This speaks volumes about our education system. If students are not interested to study in a school environment, it is high time education experts change the way teaching is imparted. Our entire education system needs immediate revamp so that children love to study and not forced to study. The education system should be designed in such a way that students don’t miss out on a single class. But it is easier said than done. Education systems in Finland and South Korea have nearly achieved that feat. It requires visionary leadership and policies in India to make that dream come true.

But not every time that the holidays are all hunky-dory. Each and every one of us have experienced this during the coronavirus holidays when India was under a complete Lockdown for more than 2 months due to the spread of COVID 19 pandemic. Most of us,  irrespective of what age and occupation we had, were sick of holidays and sitting at home. While holidays that come our way once in while gives us time to reflect upon ourselves and take a break from the monotony of life,  if the holidays are indefinite,  then it will start taking a toll on our mental health as well as our physical health. As the saying goes, an idle mind is a devil’s workshop, if people are locked up in a house for a long time, our cognitive abilities will start shrinking and our children are especially vulnerable to these negative effects.

I would like to conclude by saying that holidays are important for us to relax and spend some quality time with our selves and with our families and loved ones. But building a life where we are not prisoners to holidays is also important. Build a life where every day of your life feels like a vacation. That kind of life is a truly happy and content life. And at the same time, indefinite holidays will have an opposite impact which means instead of feeling relaxed, our anxiety and restlessness will increase.

My Fond Memories of My Summer Holidays

Summer holidays are the best time of the year for every student. We plan a family trip during our summer vacations every year. Our family trip is the best part of these holidays and I always look forward to it. Most of the times the four of us that is my father, mother, brother and I go on these trips but many times my cousins also join us. These trips are always full of fun. Last year, we went to Ooty and Mysore for six days. Both the places were spectacular.

Ooty was particularly awesome. These places encompass many beautiful gardens and marvellous edifices. We went for sight-seeing, had scrumptious food and spent quality time with each other. It was a great experience. It was one of the best family trips we had every gone for. It was also the longest one. We often plan holidays only for 2-3 days but this one was for 6 days and was thus more fun. I cherish the days spent there. These are my fondest memories of my summer holidays.

I still remember how I hesitantly handed over the consent form for the trip to my father and began telling him about the details of the trip. I also told him that many of my classmates are going for it and that I also wanted to go. Initially, he refused as he felt I was too young to go out without their supervision. It took me around 2 days to convince my mother to allow me to go for the trip and she in turn convinced my father for the same. I was finally glad and super excited about the trip. I promised them that I will not talk to strangers, always move with the group and be careful with everything during the trip.

We travelled from Delhi to Kalka in train and then took a bus to reach Shimla. We reached our hotel in the afternoon. The first day we went to the mall road. The weather was pleasant and the place was amazing. I had been to various hill stations earlier as well but this place had something very refreshing about it. The company of friends made it all the more amazing. We roam around on the mall road and had planned to have dinner in a restaurant on our way back to the hotel but could not resist the smell of freshly steamed momos. They were super delicious and we ate so many of them that there was no room for dinner.

The next day we went to the Jakhu temple. The road to the temple was quite steep and we encountered hundreds of langoors on our way. It was a bit scary but exciting at the same time. The temple is set at a very serene place and we loved sitting in peace for some time. On our way back we decided to trek down the road and the experience was amazing. In the evening we visited the church and spent time on the mall road again. On the third day of our trip our teachers allowed us to go for shopping. We went to the Tibetan market to buy some really cool stuff. I bought scarves, hair clips and a jacket for myself. I also bought souvenirs for my siblings and friends.

The time finally came when we had to bid goodbye to the beautiful mountains and valley view of Shimla. We took the night bus straight for Delhi and reached home safely.

I had been on many family trips before this and loved them but the joy and excitement of going on trips with friends is something different. Since then I have been on many trips with my friends but I can never forget the wonderful moments spent on my first trip with them.

The winter holidays are an exciting time of year filled with fun traditions, tasty foods, and quality time with family and friends. Last December, my family and I took a holiday trip that I will never forget. In this essay, I will share some of the highlights from my December holiday. I will discuss our travels, the special celebrations we enjoyed, and what I learned from the experience.

