As reigning All-Ireland U14 Schools Basketball champions, Pres Castleisland has been granted an automatic invitation to represent Ireland at the inaugural International Schools Federation (ISF) World Schools U15 Basketball Cup in Zadar, Croatia in March 2020.

When John Enright, Basketball coach for Presentation Secondary School Castleisland, was planning the year ahead for the various teams under his guidance, he certainly hadn’t planned a trip to Croatia for his charges.

Excitement is growing amongst the U15 basketballers at the thoughts of representing their school and their country and no doubt it will reach fever pitch by March.

Thoughts have now turned to the serious matter of fundraising as all costs, including flights will have to be met by those participating. Given the community spirit in Castleisland, the girls are hopeful of great support which will make the cost burden easier to manage.

Commenting on the news, school Principal, Katherina Broderick, said she was delighted with the news and it was just reward for the commitment of the girls to basketball in Presentation Castleisland, which is the most successful school in Ireland with 27 All-Ireland titles.

Guidance and support of students is at the heart of our Pastoral Care System at Presentation Secondary School Castleisland.  All members of our school community, especially management, the Year Heads, the Student Support Team, the Leader of Wellbeing and the Career Guidance Teacher play an important caring and supportive role in the school where students can get advice and supports about a range of issues.   From relationships to study skills and family difficulties to college advice and information, the Team are on hand to meet with students in a confidential environment where they can be cared for and supported throughout their time in the school.

Guidance helps pupils explore their thoughts and feelings and the choices open to them. It gives care and support to pupils learning to cope with the many aspects of growing up and school life and with their individual personal circumstances.  Our Guidance Team also have regular contact with parents, psychologists, employers, colleges, social services, counsellors and the Department of Education to support the provision of guidance and support to students.

The Guidance Dept within Presentation Castleisland provides support for all students in three main areas:

Personal and Social Guidance   Educational Guidance   Career and Vocational Guidance

Personal and Social Guidance

This area empowers students to make decisions, solve problems, change behaviour and resolve issues in their lives, and to develop skills in the areas of self-development, assertiveness, teamwork and communication.

Educational Guidance

This area of Guidance recognises students different learning abilities and their inherent talents. Each student is encouraged to optimise their learning skills. This involves helping students with choices on subjects, courses and levels; aiding motivation and management learning; showing students how to use available resources, study skills and exam techniques; and demonstrating how to use computer aided research.

Career and Vocational Guidance

This area of Guidance helps students to identify career and vocational goals by developing their self-analysis skills and sourcing and managing career information. This involves:

- having an understanding of the pathways into higher education,

- making and carrying out appropriate life choices and plans,

- practising interview techniques, CV writing and cover letters,

- identifying strengths and weakness from the results of various interest and aptitude tests,

- becoming aware of employment opportunities

Academic Success

One of the core values of being a CEIST school is achieving quality in teaching and learning. At Presentation Castleisland, we encourage and nurture the academic success of all our students, helping them to reach their full potential and create opportunities for fulfilling and rewarding roles in life after secondary school. We are particularly proud of our Leaving Cert Students in recent years:

Fiona Brosnan

My name is Fiona Brosnan. I feel very fortunate for the countless opportunities available to me as a Presentation student. In first year, Mr Dargan helped us to win the national Enterprise title with the Complete Camán group. The same year, our Under-14 basketball team won the National Cup in the National Basketball Arena. In second year, we had the opportunity to visit Google’s European Headquarters in Dublin as part of the Digital Champions initiative. In Transition Year, I was able to attend a UNICEF training programme, SciFest, ActionTalks and countless workshops. We were also encouraged to take part in GAISCE, which allowed us to volunteer in our local community. I was given the chance to visit Serbia as an Irish representative of the European Youth Parliament in fifth year. The school supported every endeavour I wanted to try and opened up so many doors for me. I recently have been accepted into the Ad Astra academy in UCD as a scholar. I was told that they were looking for someone who showed that they could be part of a community, and I think that is testament to the community we were all part of in Pres Castleisland. The friendships I made, and the support I received from teachers, have been invaluable to me and I definitely would recommend Presentation Castleisland to future students. I was very lucky to be a Pres girl.

Eibhlís Brosnan

presentation secondary school castleisland

The six years I spent in the school were some of the happiest of my life. I cannot emphasise how much the school fostered and encouraged my personal and academic development, as well as that of all the other students.

The school is a fantastic place to learn. The teachers are supportive and committed to providing a stimulating learning environment. This is reflected in the consistent high results achieved in Pres Castleisland.

There is also a broad range of extracurricular options in our school. The basketball and football teams both have achieved remarkable success – the school has over 20 basketball All-Ireland titles. I myself was a member of the choir and the trad society, which worked together to release a CD last year. There are myriad other choices too – from chess to debating to enterprise, there is a club for everyone at Pres Castleisland.

Nonetheless, the best thing about Pres Castleisland is the atmosphere. Everyone knows everyone, and each teacher is fully aware of their students’ strengths and potentials. The health and wellbeing of students is prioritised, and there are frequent workshops and seminars held to promote the importance of self-care. Any student enduring a difficult patch in their lives can unquestionably find support from both their peers and the staff. This is really the standout feature of Presentation Secondary School, Castleisland. I feel fully equipped to face the challenges that third level holds because my secondary school education was second to none, and I can’t recommend it highly enough.
