“Studying in the UK” Chevening Essay Example 1

For my master’s degree course, I have a keen interest in specializing in Financial Economics and seek to pursue it in the UK at the University of Manchester, the University of Kent, or the University of Glasgow. My decision to zero in on Financial Economics as opposed to any other course has been underpinned by my long-term career goal: to rise through the professional ranks to eventually become the Chief Financial Economist in the National Treasury (Kenya).

I am acutely aware that such a senior and critical position will require expert-level knowledge and advanced understanding of financial analysis, planning and strategy, international and bilateral trade, investment policy, micro and macro-economic trends, global, regional, and sectoral developments, international business development, negotiating international agreements, trade litigation, and the production and distribution of goods and services. It also requires the ability to collect and process economic and statistical data, carry out trade and economic research, and perform high-level analysis using different sampling and econometric methods, hence my desire to become an expert in Financial Economics.

A rigorous course that equips me with the above knowledge, practical skills, and more will be critical. From my extensive research, all three universities I have chosen offer very high-quality training in Financial Economics, and I am confident that any of the three universities are well equipped to help me advance my knowledge in this area. The University of Manchester, in particular, stands out to me because it has been ranked sixth in the UK in the 2019 Academic Ranking of World Universities. It also offers a wide array of facilities and resources, plus numerous societies at the university, which will provide me with excellent opportunities for networking and exchanging great ideas.

Moreover, the Financial Economics course perfectly aligns with my current educational background and professional experience. I possess a Bachelor of Science in Actuarial Science from the University of Nairobi and CISI Level 1 and Level 2 professional qualifications. Given my existing grasp of finance and economics, I will be able to cope with the challenges of the course with relative ease. As far as my work experience is concerned, I presently work as an Equities and Fixed Income Trader at NIC Securities Ltd. Before this position, I had worked as the Operations Assistant/ Supervisor at NIC Bank Kenya, the Relationship Officer (Operations) at Equity Bank Limited, the Acting Supervisor (Operations) at Equity Bank Limited, and the Relationship Officer (Operations) at Equity Bank Limited, respectively. These professional experiences perfectly lend themselves to the field of Financial Economics, and I do not doubt that I will be able to draw on my considerable hands-on experience in both Finance and Economics to handle the course’s requirements. My work and education will be a natural progression into a Financial Economics career path.

Despite being among the top ten destinations for foreign direct investment in Africa and initiating reforms that have led to economic growth since 2003, Kenya faces a high poverty rate and a widening inequality gap. This is due to the lack of evidence-based policies, corruption, and political instability during elections. The number of millionaires is expected to increase while the number of poor people is increasing in the next decade should be a concern for any policymaker in the country. This has motivated me to pursue a Master’s degree in International Development to gain knowledge and skills in poverty reduction, development, and addressing inequality. Though much of my career has been in banking, my experience with poor rural communities as a parliamentary candidate in the 2017 General Election makes my case to switch careers.

My first choice is the MSc Applied International Development offered at the University of Reading. The university is among the top twenty institutions in the United Kingdom by research intensity and top thirty by research power which will develop my research competencies to develop effective evidence-based poverty reduction policies. I plan to specialize in their Agriculture and Social Development pathway as this will align with my goal of addressing poverty using agriculture. In addition, the course is offered at the Graduate Institute of International Development, Agriculture and Economics (GIIDAE), where I can take electives in agriculture, such as Agriculture Project Planning and Management in Developing Countries, taught by Dr. Chittur Srinivasan.

My second preferred course is MSc International Development: Poverty, Inequality and Development, offered at the University of Manchester. Apart from learning strategies and policies to advance equality, development, and reduce poverty, I will also have a chance for a field trip to experience the global challenge of inequality in another country as part of the course. Based on the 2018 World QS universities rankings by subject, the University is rated 14th in the world and 3rd in the United Kingdom on Development Studies.

My third choice is MSc International Development at the University of Edinburgh. The course is appealing because apart from learning about the historical approaches of international development and politics associated with the subject, there is a whole unit on contemporary issues and organizations of importance to development policy and practice. The University also offers an eight-week research-based project where one is attached to an institution either in the United Kingdom or overseas with an option of completing a research dissertation based on the fieldwork or print and library sources. This will also provide practical experience to complement coursework. The University also has beautiful classic buildings and surrounding scenery that would provide a perfect getaway after lectures to refresh the mind.