As part of our holiday preparations, my family researched different destinations to visit over our school break. After much debate, we settled on a one-week road trip along the coast of California (Topic Sentence). For the first part of our journey, we packed up our suitcases and snacks and embarked on an eight-hour drive from our home in Northern California down to Los Angeles (Transition). Hitting the road for long periods of time can be tiring, so we listened to Christmas music and audiobooks to pass the time and keep our energy up. Taking breaks to stretch our legs at scenic overlooks also helped the drive feel shorter.

AI Testing Mostly Uses English Right Now. That’s Risky

O ver the last year, governments, academia, and industry have invested considerable resources into investigating the harms of advanced AI. But one massive factor seems to be continuously overlooked: right now, AI’s primary tests and models are confined to English.

Advanced AI could be used in many languages to cause harm, but focusing primarily on English may leave us with only part of the answer. It also ignores those most vulnerable to its harms.

After the release of ChatGPT in November, 2022, AI developers  expressed surprise  at a capability displayed by the model: It could “speak” at least 80 languages , not just English. Over the last year, commentators have pointed out that  GPT-4  outperforms Google Translate in dozens of languages. But this focus on English for testing leaves open the possibility that the evaluations may be neglecting capabilities of AI models that become more relevant for other languages. 

As half the world steps out to the ballot box this year, experts have echoed concerns about the capacity of AI systems to not only be  “misinformation superspreaders ,” but also its ability to threaten  the integrity of elections. The threats here  range from  “deepfakes and voice cloning” to “identity manipulation and AI-produced fake news.” The recent release of “multi-models”—AI systems which can also speak, see, and hear everything you do—such as  GPT-4o and Gemini Live  by tech giants OpenAI and Google, seem poised to make this threat even worse. And yet, virtually all discussions on policy, including May’s  historic AI Safety Summit  in Seoul and the release of the long-anticipated  AI Roadmap in the U.S. Senate , neglect non-English languages.

This is not just an issue of leaving some languages out over others. In the U.S., research has consistently demonstrated that English-as-a-Second-Language (ESL) communities, in this context predominantly Spanish-speaking, are more vulnerable to misinformation than English-as-a-Primary-Language (EPL) communities. Such results have been replicated for cases involving migrants generally, both in the United States and in Europe where refugees have been effective targets—and subjects—of these campaigns. To make matters worse, content moderation guardrails on social media sites—a likely fora for where such AI-generated falsehoods would proliferate—are heavily biased towards English. While 90% of Facebook's users are outside the U.S. and Canada, the company's content moderators just spent 13% of their working hours focusing on misinformation outside the U.S. The failure of social-media platforms to moderate hate speech in Myanmar, Ethiopia, and other countries in embroiled in conflict and instability further betrays the language gap in these efforts.

Even as policymakers, corporate executives and AI experts prepare to combat AI-generated misinformation, their efforts cast a shadow over those most likely to be targeted and vulnerable to such false campaigns, including immigrants and those living in the Global South.

This discrepancy is even more concerning when it comes to the potential of AI systems to cause mass human casualties, for instance, by being employed to develop and launch a bio-weapon. In 2023, experts expressed fear that large language models (LLMs) could be used to synthesize and deploy pathogens of potential pandemic potential. Since then, a multitude of research papers investigated this problem have been published both from within and outside industry. A common finding of these reports is that the current generation of AI systems are as good as and not better than search engines like Google in providing malevolent actors with hazardous information that could be use to build bio-weapons. Research by leading AI company OpenAI yielded this finding in January 2024, followed by a report by the RAND Corporation which showed a similar result.

What is astonishing about these studies is the near-complete absence of testing in non-English languages. This is especially perplexing as most Western efforts to combat non-state actors are concentrated in regions of the world where English is rarely spoken as first language. The claim here is not that Pashto, Arabic, Russian, or other languages may yield more dangerous results than in English. The claim, instead, is simply that using these languages is a capability jump for non-state actors that are better versed in non-English languages.

LLMs are often better translators than traditional services. It is much easier for a terrorist to simply input their query into a LLM in a language of their choice and directly receive an answer in that language. The counterfactual point here, however, is relying on clunky search engines in their own language, using Google for their language queries (which often only yields results published on the internet in their language), or go through an arduous process of translation and re-translation to get English language information with the possibility of meanings being lost. Hence, AI systems are making non-state actors just as good as if they spoke fluent English. How much better that makes them is something we will find out in the months to come.

