May I provide a Chinese translation or get a way to translate it into Chinese?

This is a really great game if you want to develop a 2D platformer and save a lot of time testing out player movement! I am a Unity game developer in Taiwan and would like to share this game with others and my classmates.

made the most rage platformer hehe

Really cool toolkit

best game ever

i made it pizza tower

map 3ditor ???

I think this is a really good tutorial how to making a platformer. I am a bit annoyed of the fact that the information that I can skip the explanation with P showed up almost at the end of the tutorial. I don't know for what I should disable Screen Shake. It would be really cool if more things like enemies or a level builder gets added. I already know most of the values, but having a toolkit were you can see you adjustments instantly is a lot more cool.

Thank you for this cool project!!!

fun fact: it helped me with platformer i'm making

I love this!

Great idea and well made. I think I found a bug: the spring platform is affected by the variable jump cuttoff. Turn the jump cutoff slider all the way up and the spring barely gives you any height.

Happy creating! 🚀🕹️

Are the scripts free to use in our games?

super informative as a very very beginner to learn the basic concepts of a platformer, thank you!

Really great tool. I enjoyed it and learned something new.

However there are a few bugs. For example the deceleration gets overwritten by the turning speed. If you try to move into the opposite direction and your turning speed is 0 you will keep sliding in the wrong direction even if the deceleration is high and you would instantly come to a stand still if you just released the button.

This is really useful. I'll definitely learn much from it. I did notice that if the Deceleration slider is too far to the right the Instant Movement and Run Speed toggle gets covered by some invisible barrier, so you can no longer click it.

The game is really cool

Making this feel right felt so simple and yet I felt so accomplished getting it to where it felt like the character actually belonged in the environments! I'm just learning how to build games so this really helped me get an idea of all the sorts of things that go into making a game really feel polished!

Rate my build:

Run: speed - 9; acceleration - 40; deceleration - 70; turn speed - 77;

Jump: height - 3.5; duration - 2.5; down gravity - 2; air acceleration - 35; air control - 60; air brake - 70;

Camera: zoom - 8; damping X - 0.5; damping Y - 1.5; lookahead - 0.5; ignore jumps - on;

Assists: coyote time - 0.1; jump buffer - 0.2; terminal velocity - 20; rounded corners - on.

for jumping, are double jump and/or variable height on?

without the other customizations like juice and what I said,  I will have to give it a 6/10

Can you make this into a Godot addon please?

Silly question, but.... in the demo above, how do I unlock the locks? I can't find the key.

It unlocks as you progress through the video essay(bottom right button)

Sometimes when I hold the arrow keys and do a Double Jump , I can't double jump and fall down on spikes, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Amazing tool btw !!

This is really helpful for making platformer characters, thanks!

I noticed that there were presets for Mario, Sonic, Super Meat Boy, and Celeste, but no Mega Man, Kirby, Castlevania, or Ghosts and Goblins?

Please do a Mega Man preset

The Super Mario preset isn't right.  It doesn't have any jump cutoff set so the variable height jump doesn't work.  Also the max jump is set too low: Mario should jump 5 tiles by default, 6 if he's moving.  Movement affecting jump height is another variable to consider.

I think you should have given Celeste a double-jump, considering how important the air-dash is to the game.

There's an "Instant Movement" checkbox that isn't interactible.

Btw, here's my build:

Running: Max Speed: 8.  Max acceleration, deceleration, turn speed.

Jumping: Jump Height: 5,  Jump Duration: 3, Jump Cutoff: 3, Max air control, air acceleration, air brake.

Camera: Zoom: 5, Ignore Jumps.  I set look-ahead to max and damping to 1 but I could have more look-ahead but the damping cancels it out, but I want more damping because I don't like the quick camera movements when it switches the look-ahead on and off.

if you have deceleration all the way to max, clicking the instant movement box makes it think that you are clicking the deceleration slider

:D tht was fun

I went through every part 5 times once with each character setting and 1 for my own, it was very very hard, but fun. if you are curious at first, I thought that sonic would be the hardest (I've never played Celeste) but man was I wrong!

Mark brown’s platformer toolkit, playable essay on platformer game design, hits 100k downloads, published by evgeny obedkov.

Mark Brown, creator of the Game Maker’s Toolkit blog, has announced that his latest project Platformer Toolkit has reached a new milestone. It is an interactive video essay where the player has to fix a bad platformer.

game maker essay

Brown shared the news on Twitter , saying that Platformer Toolkit has generated over 100k downloads / browser plays so far. It took the project a little over two months to reach such a milestone.