Overall, studying in the UK will provide an opportunity to build collaborations to achieve Kenyan Vision 2030, which aims to industrialize and transform the country into middle-income status while ensuring high-quality life for its citizens.

My Chevening Journey, Part 3: Studying in the UK essay.

When applying for your Chevening Scholarship the third essay you write is on Studying in the UK. The question you will be answering in this essay is, Outline why you have selected your chosen three university courses, and explain how this relates to your previous academic or professional experience and your plans for the future. Please do not duplicate the information you have entered on the work experience and education section of this form.

You can watch the Studying in the UK essay tips on  YouTube:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PndU6Tcnjz8

When selecting your courses, these are some of the most important factors to consider:

 Ability~ Select courses that you can manage the academic workload. For instance some courses require specific qualifications in the bachelors degree. This is usually stated in the admission requirements for the course.

 Qualifications~ Although the scholarship accepts a 2:2 (second class lower division), most UK master’s courses accept a 2:1 and above. Some universities/courses also have higher English proficiency requirements.

 Career plan ~ Your course should also be in line with your career plan which you will write in the fourth and final essay. Your career will be determined by that problem in your country that you want to solve and in line with UK priorities in your country. These can be found in your DFID country website.

The structure of the essay should be in paragraphs not numbered with the first paragraph introducing a problem in your country that motivated you to pursue that course. The first paragraph should also state the course. You can also statistics sparingly to convince the reader of the essay the magnitude of the problem and when you do so, use the latest available data. This helps in building your case on the relevance of your program to your future career plan. In addition, this will form the answer to the interview question ‘Why have you selected this course and the basis of your three university choices’ if shortlisted. You can choose three courses from different universities or three closely related courses from the same university.

The information on courses will be found in specific universities websites, program objectives and modules. It is important to compare modules of programs with the same title in different universities to see whether they suit you. For instance MSc Food Security at University of Warwick is a science course and requires background knowledge in science compared to similar courses in other universities such as Reading. Such differences can only be identified by checking the modules/ course units.

chevening essay on studying in the uk

My introduction and first paragraph of my essay was as follows;

Despite being among the top ten destinations for foreign direct investment in Africa and initiating reforms that have led to economic growth since 2003, Kenya faces a high poverty rate and a widening inequality gap. This is due to the lack of evidence-based policies, corruption and political instability during elections. The fact that the number of millionaires is expected to increase while the number of poor people is increasing in the next decade should be a concern for any policymaker in the country. This has motivated me to pursue a Master’s degree in International Development to gain knowledge and skills on poverty reduction, development and addressing inequality. Though much of my career has been in banking, my experience with poor rural communities as a parliamentary candidate in the 2017 General Election makes my case to switch careers.

The second paragraph covered my first choice. You need to convince the reader that you have researched about your universities and courses. You can use university rankings ( specify), location, delivery of content or mode of examination and co-curricula activities. For every reason you give, it is paramount to state how it applies to you. For instance when you say that the University of Reading is rated 1st and 6th in the UK and the world respectively on agriculture and forestry courses, so what? You can give two or three reasons for every course but in my case I was a bit detailed in my first choice. Stating a module that is relevant to a problem in your country and it’s lecturer will make you stand out.

My second paragraph that explained my first choice was as follows;

The MSc Applied International Development offered at the University of Reading is my first choice. The university is among the top twenty institutions in the United Kingdom by research intensity and top thirty by research power which will develop my research competencies to come up with effective evidence-based poverty reduction policies. I plan to specialize in their Agriculture and Social Development pathway as this will be in line with my goal of addressing poverty using agriculture In addition, the course is offered at the Graduate Institute of International Development, Agriculture and Economics (GIIDAE) where I can take electives in agriculture such as Agriculture Project Planning and Management in Developing Countries taught by Dr. Chittur Srinivasan.

Here are my other two paragraphs covering the second and third choices.

My second preferred course is MSc International Development: Poverty, Inequality and Development offered at the University of Manchester. Apart from learning strategies and policies being implemented to advance equality, development and reduce poverty, I will also have a chance for a field trip to experience the global challenge of inequality in another country as part of the course.