This notion—that advanced AI systems may provide results in any language as good as if asked in English—has a wide range of applications. Perhaps the most intuitive example here is “spearphishing,” targeting specific individuals using manipulative techniques to secure information or money from them. Since the popularization of the  “Nigerian Prince ” scam, experts posit a basic rule-of-thumb to protect yourself: If the message seems to be written in broken English with improper grammar chances, it’s a scam. Now such messages can be  crafted  by those who have no experience of English, simply by typing their prompt in their native language and receiving a fluent response in English. To boot,  this says nothing about how much AI systems may boost scams where the same non-English language is used in input and output.

It is clear that the "language question" in AI is of paramount importance, and there is much that can be done. This includes new guidelines and requirements for testing AI models from government and academic institutions, and pushing companies to develop new benchmarks for testing which may be less operable in non-English languages. Most importantly, it is vital that immigrants and those in the Global South be better integrated into these efforts. The coalitions working to keep the world safe from AI must start looking more like it.

Summer holidays are the best time of the year for every student. We plan a family trip during our summer vacations every year. Most of the times the four of us that is my father, mother, brother and I go on these trips but many times my cousins also join us. These trips are always full of fun. Last year, we went to Ooty and Mysore for six days. Both the places were spectacular.

Ooty was particularly awesome. These places encompass many beautiful gardens and marvellous edifices. We went for sight-seeing, had scrumptious food and spent quality time with each other. It was a great experience. It was one of the best family trips we had every gone for. It was also the longest one. We often plan holidays only for 2-3 days but this one was for 6 days and was thus more fun. I cherish the days spent there. These are my fondest memories of my summer holidays.

Holidays are a good time to take a break from the routine. It is the time to indulge in our hobbies, meet our old friends and extended family members. However, we must not let our studies take a back seat during this time. We must devote some time to studies even during our holidays.

Now, don’t over indulge in your work. Just squeeze in an hour or two each day for the same so that you stay in touch.

• Follow Your Hobby/ Interest

It is a good idea to join a hobby class. Indulge in anything of your choice such as dancing, swimming, yoga, painting, sketching or music. Take-up a short course for a week or 10 days depending on the number of holidays you have.

• Meet Friends and Relatives

Socializing is very important. We don’t get enough time to visit our friends and relatives due to our hectic routine. But we can certainly do so during our holidays. So take out time to meet them.

• Go on a Trip

Go for a trip with your family or friends to take a break from your routine life. Trips are refreshing. I always make it a point to go for one trip each during my summer and winter holidays.

• Spend Time with Your Family

Most importantly, spend time with your family. Family always comes first! So, you must spend quality time with each of your family members. Spend time with your grandparents, parents and siblings to strengthen your bond.

I am also allowed to go over to my friends place to spend the day every once in a while. I also love the time when my cousins come over to stay at my place. Those days are particularly the best part of the summer vacations.

Most importantly, holidays are a time when we can relax and understand how to improve our skills to perform better in our exams as well as other activities. I make sure that I set aside at least 2-3 hours a day to study during the vacations. This helps me keep pace with my studies as I join back.

Importance of Holidays for Working People

Working professionals and businessmen also yearn for holidays. But they do not get long vacations like the school and college going kids. However, whatever little break they get they must make the most of it by indulging in the activity of their choice.

Working professionals mostly have long working hours these days. Many people even require working after they get back home from their work place. This hectic professional life often takes a toll on their personal life. They are hardly able to spend any time with their family members and this result in conflicts and strained relationships. Holidays give them an opportunity to spend time with their family to strengthen the bond. It is a good idea to plan a family vacation. Socializing is also very important and this can also be done during holidays as the hectic work routine does not allow any room for it during the regular days. It is a good time to meet one’s friends and relatives. Holidays are also a time to relax and focus on one’s physical as well as mental health.

Holidays are important as they help in maintaining a balance between our personal and professional life. We must spend them wisely to make the most of them.

Holidays are the best time of the year. I always look forward to my summer holidays as these are the longest holidays we students get during the year. I mostly spend them with my family and extended family. My parents also allow me to go on a few outings with friends as a reward if I study and behave well during the holidays.

My First Holiday with School Friends

Until 5 th grade my parents did not allow me to go for school trips but as I entered my 6 th grade I got this chance. My school had organized a three day trip to Shimla during the summer vacations. Many of my friends filled the consent to go for the trip. I wanted to go to but feared that my parents would not agree. At first, I thought there was no point even asking because their answer would only be no but my friends insisted I should.

