Essay on Annual Sports Day in School for Children

June 6, 2018 by Study Mentor Leave a Comment

Annual sports day is an event which is held in almost all educational institutions. From kindergarten schools to senior secondary schools, universities and colleges; all of them organize sports day. It is an attempt by these institutions to bring out the hidden talent and polish it to the core. These days even societies and apartments organize sports day to reward recognition to the budding sportsmen.

It was my last year in Lancer’s Convent and my last sports day as I was already pursuing my senior secondary education. All our friends decided to go and cheer up our friends taking part in the competition. Back then, we never knew we were making memories of a lifetime to hold onto.

The preparation for sports day had begun well in advance so as to make sure that the event was top notch. Students were called out from all classes for auditions into various races. In our school, sports day becomes more like an inter-house competition where the four houses- truth, peace, love and righteousness keep vying for the trophy.

It develops a feeling of euphoria among the students who turn up in big numbers at the event to see their friends participating and to cheer them. Our sports day is also characterized by performances from the dance club, music club and yoga club as well which actually makes it worth spending hours sitting in the burning ground.

It was a pleasant day. The weather was windy and serene, just the best for a perfect getaway from the examination stress. Also, we were not sweating profusely under the gaze of the sun which just became an add on to a reason why I loved sports day.

The complete school was dressed like a bride. It was a sight to see. Our school was festooned with buntings. There were flags all around which elicited a feeling of patriotism as the sports day was held on 14 August, just one day prior to 15 August- the Independence Day.

The sports day was held in the sports ground of our school which is quite huge in size. More than half of the ground was used for the competitions to be held. In the left out portion, students sat along with teachers enjoying the sports day. The seating arrangement was divided into four houses already mentioned above and students sat according to their house to cheer their friends fully. The judges and the commentator were sat on a stage.

Finally, at about 9 in the morning, the show was put on the road. The say was commenced with the seeking of blessings from gods for a good and a peaceful life ahead. After that, we went for the chanting of out esteemed national anthem which is actually the sweetest melody I have ever heard. It reminds me that I have a duty towards this nation to fulfil and I shall not shirk from it.

After finally seating everyone, the much anticipated program began. The children were so enthusiastic that my heart actually stopped when I saw them shouting for their friends. I witnessed a spirit of competition among the four houses with each one vying to win the match. Even their supporters were challenging each other with their voice levels to prove who was better.

The first race of kindergarten students began. It was hilarious to see the tiny tots hopping from one end to another as it was a hop race. They were so cute that I couldn’t keep myself from laughing at their antics.

The next race a home race wherein the tots had to do some tasks like picking up small bags, dressing up etc. in the midst of the races. This ended the kindergarten races. After that, we had a performance of the music club performing patriotic songs and believe me the whole crowd was singing with them tenaciously. It was a sight to behold.

The programme then proceeded with different kinds of races of different categories, all trying to compete to their best. We also had a dance performance by our beautiful dancers. This performance brought out the cultural diversity of India and it was also followed by a patriotic song. This performance was worth remembering and rendered my heart speechless with the talent of my own friends. I was proud to see them performing and being a part of something so special.

What was special about this event was the musical chairs game. But the catch was, it was played by teachers. It was a fun time to see them running around here and there to catch a seat. The crowd went gaga over this game. We watched their teachers excitedly and supported them with all the energy in them.

I just loved it. After that a game of volleyball was organized by us which was also against the teachers. On one side, there were teachers and on the other side, some core members from the council competed. It was a friendly match and again it was fun to see them competing.

A cricket match was also organized. Two teams of eleven players played the match against the each other. One team consisted of players from peace and love and the other consisted of players from righteousness and truth. It was a game of 10 overs for each team. Cricket has always been the favourite game of Lancerians.

They were ecstatic all throughout the game and never stopped cheering. At the end of the match, Peace and love won together and was awarded suitably.