Hey! Platformer Toolkit has had 100,000 downloads/browser plays. Thanks for checking out my weird, experimental interactive video essay thing! https://t.co/0vCPdvKJg5 pic.twitter.com/rE98Agxkfg — Game Maker’s Toolkit (@gamemakerstk) September 5, 2022

Platformer Toolkit is an experimental video essay on platformer game design, which was built with Unity and released on itch.io (available for free). The player controls a character named Kit and has to change her speed, jump height, and other settings using an interactive toolkit.

The goal is to fix the bad movement and see how different options could affect the platforming gameplay and overall feel. Platformer Toolkit also contains Brown’s explanations of different mechanics and settings, so the project serves as not only a fun mini game but also as a great interactive lecture on the basic design principles of platform games.

Mark Brown is a game journalist, who is best known for his Game Maker’s Toolkit blog on YouTube. Right now, he is also working on his debut game, a 2D platformer about a robot solving puzzles with a magnet.

One of the best roguelikes ever is finally getting an online multiplayer mode, 10 hardest bosses in black myth: wukong, ranked by difficulty.

An interactive tutorial known as  Platformer Toolkit  has been revealed via YouTube and presents a free PC game that teaches players how to make a game. As the means of game development become more accessible, experienced developers have utilized a variety of methods to share their experiences with other aspiring designers. YouTube, for example, has become a place of information for those willing to learn and analyze video game design .

Over the past few years, there have been many strides taken by both gaming companies and communities in allowing easier public access to the tools and knowledge necessary for game development. Gaming engines like Unreal and Unity have been made freely available by their publishers, providing would-be developers a firm foundation to build their games upon. On the community side of things, several YouTube videos by experienced developers and game theorists in the community cover a variety of subjects ranging from in-depth tutorials on how to create games to analyzing design choices. Some have even created an assortment of tools and assets for others to use in their projects. Even the platform of user-generated content games like  Super Mario Maker 2  has allowed millions  to experience a taste of game development.

Related:  Super Mario Maker 2 Players Have Uploaded More Than 26 Million Levels

Video game journalist and creator of YouTube channel  Game Maker’s Toolkit , Mark Brown, has contributed to amateur game development by creating an interactive essay entitled  Platformer Toolkit . In  Platformer Toolkit , players control Kit, an avatar plagued by noticeably bad control design like delayed jumps and awkward acceleration. After a brief hands-on with Kit's controls, players can access the Toolkit—an intrinsic set of toolbars and widgets that adjust almost every variable of Kit’s performance. Players begin by adjusting Kit's run speed and acceleration, after which they receive new tools as they progress through the essay. The complete Toolkit allows access to over 30 options for adjusting gameplay mechanics like Kit's jump height, camera positioning, jump buffering, and even visual effects. After adjusting Kit to an acceptable level of play, players can take her through a full platforming stage which, upon completion, will reward players with a few extra goodies. The Platformer Toolkit download is currently available for Windows and Mac at the  GMTK  official website, or can be played directly from an internet browser.

As user-generated content titles like  Super Mario Maker  can attest, 'game creation' games are not wholly an original concept. However,  Platformer Toolkit  succeeds in teaching a concept that often can’t be explored by these types of titles: game-feel. As the goal of  Platformer Toolkit  is for players to adjust Kit’s performance until it ‘feels’ right to them, it naturally conveys the importance of this esoteric concept. Since most UGC games are ready-made game systems in which players organize assets to simulate an experience , players won't be able to learn why  Super Mario  games feel so fun to play under such restrictions. But with Kit, players can learn merely from their interactions with her what tangible effects even the most minute adjustment can have on an experience.

For many years, Mark Brown has dedicated Game Maker Toolkit to providing in-depth analysis of game design choices made in several titles. With  Platformer Toolkit , GMTK has put its theories into a tangible interactive format for viewers and potential game developers. With so few tools able to practically convey a concept as important as game-feel,  Platformer Toolkit   may be just the tool for the job.

“ It is an excellent way to help students to associate the video games concepts ”

I lived a great experience when I guided my students step by step, through the tutorials, discovering G Develop: to see their faces of surprises when the objects began to move, jump, follow instructions... With this software is easy create objects, players, platforms, animations. It is an excellent way to help students to associate the video games concepts and the practical.

“ The Easiest Way To Start Game Developing ”

As someone who had no experience creating games other than some simple coding on Minecraft, GDevelop made it easy for me to jump in and try it out. I did have to watch some tutorials on YouTube, but after those, I was able to animate and code my own simple platformer, and my students were able to see it as well!