My last paragraph was a conclusion of my essay and to wrap up my choice of a masters in international development and was as follows;

Overall studying in the UK will provide an opportunity to build collaborations to achieve Kenyan Vision 2030 which aims to industrialize and transform the country into middle-income status while ensuring high-quality life for her citizens.

Kindly note the reasons for studying in the UK are covered in the paragraphs explaining the course choices.

PS: As I explained in the leadership essay, I will be pursuing MSc. Agriculture and Development at the University of Reading as between submitting my essays and the interview date, I had decided to change my choices and obtained the necessary offers. Kindly note you will only be allowed to change your choices once and that is during your interview. My shift was easy because my career plan was in agriculture and therefore it was easy to convince the panel. If you decide to change your courses at the interview stage, make sure the changes are in line with your career plan as this cannot be changed afterward. My final list of choices was as follows;

1) MSc Agriculture and Development- University of Reading.

2) MSc Applied International Development- University of Reading.

3) MSc International Development: Poverty, Inequality, and Development- University of Manchester.

When selecting your universities, you could start by searching UK universities offering your preferred course. You could narrow down by checking whether you meet admission requirements. Then check modules to see whether they align with your career plan and finally location. In my case, I searched universities offering MSc International Development, since I met requirements for all, I eliminated universities in London since accommodation is expensive despite a higher Chevening stipend compared to other cities. I also wanted to be close to London so Reading became a big candidate (Reading is 25 minutes from London by train). Finally MSc. international development at the University of Reading offered electives in agriculture which was in line with my career. That’s how MSc. Applied International Development ended up being my first choice. However, during my interview I changed my courses and introduced MSc. Agriculture and Development at the University of Reading as my first choice.

Finally, be authentic, give your story, and do not copy essays of previously selected scholars. The readers can detect plagiarism (an academic offense) and it makes your interviews in later stages easier when you own your story. In addition, use simple grammatically correct English sentences. Your essays are the opportune moment to create a first impression and writing skills are paramount in this. Have people proofread your essays for guidance and where you use abbreviations, make sure you give their meaning initially.

Thank you so much Sir for this essay. It has really helped me in constructing mine. God bless you richly. And I pray for a successful application

Please I need a helping hand to complete my application. it’s the referencing, and also when to upload transcript. Is it after submitting the application that I will later upload them? Thanks

Chinaza Arinzechukwu avatar

Mohamed, I don’t think you can use an admission obtained two years ago, some schools state that ones an offer is more than one year and has been deferred once can not be used again. So just enquire from the intended university and go by their response. However, to be on the safe side, reapply. You don’t need to rush obtaining an offer. But you should plan to get in before June 2020.

Your contribution has been highly valuable to me. I have been analysing my texts and I decided to evaluate every single word to make them read-count as necessary to coexist in my whole application. Something I notice is the relevancy of chosen professions. Yours, for example, is beautifully necessary for most developing countries. In my case, I must work a bit harder to demonstrate why I and my country need my chosen course.

Wow! I came across the advert on Chevening scholarship randomly from my scholarships subscription page and decided for warm-ups for better preparations on the application process. And aaaw! Four Essay Topics

chevening essay on studying in the uk

Leadership and Influence

Chevening is looking for individuals who will be future leaders or influencers in their home countries. Explain how you meet this requirement, using clear examples of your own leadership and influencing skills to support your answer. - Question as per the Chevening Website

Using the methods explained above (STAR AND SMART Approach), ensure that you speak on the times you have depicted leadership traits, the leadership positions you have occupied and the times you have displayed a position of influence. These can range from managerial positions, leadership in organizations (NGO's included), or in your day-to-day life. In addition, you can touch on what leadership ambitions you have and how this ties back to your community.

It is important to ensure that the examples are impact-driven and not only for self-gain.

