Harvard University Theses, Dissertations, and Prize Papers
The Harvard University Archives ’ collection of theses, dissertations, and prize papers document the wide range of academic research undertaken by Harvard students over the course of the University’s history.
Beyond their value as pieces of original research, these collections document the history of American higher education, chronicling both the growth of Harvard as a major research institution as well as the development of numerous academic fields. They are also an important source of biographical information, offering insight into the academic careers of the authors.
Spanning from the ‘theses and quaestiones’ of the 17th and 18th centuries to the current yearly output of student research, they include both the first Harvard Ph.D. dissertation (by William Byerly, Ph.D . 1873) and the dissertation of the first woman to earn a doctorate from Harvard ( Lorna Myrtle Hodgkinson , Ed.D. 1922).
Other highlights include:
- The collection of Mathematical theses, 1782-1839
- The 1895 Ph.D. dissertation of W.E.B. Du Bois, The suppression of the African slave trade in the United States, 1638-1871
- Ph.D. dissertations of astronomer Cecilia Payne-Gaposchkin (Ph.D. 1925) and physicist John Hasbrouck Van Vleck (Ph.D. 1922)
- Undergraduate honors theses of novelist John Updike (A.B. 1954), filmmaker Terrence Malick (A.B. 1966), and U.S. poet laureate Tracy Smith (A.B. 1994)
- Undergraduate prize papers and dissertations of philosophers Ralph Waldo Emerson (A.B. 1821), George Santayana (Ph.D. 1889), and W.V. Quine (Ph.D. 1932)
- Undergraduate honors theses of U.S. President John F. Kennedy (A.B. 1940) and Chief Justice John Roberts (A.B. 1976)

Thesis & Dissertation Aids
Welcome to the Thesis & Dissertations Aids page! In order to effectively begin your writing journey, you will need an APA Style 7th Edition Manual, one of the templates, and the thesis & dissertation checklist.
Templates: These documents serve as models for formatting a journal-ready thesis, a journal-ready dissertation, a journal-ready 3-article dissertation, a traditional (5-chapter) thesis, and a traditional (5-chapter) dissertation and include all formatting required by BYU and the American Psychological Association (7th edition). The templates include formatted heading styles, the formatted Table of Contents, and formatted page numbers, so all you need to do is insert your text, apply styles to each heading, and update the table of contents. Please watch this introductory video to familiarize yourself with the tools available in the template. In addition, much of the instruction you need for writing your thesis or dissertation is in the directions found in each section in the templates.
Some departments will have guidelines for specific parts, so check with them, and all theses and dissertations that include human subjects need to include a copy of the Institutional Review Board (IRB) Letter of Approval to Conduct Research and the stamped IRB consent/assent forms in an appendix.
Download your template from the following list:
- Journal-Ready Thesis Template
- Journal-Ready Dissertation Template
- Journal-Ready 3-Article Dissertation Template
- Traditional (5-Chapter) Thesis Template
- Traditional (5-Chapter) Dissertation Template
- Traditional (5-Chapter) Qualitative Thesis Template
McKay School of Education Checklist for Formats and Conventions of Theses and Dissertations: The checklist describes the important writing and formatting requirements of the MSE and BYU Graduate Studies. Students must submit this completed checklist (electronic or paper) to the MSE dean's office with their thesis/dissertation for approval. The more carefully you review your thesis or dissertation for these items, the faster your submission process will be.
These videos walk through the different sections of formatting your thesis or dissertation. As of Spring/Summer 2024 we are trying to get all of them up. Please let Jena Green know if you need something specific that is not available here yet.
- Title Page: Video
- Abstract & Acknowledgments Pages: Video
- Table of Contents: Video
- List of Tables and List of Figures: Video
For extra support with the writing and formatting requirements, schedule a meeting with Jena Green here and email the section you're working on to [email protected] 2-3 days before your meeting.
MSE Thesis & Dissertation Approval Process: When you have finished your thesis or dissertation, you will need to receive approval from your committee, chair, graduate coordinator, and the dean's office. This flowchart illustrates the approval process. First submit your MS Word document to your committee and chair. When they have all reviewed it, send it to the graduate coordinator. Finally, when the graduate coordinator has reviewed it and you have made all of the corrections from the committee, chair, and graduate coordinator, you or your graduate coordinator will send an updated, clean MS Word final version to [email protected] . This process will take a few back-and-forths to finish. Plan enough time ahead of the submission deadlines to make corrections you will receive from your committee, chair, graduate coordinator, and the MSE dean's office.
Creating and Uploading Your Electronic Thesis and Dissertation (ETD): After making changes from the dean's office, you will convert your MS Word document to a PDF with bookmarks and embed the fonts. This works best with Adobe Acrobat Pro and this video will show you the quickest way to embed fonts. After doing this, send the PDF to [email protected] , and after approval, upload it to the Graduate Progress website. Below are example PDFs to help you see how the bookmarks should appear in your final ETD.

Once your thesis/dissertation has been released for publication on the BYU Scholars Archive website , it will be available for worldwide access. You can search for and download theses/dissertations and faculty publications on this website and access article metrics (e.g., number of downloads).