Then began the prize distribution ceremony. Peace emerged at a top of the game with a total of 159 points succeeded by truth, love and righteousness respectively. All the participants were given certificates and the winners were given trophies and medals by our own Principal Madam.

The Annual School Sports Day

Essay No. 01

“All work and no play makes jack a dull boy.” Therefore our school has made a very good arrangement for games and sports. Games are played daily. Sports are arranged every now and then. Every year annual sports are held.

The annual sports Day is celebrated with great enthusiasm. Students’ guardians and other persons are invited. Flags are pitched in the fields. Teachers and students are on duty. Teachers of  other schools are called to act as judges. Every sportsman wears a white banyan and a white shirt. A great man is invited to preside over the function. This year the District Magistrate was invited.

The Annual School Sports Day is celebrated in our school with great preparations. This day gives us a great pleasure. We are full of joy on that day. The 15 th December was our sports day this year.

As usual an interesting programme was made for the day. We got printed copies of the programme. The principal invited parents also. The senior P.T.I. was incharge of the whole show. The sports began exactly at 10 A.M.

First of all, the athletes taking part in different events, staged a march past. The Principal of the school took the salute. Then the sports began.

The first item was the races. There were 100 metres race, the 400 metres race and the 880 metres race and five kilometers race. The five kilometers race was a great fun. The hurdle race was also enjoyable. It was a great fun to see the boys running was also enjoyable. It was a great fun to see the boys running with their hands tied backward. It was a great fun when boys jumped to pluck an apple tied higher up. When they tried to find biscuit under flour, their faces were covered with flour.

Then began to slow cycle race, Ravi, my friend, won it. The three kilometers cycle race was worth seeing. Many cyclists took part in it. It was won by Raj Gupta.

After the races came the jumps- the long jumps, the high jumps and the pole jumps. These item were also very interesting.

Then came the item for strong and healthy boys- the shot put, the discus throw, and the javelin throw. I did not take part in these items.

Again we had the most interesting item. It was the weight. Lifting. Arun had won the junior championship in this item last year. He went into the arena. He had a muscular body. He lifted the weights with great ease.

We were waiting for the teacher’s race. All the teachers took part in it. It was won by our P.T.I. Shri Rana.

The sports finished at 5 P.M. The Principal requested the District Magistrate to give away the Prizes. The competitors stood in a semi – circle. They came one by one to take their prizes. The principal then thanked the District Magistrate. The school was closed for a day.

The prize distribution followed the sports. Arun was considered the best athlete of the school. The P.T.I. received his prize a little doll. Everybody congratulated him. After this, the students got packet of sweets each . we returned home happily.

She was received at the gate by the school reception committee comprising the Principal, the Vice-Principal, the Secretary, Managing Committee, some senior teachers and the student representatives besides the director, physical education. She was garlanded and snaps were taken.

First started the march past. The sports flame was lighted by Mr Pradeep Kumar, the best athlete of the school. The events started immediately thereafter.

First started the athletic races. These included a hundred metre race, a two hundred metre race, a five hundred metre race and finally a two thousand metre race. I took part in the two hundred metre race and won the second prize.

Sports Day in My School

Every school celebrates its Sports Day and, to this all, the children very longingly look forward to. My school the St. Andrews Sr. Secondary School also has its Sports Day every year sometime in the month of November. The month of November is earmarked for the occasion, as, at this time, the weather is congenial for a long span of games on the field. When this day is about to come, there appears to be a lot of activity in the entire school premises as, arrangements take time. And so there is a lot of overtime beyond the scheduled hours of routine work.

Weeks before the Sports Day, children start giving their names for different events, and then, after the school hours, practices start. The children, who do not participate in any events, get other duties of the like of making relevant charts, making lists of games and participants etc. It is obvious that something is on for, at least for a fortnight before the event, studies are put as if on the hold, except of course for the STDs X and XII. The rest of the school is seen bustling with enjoyment and merriment for all enjoy such events. All the children, all the teachers and even all the other non-teaching staff seems to busy with some work or the other. This is because everyone yes, everyone is assigned a duty to see that the Day passes off well.