Chevening is looking for individuals with strong professional relationship-building skills, who will engage with the Chevening community and influence and lead others in their chosen profession. Please explain how you build and maintain relationships in a professional capacity, using clear examples of how you currently do this, and outline how you hope to use these skills in the future. - Question as per the Chevening Website

Writing your networking essay is primarily about showing clear examples of the relationships you have built, how they were established, and how you have managed to maintain them. In addition, highlight how these said relationships have been instrumental in your personal development and the work that you do. Ensure that you are able to glean from every example the skill acquired and how these skills will be useful to you in the future as a possible Chevening scholar. This essay, in essence, is to show that you have the ability to use the opportunities given to you in a tangible and impactful manner.

Career Plan

Chevening is looking for individuals who have a clear post-study career plan. Please outline your immediate plans upon returning home and your longer-term career goals. You may wish to consider how these relate to what the UK government is doing in your country. - Question as per Chevening Website

This essay provides an opportunity for you to layout an immediate 2-year plan, and a 5 to 10-year plan. Your plans need to be attainable and should speak to your ambitions as laid out in your career plan. The most important tip for when writing out your career plan, is to ensure that when you touch on your professional experience, it not be written as though it is a Curriculum Vitae but rather speaking on impact, journey, and career trajectory. You too are welcome to link your journey thus far, to how this informs your next career move, namely pursuing a masters degree. You should depict an understanding of what you want to do in the future, how this is tangibly attainable, and what your ambitions are long term.

The Chevening ASEAN Scholarship Programme will enable more scholars from South East Asia (including Malaysia) to study in the UK. It also augurs well with Malaysia’s chairmanship of ASEAN in 2025.

The Chevening award is the UK Government’s global scholarship programme that is funded and administered by the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO). This is complemented by generous sponsorships from Malaysian corporate partners namely CIMB Foundation, Yayasan Khazanah, PETRONAS and the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation. British universities also provide additional funding in support of the Chevening programme.

Chevening partners in Malaysia

Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Dr Jeffrey Cheah AO, Founder and Chairman of the Sunway Group said:

It has been a pleasure and privilege for the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation to have been the sponsor of a Chevening Scholarship since 2018. Each year I am thrilled by the quality of the applicants, and especially that of the candidates for our Scholarship; and we are delighted to be able to provide the opportunity over the years to well-deserving Malaysians to enhance their professional and leadership skills at a UK university and partake of the many interesting activities that are provided by the Chevening Secretariat in London.

Ahmad Shahriman Mohd Shariff, Chief Executive Officer of CIMB Foundation said:

CIMB Foundation is pleased to continue our collaboration with the UK for the Chevening Scholarship programme, a platform which provides life-changing opportunities for exceptional individuals to transform their lives through the power of education and networking. Aligned with our core impact area of Education, we firmly believe that the Chevening Scholarship plays an instrumental role in shaping the next generation of Malaysian leaders. The scholarship provides the recipients an edge through wide exposure and knowledge transfer, enhancing their value to the nation in returning to create positive and lasting change in their respective areas of specialisation.

Intan Zalila, Chief Programme Officer of Yayasan Khazanah said:

Our partnership with Chevening allows us to connect with a diverse pool of talented individuals who are poised to make significant contributions to society. We look forward to the continued success of our partnership with Chevening, as we work together to empower future leaders and make a lasting impact!

Ruslan Islahudin, Vice President & Group Chief Human Resource Officer of PETRONAS said:

Our alliance with the Chevening Scholarship reflects our commitment to empowering future leaders who are not only equipped with a world-class education but are also dedicated to driving sustainable solutions to global challenges in navigating a just energy transition. We are optimistic that these scholars will significantly contribute to the aspiration of shaping a more sustainable future by bringing innovative ideas and responsible business practices to the forefront here in Malaysia.

The Malaysian scholars

The current batch of scholars will be heading to the UK as early as September this year to pursue a wide range of postgraduate programmes at top UK universities, including subjects such as Early Years Education, Creative Writing Poetry, Global Health Policy, Cyber Defence and Information Assurance as well as Competition Law.

Scholar Muhammad Farhan Shahmi bin Abdullah who will be attending University of Cambridge to study Sociology (The Sociology of Media and Culture) said:

Misinformation and hate speech are ever-evolving threats in Malaysia, and preparing our youth to tackle them is crucial. I am driven to study Sociology at Cambridge to enrich myself with knowledge and skills in building effective, yet inclusive solutions to this conundrum. Certainly, interventions in sociology consider broader factors like culture and social dynamics, thus viewing social issues like misinformation and hate speech through a holistic lens. With the knowledge gained and network fostered from the Chevening experience, I aim to ultimately advocate for media literacy’s inclusion in the national school curriculum, making it a fundamental skill for all Malaysians.

