Genius movie review: After a while, the plot turns mind-numbing
Cast: Utkarsh Sharma, Ishitha Chauhan, Mithun Chakraborty, Ayesha Jhulka, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, K.K. Raina Director: Anil Sharma
An orphan, whose parents get killed in communal riots, is raised by a brahmin who lives at an ashram in Mathura, cracks IIT with distinction, and therefore, is a brilliant mind, is offered a key job by the RAW, and seems to be the perfect young lad whom girls swoon over and guys admire. Although pretty young, he seems to be the sharpest at RAW, where as an ethical hacker, he has nearly all his seniors gaping wide-mouthed at his jaw-dropping capabilities.
Quite naturally, he wears loads of attitude on his sleeve, though he also has a heart of gold. Notwithstanding his aplomb and dare-me attitude, a young girl Nandini (Ishitha Chauhan) gets attracted to him in college, and swears undying love for him. In short, there is nothing that he doesn’t have, or cannot achieve!
With everything going perfect for him, there has to be something that awaits his nod, for him to get into trouble. You guessed it right: He has a greater mission at hand, and, as the RAW in-charge, leads a team.
Even as everything goes well, fate has other plans laid out for his future: He is burdened by the killing of his entire team while on an assignment. His world comes crashing down, and an inquiry ensues. But until he doesn’t avenge their death, he can’t live in peace with his love. So he hatches a genius plan.
In the midst of all the dramatic turn of events, we are also informed of his being a great desh bhakt. With almost every conceivable frill that would ensure a certain course of direction and an objective on the part of director Anil Sharma (whose earlier works include the jingoistic Gadar, Elaan-E-Jung) you almost second guess which way the film is headed.
IIT topper Vasudev Shastri (Utkarsh Sharma) whose entry into the engineering college is a breeze, rubs the second ranker, Nandini, the wrong way on the very first day of college. As they cross paths intermittently, Nandini finds him to be beneath her dignity, only to fall head over heels in love.
Later, as a team working on some of the most top-secret tasks with RAW, Vasu suffers a setback and becomes a victim of tinnitus after a physically challenging mission in Porbandar leaves him somewhat disabled. He has to endure a serious underlying medical condition due to damage to the inner ear that leads to high decibel levels of hearing. Doctors pronounce him getting close to becoming brain dead too. He survives multiple bullet wounds during a high-level mission as the head of a division of RAW named TOCSI. The agency’s primary aim is to track MRS (Nawazuddin Siddiqui), a dreaded Islamist terrorist who works closely with the ISI. Together with Pakistan, MRS is determined to plant bombs in India, and make the lives of Indians miserable.
The aforementioned details of the plot may give you an idea of the film being very authentic and qualitatively superior. You may have seen juvenile plots converted into watchable fare on screen only for their great production values and believable acting skills of actors. Not in Genius. Here, you cannot ignore its gratuitous jingoistic flavour, shoddy CGI, poor production qualities and some jejune writing. Anil Sharma’s son Utkarsh in the lead will have to start from scratch to learn the basic in acting if he is serious about a career in films. His co-star Ishitha is even worse. For her, a crash course in acting will not even do the needful!

Genius Movie Review
Behind the Movie Genius: TV Anchor Omkar has turned into Director with this Chinni Krishna's story which has Paruchuri Bros penned the dialogues. Havish who shot to fame with 'Nuvvvila' is seen as hero while Sanusha of 'Bangaram' is the heroine. Let us see, how far Omkar stood as a genius in making this project?
In the Movie Genius: Nivas (Havish), Yasir (Ashwin) and Shiva (Vinod) are childhood friends. While Nivas loves a cute Siri (Sanusha), Shiva is loved by Simran (Abhinaya), sister of Yasir. Confusions begin among audience when, Nivas and his father Simhadri (Suman) are attacked by the goons of local MLA Nanaji (Pradeep Rawat). Into the next fold, Yasir is a Fan to cricketer Nizamuddin (Adarsh) who is in CBI custody on match fixing allegations while Shiva is hardcore Fan to cinema hero Pedda Babu (Ashish Vidyarthi) and his son Chinna Babu (Master Bharath).
Story gets much more confused when Yasir is killed, Nizamuddin is kidnapped and Shiva is killed, Pedda Babu is kidnapped from the 100 days movie function of Chinna Babu. Home Minister JP (Jayaprakash Reddy) ropes in Police Officer Sharath Chandra (Sharath Kumar) to solve this kidnapping mystery. Just before interval, even Nivas attempts to kill Nanaji but gets caught by Sharath Chandra. Into the live interrogation, Nivas narrates the flashback on how his weaknesses towards politics, Shiva's craze towards Pedda Babu and Yasir's admiration for Nizamuddin spoiled their lives. What kind of a lesson does they want to teach their mentors form the rest.