After a fortnight of being over busy with the preparations for the Sports Day, at last the day arrives. The lawns are so very meticulously done up, white chalk powder lines are installed for different events. Victory stands are beautifully done up to make the victors feel proud of being there after the events. All the children are so well groomed in their white uniforms that, it is a sight to watch and admire. To cap it all, the staff members are also very smartly dressed especially those involved with the different events they blend so well with the smart children that, the total effect is just smashing.

The day starts with the usual Assembly and then, all of us are instructed to go to our allotted places on the lawn, class wise. There are volunteers from the senior children who guide the smaller ones to their respective places and soon all is set as per the plan. As soon as all is settled, the Chief Guest arrives, and the Principal goes out to receive him/ her. The Chief Guest is taken to the dais and as soon as he/ she is settled, the Principal says a few words to introduce the guest to all, and requests him to say a few words and declare the Sports open. Now, the guest speaks usually on the importance of Sports and Sports Day, and declares the opening of the function. As soon as these two important speeches are over, the Chief Guest declares the Sports Day open, and there and then the events start.

One by one the events take place in a very well disciplined manner and the winners listed and made to stand on the Victory Stand and cheered by one and all. The games and Sports last for about two hours and then comes the most interesting moment of the function the moment of appreciating the winners by awarding them gifts and prizes, cups and shields. This is the ultimate moment of pleasure for winners when, amidst loud clapping and shouting of cheers, they get their rewards for their good work from the Chief Guest.

Even though I am not a very great enthusiast of games or sports, I just love this day and look forward to it through the year. I also make it a point to attend school on this day every year though I never participate. The thrill, the excitement, and then, the pleasure of winning are all moments worth seeing and enjoying. I love to see my friends and others participating with their hearts and souls with a complete involvement in the games. Their victory boosts up even my morale. Every year, after seeing this event, I decide that, I should also try to take part, but, the enthusiasm soon fades away as, I must admit that, I am not too keen a lover or fan of sports and games. I do love to watch it all but, I never feel the urge to participate.

Our school has always valued the role of sports in the development of its students. My physical fitness sir, Mr. Suri and other teachers makes sure that all the students are active in sports or in any other extracurricular activities.

The chief guest for the event was Mr Manoj Sudhakar, retired physical fitness teacher of our school. Some of the other dignitaries who accompanied him to grace the occasion were Mr Fernando, Mr Angre and Mr Cooper. These three men were senior physical training teachers of other schools. Our Principle accompanied the chief guest and other dignitaries for a tree plantation activity in the school compound. Following the plantation, the guests were ushered to the school ground where all were presented with a bouquet. This marked the beginning of the opening ceremony.

Senior students presented a welcome song following with the annual sports report of the school. The Principal proudly announced that 15 students were sent for the national level sports meet held in Kolkata and they had won many medals for the school. He congratulated them through the ongoing event.

The chief guest then declared the sports meet open by unfurling the school flag. Students displayed a coordinated March Past in groups of four houses – Sincerity, Equality, Fraternity and Liberty. The fifth and sixth group comprised of Scouts and Guides. The March Past was led by sports captains and the Parade Commander, Kashinath Kadam. Write an Essay on the Annual Sports Day of your School

Today a school without games and sports is unthinkable, as sports and games have become an integral element of present-day education. Formerly teaching consisted of merely imparting the basic skills of 3R’s (Reading, Writing and Arithmetic).

But true learning is much more than that. Today education is an all-round development of the child. In this respect games and sports play a significant role. It is in this backdrop that most schools organise their Annual Sports Day.

Last year, my school’s Annual Sports Day was held on 20th Oct. Generally a month of preparation precedes the day. A month prior to the event, all the children of the school were divided into four houses and respective sports groups such as senior, junior and sub-junior. Once the children are allotted their houses and groups, the various Outdoor Games begin. It is the most interesting and the most spirited part of the whole event.

