Forty-three University of Missouri students have been awarded MizzouForward Undergraduate Research Training Grants to support their investigations in STEM and National Science Foundation-supported fields and enhance their graduate school applications.

The one-year grants include up to $5,000 per year in salary support for the students. The grants are funded as part of the MizzouForward investment , which includes increased support for undergraduate research.

The candidates were reviewed by 56 MU faculty, and the recipients are rising juniors, juniors or seniors with at least six months of undergraduate research experience in the same lab as their application research project, which must be related to science, technology, engineering and math or an NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program field.

“Many of us have had the experience of falling in love with science and a project and want undergraduates at MU to have the opportunity to have this experience and follow up on the ideas that they develop,” said D Cornelison, a biological sciences professor who worked with Rocío Melissa Rivera, an animal sciences professor, to launch the program. “By working side-by-side, day-by-day with faculty and other lab members, undergraduates get a sense of belonging and contributing to the greater research effort and becoming key players on a research team.

“Our goal is that this support will allow the grantees to spend more of their time on research, enhancing their education and experience while also contributing to their faculty mentors’ success with results that will go into grants and manuscripts, ultimately enhancing the research mission of the University of Missouri.”

Students must submit an external fellowship application within one year of the start of funding and also present their work at appropriate venues at least once during the funding period, among other deliverables.

Student presenting research Sp22 Forum

Research Days

This research showcase happens each fall and spring semester on the last day of classes (day before Reading Day.) We invite poster presentations from students who engaged in a course-based undergraduate research experience, as well as students receiving individual mentorship as part of a program, capstone experience, or honors-by-contract. We encourage students across disciplines and at various points in their projects to present their work in this public venue.

  • Course-based Undergraduate Research : Instructors should email Sarah Humfeld ([email protected]) by October 25 to request participation for students in your course.
  • Individual student researchers : Click here to register for the event. Registration must be received by noon on November 8.
  • Course-based Undergraduate Research : Instructors should email Sarah Humfeld ([email protected]) by April 4 to request participation for students in your course.
  • Individual student researchers : Click here to register for the event. Registration must be received by noon on April 18.

For guidance on poster printing, visit our ‘ How to Design a Research Poster ‘ page. Check our Events page in MU Engage for workshops relating to research communication.

Research & Creative Achievements Forum

The Summer Forum, held at the end of July, is for undergraduate students (visiting and those who call Mizzou home) to present their work. Register here by noon on Monday, July 15.

The Forum is geared towards student research and creative scholarly activities that may be multi-semester projects, senior honors/capstone projects, or other faculty-mentored scholarly activities. Every semester, hundreds of students from a variety of disciplines across campus participate. Projects are typically shared in a ‘display’ format such as a poster. The Forum is not only for STEM students: students in art, humanities and the social sciences are invited and encouraged to present their projects and scholarly activities.

To learn more about what it takes to present at the Forum, visit our “ Applying to the Forum ” page.

Undergraduate visual art & design showcase.

All Mizzou undergraduate students are invited to submit expressive art, applied design, or other creative projects to the Visual Art & Design Showcase . The art/design projects need NOT be class projects, but may be something the student has created on their own. Mentorship from a faculty instructor with expertise in the creative discipline is required, but the mentor does not need to be involved every step of the way. All projects must have a visual element central to the work. The Visual Art & Design Committee will select projects for display as part of the Showcase, and have final approval of projects and display requests.

The 2024 Visual Art & Design Showcase will be both an online exhibition hosted by the MU Libraries and an in-person viewing with projects exhibited in the Columbia Art League April 9th – 20th. The submission deadline for projects will be February 28th, 2024.

These are only a couple of the national conferences available to which students present. Each discipline holds regional, national and international conferences about which we recommend you speak with your mentor. Some offer scholarships, or some form of grant for student presenters.

If you do present at a conference, be sure to inquire about what the poster size should be and any other expectations/parameters that are set. Your mentor should be able to assist you with these.

National Conference on Undergraduate Research (NCUR)

The mission of the National Conference on Undergraduate Research (NCUR) is to promote undergraduate research scholarship and creative activity done in partnership with faculty or other mentors as a vital component of higher education.

Designing a better water filter.

September 16, 2024

Mizzou researcher Maryam Salehi is developing a fabric-like filter to remove tiny plastics and lead from drinking water.

Maryam Salehi and graduate student Anandu Gopakumar Nair investigate filter properties in her lab in Lafferre Hall.

Sept. 16, 2024 Contact: Janese Heavin,  [email protected] Photo by Zac Anderson

Water filters on the market today can remove some contaminants, but they’re not designed to capture microplastocs. In fact, some of them may actually add small plastics into drinking water during the filtration process. What’s worse is these microplastics can cause inflammation, increase the risk of cancer and act as carriers for harmful chemicals that trigger other health problems.

University of Missouri researcher Maryam Salehi and collaborators are coming up with a new way to trap those tiny invaders — and protect the public — through a fabric-like filter.

“The idea is to design a filter that can be attached to a faucet so it can remove microplastic and lead at the same time from tap water,” said Salehi, an assistant professor of civil and environmental engineering . “We’re envisioning an inexpensive point-of-use filter that could connect to any faucet.”

The filter membrane is made from polyvinyl alcohol fibers, which are polymers currently used in biomedical applications. The team chose the material because it’s low-cost and biocompatible, meaning it’s not toxic to humans, animals or plants.

It’s also proving to be effective. In lab tests, the membrane was able to remove nearly 100% of larger microplastics and nearly 80% of the smallest microplastics, while at the same time removing about 70% of lead contamination.

“We still need to test the filter to see how it tolerates other conditions — such as disinfectant use in water — but the idea is to hopefully have something that can be commercialized and used to easily purify tap water,” Salehi said.

The team outlined their findings in a cover article published in Applied Polymer Science. Co-authors were Anandu Gopakumar Nair, a doctoral student at Mizzou, Alexander Ccanccapa, a post-doctoral researcher, and Kati Bell, an industry partner. The work is supported by Brown and Caldwell, as well as the National Science Foundation.

Salehi is a core researcher at the  Missouri Water Center , which brings together stakeholders from academia, industry and government to advance water research.