Values of the Movie Genius: Into the very first attempt as a director, Omkar picked a meaningful and message orineted storyline (do not indulge in human worship) of Chinni Krishna which requires strong conviction in narration. Screenplay of Vissu was the main culprit which ruined the actual flavor. However, Omkar tried to project himself as a star commercial director who can handle the depth in emotions. But, he could not deliver the goods. Dialogues by Paruchuri Brothers were good in second half. Cinematography by Diwakaran Raghunath was apt with mass masala touch. MR Varma's editing could have been far better in first half. Dileep Subbarayan's stunts composition was good. Music by Joshua Sridhar was noisy. Production values of Dasari Kiran Kumar and Ramadoota Creations were really good.
Performance wise Havish could not emote any expression with a crude face. He needs to undergo rigorous training to evolve as a better artist. Sanusha was pretty. Ashwin, Vinod did their parts well. Sharath Kumar was crisp and powerful. Suman, Chandramohan, Kota, Annapoorna, Abhinaya, Thaagubothu Ramesh were good as family members to the lead three. Pradeep Rawat's villainy is routine. Adarsh, Ashish Vidyarthi, Master Bharath, Jayaprakash Reddy were also okay. Brahmi's silly acts as participant in Aata 7 were not needed for this story.
Out of the Movie Genius: Those who have doubts on Omkar's abilities as a movie director would remain confused with same doubts because he was neither a complete failure nor a complete winner with this film. Thanks to Chinni Krishna's storyline which has strength in it but dud not find the right support from screenplay writer Vissu and director Omkar. The boring execution in first half with confusing sub plots and seperate comedy track of Brahmanandam were disappointing from Omkar. Into the second half, real story picks up and the exact message comes to fore. Havish was far better here. Into pre-climax and climax, there is plenty of action which bored again.
However, Omkar's confidence has exceeded the needed limits while his handling of emotions in crucial scenes still needs to be polished. With such a high budget and purposeful storyline, definitely 'Genius' could have been a useful project at BO. It is surely, Omkar's inexperience which killed the essence in Chinni's story. Commercial success of 'Genius' is doubtful.
Cinejosh Review of the Movie Genius: Better Execution Could Have Made Omkar, a Cinema Genius.

Genius Movie Review: A Single-Mindedly Delusional Film
Director: Anil Sharma
Cast: Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Utkarsh Sharma, Ishita Chauhan, Mithun Chakraborty, Ayesha Jhulka
Spoilers Ahead…
You know how, as children, we get invited to that rich classmate's swanky birthday party by his parents who are worried he has no friends? You know how we go reluctantly, knowing that they will make their enthusiastic kid show off his foreign toys and half-baked dancing talents on stage while they might be the only ones clapping? You know how the "party" goes on till midnight because this is possibly the biggest event of their social calendar? You know how they threaten to invite us to the same thing again next year?
Anil Sharma's 165-minute-long Genius , starring his son Utkarsh Sharma, is the adult equivalent of this experience. This is not a film; it is an expensive display of affection by an indulgent father towards his son. On a human level, a man introducing his boy to the world "in and as Genius" is sweet, if a little immodest. It should ideally be none of our business. But in India, nothing is private; emotions aren't real if others don't notice it. That's the problem with nepotism in cinema – it becomes our business, because we are expected to pay to be entertained by families celebrating their personal milestones and induction ceremonies.
It becomes our business when the show is so incompetent and so single-mindedly delusional that the only takeaways are its blatant xenophobia, and Mithun Chakraborty and Nawazuddin Siddiqui competing with one another to butcher the title ("Genie-yus," "Jean-yas") in unimaginable ways. It becomes our business when we are expected to tolerate and overlook the mandatory 'paycheck' films of actors like Siddiqui; he goes to great lengths in this one – including, wait for it, dancing in a club. Manto better be worth this humiliation.
To put in mildly, Genius has the IQ of Sunny Deol's right bicep in Gadar: Ek Prem Katha . How directors like Anil Sharma go from competing with Lagaan to this – I mean, how do you forget the basics of storytelling? – will forever remain a mystery.
To put it mildly, Genius has the IQ of Sunny Deol's right bicep in Gadar: Ek Prem Katha . How directors like Anil Sharma go from competing with Lagaan to this – I mean, how do you forget the basics of storytelling? – will forever remain a mystery. Genius revolves around an orphan named Vasudev Shastri who is brought up by the Pandits of Mathura. The pious Hindu hero greets everyone with a 'Radhe Radhe,' breezes into IIT Roorkee and is recruited by RAW to head their TOCSI wing (team of crime and special investigation – otherwise known as the 'costume worn by the birthday boy'). Numbers jump out of the screen when he thinks, and tears stream down his cheeks with the heightened sounds of a slug being burnt alive.
A Porbandar mission goes wrong, his dream team is killed, and a crippled Shastri heads to Lakshadweep (otherwise known as Mauritius) to be rehabilitated by his girlfriend and brood to Himmesh Reshammiya's ear-splitting music. We see flashbacks of his 'carefree' days at IIT, which looks like a Prem-Aggan version of Riverdale. We see the way he fell in love with a girl who calls him a "primitive small towner," mocks his heritage and tries to drug him on the eve of the final exams so that she can top the college. He declares that if she can be so ruthless and 'strong headed' for her career, she will be even more committed in love. So far, so hood.