How to Write a Thesis Statement | 4 Steps & Examples
Published on January 11, 2019 by Shona McCombes . Revised on August 15, 2023 by Eoghan Ryan.
A thesis statement is a sentence that sums up the central point of your paper or essay . It usually comes near the end of your introduction .
Your thesis will look a bit different depending on the type of essay you’re writing. But the thesis statement should always clearly state the main idea you want to get across. Everything else in your essay should relate back to this idea.
You can write your thesis statement by following four simple steps:
- Start with a question
- Write your initial answer
- Develop your answer
- Refine your thesis statement

What is a thesis statement, placement of the thesis statement, step 1: start with a question, step 2: write your initial answer, step 3: develop your answer, step 4: refine your thesis statement, types of thesis statements, other interesting articles, frequently asked questions about thesis statements.
A thesis statement summarizes the central points of your essay. It is a signpost telling the reader what the essay will argue and why.
The best thesis statements are:
- Concise: A good thesis statement is short and sweet—don’t use more words than necessary. State your point clearly and directly in one or two sentences.
- Contentious: Your thesis shouldn’t be a simple statement of fact that everyone already knows. A good thesis statement is a claim that requires further evidence or analysis to back it up.
- Coherent: Everything mentioned in your thesis statement must be supported and explained in the rest of your paper.

The thesis statement generally appears at the end of your essay introduction or research paper introduction .
The spread of the internet has had a world-changing effect, not least on the world of education. The use of the internet in academic contexts and among young people more generally is hotly debated. For many who did not grow up with this technology, its effects seem alarming and potentially harmful. This concern, while understandable, is misguided. The negatives of internet use are outweighed by its many benefits for education: the internet facilitates easier access to information, exposure to different perspectives, and a flexible learning environment for both students and teachers.
You should come up with an initial thesis, sometimes called a working thesis , early in the writing process . As soon as you’ve decided on your essay topic , you need to work out what you want to say about it—a clear thesis will give your essay direction and structure.
You might already have a question in your assignment, but if not, try to come up with your own. What would you like to find out or decide about your topic?
For example, you might ask:
After some initial research, you can formulate a tentative answer to this question. At this stage it can be simple, and it should guide the research process and writing process .
Prevent plagiarism. Run a free check.
Now you need to consider why this is your answer and how you will convince your reader to agree with you. As you read more about your topic and begin writing, your answer should get more detailed.
In your essay about the internet and education, the thesis states your position and sketches out the key arguments you’ll use to support it.
The negatives of internet use are outweighed by its many benefits for education because it facilitates easier access to information.
In your essay about braille, the thesis statement summarizes the key historical development that you’ll explain.
The invention of braille in the 19th century transformed the lives of blind people, allowing them to participate more actively in public life.
A strong thesis statement should tell the reader:
- Why you hold this position
- What they’ll learn from your essay
- The key points of your argument or narrative
The final thesis statement doesn’t just state your position, but summarizes your overall argument or the entire topic you’re going to explain. To strengthen a weak thesis statement, it can help to consider the broader context of your topic.
These examples are more specific and show that you’ll explore your topic in depth.
Your thesis statement should match the goals of your essay, which vary depending on the type of essay you’re writing:
- In an argumentative essay , your thesis statement should take a strong position. Your aim in the essay is to convince your reader of this thesis based on evidence and logical reasoning.
- In an expository essay , you’ll aim to explain the facts of a topic or process. Your thesis statement doesn’t have to include a strong opinion in this case, but it should clearly state the central point you want to make, and mention the key elements you’ll explain.

A thesis statement is a sentence that sums up the central point of your paper or essay . Everything else you write should relate to this key idea.
The thesis statement is essential in any academic essay or research paper for two main reasons:
- It gives your writing direction and focus.
- It gives the reader a concise summary of your main point.
Without a clear thesis statement, an essay can end up rambling and unfocused, leaving your reader unsure of exactly what you want to say.
Follow these four steps to come up with a thesis statement :
- Ask a question about your topic .
- Write your initial answer.
- Develop your answer by including reasons.
- Refine your answer, adding more detail and nuance.
The thesis statement should be placed at the end of your essay introduction .

