Korea Box Office: ‘Confidential Assignment 2’ Reaches $47 Million After Winning Fifth Weekend

Comedy action film “Confidential Assignment 2: International” claimed its fifth successive weekend victory at the South Korean box office as only U.S. horror film “ Smile ” was able to break into the top five. The CJ Entertainment-distributed “Confidential Assignment 2” managed $1.64 million over the Friday to Sunday period, according to data from Kobis, the tracking service operated by the Korean Film Council (KOFIC). That represented a 27% share of the market.

Japanese-animation “Crayon Shin Chan: School Mystery! The Splendid Tenkasu Academy” rose from fourth to third place with a weekend. It earned $913,000 for a cumulative total of $2.73 million.
“Honest Candidate 2” suffered a 52% weekend on weekend decline, slipping to fourth place, for a cumulative of $4.69 million.
“Smile” a creepy low-budget thriller that has been on top for two weeks in North America and is now on wide international release, debuted in fifth place in Korea . It earned $305,000 over the weekend and $371,000 over the five days since Wednesday.
Overall numbers remained low for the sixth week out of the last seven, reflecting a weak flow of new release titles. The latest weekend also compared with a long holiday weekend a week earlier, and was 21% lower.
Distributors in Korea have taken to re-releasing older movies to fill the gap. A week earlier it was “Avatar” that returned. In the latest weekend it was “Dune” and the specially created “Spider-Man: No Way Home – The More Fun Stuff Version”. “Dune” earned $109,000. “Spider-Man” earned $104,000.

‘Confidential Assignment 2’ Reaches $35 Million on Second Weekend at Korea Box Office

For the second weekend running, comedy action film “ Confidential Assignment 2 : International” held top spot at the South Korean box office . And it did so with a massive 75% share of the market.
But as the Chuseok (Korean Thanksgiving) holiday retreated into the rear-view mirror numbers, both for the sequel film and the nationwide box office, came crashing down.

“Confidential Assignment 2” earned $6.89 million over the latest Friday to Sunday period, according to data from Kobis, the tracking service operated by the Korean Film Council (KOFIC). That figure was down 57% compared with its opening salvo of $21.0 million a week earlier.
Still, since opening on Sept. 7, the film has already amassed $35.2 million. That makes it the fifth highest grossing film of the year to date, ahead of “Hunt” and behind “Dr Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.”
The film was directed by Lee Seok-hoon and executive produced by hitmaker JK Youn. It stars Hyun bin, Yoo Hai Jin, Lim Yoon-a and Daniel Henney.
It is a sequel to the 2017 hit “Confidential Assignment,” in which operatives from North and South Korea cooperate to take down a criminal. The earlier title earned $46 million from 7.82 million spectators.
Comedy, “6/45” held on to second place, but earned less than $1 million. It scored $910,000 for a cumulative of $13.4 million since release on Aug. 24, 2022.
Recent holdover, “Katuri The Movie The Big City Adventure” earned $259,000 in third place. The Korean-made animation has earned $949,000 after 11 days on release.
“Hunt” took $156,000 in fourth place for a cumulative of $32.0 million. “Top Gun Maverick” earned $151,000 for a cumulative of $63.2 million. Previously released in 2019, “Aladdin” earned $111,000 in sixth place for a cumulative of $78.6 million.
The weekend’s highest placed new release was “Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero” which opened in seventh with a score of $80,800 over the weekend and $117,000 over its opening five days.
“The Black Phone” earned $78,800 in its second weekend of release in Korea. That gave it a $749,000 cumulative.
“Hansan: Rising Dragon” brought up tenth place with $40,000 over the weekend and a cumulative of $53.1 million since release eon July 27, 2022.
“Vita Dolce,” a Korean drama about a popular singer who become a classical musician, also scored $189,000 from 8,100 ticket sales, according to Kobis.

In New York City, Jang Myong-jun, who is the leader of a North Korean criminal organization is about to be transferred to Pyongyang, where the FBI officials are attacked by North Korean gangsters and Myong-jun escapes. As Myong-jun reportedly sneaked into Seoul using a fake passport, the North Korean government sends Im Cheol-ryong to Seoul again to catch him.
Kang Jin-tae meets Cheol-ryong and decides to resume the investigation to trail Myong-jun, but the duo’s project are interrupted by an FBI agent named Jack, who wishes to bring the North Korean criminals back to U.S. on charges of killing FBI officials. They agree where the operation is expanded to a trilateral collaboration of the Koreans and Americans. How does the trio capture Myong-jun forms the crux of the plot.

Confidential Assignment 2: International (Korean: 공조2: 인터내셔날) is a South Korean action comedy film directed by Lee Seok-hoon. It serves as the sequel to the 2017 film Confidential Assignment. The film stars Hyun Bin, Yoo Hae-jin, Im Yoon-ah, Daniel Henney, and Jin Seon-kyu.
Filming began on February 18, 2021, and ended on June 13, 2021.
The film was released on 2167 screens on September 7, 2022, in South Korea. The opening recorded 216,304 admissions and topped the South Korean box office. On September 9, the film surpassed 1 million admissions in 3 days of release.
As of 17 September 2022, it is the 3rd highest-grossing Korean film of 2022, with a gross of US$33,472,166 and 4,390,630 admissions.