Lydia Hong Wen Xin who will be attending Imperial College London to study Climate Change, Management and Finance said:

The field of climate change and finance is rapidly evolving, driven by urgent global demands to address climate risks and transition to sustainable energy systems. In Malaysia, recent initiatives like the target to achieve a 70% renewable energy mix by 2050 exemplify this momentum. Studying in the UK, with its environmental stewardship and cutting-edge research, offers an ideal platform to gain the expertise needed to contribute effectively to this global challenge. The holistic approach provided by my program enables me to communicate effectively across both business and scientific contexts.

Rajwin Kanagarajah who will be attending the University of Cambridge to study Population Health Sciences said:

One of the most pressing challenges in population health in Malaysia today is the growing burden of non-communicable diseases such as diabetes, hypertension and heart disease driven by lifestyle changes and an ageing population. This not only strains healthcare resources but also widens health disparities. Through this Chevening scholarship, I aim to gain expertise in public health policy, health economics and digital health solutions. Upon my return, I hope to contribute to Malaysia’s healthcare transformation by driving innovative, data-driven approaches in reducing disease burden, improving access to care and closing healthcare gaps on a national scale.

Syamim S. who will be attending the University of Kent to study Autism Studies said:

As an autistic person, equal opportunities are core to my Chevening journey. They allow persons with disabilities like myself equitable access to education. Personally, experiencing how such legislations may protect disabled persons is its own learning curve—one that I look forward to exploring further in the UK and adapting back home. I hope to build capacity within myself and my community through this academic and existential journey, moving Malaysia towards a better state of autistic and disability rights, benefiting everyone.

Malaysia is the second largest recipient of Chevening awards in ASEAN and there are already over 2,000 members of the Chevening alumni in Malaysia.

The UK government has recently reiterated that the UK welcomes international students. Malaysians who wish to get a scholarship to pursue a post-graduate degree in the UK can apply now until applications close on 5 November 2024. More information is available on www.chevening.org/malaysia .

How can one bag UK's Chevening Award? Public policy expert at NITI Aayog tells us in great details

Meet the scholars

Aspiring to study in the United Kingdom (UK), one of the world's premier education hubs, can  be a transformative experience. Whether you're a student, a working professional, or someone with a career gap, this world-class education will immerse you in a year filled with opportunities, connecting you with driven individuals from around the globe who share your ambitions.

It’s not just about gaining knowledge; it’s about accessing opportunities you never knew existed. If you're aiming for a job abroad, this is an excellent starting point.

Even if you return to India, a UK education elevates you above your peers, setting a higher benchmark for your career.

However, the cost of pursuing a master’s degree in the UK is significant. Tuition fees range from £30,000 to £50,000, depending on the university, with some MBA programmes  reaching up to £80,000.

When you factor in living expenses, which are approximately £20,000 annually, the total cost can quickly add up to between ₹50 lakh and ₹1 crore per year. This substantial financial commitment often deters many from following their dreams.

But what if I told you that you could complete your master’s degree for free — no costs for travel, visa applications, living expenses, or daily costs? It may sound too good to be true, but it is entirely possible.

Beyond the financial benefits, you'll join an exclusive cohort of around 1,300 people globally, including 40 exceptionally talented individuals from India. These are top performers in their fields — social workers, entrepreneurs, civil servants — who will become lifelong friends, bonded over shared ideas and a common ambition to excel.

You'll find yourself among your tribe, pushing you to achieve even more. This is what the Chevening Award offers. Pronounced as "cheev-ning," not "shev-ning," it’s a life-changing opportunity which aims to cultivate a network of leaders who are exceptionally skilled at leveraging their connections to drive development in their home countries.

What is the award all about?

The Chevening Award is part of the Chevening Scheme run by the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO), a ministry under the British Government. This prestigious scheme is available only to select countries, excluding the  US, where the equivalent opportunity is the Marshall Scholarship.