Honors Thesis Spotlight: How Collegiate Civics Education Impacts Youth Voter Participation
Published: December 1, 2021 | 2:54 pm
This content originally appeared on COSSPP’s Wicked Problems, Wicked Solutions Blog and is the work of the individual authors sharing their research, expertise, and experience and do not necessarily reflect the opinions or positions of the College of Social Sciences and Public Policy, Florida State University, or any other agency, institution, or entity.
Research shows that in order for people to understand and engage with political issues, they need to first understand the political system and be encouraged to participate in politics. To sow the seeds of civic participation, there is an increased prioritization on implementing civics courses and exams at the middle school, high school, and recently, the college level. House Bill 7069 is a 2017 law that requires students at Florida public colleges and universities to complete a civic literacy course or pass a civics assessment. Since Florida implemented this bill before the 2018 midterm elections, this thesis studies the effect of this law on college and non-college counties, referring to the presence or absence of public universities in the county. Comparing voter turnout in these counties allows the author to investigate the impact of required college-level civics education on voter participation.
The author of this thesis uses the voting history of registered voters in Florida from 2006 to 2018, obtained from the Florida Voter Registration and Voting History Extract File. They first run a multivariate regression analysis to study how age impacts voter turnout. Next, they group the 2006, 2010, and 2014 midterm elections together while keeping the 2018 midterm election separate. This lets the author study turnout trends before and after the implementation of the 2017 law. The author then finds the effect of age on voter turnout using the results from the previous regressions. They also study the difference in turnout between counties that have public universities (“college counties”) and those that do not (“non-college counties”).
The results of the tests show that in college counties, younger voters turned out more in the 2018 midterms than in the 2006, 2010, and 2014 midterms. While this is promising, the author recognizes several alternate explanations that may explain this change. In order to investigate more, the author re-runs tests that exclude college-aged voters to see if this effect is due to college-aged voters. Since the tests showed no difference between college and non-college counties in 2018, the author suggests that the effect of younger voters is attributed to college-aged voters. Ultimately, they believe that college-aged voters in college counties affected the 2018 midterms experiencing younger voters. Furthermore, they believe the civic literacy requirement positively influences voter participation.
The author points to several limitations of the study. While they found college counties to have significantly greater amounts of voters participate in the 2018 midterms, they highlight an overall trend of increased voter participation among younger people both in college and non-college counties. However, they conclude that civics education emphasized the importance of voting, which explains why there was significantly more voter participation in college counties. Other limitations include the demographic of college-aged voters; the author explains that since college-aged voters lean towards being Democratic, and 2018 experienced a surge in Democratic voters turning out to vote, this may explain the rise in college-aged voters in 2018. The author also highlights two highly publicized issues in the 2018 Florida midterms: an amendment that pertains to felon voting rights as well as the rise in activism regarding gun violence after a shooting in a South Florida high school. Furthermore, the author points to factors such as the midterms being soon after the implementation of the bill and that some college students are registered to vote in non-college counties. They conclude that these factors are not significant enough to change the findings of the tests. Nonetheless, the author does not believe that the findings are sufficient enough to argue that the civic literacy requirements for public universities in Florida directly increase the turnout of college voters. The author suggests for future studies to conduct an experimental test to determine how civics education influences voter turnout.

Honors Undergraduate Thesis
Honors Undergraduate Thesis (HUT) is UCF's most advanced undergraduate research program. It is designed to assist juniors and seniors to develop their own independent research project under the direction of a thesis advisor and faculty thesis committee. Students do not need to be Honors students to take advantage of the HUT program; it is available to all qualified UCF students. Over two to four semesters, students work closely with a faculty committee to research, write, defend, and publish an original thesis that serves as an honors capstone product of their undergraduate career. This thesis is published through the university library, UCF's STARS Repository , and is available to researchers worldwide through electronic databases.
The Burnett Honors College partners with all colleges in sponsoring HUT Scholarships. These $1,000 scholarships are awarded every fall and spring on a competitive basis within each college and are available to all students who are enrolled in HUT credit hours.
- Visit The Burnett Honors College Honors in Undergraduate Thesis for additional information including deadlines.
- Join our Facebook group.
- Contact Dr. Sherron Killingsworth Roberts for additional information.
- Learn about the benefits of participating in HUT.
- First, find out if you are eligible and meet the basic requirements by visiting the Honors Undergraduate Thesis admissions page. If you have questions or you almost meet the requirements, stop in and see the great folks in the Office of Honors Research (OHR), now relocated in Trevor Colbourn Hall, Suite 248 (Phone: 407-823-0851). Email [email protected] with any questions. The HUT Coordinator will help you (1) apply for the Honors Undergraduate Thesis program and then (2) help get you registered. Remember you will be taking the Honors in Undergraduate Thesis project credit hours in the following semesters. You need a minimum of two semesters to complete the program. Additionally Dr. Padmini Coopamah Waldron, Director, is a valuable resource to your thesis chair and you.
- You will need to gain the permission of a professor to serve as your thesis chair and work with you weekly as part of an independent study or Directed Readings . By the end of the semester of Directed Readings, you should have a 15-20 page proposal (with 15-20 references) outlining the Honors in Undergraduate Thesis project that is approved by your thesis chair, a committee of one additional person, and the Honors in Undergraduate Thesis Coordinator, Dr. Sherron Roberts . If you need help identifying a chair, Dr. Roberts can help.
- Obtain all the necessary signatures on your application form and get the ball rolling. Even though you can now use HelloSign to obtain your chair's and Dr. Robert's signature electronically, please go introduce yourself to Dr. Roberts (ED 315T) in person, and seek her help to get started. Congrats!

In the context of education and specifically in teacher education, the idea also has a long history. As Whitty and Willmott (Citation 1991) point out, 'competence-based and performance-based approaches to teacher education are by no means new' (p. 309). Competence was a goal of teacher education in the US from the 1970s.
