bandwidth of downloading bad movies.

Keep reading to learn more about how to check movie quality. We're going to explain what all of the terms mean, and then look at the best sites for checking movie ratings.

Movie Quality Ranking

We begin with the literal quality of movie downloads. We'll work through the various formats in reverse order, starting the worst quality and ending with the highest.

Depending on the site you use, this information can pop up in a few different places. It might be in the file name, in an adjacent information box, or in the NFO file (more on that later). Remember, you can often download the NFO file without downloading the entire movie if you cannot find the information anywhere else.

A workprint is a pre-release version of a movie. It's akin to a first draft in writing terms---it's not a finished product. You might find pre-dubbed sound, placeholders, missing special effects, and other issues.

Cam quality refers to a copy of a movie that someone has created by filming the screen in a movie theater using a recording device. The copies are normally illegal and suffer from low quality. Avoid.

Like cam quality, telesync movies have been illegally recorded in the movie theater itself. However, unlike cam quality, people use professional recording equipment to make the recording. Usually, the recording takes place in the projection booth.

The first semi-decent quality movie format worth downloading is Telecine. They are created using old Telecine machines, which can produce digital copies of movies from analog film reels. The movie quality is slightly worse than DVD thanks to lower-quality source reels.

DVDscr is short for DVD Screener. It is a copy of a DVD that the studio has sent out for promotional purposes. Because it's a copy of a promotional DVD, it will not contain the usual DVD extras such as director's cuts and additional scenes. It might contain serial numbers, counters, and other information on the screen.

SDTV is a copy of a movie that's been created from a TV recording. It is part of a wider TVRip category. Depending on where the recording was made, it will either be in 576i (North America and parts of South America) or 480i (rest of the world) resolution.

Now we are moving onto the best movie quality rankings. DVD copies come in two forms, DVD-Rip and DVD-R.

A DVD-Rip is a final retail version of a movie, but it will not have all the extras that you typically get on a DVD. DVD-R versions are copies of entire DVDs; you will get the extras. As a consequence of the extra material, DVD-R versions of films are often 5GB or more in size.

Read our list of the best tools for ripping DVDs if you would like to learn more.

WEBDL copies of movies have been ripped directly from a streaming service or downloaded from an online digital store like iTunes or Amazon.

To check the quality of a WEBDL movie before downloading it, pay attention to the accompanying resolution information. There are four common WEBDL resolutions: 480p, 720p, 1080p, and 2160p. 480p and 720p are the most common.

As the name suggests, Blu-ray quality movies have been created from Blu-ray discs. Once again, you will come across several different resolutions. They are 480p, 576p, 720p, 1080p, and 2160p. Blu-ray movies in 480p, 576p, and 720p have been manually encoded to a lower resolution than the original source in order to make the file size smaller.

Alongside SDTV, HDTV is the other movie quality format to fall under the TVRip umbrella. The source for an HDTV movie is HD television. Most cable providers will broadcast in 1080p; however, many HDTV movies are encoded to 360p, 540p, or 720p, so are not full HD movie downloads.

A raw-HD movie download uses uncompressed HD footage. The resolution can vary, but the video is completely lossless. Raw-HD recordings typically come from the studio. A resolution indicator might sometimes accompany a Raw-HD download. If there is no resolution indicator, it is often better to select a different format to ensure you get a full HD movie download.

( NB: The exact wording and formatting of the movie quality information will vary from site-to-site. Make sure you fully research a site's terms for movie quality before downloading anything to avoid disappointment.)

Where to Check Movie Ratings

We now move onto the critical quality of movies. And in the world of movie ratings, there are three big sites worth checking: Metacritic, Rotten Tomatoes, and IMDb.

1. Metacritic

Metacritic movie ratings

Metacritic gives each movie a score out of 100 based on an aggregate of scores from dozens of other reviewers, sites, newspapers, and blogs. For each aggregated score, there's a link to the original review so you can read it in full. The scores are also categorized into positive, mixed, and negative. It gives you an easy way to tell whether a couple of outliers have influenced the overall average.

Separate from the critic reviews, Metacritic also has user reviews. When you click on a movie, you can give a score of 1-10 with a single click. Like the critic's reviews, you can see an average of all user scores.

2. Rotten Tomatoes

Rotten Tomatoes movie quality

Rotten Tomatoes uses its "Tomatometer" to let you know whether a movie is worth watching. When at least 60 percent of reviews are positive, a movie gets a red tomato and is considered "Fresh". If the score falls below 60 percent, it gets a green splat and a "Rotten" rating.

The highest accolade is "Certified Fresh". A movie gets that top rating when it scores above 75 percent and has at least five reviews from "Top Critics".

As on Metacritic, audience scores and reviews are also available.

IMDb movie ranking

Lastly, you should check out IMDb. The scores on IMDb are entirely user-generated; every film has a rating out of 10. All you need to do to add your own rating is register on the site.

IMDb typically has the most audience reviews from the three sites, so you can be more confident that the average score you're seeing is representative of the movie's true quality.

More Movie Metadata to Check

Making sure you have a high-quality movie is only half of the battle. There are lots of other bits of movie metadata you also need to keep an eye on if you want to make sure you download the best version of the video for your needs:

  • Date: The date of the movie's original release. Useful in the case of remakes, trilogies, and films that share the same name.
  • Languages: A list of which language audio tracks are available in the download.
  • Subtitles: A list of available subtitles in various languages.
  • Genres: Which category does the movie fall into?
  • JPG: Many movie downloads will include at least one JPG file. It is a screen capture of the movie and helps you to ensure you are grabbing the right file.
  • NFO: An NFO file might contain some of the details we've already discussed, as well as information about the video bitrate, audio bitrate, codecs, screen resolution, and more. You can often download an NFO file separately from the main movie file. You should do so if a movie's resolution is not apparent from the format information.