We also see why RAW wanted him – with a scene that has him stroll into the tech wing, foil a cyber attack on the servers by not "breaking the binary code" but rebooting the system and then asking for a glass of milk. But now RAW, headed by national security advisor Jayshankar Prasad (Chakraborty), a pious Hindu patriot, is after him. Prasad has this wordless assistant played by ex-Roadies participant Sonel Singh, whose sole job is to flank him and look tense. She existed for this purpose even in Jolly LLB alongside Boman Irani – a factoid that makes her Hindi cinema's specialist secretary for all seasons.
Also after Shastri is a terrorist named MRS (Siddiqui), who dresses like an Italian gangster that stood last in his own look-alike contest – a man who mocks 'deshbhakti,' mocks launch vehicles and considers himself to be the 1-number genius in the country.
Also after Shastri is a terrorist named MRS (Siddiqui), who dresses like an Italian gangster that stood last in his own look-alike contest – a man who mocks 'deshbhakti,' mocks launch vehicles and considers himself to be the 1-number genius in the country. His religion is self-explanatory. He hates Prasad and Shastri and Vrindavan. And he is obviously in cahoots with Pakistan and the ISI head. "The heart should be made the national sport," he says, before adding: "Because everyone plays with it."
To give you an idea of what he is up against, there's a long action sequence that has Shastri throwing away his crutches, leaping across Lakshwadeep streets, dodging buses and bikes, riding a cycle down multiple staircases and almost killing himself – all in pursuit of a minister's car. You wonder if he has seen an old villain. He then smashes up the commandos to reach the car. With everyone's eyes on him, and the minister shocked with this violence, he yells, "tiranga ulta hai, yaar". The flag is upside down. He restores the flag on the windshield to its (far-right) position, while the town looks at him with pride.
Needless to mention, Genius ends with Hindu devotional anthems as the background score. It's too late by the time we realize that our classmate's lame party was in fact at a Brahmin temple in 2002. And that the orange robes weren't part of a fancy-dress competition.

Genius Movie Review: Utkarsh Sharma's Debut Film Is Anything But 'Genius'!
There's a dialogue in the film which goes like, 'dil se main khelta nahin, aur dimaag se khelne deta nahin.' sadly, neither genius succeeds over winning your hearts nor it's food for your grey cells., recommended video.
'Yahan sauda nahin, sanskaar hote hain aur woh bhi antim,' as Utkarsh Sharma's character Vaasu tries to intimidate a traitor officer into commiting suicide by telling him these lines, you find yourself chuckling with laughter instead. Wait, there are many such moments in Genius, which simply make you wonder why this film even existed in the first place! Trust me, you need to be a real 'genius' to sit through the tacky dialogues, which are dropped like bombs throughout the film.
Genius begins with a botched mission in Porbandar that leaves RAW special agent Vasudev aka Vasu Shastri (Utkarsh Sharma) crippled. But, the man still has patriotism running in his veins, so much so that he even chases a speeding convoy on a bicycle with a limping foot to correct an upside down tricolor on a politician's car. After being labelled 'incompetent' by his seniors, Vasu decides to take the matter in his own hands and complete his unfinished mission.
But before that, the film goes flashback and drops us into the IIT campus because hello, our hero is supposed to be a genius, right? So, he needs to be a part of one of the prestigious institutes of the country. Meanwhile, all those boys who grouse over the lack of love life in engineering colleges, Genius is here to shatter the myth. It's love at first sight for Utkarsh when his eyes meet that of Nandini (Ishita Chauhan). He begins his prem-leela to woo the leading lady. But sorry, hard luck bro! With his heart broken by the woman of his dreams, Vasu finally decides to join RAW. Little is he aware that his life is set to take a drastic turn with the entry of his nemesis MRS (Nawazuddin Siddiqui) who too considers himself a genius, but a mad one.
While Anil Sharma's Genius may sound thrilling on paper, it is reduced to mockery when translated on screen. Remember how Abbas-Mustan went wrong with 'Machine'? Anil's latest directorial venture too falls in the same trap. The plot is devoid of logic and the screenplay wobbles throughout the film. The director tries to pack in too many elements in this potboiler. But, none of them strike a chord. The over-the-top dialogues add more to the mess.
Utkarsh Sharma's launch pad turns out to be a damp squib with its messy plot. The young lad's shoulders ain't sturdy enough to carry the burden of this mess. Right from solving a Ribik cube to deactivating a bomb to chanting vedic mantras and pumping bullets, he is our own version of Superman! Ishika Chauhan adds just to the glam quotient. It's disheartening to watch a talent like Nawazuddin Siddiqui hamming to his fullest. The actor looks as confused as the audience. Mithun Chakraborty and Ayesha Jhulka suffer from underwritten roles.
Thankfully, when the acting and direction fails, the picturesque locations are at least appealing to the eyes. Genius has some good music but the songs have been misplaced and act merely as fillers.
There's a dialogue in the film which goes like, 'Dil Se Main Khelta Nahin, Aur Dimaag Se Khelne Deta Nahin.' Sadly, neither Genius succeeds over winning your hearts nor it's food for your grey cells. Stay away from this fare to keep your sanity intact. I am going with one star.