Immediate preparation for the day commenced two days prior to the event. Different works such as, the preparation of the welcome gate, pandel, flag post, tracks, Olympic torch, decoration of the area, arrangement of the prizes, etc., were allotted to the different houses for completion. On 19th Oct, the final touches were given to the preparation and last rehearsals were held for the inaugural function and the cultural show.

The Sports Day commenced at 7.50

a.m. the following day with the welcoming of the chief guest. Our chief guest for the occasion was the newly appointed District Deputy Commissioner. He was solemnly welcomed at the gate by a group of Wangala dancers (Garo dancers) and by the school authorities. He was garlanded at the gate and given a bouquet of flowers as a token of official welcome. Thereafter, he was led to the specially erected pandal by the Wangala dancers.

As soon as he reached the Pandal, he hoisted the School’s Sports flag amidst the singing of the school anthem by the children, which was followed by an impressive march past, lighting of the Olympic flame and the oath-taking ceremony.

The chief guest then addressed the students wherein he outlined briefly the value of sports and games in student’s life and possibilities of career options in this field. The inaugural function came to a close with the display of a short drill. Sports events commenced soon after this.

The races, throws, jumps and the various items followed one by one. At 3.00 p.m the sports events in the field came to a close with the last item of musical chair for the staff. The concluding programme commenced immediately after this.

The chief event of the concluding function was the group dances performed by the different houses and the prize distribution by the chief guest. The last item of the eventful day was the de-hoisting of the sports flag by the chief guest, signalling the official closing of the school’s Annual Sports Day for the year.

Annual Sports Day is an eagerly awaited event in my school. It is a time of great fun and joy in the school as the days prior to the event as well as the day itself are marked by tournaments, matches and various competitions.

Apart from teaching us good values such as, sportsmanship, proper spirit of competition, team-spirit, co-operation, discipline in the field, etc. Annual Sports Day makes school life lively, interesting, enjoyable and memorable.

Has the Long Friendship of Bill Gates and Warren Buffett Reached Its Final Act?

Growing tensions between the two billionaires, over issues both substantive and stylistic, have roiled the world of philanthropy.

Warren Buffett standing with his arm on Bill Gates's shoulder.

By Anupreeta Das

Anupreeta Das is the author of the forthcoming book “Billionaire, Nerd, Savior, King,” from which this article is adapted.

In the summer of 1991, Mary Gates, the mother of the Microsoft billionaire Bill Gates, convinced her workaholic 35-year-old son to spend the July 4 holiday at Hood Canal, a scenic, outdoorsy location about two hours from Seattle that had long been the family getaway.

The Oracle of Omaha, Warren Buffett, was among the guests. When Mrs. Gates tried to introduce her son to Mr. Buffett, however, he brushed her off, saying that he didn’t want to meet a “stockbroker.”

But the two men hit it off immediately. Settling into a patterned couch, Mr. Buffett, dressed in a red polo shirt and dark trousers, his left foot propped up against the coffee table, and Mr. Gates in a tennis outfit — shorts and a white shirt, his white socks coming up to mid-calf, his mop of hair tousled — talked for 11 hours straight. The other guests had to pull them apart. Mr. Gates was surprised by the penetrating questions Mr. Buffett directed at him about the software business, and found himself warming to the avuncular Midwestern billionaire.

The two have been close friends ever since. Once, recounting the story of their meeting to students at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Mr. Gates called it an “unbelievable friendship.” Mr. Buffett quipped, “The moral of that is, listen to your mother.”

Theirs has been an unusual friendship. Mr. Buffett is folksy and outgoing, and never passes up an opportunity to crack a joke. He likes to speak in aphorisms. He enjoys breaking down complex investing principles into simple nuggets that anyone could understand. When he meets new people, Mr. Buffett is genuinely curious about their backgrounds. He asks them questions and listens intently, eyebrows furrowed, to the answers. Banter comes to him easily.