Scheme offers two types of awards: the Chevening Scholarship, typically granted to candidates pursuing a full one-year master’s degree in the UK, and the Chevening Fellowship, designed for more experienced professionals and lasting eight to 12 weeks. Each award has its own set of eligibility criteria and application processes.

My experience

As an engineer turned entrepreneur and public policy expert at NITI Aayog, I am set to pursue a Master’s in Entrepreneurship at UCL with a Chevening Scholarship. I qualified for the 2024-25 Chevening award on my second attempt.

In this column, I’ll discuss my journey, offering two perspectives: the lessons from my first, unsuccessful attempt, and the changes I made in my second application that led to  success.

In my experience, there’s often more to learn from failure than success, and I hope to share insights that may be valuable to future applicants.

The entire Chevening application process is conducted online through a portal accessible via chevening.org .

Let's take a look at the process

Initially, the form includes 12 eligibility questions to screen  your application. Key requirements include being a citizen of a Chevening-eligible country, having completed an undergraduate degree that qualifies you for a postgraduate programme at a UK university, and possessing at least two years (2,800 hours) of work experience.

Once you pass the eligibility check, you’ll proceed to fill out the application, which is divided into nine sections. A few sections require basic details like personal information, education, and travel history. Others, such as the Programme of Study, Referees, and Supporting Statements, demand more thoughtful input.

A critical step is choosing three courses at three different or the same universities, which you must list in your Chevening application.

Note that applying to universities is different from the Chevening application, and each course may have specific requirements. Chevening typically allows you until July 13th of the following year to upload an unconditional offer if you are selected.

In my first attempt, I only started applying to universities after being shortlisted for the Chevening interview. While I secured admission to two universities, I faced challenges later, as I was not eligible for university-specific scholarships.

When I didn't make the final cut for Chevening that year, I had to defer my offers, lacking financial support. I recommend applying early to universities; many offer application fee waivers and internal scholarships, which serve as valuable backups if you plan to study in the UK that academic year.

Here we go...

When applying for the Chevening Scholarship, you’ll need to provide two referees who know you in a professional capacity. Since the UK Master's is an intensive one-year course, it demands academic rigour. Therefore, having one academic referee and one work referee can offer a balanced perspective on your qualifications.

While this isn't a strict rule, it’s important to note that since the scholarship requires a minimum level of work experience, demonstrating professional competence is crucial. In my first attempt, as an entrepreneur without a direct work supervisor, I could only provide academic referees. However, in my second attempt, working at NITI Aayog allowed me to include a reference from our organisational head, alongside an academic referee.

In addition to references, you'll need to answer four key questions in 100-500 words each, focused on Leadership and Influence, Relationship Building and Shared Learning,  Studying in the UK, and Career Plan.

Chevening seeks individuals poised to become future leaders or influencers in their home countries. You’ll be expected to share specific examples of your leadership and influencing skills, demonstrating how you've built and maintained professional relationships, and how you plan to use these skills in the future.

You must also justify your choice of three university courses, linking them to your previous academic or professional experience and future career plans. Thorough research into your chosen courses is crucial for this section.

Chevening looks for candidates with a clear post-study career plan, outlining both immediate goals upon returning home and longer-term aspirations. You might also consider how your goals align with what the UK government is doing in your country.

Your application should tell a coherent, connected story. Avoid disjointed or disconnected answers. You can use the same experience to showcase different qualities, such as leadership and networking ability, by highlighting different aspects or using entirely different examples. Structure your answers using the STAR approach: Situation, Task, Action, Result.

Interview tips

If you’re invited for an interview, typically around February, congratulations — you’re one step closer to studying in the UK. The interview panel usually includes representatives from the British High Commission, Chevening alumni, and the Chevening Country Team.

My interview experience improved significantly between my first and second attempts, thanks to advice from past Chevening alumni who helped me highlight the most compelling aspects of my story.

During the interview, questions will largely revolve around the four essay questions, but you have the opportunity to add layers of detail, making your story even more memorable. Your answers should form a connected narrative. Instead of plainly introducing yourself, weave a story.

