How can I leave feedback or make comments on my students' annotations?

Teachers can leave feedback on students' annotations on any assignment: a Library Lesson, a 360 Lesson, or a Target Lesson. To access students' annotations, go to the Assignments page for the class and click Dashboard for the assignment.

From the Dashboard page, click Student Annotations in the menu over on the left. You can switch between students using the drop-down towards the top of the Student Annotations page, and click the See Latest Annotations button to view any new annotations added by that student since the last page load.

After choosing a student's name from the drop-down, click on an annotation to provide feedback. This will reveal the exact segment the student annotated underlined in green, as well as a "Reply..." box. Add your comment in the box and then click the "Reply" button to publish it. As soon as you add your comment, the student will see it on their assignment if they refresh the page.

To edit or delete your comment, click the three stacked dots in the upper right-hand corner of the comment box and then select "Edit Reply" or "Delete Reply."

Teachers can comment on a student's annotations at any point, including before or after they have submitted the assignment. However, please note that students can only annotate an assignment before they have submitted it.

Why can't I delete an assignment?

Only primary teachers (class owners) can delete a class assignment. If you are a secondary teacher in a class, you will not be able to delete class assignments. This is to ensure student data is not accidentally deleted. Please reach out to the primary teacher of the class to delete an assignment.

Secondary teachers also cannot archive classes, delete classes, or remove a student from a class.

Looking to set up your classes and students on CommonLit but aren’t sure how? Fortunately, we’ve made it easy and straightforward to do so.

If you haven’t created your CommonLit account yet, go here to create your account. If your district has set up CommonLit on Clever, you can also click on the CommonLit logo on your Clever dashboard to set up your account.

Once you’ve created your CommonLit account, there are three easy ways to set up your CommonLit classes: Google Classroom , Clever , or CommonLit class code .

Google Classroom

If you use Google Classroom, go to your Manage Classes page and click the button Import classes and students with Google Classroom to automatically roster your students. Not only will this create your classes and students’ accounts for you, but you will be able to post CommonLit assignments and scores to your Google Classroom stream. Students will also be set up to log into CommonLit using Google’s single sign on.

Manage Classes tab on CommonLit.

If your district is syncing with CommonLit through Clever, you can connect your CommonLit account to Clever and import your sections and students by simply logging into CommonLit from Clever. Log into Clever and click on the CommonLit logo to get started. Clever will automatically roster your classes to CommonLit for you, and your students will be able to login to CommonLit using Clever SSO.

You can also roster your classes to CommonLit by clicking Log in with Clever on the CommonLit login page .

CommonLit login page.

If your district uses Clever but is not yet syncing with CommonLit, email [email protected] and let us know who we should contact to get your school or district set up.

If you don’t use Google Classroom or Clever, you can manually create a class by going to your Manage Classes page and clicking “Create a New Class.” Once you’ve created a class, share the unique class code with your students. They can use it to sign up on the CommonLit homepage .