I still remember how I hesitantly handed over the consent form for the trip to my father and began telling him about the details of the trip. I also told him that many of my classmates are going for it and that I also wanted to go. Initially, he refused as he felt I was too young to go out without their supervision. It took me around 2 days to convince my mother to allow me to go for the trip and she in turn convinced my father for the same. I was finally glad and super excited about the trip. I promised them that I will not talk to strangers, always move with the group and be careful with everything during the trip.

We travelled from Delhi to Kalka in train and then took a bus to reach Shimla. We reached our hotel in the afternoon. The first day we went to the mall road. The weather was pleasant and the place was amazing. I had been to various hill stations earlier as well but this place had something very refreshing about it. The company of friends made it all the more amazing. We roam around on the mall road and had planned to have dinner in a restaurant on our way back to the hotel but could not resist the smell of freshly steamed momos. They were super delicious and we ate so many of them that there was no room for dinner.

The next day we went to the Jakhu temple. The road to the temple was quite steep and we encountered hundreds of langoors on our way. It was a bit scary but exciting at the same time. The temple is set at a very serene place and we loved sitting in peace for some time. On our way back we decided to trek down the road and the experience was amazing. In the evening we visited the church and spent time on the mall road again. On the third day of our trip our teachers allowed us to go for shopping. We went to the Tibetan market to buy some really cool stuff. I bought scarves, hair clips and a jacket for myself. I also bought souvenirs for my siblings and friends.

The time finally came when we had to bid goodbye to the beautiful mountains and valley view of Shimla. We took the night bus straight for Delhi and reached home safely.

I had been on many family trips before this and loved them but the joy and excitement of going on trips with friends is something different. Since then I have been on many trips with my friends but I can never forget the wonderful moments spent on my first trip with them.

In the second season of the “Game of Thrones” spin-off , half-siblings Aegon and Rhaenyra Targaryen battle for the Iron Throne. Silver-haired egoists, brutal acts of revenge and spectacular dragon pyrotechnics make for engrossing TV.

“Immaculate”

An American nun (Sydney Sweeney) is impregnated against her will by a geneticist-turned-priest who wants to clone Jesus Christ. One of the most cinematic and cleverly constructed horror movies in years, “Immaculate” is provocative in its treatment of religion and female autonomy .

“Love Lies Bleeding”

This darkly comic crime thriller follows besotted lovers (Kristen Stewart and Katy O’Brian) embroiled in a bloody mess, who come face-to-face with one of the pair’s gun-running fathers (Ed Harris). The film gets more violent and sweatily sensual as it goes along. Not for the faint-hearted.

This humane film plays clever games with structure and genre. A widow (Ando Sakura) is worried by the strange behaviour of her son (Kurokawa Soya). Events are shown from three angles in three sections: the first a mystery, the second a satirical farce and the third a wistful drama.

“Mr & Mrs Smith”

Matrimony, the film of 2005 winkingly suggested, is an exercise in subterfuge. The TV version amplified the emotional questions; the politics were starker, too. The result was a show more nuanced and equivocal than its movie counterpart, but with plenty of car chases and explosions.

“The New Look”

This drama charts Christian Dior ’s rise to the top of the fashion world in Paris during the second world war. It explores his rivalry with Coco Chanel and probes the moral quandaries of life under Nazi occupation. A superb cast including Juliette Binoche and John Malkovich brings the surprising, stylish tale to life.

David Nicholls’s novel about the vicissitudes of fate already had millions of fans. Netflix’s new adaptation created millions more. (It also bestowed heart-throb status on Leo Woodall.) The show’s portrayal of love and coming-of-age is compelling, but its depiction of grief is heart-rending.

Steven Zaillian trades the pastel hues of “The Talented Mr Ripley” from 1999, for stark black and white; he also extends the running time from just over two hours to around eight. The result is beautifully shot and paced. Andrew Scott is perfect as Ripley: charming, ruthless, greedy and cold-blooded.

“Robot Dreams”

This animated film tells the tale of an anthropomorphised dog who becomes fast friends with a robot. It has an ingenious joke in almost every frame and is as insightful as a cartoon can be. It is all done without a word of dialogue.

In 17th-century Japan, Lord Toranaga (Sanada Hiroyuki) and an English sailor (Cosmo Jarvis) become unlikely allies. This show offers a beautifully shot, impeccably acted study of political and personal power . It is the historical epic viewers did not know they needed. ■