“ A Fun Way to Start Coding! ”

GDevelop has been a blast to use both as a teacher, and as a gamer! I've played games a lot in my own personal time, and run a Minecraft coding club with my 3rd graders, so GDevelop was fun and exciting addition to that! The students were so excited to see what could be made, and putting them in was easy with the sprite designer! Great fun, and easy to get into!

game maker essay

  • broad range of available bonus content
  • for most makers are either default or user made character generators available
  • requests get usually fulfilled if they are reasonable
  • the flavour of your game is limited to what can be displayed with the default style
  • as most people know the default graphics, you might need invest some collecting end editing to come up with a nice look that doesn’t look like everyone else’s game

game maker essay

  • These styles are usually made with a lot of care, people create the things they really wanted to make
  • Sometimes the artist is still around and willing to expand the style if there is enough interest
  • Some of the styles are discontinued and not finished, you might have to put in some work to get everything you need
  • The terms of course differ from style to style, so it might be possible that you have a hard time finding people helping you with the resources if for example editing and posting of edits are not allowed
  • With a style at hand, it is usually easier to communicate what you exactly need
  • Due to the amount of references, it is easier to find an artist
  • If your budget is limited, you are still restricted in some areas. You cannot expect to get full tile sheets for a quick buck and getting all the graphics for a character can already eat a lot of your savings.

game maker essay

  • Given that the creators expect you to pay money for their stuff and that they had to pass Degica’s quality control, you can expect a certain level of expertise was used to create them
  • If a pack is successful, there might be even more expansions in the same style by the same artist
  • The packs are made to be “round” and finished, so you can expect e.g. enough tiles to map a certain area
  • It is very difficult to find someone who helps you with requests for free, as the pack resources may only be edited by people who own the pack and results cannot be posted or shared otherwise
  • Therefore, you might have to commission an artist to make additions from scratch, if you lack something
  • You get whatever you need
  • You can provide style references for everything
  • Your game will look very unique
  • This definitely is expensive
  • A lot of freedom in what you display and how
  • You game will be unique in every aspect
  • You will need a fortune and very motivated artists with enough time on their hands
  • Chibi chars and super serious games can be a problem
  • a fun and joyful game can feel off if you use gritty and dark tiles
  • Retro can be difficult to put that much details on your map
  • a hyper realistic style could look weird in combination with some sorts of puzzles

EVXA

You covered most of the important stuff very well, suggesting additional art hacks/editing tips would go along way to also helping people with these too. The Game Engine is an important factor as well with it's own cons/pros too. I've many different free to use community tile types in my commercial steam game "Gears of Phantasm". However I could easily resize & then downscale both MV & MZ assets to fit "VX ACE" while keeping a close enough art style. That said upscaling older art is easier than ever if you want to port VX stuff. The big con's "VX Ace" has a lot of outdated hardcoded limits on it's engine. Commercial success from your rpgmaker game is another factor to consider. I've not had any luck so far, I think style/genre of a game matters very much. As well as production quality, & if your budget is tied to how much you think you'll end up making then you can't go all in out-pacing your own profit gain. Far as what style of graphics vibe I wanted in it, to pack as much detail for each of those tiny squares as possible, while using filtering tricks giving the looks of it being as dynamic as possible feeling almost alive in a sense, which did work. Hence why I choose to use the animated water tiles that'll move, as grass tiles.

Easily Cite References

game maker essay

Our essay generator makes citing references in MLA and APA styles for web sources and references an easy task. The essay writer works by first identifying the primary elements in each source, such as the author, title, publication date, and URL, and then organizing them in the correct format required by the chosen citation style. This ensures that the references are accurate, complete, and consistent. The product provides helpful tools to generate citations and bibliographies in the appropriate style, making it easier for you to document your sources and avoid plagiarism. Whether you’re a student or a professional writer, our essay generator saves you time and effort in the citation process, allowing you to focus on the content of your work.

Produce Better Essays than ChatGPT

Our essay generator is designed to produce the best possible essays, with several tools available to assist in improving the essay, such as editing outlines, title improvements, tips and tricks, length control, and AI-assisted research. Unlike ChatGPT, our AI writer can find sources and assist in researching for the essay, which ensures that the essay is backed by credible and relevant information. Our essay generator offers editing assistance and outlines to improve the structure and flow of the essay. This feature is especially useful for students who may struggle with essay organization and require guidance on how to present their ideas coherently. Another advantage of our AI essay writer over ChatGPT is that it is designed explicitly for essay writing, ensuring that the output is of high quality and meets the expectations of the instructor or professor. While ChatGPT may be able to generate essays, there is no guarantee that the content will be relevant, accurate or meet the requirements of the assignment.

Easily Avoid Plagiarism

Our AI generated essays are 100% unique and plagiarism free. Worried about AI detection? Worry no more, use our AI Detection Remover to remove any AI Plagiarism produced from the essay generator.