For example, if you're a girl from a rural part of Uttar Pradesh who went on to study economics at Delhi University (DU), you might start by saying, “Born in a rural Indian household, living closely with my community, my passion for social development led me to study economics at DU, with a strong focus on enabling social inclusion for the marginalised…”

Each event in your life has a storyline — bring it out instead of merely stating the facts. Remember, you’re competing against 60,000 candidates. Your story should captivate  the interviewers and make you unforgettable.

If you're not selected after the interview, don’t be discouraged. Seek feedback from Chevening alumni, identify areas for improvement, and try again. Also, don’t forget to defer your university offer if possible — it can save you a lot of trouble the following year.

We asked current Scholars what they didn’t expect to see when they arrived in the UK.

Studying abroad can come with some culture shocks, and this is as true of the UK as elsewhere in the world.

We asked our current Chevening Scholars to tell us what they found the most surprising about coming here to study. From the academic culture to the infamous British weather, here’s what they said.

The most surprising things about UK universities

The different style of teaching

From calling professors by their first names to receiving personalised feedback on their work, many Scholars’ comments reflected the open communication between professors and students in the UK.

Scholars mentioned the fact that their tutors frequently wanted to hear their opinions on what they were learning and that they were taught to think critically about the information they were presented with – even if that meant questioning their lecturers.

“My words can be heard in this educational system,” said one Scholar. “I am not just a listener.”

The challenging course load

Many of our Scholars mentioned the high level of academic writing required from students at UK universities, and the number of readings required for each class.

“The MSc degree is way more challenging than I thought,” said one.

Academic study in the UK is also highly self-motivated. One Scholar had this to say: “The amount of freedom and personal responsibility in the UK system is challenging for neurodivergent people, but if they succeed, it’s a whole new set of skills and a level up.”

Different modes of assessment

Naturally, some of the unexpected moments that students encountered during their degrees were when it came to handing in essays or completing exams.

One Scholar mentioned TurnItIn software, which is a plagiarism prevention software you may encounter when turning in essays online. It compares your work to its database in order to flag to the university if your work is not your own.

Scholars also spoke about the UK university grading system, in which students almost never receive 100%. You might think you’ve failed if you get a mark of 70, but actually, that’s a top grade! We’ve written a handy guide to explain UK grading.

The student culture

Scholars also mentioned the high number of international students on campus and the support Chevening Scholars receive from their universities.

They also expressed surprise at the age and experience gap that there can be between Chevening Scholars and local students.

In the UK, it’s common for students to complete a Master’s directly after finishing their undergraduate degree, so it’s likely that many of your coursemates will be younger than you, and have less experience in the world of work.

Surprising things about life in the UK

The great deals for students

Multiple Scholars highlighted the discounts that are available for students in the UK, whether that’s discounted entry to museums, money off in high street shops, or free tickets to the cinema.

To find out more, read our list of life hacks for studying in the UK here .

Practical matters

The UK is one of only 76 countries that drive on the left-hand side of the road (compared to 163 that drive on the right!) and this can be disorientating when you first arrive.

Other culture shocks included the appliances that are more common in UK households than elsewhere in the world. One example is a boiler, which most UK houses will have to take care of heating and hot water. It’s also worth noting that most UK houses don’t have air conditioning units!

Friendly people

“The people are absolutely the kindest and extremely helpful,” said one Scholar, while another highlighted the open networking culture in the UK.

This is especially true for Chevening Scholars, as you’re arriving into a built-in community of like-minded leaders.

One Scholar also mentioned the opportunities to get involved in exercise groups.

“The amount of races that are offered every week and the strong running community [surprised me],” they said.

It’s true – initiatives like ParkRun offer free, weekly community events where everyone can get together to run around the local park, and they’re common across the country!

Finally, the British weather

You knew this one was coming!

The UK is famous for its rain, so much so that we wrote a blog about what to do in the UK on days where the heavens open.

One Scholar said that the weather in their experience was mostly nice and sunny, while others said that it’s not uncommon to witness several seasons in one day.

“I remember a day that snowed, rained, and then the sun showed up, all in a loop throughout!” said one Scholar.

It’s not just the weather itself that surprised our Scholars, but the way people in the UK reacted to it.

“Everyone wears shorts even in the middle of winter here!” was another response we received.

While no study abroad experience will be without its surprises, this should hopefully give you an idea of what to expect when you study abroad with a Chevening Scholarship!
