Abstract: The focus of this paper is the strength of the evening bulletin and the work that goes into its production. What viewers see does not magically appear at 8:00 each evening. It’s the result of a daily team effort, the work many people put in behind the camera, some more visible than others—the unsung heroes so to speak, in more ways than one. Teamwork is the heart of the news bulletin; without it, it doesn’t go on the air. In modern television, the idea that news and entertainment should go hand in hand has ultimately prevailed. When NTV started facing counterparts with the Broadcasting Act 1993 allowing licenses to private radio and television channels, it changed its structure of news presentation by combining news with entertainment. In such attempt, NTV productions aimed at becoming balanced, with an ideal mix of television programming in which one piece complements the other. However, such attempts have largely failed. The evening news of NTV must serve both the public and the state while relating the views and activities of the political parties in power. In this exercise, NTV loses the respect from a viewer in the issues of credibility. The more credibility and authority NTV or any network has, the more it gains the respect of the viewer. In a country where political instability continues and people rely on television news, the contribution of the news bulletin takes on a much more important dimension. It would be naïve to suggest that all is well with the news industry in Nepal, though the bulletins appearing in the public’s living room every evening are likely the best that can be produced. It is evident that today’s rivalries do have their adverse effects on the behaviour of both publicly and privately owned broadcasters. This paper rests its analysis in this notion.

Pakistan entered into Television Broadcasting age with a small pilot TV Station established at Lahore from where transmission was first beamed in Black & White with effect from 26 November 1964. Television centers were established in Karachi and Rawalpindi/Islamabad in 1967 and in Peshawar and Quetta in 1974. While introducing the sophisticated branch of the electronic media in the country, the broad perspective kept in mind was to inform and educate the people through wholesome entertainment and to inculcate in them a greater awareness of their own history, heritage, current problems and development as well as knowledge of the world at large. When PTV came into existence in 1964, there was a staff of 30 employees, which has now risen to more than 6000 persons at all Units of the Corporation. The employees of PTV are divided into 09 groups and every group has a separate pay scale. The energy, innovation and vitality exhibited by the new leaders has, within a short span of one year, transformed PTV into a profitable organization with a leap of Rs 287 million from Rs 1431 million to Rs 1718 in advertising income; from Rs 148 million net operating loss to Rs 38 million net operating profit. The diligence of PTV and sustained efforts has resulted in better and creative programming with significant changes in presentation style. The promotion of programmes has been totally been revamped in lieu of improved repacking and tailor made programme along with energized marketing strategy. PTVs attempt for initiative has surfaced with a number of milestones of particular significance. Deserving special mention here are the daily programs of Tilawat & Tarjuma of the Holy Quran; programmes highlighting the cause of Kashmir; PTV World, a new satellite channel was launched in the face of tough international competition. The objective of providing a homely atmosphere to family viewers has been well achieved. The audience driven programmes have given PTV a new look and dramatically changed the views about PTV. PTV has surged ahead of its competitors and as such PTV-2 has been turned into a viable project. Generation of more than Rs 56 million within a span of five months of the implementation of the new idea speaks of this unparalleled achievement. Technical improvement of PTV is evident from the change in screen presentation. The public has greatly appreciated this cosmetic transformation not only in programmes but also in News & Current Affairs. Recent usage of Computer Technology to facilitate the generation of virtual sets is a significant landmark in the history of PTV. On the other hand active participatory programmes have supplemented the authenticity of Current Affairs programmes and generated a lot of public interest. Live Open Forum; PTV has taken a lead over its contemporaries by introducing Audio-Text and Teletext services in the region. The live cricket and hockey quizzes and PTV Awards are few examples of mass public participation through Audio text. Availability of on-line Flight Information, live surge and fall of stock exchanges, news updates etc. on normal home TV sets are few references of teletext application.

Abstract: Prasar Bharti is India's public broadcaster. It is an autonomous corporation of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB), Government of India. It comprises Doordarshan television network and All India Radio (AIR). Prasar Bharti was established on 23 November 1997. In the face of tremendous technological advances and severe competition from the airwaves since 1991, Doordarshan has survived and revived itself many times in the past five decades since its inception in 1959. As the former monopolistic public service broadcaster in the largest democracy in the world, it continues to struggle to fulfill its role as a mass medium for information, education and entertainment. This research tries to explore the nature of programs and audience participation in the production of these programs along with an enquiry about the usefulness of programs for the target audience. Doordarshan Ranchi is a unit of public broadcasting at regional level and study is an effort to evaluate the current scenario of feedback-mechanism and to discover various problems and challenges faced by this one of the oldest regional centres. While doing a case study, with the help of primarily structured and unstructured in-depth interviews, overview of the programming content data have been collected. Besides this secondary data such as annual reports, program schedules and files have been analysed. The results show that the way Doordarshan Ranchi, as a Public Service Broadcaster, has been taking up feedback mechanism and audience research leaves room for much improvement in the content. The participation of audience in content selection is almost negligible. However, the indication from the experts suggests that there is usefulness of content being delivered by Doordarshan. These regional channels are continuously under pressure to earn revenues because of increasing expenses and lack of proper funding from Central government. Doordarshan is aiming to increase its revenues more now days. Participation of farmers and rural audience is less. Being the only public service broadcaster in Jharkhand state, relay of programmes is limited to a certain district not entire Jharkhand.

Today we have more than 900 satellite channels in India. Every year number increases. News Broadcaster production cost and increased Competition, depleting advertising revenue make the Broadcaster to think over ways to reduce production cost. The crisis is coming from the fact that the business model has been broken for a period of time, substantially because in distribution, broadcaster doesn't get subscription money, but they are paying carriage fees. Competition among news broadcaster led to decrease job satisfaction level of Television journalists. This paper tries to emphasis the prevailing situation in News broadcasting and journalist's conditions.

In Bangladesh, more than a dozen of private TV channels are operating and about 10 new channels are waiting with green signal for transmission. Bangladesh Television (BTV), the only government owned and administered, and known as structurally a biased institution serves the audience the public service information most. At the same time it serves purposes of incumbent government. Public information (PI) broadcast means broadcasting towards public welfare which may bring about change in the betterment of life and work of people. Its main focus would be on information, education, and motivation values rather than entertainment. In case of information, dissemination, and documentation, all private TV channels in Bangladesh serve more entertainment and less public service information, whereas, BTV’s focus is evident on more PI. The owners and operators of private channels think first of their business profit as well as pressure from government and political parties. During formulating planning and strategies or building program content, they become cautious as they fear that the government become angry and shut down the channel.