Beware of Movie Piracy

As should be apparent from reading the article, many of the movie quality formats are most commonly found when downloading pirated material. It's improbable that you will ever stumble across a legitimate cam recording or WEBDL format, for example.

MakeUseOf does not condone piracy. Remember, downloading pirated movies could land you in serious trouble with the authorities. You have been warned.

If you would like to learn more about legally downloading films to watch, make sure you read our article detailing how to download movies and TV shows from Netflix .

Saturday Night Reviews

movie review quality

...the film rests upon the shoulders of LaBelle’s turn as the iconic Lorne Michaels, and much like his stellar work in The Fabelmans, he proves himself to be one of the most engaging, bright young actors we have working today.

Saturday Night is a spectacular blast and Jason Reitman's phenomenally effective tribute to the miracle of crafting live television. I loved every second of this film.

Saturday Night is a whirlwind of a film and a resounding triumph of stellar writing, acting, editing, and directing. It is absolutely hilarious and a thrilling experience.

Sometimes, it feels like a cop-out to say a movie is just “fun” and nothing more, but that is precisely the case here. "Saturday Night" a funny and well-acted piece of entertainment, best enjoyed on a Saturday night.

We go into the movie with high expectations, but only some of them are realized. The cast works hard and brings off some antic moments, but too many of the riffs fall flat.

Saturday Night Live has long swooned over its own self-mythology, and Saturday Night is happy to add to that backpatting as the show’s golden anniversary approaches... At least the second-hand high Reitman hotboxes you with is extremely potent.

movie review quality

There’s another underlying truth here about the creative process: Sometimes, it feels like the whole world is against you. What’s more, sometimes you have to imagine that the whole world is against you in order to get anything meaningful done.

movie review quality

Miraculously, Reitman and casting director John Papsidera pull it off, such that everyone reflects the singular energy of their characters. You might not cast them in the biopic of any one individual, but as an ensemble, they’re terrific.

With a killer ensemble of more than 80 speaking roles... this is a masterful movie comedy firing on all cylinders.

Forget in-jokes or fan service, this is a movie so long on cos-play (much of it brilliant) and short on character development (none of it interesting) that it requires a casual knowledge of the show’s lore to understand, let alone to enjoy.

Vicious Reviews Don't Stop Dennis Quaid from Picking New Movie as His Career Favorite

For the longest time, Dennis Quaid , whose film career spans nearly 50 years, has considered one film experience as his favorite. In a recent MovieWeb interview, the star of the upcoming Reagan biopic said that his role as astronaut Gordon Cooper in 1983’s The Right Stuff always took the No. 1 spot in his heart. Until now.

Quaid plays President Ronald Reagan in his new biopic, which is mostly set in the 1980s. He said playing Reagan made him ponder his experience in 1983’s The Right Stuff, which initially gave him a different measure for ranking his movies. “The experience I had making [films] is very big for me, because I’d watch a movie and I remember what I was doing on that day. [It’s] been The Right Stuff for most of my career, because astronauts were big with me when I was a kid.” He added:

“ I wound up playing my hero, Gordon Cooper, and I got a pilot’s license from that movie , and [co-star] Chuck Yeager was on the set every day and we shot at Edwards Air Force Base. But I have to say, that after 40 years, there's a new movie at the top and that's Reagan , just because of the personal impact on me. Like I said, I have a different perspective than a lot of the other people who watch the movies, because it's personal. And this one has got to take the No. 1 spot now.”

Reagan movie poster with Dennis Quaid

From dusty small-town roots, to the glitter of Hollywood and then on to commanding the world stage, Reagan is a cinematic journey of overcoming the odds. Told through the voice of Viktor Petrovich, a former KGB agent whose life becomes inextricably linked with Ronald Reagan's when Reagan first caught the Soviets’ attention as an actor in Hollywood, this film offers a perspective as unique as it is captivating. Dennis Quaid brings to life a story that transcends the boundaries of a traditional biopic, offering a profound exploration of the enduring impact of the power of one man who overcame the odds, sustained by the love of a woman who supported him in his journey.

Reagan Features an All-Star Cast

As the Reagan trailer reveals, Quaid seamlessly morphs into the 40th President of the United States , a dynamic force in history known for generating short-term economic growth and significant Soviet pushback. The film tracks Reagan’s life, from childhood to his time in the Oval Office. Expect many scenes that were shot exclusively at the famous Reagan Ranch just north of Los Angeles, California.

Quaid in Far from Heaven

Best Dennis Quaid Performances, Ranked

Dennis Quaid has had an acting career that spans more than one generation. These are the best performances over the course of his stellar career.

Directed by Sean McNamara ( Shadrach ) and written by Howard Klausner ( The Secret Handshake ), the film also stars Penelope Ann Miller as Nancy Reagan. “It’s something special,” Quaid noted of his costar’s performance. Also featured in the film are: Mena Suvari as Reagan’s ex-wife Jane Wyman, Jon Voight as Viktor Petrovich, Kevin Dillon ( Entourage ) as movie titan Jack Warner and C. Thomas Howell , who played Ponyboy Curtis in The Outsiders .

In addition to The Right Stuff, Quaid’s long list of standout roles include Breaking Away (1979), Great Balls of Fire (1989) , Far From Heaven (2002) , The Rookie (2002), The Day After Tomorrow (2004), and a fine turn in the recent miniseries Lawmen: Bass Reeves. No doubt Reagan will charm audiences as much as it did Quaid while he was filming it. Reagan hit theaters August 30. Watch our full interview with Quaid below:
